Rebuilding an Army Veteran's van. No longer homeless!

today's the day nate we are finally getting john's van into the shop and you get started on it no go if the mechanics can figure out how to open a hood hey it's like 20 degrees and snowy i'm fat is that the secret is that like me and jordan are wearing sweaters yeah yeah yeah oh 200 pounds those are rookie numbers [Music] remember when i was in eighth grade you're also four feet tall 180 at a on a friday night after 20 beers hey i'm 20 pounds down i'm proud of you nate so it doesn't have a belt the power steering is non-existent we know all about power steering not working we're going to work on that little issue today too the chrysler product uh i think all three of your rigs here this one doesn't have power steering he's got no belt the jeep needs a pump because you're running out of fluid and your dodge has hydro boost issues yes power steering fluid yeah so so all three of the vehicles i brought you have steering issues yeah and they're all chryslers man we fired this thing up yesterday the uh it filled the shop with smoke well you can see yeah how many miles are those things like 355 that it's it's it's up there wow yeah it just started really smoking you need a man to get in there and steer this thing okay i don't think that's steam i think that's smoke it smells of oil well the good news is we don't have to worry about mosquitoes in your shop or if they make a candle that smells like that you you would have that that's it dude you have to uh the ignition's out so the steering wheel you turn it and it locks oh so you have to push the button and then turn the wheel and then oh yeah he warned me about that when you're driving it the steering will just automatically lock sometimes so you have to stick your finger in there and hold the lock the steering walk release so we should uh probably add that we're gonna have that to the list yeah so fun fact uh they actually ran the venom around this fan and it's been here before uh what did what did you guys do to it we put a battery in it that is dead dead we put a fuel pump in it uh and it had a u-joint that was about ready to come apart so we put a u-joint in it how long ago was that let's scratch the paint what's going on here the phone has it this is the part where i pretend like i'm helping but i really just watched them do so we it we tried to find a uh a new long block um and they're not available the uh yeah it's a 360. the ones that are available i don't trust working we've got a couple other uh couple other engine jobs that we've done from either svga or atk and those motors had to come back out if you want to pay those repair bills s j i'll happily delete that part of the video [Laughter] what's that say it says home with a p so hope hope hope that's hope that this thing's going to run again yeah don't worry about that okay oh man i was hoping they actually have one of the mechanics work on it are you really we just had this conversation where were you remember that cherokee locked up transmission we drug in here gavin's already got the transmission changed is it going to work hopefully well it's changed that doesn't mean it's going to go anywhere this way it has neutral before it was locked up so that's where one there's progress yeah we're going to move now with the drive shafts installed okay i don't know if it'll move under some power we'll find out here when i'm waiting right now don't scratch that bumper yeah hey maggie hi hi what's that what's that we'll just weld it back on hey look at this somebody drop that here's the oil cap if somebody dropped that and it made that like that plinko noise from the prices right and it didn't hit the ground i wonder how long it's been riding around down there yeah dude it is a dodge wait wait that the headlight pockets are velcroed on yeah mopar or no car hey nate what kind of car should i buy well i don't know dodge jeep dodge actually this one did go how many miles racing 350 something 350. dude that radiator that's like that belongs in a museum and i've got a chrysler product out there that needs to come in the shop pulling a trailer with a chrysler product on it that needs to come in the shop and at home i have another and at home i have another chrysler product that needs to come to the shop my silver dodge oh the silver one yeah you're never going to believe this but but my other dodge pickup the front end's got a lot of play in it oh weird i i know i know you wouldn't expect that from a dodge yeah the front of you build every oil change pretty much so we got some exhaust leak we need some rear brakes lots of tires uh we come out with spots for aluminum wheels for them that'd be cool that's a couple i need uh some suspension bushings a wheel bearing yeah this wheel bearing is pretty nasty yeah no i need to replace that if it's making noise it's working that's why gavin's transmission is not making any noise over there yeah is that why it's is that why it's so quiet over in that bag there's a happy medium between like too much noise and not enough noise that medium is somewhere between these two bays right now so the fun things you find when you take stuff apart is stuff like this where someone put the brake pad in wrong and it's just rubbing it through the it's just a wrong brake pad in general a wrong brake pad but the good news is it rubbed down enough that it's not rubbing anymore how do you drive that that far come on he's got a kick ass sturdy on this thing dude i've been a long time since i've worked on one of these yeah this is more of a thing that usually mechanics work on good thing i'm a technician how's it going in the shop technician mechanic oil change guy i think so no me and gabriel attacks i gotta pull some mechanics stuff sometimes makes