why cyberkey sorted in popularity despite foreign decline commonly used saying that that's the meaning of a particular domain usually ends up being the person who got there first or the person who stuck around for the longest in the case of the creator we'll be discussing today when you're both first and last you end up becoming virtually unstoppable cipher pk is a content creator who despite being relatively popular since the very beginning of fortnite has recently seen an absolute explosion in viewership during a time at which almost every other creator has witnessed a decline ninja went from 180 million per month to 30 million per month tv went from 100 million per month to 20 million per month but cipher pk went from 15 million to 75 million views per month cypher seems to know something about the youtube algorithm that nobody else does and in this video we're going to try and break down this knowledge into understandable terminology so we can attempt to answer why cipher pk exploded in popularity despite fortnight's decline nice cyberpk was launched into fortnite's mainstream from the very beginning of the game's release he had learned his video making and entertainment skills from over six years of runescape elder scrolls online and other variety games at the time i was playing runescape and i started recording runescape videos and editing them everyone on this dude everyone on mama car everyone on mama called protect me guys protect me i'm gonna die so when fortnite was released he already had a baseline understanding for what type of content he needed to post in order to grow an audience cipher pk began to display this ability to appeal to the algorithm when he would gain traction for his trap tower videos in early january 2018. oh my god and the trap tower actually got way more views on other channels than it did on my channel at the time like it got over 10 million on facebook and it got millions of views on other like top clip channels they actually didn't get that many views on my channel but it did explode on god i other channels angle and everything gg these videos helped him to stick out from the noise in the beginning because the idea was incredibly witty and unique and the explosion didn't really happen until the trap tower cliff like the famous viral ensuring that his audience continually returned to his videos and streams ultimately popularizing his content on youtube cipher pk seemed to understand this to some extent stating that part of the reason he was making the trap tower videos was because i want to be twitter famous many of these videos would not only go viral did i say that on twitter but they would also be included into those classic top moments compilations bcc trolling hit me up and they were like hey your clip is awesome do we have permission to use i'm like yes and then like all these other you know facebook pages and everyone was sharing it and it just like 10 20 30 40 million views it got posted on like the fortnite reddit which was ultimately beneficial for sci-fi as it will make his face more recognizable so that when his videos or streams are recommended to a potential viewer what's funny is that we actually didn't used to put my face in the thumbnails because the videos would do worse with my face than the thumbnails and now we only put my face in the thumbnails because the videos always do better with my face and thumbnails like there was a shift it went from don't put your face in the thumbnails because the videos will do worse to put your face in the thumbnails because they'll do better and people always like talk crap about like my my thumbnails and whatnot but like it's it is just how youtube works it's a business they see the recognizable face they want to click on it okay that's literally how it works that's why that's also another reason why we reuse a lot of thumbnails i i could update them but reusing thumbnails is actually not necessarily a lazy thing it's like both lazy but also brilliant because it's the familia the familiar face and the familiar expressions allows the viewers to be more retainable there was a higher probability that the viewer would click the video increasing the click-through rate and boosting their performance it would also help cipher gain a reputation as the quote trap king with his name even being endorsed by ninja another element that ultimately helped him stick out amongst the wider audience but while cipher got the ability to play with individuals like ninja he unfortunately wouldn't see similar levels of success with regards to view count on youtube ninja took off and completely dominated the mainstream as the adolescent audience surrounding fortnite were looking for their new god cypher certainly saw reasonable success on youtube often gaining between 10 and 15 million views per month but these numbers didn't really stack up to the 100 million per month being received by the top dogs like ninja and t few however things didn't stay like this forever and as time progressed the viewership received by these top creators would begin to go back to cipher surprisingly at a time when fortnite appeared to be declining in popularity when everything else mentioned seems to paint somewhat of a dim picture for youtube's fortnite genre we have to ask the question how could cipher's viewership increase possibly be the case the first topic that we'll discuss with relation to cipher's youtube popularity explosion is actually the decline of the other creators previously mentioned and what felt like late 2018 early 2019 we started to see an explosion of click-bait media relating to the death of fortnite is fortnite dying and will be gone in 2019 is fortnite dying the truth