Rebuilding a motor on the SIDE of the INTERSTATE (Hot Rod Drag Week: Day 1)

[Music] [Applause] good morning from martin michigan u.s 131 motorsports park it's going to be a beautiful day of drag racing here at drag week 21. if you'll notice there are no trailers behind me and any of them that are must be moved in the next 20 minutes we just finished up the drivers meeting today today is the first competition day of racing if you missed our testing day yesterday make sure to check that out we just posted this morning and it's time to hit the racetrack they just open up the lanes in a few minutes we'll be making the first competition paces of drag week 21. we have 366 racers here today and there's a lot of unique builds we showed you a few of those yesterday we're going to go around the pitch show you a few more and show you some of the highlights from racing today and then we're going to hit the road later in this video so you can see all the struggles it takes to get to the next track it's probably about 250 to 300 miles of driving tonight and we're gonna race white and blue i was in the military and i like pepsi is cool looking you know that that's the longest short of it so you gotta go about nine years ago i come down to this damn parkinson's and i had this the wife's like you better build something that nobody's ever seen and it was just a regular bug my buddy nate's like yeah let's build a castle i've never seen a gas or bug before neither have i are going to get in it looks like all of them made it i think everybody made it in that i'm aware of everybody made it in yes wait so we're we're getting ready i'll probably 10-15 minutes so i'll be able to make first pass nice we're in that 850 class okay so hopefully that hopefully should be competitive um and this car has been a quit as quick as what uh eight one eight oh technically 807. that's flying you gotta be happy with the car then i'm very happy with the car um i've driven it a couple thousand miles you know two from work things like that i've driven it across the state and back and you of course you decided to build one of the cars that has the least amount of storage room i had no idea how bad it was no idea so he's my passenger yeah of course we're like if he's like you know no problem we can do this we'll do this he's like well what about trump's face what do you got for trump's face i see it about that trump spent a few of your friends were messaging us making sure we came and talked to you so shout out to them and i understand this is almost the quickest irs 2 000 out there half of the tenth off from the quickest time right now so no one's running seven with iris he's only seven rs yet um so that is the ultimate hopeful hopeful goal is that maybe at the end of the week if the car's still in great shape um when we've got competition over we might try to go for that hail mary pass try to get that seven seconds that would be that's the ultimate goal well we're just about to run here appreciate it better get in line i'll see you on the track good save the second [ __ ] up yeah we forgot the co2 yeah that saved the car because we didn't take the safety out of the parachute oh yeah nice no way stopping this on full full speed down there before the sand trap yeah it's probably pretty heavy yep it's way too heavy so i understand this car has been in the sixes right it's a rumor it's a rumor okay because we've seen you running in the sevens before on drag week but it's a little quicker than it was last time we saw you yeah last year end of last year we ran a 697 202 god but that was uh that's with the old engine okay so what's the combination here yeah it's the steel water jacket engine like normal dark dark engine it's a 388 with the lots of e85 so it's e85 with the methanol injection okay it is a single turbo yep it's a single turbo how long have you had this combo in the car we only have like in total like 15 passes or something maybe 20. but only eight passes what do you think it'll run yeah we're going to sixes but we'll we'll see how deep we're not going to go that we're not going to do anything for racial power yeah quite conservative maybe friday if we get there so why didn't you choose this car i didn't really you didn't he was sitting in front of me really y'all seen my way i bought it by mistake and it's sitting in the parking lot well thanks for bringing it out here i can't wait to see this thing been slowing down he had to get out of it [Music] but this one's a little different first in and rear-wheel drive yeah it's 91 eagle talon okay it's got a power glide and a chevy rear end so instill the 4g still have the 4g really that's cool with the power glide what have you run with this car i see it's got a caged around some pretty serious numbers yeah it's got a 25-1 chassis we're only running we're only running a 75-millimeter turbo today okay so uh you know normally we can run low weights on this turbo but we're gonna turn it down and try to conserve for the week we got four more tracks to go to so you got to figure out the thousand plus mile drive first yeah which we have this car has 11 street miles since 2004. really we're done last week so wow we're ambitious or dumb or both did you have to go through a lot to prepare it for this week as far as like wanting to be sitting in it for just that many hours um we have not considered driver comfort or passenger comfort really we added the lights that we needed to add signals and stuff like that how much power is making you guys around a thousand yeah give or take very cool it's good to see something different out pass we have seen in that class i think it's the quickest pass of the day it's 7 16 so far no one's running six so that that might be it 716 volvo wagon how about that not what you wanted you're i think you're still the quickest of the day yeah you wanted that six didn't you well you're gonna be way ahead of the class that's for sure it looks so flat out of the hole it's just like a brick i mean it's radial you know oh yeah it's probably easier to go down this track on the radio than on a big snake today because the track is so good this is the home track oh we know oh yeah well we gotta do anything right so it's kind of cheating but yeah it's trick's so good so it's a promo it's not a radio prep but it's a really good pro