just the oil change guys we all have our moments okay casey like like when i put two oil filter gaskets all together started up a vehicle on brand new pavement and dumped all the oil all over yeah see that's a mechanic move [Laughter] nice the jewelries of working on snow covered vehicles in the winter time it's really fun it's hard to tell if you're already sweating or if it's just the water dripping on your head actually i am a really good sweater just running off of this thing dude nate's thinking about work [Laughter] do you know what's stopping this cotter pin from coming out about to do i was getting ready to cut it to where i could get the socket on there and just blast it if you're watching this and you don't think your mechanic talks to your car like this you are wrong this is ridiculous come on yeah if someone came into this shop and tried to do one of those hidden camera things to catch the scammers all they're gonna get is like this is the weirdest person i've ever seen in my life yeah they didn't they didn't scam me but they're super weird that guy needs a therapist [Laughter] that's why these coil springs gonna go we'll have to we'll have to let it down on the ground and like put weight on them because yes we could we could bring uh bring your your dad's saw horses in the steel saw horses and like set it on the saw horses and then pull the shocks out because i got my upper ball joint loose so your so your shock is holding air now no i mean the other ball joint the nuts don't want it oh i know how the taper is separated i've got this really cool four cent piece of cotter holding this so so you're so you're all ready to go over here ah kind of and you're just waiting on what's happening over here i mean not necessarily this whole entire drawer worth about zero dollars that one's that one's for looks needs to happen over there nate to get that loose can you see anything so we're draining the oil and the oil is piling up as it drains in here it's like pancake batter it's just a little thick yeah not much compression here rolls right over a little bit a little bit a little bit okay what are you doing over here putting fluid in this thing you got all the cool tools this isn't even mine this is nate i broke mine so i got his break his hey don't don't pinch your fingers in the hotel yeah yeah my finger right there says that's a bad idea do you still have a booboo from that yeah look at it yeah your fault okay you did that to yourself i'm not arguing that i was just uh you know did you see the uh i already oh yeah that's a good one uh i landed on that corner yeah i know i sacrificed my finger to mount those shocks and the first thing you do is roll it and break them it held did a good job race break fix repeat right now we're at step three how you mount things well i think it worked out pretty good it's getting a windshield anyway that's what i said and wipers exactly i like how they wrote up on the inspection report that the wipers streak and it's like well with the shattered window that's popping out like okay we'll put new wipers on it no no no that draws the line you're not wrong the wipers moment of truth it's got to use he came about that close to your toolbox yes hey look there's an engine he's really good at breaking [Applause] and you're known for finesse i am actually you see that wow uh is this the vacuum line for the hvac yep it's good thing casey's videoing this probably have to watch it so we know how to put it back together it looks like we could just leave that uh the dipstick on there yep feel clear okay yeah you got ready to take the sucker up cool let's do it [Applause] we're racing feels like a 9 16 so jordan's mopping up all the water on the floor nate brings in more stuff with snow on it yeah that's how it works but it works all right well this one's ready to go uh broke down while they're out camping got dropped off here the tow truck i shoved it in you haven't changed the transmission in like 20 minutes and out the door goes oh 15. sorry now they can get back to camping you know why they call it a grand cherokee because when you get the bill it's gonna be at least a grand or three that was the worst joke ever dude i came all the way i came all the way over here at the camera it's gonna be a good one i brought the camera all the way over to catch that joke and it was just like a it smelled like it was gonna be a good one i think it needs to be worded better it smells like it so explain what we're doing now we're raising the floor higher so the uh easy come on down more yeah a little more okay good um so the coil spring is under tension right now so there's one up here that basically keeps when you lift it up it keeps the spring transfer in half so you need to disappear from the station across your house so we'll do that by putting the performance on frame and taking the arms and the knuckles so that was a great explanation and all but all i got out of all of that is that a bunch of people in the comments are going to tell you that the springs are under compression not tension same difference compression compressions in the motor stupid not in this motor [Music] hold on dang it did you look at that [Music] easy i got some wiring attached to the body up here above the [Applause] looks like you need a cat's paw cyber everyone wants to know how your jeep's doing uh well we pulled the vlog over this week i guess that's how it's doing engine's a little full of water it's not good let's focus we don't do that around here jordan got one more wiring harness built under around this cable oh got it that that that throttle valve cable is still hooked up on both ends what do you think how's it going we gonna get it i think we're gonna get it all right okay i think so easy easy what's this what you got