it's fortnite's dying why is it dying and why does that make me so happy these videos were somewhat reasonable and there was fairly basic data to back up the statement that fortnight was declining in popularity such as the google trends graph for fortnite showing that the game had fallen off since its peak what this seemed to do for many the only thing about google trends is that the the longer something's been around the less the google trends would correlate because people initially like oh what's fortnite they go and google it now you tell someone fortnite they already know what it is so they're not gonna go google it uh but epic actually released numbers recently in the apple lawsuit that indicates that fortnite never really died or declined it actually has still been extremely popular it's one of the most popular games in the world 80 million average players for the you know in one of the months which is makes it the most played game in the world um so using google trends is not a very accurate way it can give you some correlation to things but not necessarily accurate in terms of the success of the game the pros was given the feeling that they needed to jump to the next big game in order to maintain their viewership which was also likely reinforced for those who saw an initial decline in their monthly view count for this reason we saw people like t few nick merc symphony tim the tatman and many others jumped to warzone while ninja and myth went to valerian i have access to valorant and i'm about to happen a game this is going to be first impressions all of which assuming that these were going to be the next big youtube gaming matter but this meta never really seemed to eventuate people didn't randomly get interest in warzone or valerian just because people were making videos on it and there was now this massive audience still wanting fortnite youtube content but very few competent creators still making it in comparison it's also very really hard to make fortnite content um especially these days you can't just pl back then you used to be able to just play games and upload good wins okay i got a 15 kill solo win we got a squad win with the boys we dropped 50 kills we went duo squads and tilted towers used to be able to just upload good gameplay which is actually what you're seeing a lot of war zone right now on warzone people are just uploading good gameplay with like meta guns and sometimes the game plays around the gun which makes a little bit more unique but a lot of times it's just like oh i dropped 30 kills or i dropped 40 kills i'm uploading this as a video um and that worked early in fortnite does not necessarily work as well right now at all yeah you have to actually have really unique content for it to work and cash app just dropped 69 gifted subs which is actually the amount of pounds i've lost in the last seven months have lost 69 pounds in the last seven months that's one gifted sub per pound cash app thank you for the love i appreciate it thank you for recognizing my weight loss you have the best hair on twitch thank you so much for that i appreciate it thank you thank you speaking of hair we chat 10k subs i'm dyeing my hair and we're probably going to get that in the season seven lunch i got to figure out how i'm gonna diet and what color i'm gonna diet and and if i'm going to regret it and just get a buzz cut afterwards we will see say early 2018. so here's what cipher did differently in comparison to almost every other big fortnight youtuber and streamer he simply stuck to his guns and continued with the fortnight content while every other creator was departing in droves looking for the next big game a lot of content creators for this game have come and gone but we're still going strong into 2021 and i'm super excited for what's in store perhaps cypher's reasoning for sticking to fortnite instead of looking for a new game was because he had experienced a similar phenomena back when he was streaming elder scrolls online um and every time i tried to play you know overwatch or h1z1 or pubg viewership would tank by 80 the chat would slow down and i would just be like wait like you know i can't grow like this i'm i'm nervous i just go back to elder scrolls and then i don't pursue overwatch and i don't pursue h1z1 with his past experience warning him of the potential dangers in leaving the game you'll initially gain your success on the ultimate result of so many youtubers so it's a little off because in reality i actually grew from that because when i went to fortnite i had a huge decline in viewership but because i liked the game uh i actually stuck with it and became more popular than i ever imagined so that that that actually changed my perspective on the whole like i don't i don't mind viewership declines uh [Music] good is just re like just recently like when i first started playing warzone i would barely have 2 000 viewers barely uh and actually the past few days i've been playing warzone solo to like five to seven thousand viewers and and that those those numbers are almost comparable to the fortnite numbers so i actually uh learned that like it's it's a process right you you initially dip in viewership when you're trying something new but if you're enjoying it you're having a good time people catch on and your viewership eventually goes up uh if you're doing your job right um so it's just a process which i learned from another thing is that we didn't just stick to our guns with the fortnite content creation uh the reason why a lot of people's viewership declined on fortnight is because they they kept uploading the same kind of content but we really innovated the content in a way we jumped on trends we created trends