in this video I will introduce you to the e-tone Eaton Eaton whatever the elite 750 shortwave radio I will show you what this radio does and some of its features and I will explain to you why having this type of a radio may help you get through the next scheduled pandemic or if they fail at that the looming World War the price for the e-tone Eaton Eaton Elite 750 is 369 dollars [Music] affiliate link below and Eaton Eton Eton did not send me this radio for free I paid full price for this radio using the monies collected from my paid and supporting YouTube channel members those are the members that press the join button or the thanks button below now before I begin please allow me to take a moment and explain that I am not a shortwave radio expert I am just a simple YouTube hobo graciously sharing what I learn to those that choose to listen And for those that do not like to listen or for those that are just here to leave stupid comments please take this opportunity to go away now as previously stated I am not a shortwave radio expert and prior to getting this radio the last time I even touched a shortwave radio was about 1974 listening to my dad's shortwave radio for fun and entertainment this is the sort of thing that we resorted to before Al Gore invented the Internet for us and when TVs only had four channels but I do know how to read a user manual and I do know how to turn the knob on the radio to tune in a station and those are pretty much the basic requirements for using this radio so anyway recently while observing how our government seems to be doing everything within its power to get us into World War III I decided that having a shortwave radio in these troubled times might not be a bad idea and just a quick message for anyone else that might be currently experiencing feelings of dissatisfaction with our current Administration and government just remember and never forget that our current Administration is the most diverse Administration and government in the history of the world and apparently that is far more important than qualifications or experience so we've got that going for us now as you can see behind me I have quite an assortment of radios already but what you cannot normally see is that on the floor I have even more radios and the average uninformed viewer may assume that I can already listen to anything that I want with all of these radios however the truth is that even with all of these radios I can't all of those radios are gmrs radios with a few ham radios thrown in just to give the sad ham something to complain about and with all of those radios I can only receive gmrs frequencies a couple of ham bands and some very short ranges of UHF and VHF frequencies and a couple of the more expensive ones are also able to receive airband and that is one of the reasons why you may want or need a shortwave type radio so that you can listen to more stuff some of the other reasons you might want or need a shortwave radio are number one maybe you're just a radio dork and you require more toys to fill that hole in your soul if you're preparing for the upcoming Civil Wars or World War III being started by our totally incompetent yet diverse government or if you want to listen to actual news and actual information instead of just what government agencies or big Tech decide you should be permitted to listen to for any of that you need a good shortwave radio because a good shortwave radio can pick up radio stations and ham transmitters from around the world and this is because unlike most other radio bands the shortwave radio type frequencies can travel around the world via the skip now I wanted to explain to you what the skip is but as many of you probably already know I am not a ham radio operator and according to some people because I have not taken a 35 question multiple choice test to get the ham radio operator's license I should not be permitted to speak on such complicated topics as skip on the YouTubes I should not be allowed to even talk about it so instead I have asked a friend of mine that is a licensed ham radio operator to explain to me and to you what skip is and why we can hear shortwave radio signals from around the world this is Jason from the ham radio 2.0 YouTube channel my call sign is kc5hwb and I've been a ham radio operator since 1994. Randy loves that Randy if you knew anything about terminology at all you would know that skip is actually a term used in CB radio don't generally use the term Skip and ham radio but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it generally we refer to skip as propagation or simply band openings band openings so what a band opening is or what skip is it's basically defined as being able to talk on HF or shortwave frequencies over longer periods of distance this can be due to atmospheric conditions and the ionosphere opening up or closing to allow certain radio waves to either pass through the atmosphere or to be bounced off of the atmosphere or sometimes ground wave propagation what we call Ground weight what we call radio waves that bounce up and down the Curve mature of the earth like this sorry to tell you guys that the Earth is round not flat so ground wave propagation can be a radio signal that bounces along the ground and can be heard from distances of 50 to 100 miles to up to 500 to A Thousand Miles and Skip is usually referred to as propagation or radio signals that come up into the atmosphere and bounce off a certain layer of the atmosphere and then come back down to the Earth several hundred maybe several thousand miles later the ionosphere is made up of about four layers the d-layer the E layer the F1 and the F2 layer during the day all four of these layers are present at night the D layer disappears completely and the F1 and F2 layer become one F layer so you have less layers so shooting skip is a real thing but we just usually don't call it that in ham radio so when you purchase the Eaton Eton Eaton whatever the elite 750 in the Box you will receive a printout of a review of the radio from CQ amateur radio magazine which is actually a good read and gives you an idea of what the radio can do you will receive the user manual which goes over all of the features of the radio and how to use the radio it is very well written and easy to understand English and several other languages and I highly recommend that you read it you will receive [Music] a power brick one end plugs into the radio the other into the holes that you find in the walls of your home to Supply electrical energy to the radio although the radio is also battery powered so this is optional and you will receive the etone Eaton Eton Elite 750 shortwave radio it actually receives more than just shortwave signals in addition to shortwave radio signals this radio also receives commercial am and FM radio long Wave radio which is 100 to 519 kilohertz medium wave which is 520 to 1710 kilohertz and shortwave which is 17 11 kilohertz to 29 999. kilohertz it also receives air band which is in the 118 to 137 my gigahertz range and all of those just mentioned frequency ranges you will find several long-range ham bands and the CB Radio band and for those of you wondering this radio can also receive single sideband the radio can store 1 000 channels so you can save frequencies and scan through them and it has two built-in antennas one which is for the medium and long wave bands which is directional and for shortwave it has a telescopic antenna which when fully extended is just over three feet long three feet three inches to be exact ly the radio is very substantial and when you have the four de-sized batteries installed it weighs about six pounds it has a folding handle as well as these two steel front grip handles for manhandling the radio on the rear you'll find storage for the optional de-sized batteries it takes four batteries it has a left and right line out output