that hose right there it's not touching uh both those holes are disconnected right here actually don't hook anything i'm trying to hook this there we go oh there we go okay uh that was me all right watch your ignition wires jordan i'm going to travel on uh you do the button jordan oh yeah okay george got it there's one wiring harness up above yeah i see that what does it go to on top of the motor we have plenty of slack so let's go [Music] all disconnected up front what's the linkage there is that undone oh these are vacuum points this is how you do valve cover gaskets okay no on this you just sit in the driver's seat and do it shamwow jordan you did good work okay we're coming up freaking saying pal it is separated all right well motor is out so gavin's got the track jeep pulled in he's gonna change the power steering pump on that when that hydraulic line came loose and it ran the pump dry it cooked the power steering pump well it works just only at like super high rpm so i'm gonna put another another new one in it and see how it that does and nate is taking stuff apart yeah now the hard part gonna actually fix it the bad part is once you get the motor unbolted from the suspension we've got to bolt all the suspension back in the van so we can roll it back outside until the motor's rebuilt i'll go back i will totally say i tried to order a new motor this thing and obviously you can see what it takes to get these motors out so putting a good motor in it the first time is usually ideal [Music] um aer i think it's american engine remanufacturers i think anytime you call ford chevy chrysler jeep dodge and ask them for a motor it comes from aer and i think gavin has installed probably five or six six four power strokes we've done two or three five four tritons uh do a lot of motors around here never had a problem with any er product the very very first atk motor that i did is out there in the parking lot with a bad crankshaft gavin how many atk motors you've done that were messed up huh how many atk motors have you done ever messed up [Music] yes all of them so we don't use that brand there's usually always something wrong with them i have one and ran for 10 minutes and lifters will crap start knocking making noise oh nelly that actually doesn't look very bad at all it's nowhere near as fast as i expected it is a clean no but it's got 350 000 miles well you've tried to take care of it he put a new transmission in it he had you guys do a u-joint and fuel pump and something else yeah so he made an effort with this thing i saw a uh are real on actually i think you said it to me it was like an apprentice takes each piece off one by one lays it out all super organized has all the bolts in a bucket a master technician takes things off and throws them in a pile and guess what the outcome is still the same so so so what's the master technician do let me show you yeah we're looking at it it's that old school they're heavy too they're called a magnum for a reason [Laughter] got it wow that is really heavy push rods get new push rods because these ones feel like glow sticks [Laughter] you reversed it oh my gosh look at that one dude they're gnarly yeah you can't probably can't see it the camera but it is it's not round it is not the shape of a circle huh i missed some sand you finding more sand from my dune trip yeah oh yeah so this the new little is going in there look how tiny that little pump is crazy yeah no wonder i keep burning them up trying to this this little pump is trying to turn those it's like hell yeah that's just screaming it probably still gets hot even with a cooler on it i would bet so it hasn't got hot to the point of dying but i'd imagine it still gets hot i wonder if we put like a fan on your cooler like i can't even put the grill back in this thing because i've got so many coolers bolted on that front here what is going on over there try hard noises okay tell the people what this machine is this is a very expensive dishwasher [Music] hey finally not a chrysler in the shop that's another one of my poor life decisions oh yeah you bought this off a marketplace huh why why if i had the answer to that so nate's on facebook marketplace and sees an escalade what with lots of problems is why it was on marketplace and he's like sure now he's got to escalate so inside of here was like full of sediment and this of course i threw it down there on the floor you can see right here yeah that's just like uh just like that last one i did the this is the the low point of the block like there's actually a cooling system drain right here um but just you know sediment from the the steel block rusting you know just settles down in here um and it rusts rust out these freeze plugs that one's pretty naughty oh yeah yeah yeah sorry kovo your donation is getting smaller and smaller so back to nate's poor life decisions how you need ball joints yeah did you see the the clip well nate hates cotter pin so he'll love that wire bailing wire twisted through the ball joint why is my pressure line leaking there's no o-ring on it how is there no o-ring on it ah there's no ring on it who changed the last pump you did i did you did oh i did never mind never mind never mind just put a new one on there i was about to really give someone some crap like there should be an o-ring right there yeah i forgot that uh last time we changed the power steering pump it was done here in this shop but i i'm the one who did it so not them [Laughter] i know i didn't do it yeah i'm like which one of you did this it was this shop that did it hey which one do you thought is a good idea to hand me tools hey i never said i was good at this but no that's my new line i never said i was good at this t-shirt's coming soon well now i'm impressed with how little it was