uh just recently we created the trend where we react to people's gameplay with their webcam covered uh and their username covered and we try to guess who the player is we created that trend jack created that we uploaded a few videos of that those videos were wildly successful getting millions of views and a bunch of youtubers and content creators copied that trend and i'm not saying copied in a negative connotation they did their own version there's nothing wrong with that but they you know they copied the trend um because it was working and it so we started we started experimenting we started really trying out new things and coming up with newer concepts that that would work because uploading just like normal gameplay didn't work anymore departing the fortnite genre seemed to be that the audience who still wanted to watch fortnite content began to come to cyber's channel boosting his views and subscribers substantially a similar phenomena also seemed to happen with many other creators who just stuck with the fortnite content while everyone else bailed such as mr fresh asian and x2 twins who saw an increase from around a million views per month in january 2020 to 40 million per month in december 2020. this good fortune being a dramatic decrease in competition then coincided with another uncontrollable phenomena that would help cipher pk's youtube statistics dramatically the bizarre change in living conditions witnessed in 2020. talking about the pandemic has become such a cliche at this point so usually we'd avoid it but in this circumstance it's vital when analyzing cypher's recent success more people are watching right now due to quarantine because people are home there's more people watching due to quarantine so in march and may 2020 as many of you know the whole world was forced to stay at home this resulted in a search volume increase for the term fortnite and fortnite youtube causing an increase in cipher's youtube viewership it's hard to quantify exactly how many of cipher's extra views were a result of forced isolation but even if we make an assumption of say 10 to 20 that's still better than nothing and worth noting but youtube wasn't the only thing that was blowing up as a result of forced isolation there was another platform that had gained mass popularity in early 2020 which cipher would take advantage of ultimately leading to higher viewership over on youtube just recently i started uh uploading uh tick-tock videos um how's that been going there's there's some people that are on board and like going full for it and then like are you doing this very hesitant cypher pk would upload his first tick tock in january 2020 which happened to be the first month where his youtube content began to really blow up as mentioned cipher was hesitant at the start but the tick tock algorithm would bless his content and his first few videos would gain upwards of three million okay so the tick this is a little bit inaccurate because the tick tock we started it around that time uh it got some initial views but we only uploaded a few times in the first month we only recently started uploading our youtube shorts to tiktok um but yeah the tick tock didn't really play too much of a role because we were only on it for a little bit in the beginning and then we only recently got back into it um i don't think it it played as big of a role in defeating the youtube videos but i do think that we became popular on tick tock because the youtube videos were already popular so then i say okay i'm gonna upload a couple stuff and i've only uploaded two clips and they both like kind of blew up you know i don't know how the numbers work or anything sure their algorithm is insane so considering tick tock also seem to be experiencing this similar pandemic induced blow blow-up at the same time that youtube was cypher's tick-tock videos would continually perform well gaining around 1 million views per video consistently ultimately boosting his public image making him more recognizable over on youtube but this third-party recognizability wasn't only exclusive to tick tock a similar thing was happening over on twitch as cipher was gaining between a hundred thousand and two hundred thousand followers every single month we gain a lot of followers on twitch like a lot every month we gain a lot of followers doesn't always equate to more average viewers but over time it does a month before his youtube would explode considering twitch and youtube seem to be somewhat synonymous with each other cypher's growth on twitch would automatically funnel viewers through to his content back on the youtube platform on top of this his youtube explosion would then feed viewers back to his twitch stream picking up 46 and 47 000 twitch viewers during his most substantial months on youtube creating cross growth between both his youtube and twitch channel most of what we've discussed so far relates to the circumstances surrounding cyphers blow up but we haven't actually analyzed the content itself what was different about the videos that exploded in popularity as opposed to the years of previously posted videos that performed to a mediocre extent well to begin we should let cypher explain his methodology for coming up with video ideas which will act as a baseline for the next section of our video the type of content you're posting also has to be somewhat unique um find something that's missing in in whatever game or genre you're playing it doesn't have to be completely missing but something that people are looking for people are searching for but there's a lot not a lot of it um and make that content if if that's something that you can do so i for explain that his strategy for going viral