mod prep so you have your if you have slicks you better throw [Music] [Music] oh yeah there we go at 210.77 miles an hour there you have it the first six second pass of drag week and that was out of an amc javelin another weird car on the trip [Music] there we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 652 might be his new overall record for himself i don't know i think he was in the 660s with his old truck first full pass on that new chassis 652 he's gonna be so excited about that one first full pass 652 holy crap yeah i'm not sure where i lifted but uh somewhere early yeah it was only 202 mile per hour so oh that's why the mile an hour is on okay the other car be like 20 mile per hour quicker at that speed so not a full pass then no you still got a little further to go yep shifted into high gear for the first time which is cool yeah i bet what was the 60 on that one that was another it was a little slower than our first one this morning it was a 101 it seems yes okay but we uh we took a little bit out of it to uh get it down the track on that one so 419 eighth mile yeah almost the other car's best 8th model was the 24. so new bests all around so what was your 60 foot earlier today it was a 9.92 are you serious you're below a second 60 foot first time ever for you oh yeah nice buy like a 10th is that your personal best quarter mile two for your career almost this yeah like i think uh that was a 652 yep you did a 652 in the 66. yeah it was spinning like 217. so nice work [Music] [Music] yeah just ahead of them he did a 52 i think oh good for him nice run thanks very uneasy the whole run because i thought the transmission was broke i thought the gear vendor could have been broke yeah after the rear end yesterday yeah well then the first run like before the in third gear it hit the limiter before the uh eighth mile shouldn't have something was wrong i don't know it shouldn't have been that early something happened weird and it was just like had me all like going through my head and you're going that fast there's not much well that's what rick's like look just hook in the overdrive it doesn't go into thirds i'm like dude it's kind of switch with my reverse no oh god yeah no kidding it's on a little toggle where you'd have to pull down one for over overdrive and two for reverse well and i'd have to pretty much pull my face mask down to see this thing yeah that's not happening i'm glad it worked out yeah you're on track for a very nice average yeah good way to start the week off yeah we detuned it on that run just because we weren't sure of it yeah what's your what's your personal best in the car 668. okay you're not far off it's way off in about an hour we're usually at like 2 20. that's probably usually that's usually it's at 2 15 or not so might have been the gear ratio was a little bit different how much does this car weigh nice ride you could build a lightweight car i guess yeah right wait all right man you on the road [Music] [Music] 971 136. about the exhaust yeah did it lock up the turbo uh it looks like you snapped the shaft do you have a spare got one coming up well hopefully it gets here early soon get some sleep tonight we're gonna have you always had the turbos mounted under there like that yeah okay yeah it's not the ideal location you got filters for the road or no just just let it just send it it's like it's like the garbage is supposed to be a little easier yeah nice try not to put too much food it's nice so what's the new engine you put in the dart it's a 436 inch ritter block w5 head before it was a 340 stock block so now i can like feed it all the boost nice except for now i'm kind of out of injector and you know so it's just one thing after another but having a blast good uh i bent my wheelie bars really badly on that last pass okay that's why it went up higher than i usually see oh yeah i've never i was like you know i'm used to riding the wheelies out i it just went up and up and up and up and it just wouldn't stop and it was so fast i you know my first gut reaction was pedal it you know and uh fortunately i was able to get another little jab of throttle in there and so it came down and didn't hurt anything but it uh it really tweaked the wheelie bar and uh so i don't know i'm kind of chasing my tail so i thought i was going to come out here and just send it and have a great time but we'll keep falling really closely we need to get some sleep tonight and we don't want to get too far behind the cars that are already on the road there's probably already 250 cars on the road to the next track so we're going to get the map find out what the route is and follow the racers and see the struggles it takes to get there along the road so let's go hit the road [Music] what in the hell is going on the drag drag weakers got together and that's pretty amazing yeah i don't even know how to thank everybody for doing that they just asked and a bunch of people chipped in brought some money over i'm blown away by that and here you are yeah and here i am it works just just fine yeah so you have a spare engine on the way yes father-in-law went about two hours a little bit northeast uh found a 3400 with about 60k on it nice low miles more miles yeah well we pulled in here this morning assuming that you'd already left and then i saw your post earlier in the morning oh that you're still i was gonna stick it out and just do the do the run with my father-in-law and just yeah do the trip and meet everybody and you know hang out and have fun but they were like a couple of them just said why don't you tear it apart get a motor fix it put it back together and even if you're just here friday just here friday with the same car that's cool and then i can get it home that's it yeah 840 miles home that's that's the target in all reality so all right we hit the road we've got the route 246.3 miles to summit motorsports park that's the route today we're gonna try and catch up with some of these racers and see what it takes to get there hey you're supposed to make it a little further before you stop a little further everything good yeah i'm good okay that would be brutal making out the gate like literally just outside the game not even past the sign just the game hey the jeepster made it all in a half mile nice nice looking good yeah huh it ain't broken