leaking for not having a o-ring on it it's funny well i when i first started looking i was like that looks like that's leaking then i went to change the o-ring i'm like that might be why it's leaking there's no o-ring on there this is why i just let you guys work on my stuff food in this thing not changed already oh yeah it's been like 10 minutes i know again that's why i let you guys that'll be 400 [Laughter] are you using cylinders as a tool tray oh they're getting bored like what are we going to bore this thing out to you how big can this block go 408 four you knew that way too quick hey trick just use some brake clean spray brake clean move back and forth that'll break the carpet off slide right out see i told you okay wait she comes over here we got one more to go i told you technician mechanic oil change guy come on man hey thank you for getting one thing in there owner we'll forget the owner part of all this it was good at this i'm not left-handed at all either that was a great trick gavin that would that work phenomenal if you ever have any of them stick you spray that just go back and forth it'll still slide right out the brake clean works good all the engine builders are going to watch this ouch don't worry don't worry about that this thing really wasn't even that loud it's pretty dirty looking boomstick see any more footage shoot now between the between the fluid shield now the sand blowing in your face every time you start it it's like sandblasting tracks in the dunes are super fun but they make a mess looks good so of course we have to test drive it perfect [Laughter] oh the looks are good look at everybody's pointing look at that it's snowing can't you see yeah look at the little little snow flurries coming down it's totally legit look at everybody like takes everything it has you're going huh yeah we're doing like 30 right now so we're getting along we'll stop at the gas station do whatever you want well how do you test the steering without going around a roundabout yeah i'm hungry we don't have any sway bars definitely makes people turn their heads and don't worry officer it's d.o.t approved look at everyone trying to grab their phone right that's awesome technically this is legal there are rules that say you can only have so much of your tire sticking out before you need mud flaps but it says tire have you ever seen a lawn that says you actually have to have tires no me neither so technically the tire law doesn't apply when you don't have tires i i don't know how well that'll you know hold up for you but in those dry bars sounds good oh good stuff we made it test run successful thing is definitely uh vibrating yes it vibrates a lot one more back there yeah oh i feel like i have oil on my neck is there oil on my neck a little bit a little bit yeah ooh oh yeah hi mr casey how's the ball joint project going going good oh all new control arms the ball joints already installed yeah oh that's cheating yeah your point um no that nate wanted to do it because he was worried about these being worn out yeah it really sucked to change all this and then those bushings are so worth it you can't align it anyway so so just do it all at once we're right here yep tie rod ends and everything too yeah all at once not like it's not bad terrible fast i mean yeah it's one i i i wouldn't think that was 350 000 miles worn no that's pretty incredible and you guys thought crap about my chrysler products all day this is when chrysler was good okay my track jeep is a year older than this oh save that one what what's going on there jordan drop the bolt and a little pan twice twice not once all right we have a bear block yeah we got our pants off that's for sure huh yeah for no reason are you gonna back it in or nose it in kind of wait for that yeah you can make that turn that all right you leave that black dodge alone [Music] all right it turns like a hell yeah it's like a like a glove very sharp turning vehicle [Music] all right the one thing we forgot that jordan remind us of is to roll the window back up and hook power back up [Applause] hot we've done this before where there's like not enough ground wires hooked up to where that doesn't happen so what's up next well now we need our machinist steve to recover from his hernia surgery so that way we can get that motor to him and basically go all the way through it he'll bore the cylinders probably deck the block surface the heads or re-grind all the valves uh probably replace the cam bearings um obviously turn the crankshaft do a new cam new lifters new pistons i have him size all the rods balance crankshaft and rotating assembly and then i'll have him assemble the bottom end he'll probably bolt the oil pan on it and everything and then i'll put the head gaskets on and put the heads on torque the hedge bolts and then put that whole pallet of stuff back on it yeah we have a pile of stuff here so that is it for part one uh when the motor gets back we'll pull that thing back in for part two which is the motor gets back we'll probably get you know probably just build the motor and then when we're ready to put it all together you know we'll bring the van back in pull the front suspension out of it and set the van back on the motor and then we got the wheel bearings and the electrical getting in line with the ignition and all the rest of it yeah i need to order windshield tires or tires and you get a windshield which my glass guy jonathan act passed all the glass you call them and that dude like pulls the windshield out of his closet and does it like an hour so all right so that's it for this one uh yeah part two will be a week a couple weeks probably well hernia surgery so yeah so part two will be uh probably a couple weeks or so ahead it all depends on i'm recovering and uh we will