surrounded finding a genre or idea that people were searching for and providing content for that genre in a better way than anyone else was able to this strategy would reveal itself in uploads such as we need to talk about fortnite in which you would discuss the earlier mentioned narrative that the quality of fortnite was in regression there has been the hashtag hashtag uh rest in peace fortnite the trending nature of the fortnight is dying topic mixed with a little bit of disappointment drama and nostalgia helped this video to gain over 4 million views a similar nostalgic tactic was employed when seif would upload a video titled bringing tilted towers back og tournament rebuilding the classic tilted towers and battling it out with some of the other og pro players i brought back tilted towers we recreated tilted towers this was such a cool tournament however in this video rather than using drama and disappointment cipher would replace these elements with collaborations from many other well-known creators such as nick marks aiden and nikki 30. we're watching lick first let's see who's next landing boosting the recognizability and credibility of the video one final piece of content uploaded at the end of march also stands out as having some of a similar strategy to the og oh dude the talent shows how i won lachlan's 20 000 trio fashion show video which would gain 12 million views making it one of the most popular on his channel hey it's yoshia mario the potential success of this video had been proven in the past after cipher had uploaded a 7 million view video with an almost identical title three months previously however the second time around there was double the prize money being offered making the video more enticing to the viewers i don't think prize money really entices the viewers more or less to be honest with you i i think a lot of viewers are very numb to prize money especially when it comes to fortnite because like especially the early tournaments they were like million dollar tournaments hundred thousand dollar tournaments 500 000 tournament like people don't really care about the prize money as much you put in the title you know to make the title more clickable but twenty thousand versus ten thousand i think the the one that did 12 million views uh did better because it was a more elaborate video and there was it was a talent show that was a little bit more well produced so like people really hopped on that both of these videos had employed the previously discussed tactic of collaboration specifically with lachlan another creator who had stuck to his guns and continued making fortnite content despite the wider opinion that fortnite was on the decline on top of all of this cipher would also set his content and video style up in a way where he was able to pump out a video every single day and since the youtube algorithm just feeds you content from the creators you've already watched in the past these months during which he'd receive whopping view counts would act as a baseline for recommending cipher's content in the future cipher would also brand his videos with his face in it so that every single thumbnail was almost the exact same helping his videos to stand out as trustworthy also enticing a returning audience as the viewers already kind of knew what to expect since cipher's massive viewership explosion his views have backed off a little bit as he now averages around 40 million per month which is less than the 75 million he was receiving in april and may 2020 but substantially better than the 15 million per month he was receiving back in the day as a whole the blob seems to have come from oh he doesn't cover so here's the thing he's not covering a pretty crucial detail so 15 million back in the day the 40 million these days right but that 15 million is coming from the second channel now so more cipher pk averages the 10 to 15 million views that my main channel used to average back then and that doesn't include the cypher shorts channel which averages more than the main channel which averages like 40 million so it actually it actually went from 15 to 75 to now 40 million views on the main channel 40 million views on cypher shorts 15 million views on more sacrifice and cypher plays is like a different it's a different genre it's minecraft it's it's whatever but it still averages a good amount of views so like it's actually doesn't really paint the full picture here at the end i don't know if he covers this i don't think he covers the second channel seems to have come from a more sophisticated understanding of the youtube algorithm so it's easily it's easily almost 100 million views on average now fortnight content on top of this cypher has gotten more advanced ensuring his audience consistently returns for his daily uploads aided by growth on third-party platforms such as tick tock and twitch overlooking all of these elements is the simple but out of control factor being that the competition for quality fortnite content on the youtube platform has declined significantly helping cipher to stand out from the noise while simultaneously boosting his market share this was the story of why cipher pk exploded in popularity despite fortnite's decline so it's a well produced video uh definitely did his research i think he missed a couple things but you can't can't expect someone to to catch everything right but i do think missing the the second channel and shorts channel is that's a big miss because second channel goes crazy on views as well and then if you go to cypher shorts cypher shorts also goes really crazy so i think it's important to point that out also guys if you're not subscribed to cypherplays we just uploaded a new video