nothing fell off that's good and they got the chevy 2 on the road and yep sure enough let's see oh they just they just bolted the wastegate i don't know they just have a dump out the exhaust that worked out nicely single turbo now now's when the fun begins we're going to be seeing race car i'm sorry street cars littered all across the route now we have like eight of them here at the gas station just outside the track we see the chevy two over here with one missing turbo he's waiting for a replacement but he's gonna limp it down the road with just one turbo on the car bryant goldstone six second javelin the second quickest car overall right now a lot more cars at the gas station here we got a traffic jam of race cars leaving the gas station clark rosenthal ran 760 today and unfortunately made it about 10 miles down the road just saw him up on jack stands so we're gonna go see we're currently backing down the rest we're currently um playing this clip backwards i'm talking backwards [Laughter] nicely done nicely done i know how to back up a trailer uh one of my one of my few traits [Music] no oh geez [Applause] oh jesus yeah that piston does not look happy it turns out it wasn't ready good thing you got steve with you so we got it out on the road and then it was smoking a little bit when we took off and it cleaned up and then it just got worse and worse and worse and then all of a sudden drove a rocker oh so that's why we stopped thank you because it broke the rock yeah all that broke rock around and broke a lifter [Applause] so now we're trying to get that out and then i said well let's just do a compression check on it and see what else is going on it turns out it's got some nip pistons that we didn't know were hurt we're taking them out because they brought hearts down to the block yep down there you go down the block you get to show off your pretty billet block here that's nice yeah yeah good advertisement here for steve morris engines yep always here to help [Laughter] hi clark hey how how's it going this is what you get for turning over the interview to steve earlier [Laughter] i'm sorry to see the troubles no you're not no we need some content for the channel you know it's all good come out of the sun [Applause] hopefully you get a little bit of sleep tonight yeah that's overrated well we won't be seeing clark anywhere on down the road but hopefully we'll be seeing him in the morning tomorrow at summit motorsports park i think that's where we're going norwalk where whatever tracks in here yes summit motorsports park oh yeah the volvo wagon the ride to 13 20 vans i get air conditioning area how's the back of the wagon treat now actually it's pretty comfortable yeah it's a lot better than you know it's a good thing it's not 90 degrees yeah no kidding so the drive's been pretty good i'll do this yeah it broke down 2019 on the drive so oh that's right i do this how far do you make it in 19 15 minutes okay so you've already beat that that's good progress yeah progress and you're a couple seconds quicker too yeah yeah yeah it is you want to trade yeah we're in the volvo see how this goes not too bad [Applause] it rides pretty good back here pretty smooth it's not too bad the the bench seat's pretty cushy not a lot of legroom though i couldn't do a thousand well miles you for the ride it's not too bad back here overall not too bad i would not want to be in there for eight hours at a time the back seat's a little cushy it's definitely a little louder but uh if you had some headsets or earplugs wouldn't be too bad we'll see what else we can find along the way it's uh it's quite the machine one of my favorite cars here so it's an honor to be in it again [Music] we are deep in the middle of amish country we've passed at least seven or eight buggies so far it's pretty cool to see out here in indiana [Music] well after we departed from bryant we haven't really seen much action just cruising through corn fields in ohio so far but we just pulled up to taco bell to get some food and look who it is nice nice put some miles on her there you go still looking pretty how's the drive been loud yeah does it have full exhaust day of driving i think that's good roads are good all right well it's dinner time yep let's see you guys a little hard to see but welcome to bowling green ohio this is the wood county museum checkpoint number two for the day we breezed by checkpoint number one because we were chasing down bryant and the javelin so we get some photos of him going down the road by the way you can check out all our think we got about hour hour and a half left of the drive so not too bad making good time it's about it's 9 14. what's up bryant faster today than i've ever had huh it would be cool as if i rode in your van and you drove my car yeah you need that a little louder now it's a lot loud thank you yeah i could tell both we got headphones now so that's that's good yeah except now my ears are we even got music now we're figuring out little bits of pieces of stuff on the way there we didn't stop to watch them rebuild clark's motor on the side of the road we stopped by and say hi oh yeah it was down to the block broken lifter piston rocker three pistons speaking of clark and in his engine rebuild shout out to carl scott the first drag week winner in 2005 i went on the trip back then and carl scott actually rebuilt his engine in the parking lot of bowling green kentucky and that's when we realized just how crazy some of these races are to make it to the next track and finish the race we haven't seen too much carnage on the road today but we there's always cars hidden here and there uh we don't always see all of them but we like to bring you guys as much of the real-time action and uh struggles that these guys go through to finish strike week you guys are gonna hit the road so are we we'll see what else we find along the way hotels about an hour away [Music] the rolling car show continues and made it to the hotel and the parking lot is full of drag wheat cars i love this we're really hoping that clark rosenthal is back on the road with steve what a thrash that that car had down to the bear block when we saw them hopefully get a little bit of sleep so they can get deeper into the sevens closer to that six second goal tomorrow but make sure to subscribe to our channel