that you can put into an amplifier it has this vestigial storage door for putting whatever you want in however the power brick does not fit [Music] it would have been nice if it did on the right side you'll find two BNC type connectors or a shortwave antenna or an FM antenna it has a switch for switching between the internal built-in antennas and the external antennas you would connect here and you can also connect what the experts call a long wire random type antenna which is just a long wire that would plug in here and you'll connect the other end to a ground such as a cold water pipe in your house or a stake a metal stake pounded into the ground and I have found that even if you're using one of the internal antennas which do work fairly well if you connect the radio to a ground it receives signals much stronger and on the other side all you will find is where you plug in the optional external power supply thusly the radio has one large speaker here and it is actually a very good sounding speaker it sounds almost like a Boombox if you're playing commercial FM radio through it it has a connection for earphones it has a line in input which you can use for putting your iPod or something into to play through the speaker it has separate bass and treble controls and a volume control it has a light that you can turn on and off and it also has timers and a snooze feature as well as an alarm so you can set it to turn off automatically after listening to it for a certain amount of time or you can set it to wake up to the soothing sounds of shortwave radio static it has oh I almost forgot [Music] foreign [Music] oh so satisfying where was I it has this very nice analog signal meter which will display the signal strength of the signal that you're receiving it has this fairly large and easy to read display which is about three and a half inches by about two inches the radio has various buttons and functions which I will review momentarily a large and very smooth frequency tuning knob which has a nice smooth heavy feel to it just like Barry White power on and off sleep button for the aforementioned timers antenna attenuation button RF gain squelch and single sideband bfo bfo beat frequency oscillator as opposed to variable frequency oscillator I don't know what it means and I don't really care the radio is very simple to operate you simply turn it on by pressing the power button normally you would extend the antenna which I can't really do here or connect a external antenna to it you select what band you choose to listen to with these buttons here and you can either use the heavy smooth Berry White like knob to tune through the frequencies or you can use these buttons to tune up and down or scan and automatically find the next active frequency or you can switch to channel mode by pressing this button and going through your pre-saved channels as previously mentioned the radio can store up to 1 000 channels or memories and it separates the Memories by pages and then channels as shown here so I am currently on page zero could change that to page one and then scroll through those presets Etc you'll notice that while scrolling through the frequencies using the smooth Berry White like knob the signal meter will change indicating the strength of the signal if you have a very large antenna and the signals are too strong it can actually overwhelm the radio and that is what the antenna attenuator is for you see this meter here this indicates the attenuation right now there's zero attenuation if I press it once it attenuates or deafens the antenna by 10 DB press it again brings it down by 20 DB I haven't had to use that yet while playing with the radio but that's what that is for it has a button to switch between wide band and narrow band however I have found that the wideband doesn't really do much everything seems to come in best while on narrow band if you're listening to shortwave or am frequencies you would use the single sideband button to switch between standard am and either upper side band or Lower Side Band and the number pad is for manually inputting frequencies directly so as you can see even though it may be somewhat intimidating the functions are actually very simple and if at any point you get confused or overwhelmed you will find this to be very comforting now allow me to demonstrate how to actually use the radio in a real world situation so if I want to listen to what's going on around the world on the shortwave frequencies I simply hit the shortwave Button as you can see I am currently in memory mode as indicated by the page and memory preset that's showing there so I could go through my presets or I could switch back to frequency mode and enter in a frequency directly or use the heavy and smooth Berry White knob and scroll through the frequencies if I wanted to switch to a different band I would simply choose it from the available buttons I can switch to it and then just scroll through or switch back to memory mode and go through some of my presets there is an RF gain which you can leave at Auto or you can turn it up to Max which is normally what you will get when it's in Auto you would use that again for very strong signals that might be overwhelming the radio if you have a big antenna in combination with the attenuation button the radio has a very interesting squelch if I turn the squelch down you'll hear the static 34. now notice what happens when I turn up the squelch I don't know if you can hear that but instead of the static just cutting off like normal squelches it's more of a soft squelch that slowly lowers the volume of the static so I can choose how much to lower the static a little or a lot or all the way which is very nice out of all of the radios that I have I have never seen a soft squelch like this there's a little bit of a signal there's a little bit of a signal coming from an airplane underneath so I can [Music] so I can lower the squelch to pick that up if I were to come across a station that was transmitting in single Side Band I would be able to tell because it would sound like Donald Duck I can switch the mode to Upper or Lower Side Band and try to tune it in using the sideband bfo knob I can switch to medium wave which will now use the directional antenna which by the way spins around forever there's also a jack for plugging in a long wave or midwave specific antenna external antenna as I go through the bands for example if I go back to shortwave you'll see an indicator of the meter band that I'm on as I hit the button I can jump to other meter bands for example the 11 meter band or the 16 meter band instead of scrolling through I can jump for example to 11 meters so as you can see even though some people may find the radio intimidating at first it is very simple to operate you do not need to be a shortwave radio geek or expert to operate this radio overall the radio has a very good quality feel to it the buttons and knobs are all tight and sturdy the whole radio has a solid and substantial feel to it this is definitely not a toy obviously because of the price but also due to its construction the built-in antennas are very good but for better reception it is best to connect it to an external antenna and you do not need to spend a bunch of money on a fancy antenna you can just stick a 75 foot long piece of wire right there stick it in close the little clamp and run it out the window to a tree and then another piece of wire into the black which is the ground and run that off to a cold water pipe or to a ground stake in the dirt and that will work far better than either of the internal antennas so is this the best shortwave radio you can buy if you're some kind of shortwave radio geek I am sure you could find plenty wrong with it and plenty to complain about but for normal people that just want a good quality sexy looking and easy to use shortwave radio this one is perfect
