REACTING to *Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events*JIM CARREY IS WILD(First Time Watching)

all right guys welcome back to another reaction video my name is James I'm noou I'm Haley and I'm Stella and today we are going to be watching lemony snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events so this is a and this is just based off of my Google search so if I get it all wrong I know it's based off of the kid series that came out in like the super late 90s early 2000s um and there are two different versions of this thing this story there's this version with Jim Carrey and then there's a version with uh what's his face Neil Patrick Harris um and it was like a series on Netflix so I don't know um I've heard good things about this I have become a lot more of a Jim Carrey fan after watching the Sonic movies strangely enough gotcha um so I don't know if you have you have any of you guys read this series or like I have I read it I've seen the film and I've seen the series so I'm kind of like an expert I've seen pretty much every version of this so I'm going to be the resident but I have probably forgotten a out of it cuz it's a long series there are 133 books in the series dang oh my God hopefully they don't try to fit the whole freaking Series in this two hour movie right man they may um Haley do you know anything about because I know you read like the Percy Jackson series and stuff like that maybe I'm getting the timelines off I feel like they're similar release times uh I think Percy Jackson's a little later but I think I read the first book of this series like a super super super long time ago so do not count on me to remember literally anything no I feel like I'd have two to be honest weirdly um but who knows so this is going to be an exciting rewatch and Stella's just going to school us on all the L um and we'll see what the heck happens so as always reac is negative idea of what to respect about this movie negative idea I mean unlike like zero I am like even l z this is going to suck yeah no no no it's kind of weird yeah I don't know why that was kind of weird I think it's cuz I'm used to the Transformer sound with the Paramount logo that's very different all right not to be like picky but I feel like that's way too profound of a logo for Nickelodeon it's like the universe and it's like that just doesn't fit that's not on brand I don't know some of their shows get kind of crazy out there what in the okay who it's going to be one of those [Applause] movies this animation what is happening I still think this is just like the opening I don't think it's going to be the style of the whole movie I don't think so either but I didn't expect this style like what this looks like a pict are they watching something or like yeah it feels like that or something oh yeah you're right cuz we got the like screen static I'm sorry to say that this is not the movie you will be watching dang the movie you are about to see is extremely unpleasant this is Jude Law if you wish to see a film about a happy little plenty of seating in theater number to however if you like stories about clever and reasonably attractive orphans reason attrac genre Italian food and secret organization you had Italian food as I retrace each and everyone of the bodair children's woeful steps my name is Lemony Snicket and it is my sad duty to document this tale anyone who knew Violet well could tell she was inventing something when her long hair was tied up in a ribbon Violet knew there was always something she could fashion into nearly any device for nearly every occasion I will never not get great satisfaction out of inventions like these Home Alone type things if they don't make any sense Claus bodair loved books the bodair parents had an enormous library in their mansion gosh a room filled with thousands of books on nearly every subject hovercraft maintenance hcraft maintenance and everything he read he remembered oh crawly things from the deep o sunny the youngest had a different interest she liked to bite things Sunny the relat very little that Sunny did not enjoy biting what is freaking happening so a normal child yeah exactly [Music] yeah mostly speaks in a series of unintelligible shrieks for instance which probably meant look at that mysterious figure emerging from the fog freaking love this movie already what is a banker like like Mr Po doing trudging through the sand to find us at Bry Beach what is this beach oh my gosh Peter pedig I'm afraid I must inform you of a extremely unfortunate event first of the series perhaps I'm very very sorry to tell you this but your parents have perished in a fire that's destroyed your entire home whoa what yikes the like odd you know roll dolles dark Whimsy is very interesting yes it's very stylized he's got a really interesting I love it because they keep the narration which is so important colle andem we' discovered he has to be started from a great distance through the refraction and convergence of light everything is still smoking yeah clouse now realized the smallest Discovery would send his mind reeling with questions what was this spy class yeah dude be careful were there other secrets about their parents' lives yet to be revealed he saw one spy glass and was like oh my god did I even know them how could they yeah a little dramatic clouse look he's a curious kid that's a little dram I mean like that's weird I'd be looking for something suspicious to happen this is an excellent opportunity to walk out of the theater living room or airplane where this film is being shown okay let me just all right bye I got to say Lemony Snicket's office is pretty uh pretty sick I know it's it's got some good aesthetic I don't know how much he spent on decoration but in the care of your closest relatives I'm taking you to live with your dear Count Olaf Count Olaf 37 blocks away sound normal I don't think that's what closest is supposed to mean we don't know a account Olaf yes yes of course he's either your third cousin four times removed or your fourth cousin three times removed roasted by sunny I also like how it's like it's not totally to see but it is this is not real it's strange oh hello that's so cute you must be the bodair feels very quaint is knew it it oh gosh I mean it's a little epic a little bit this the design of this movie like let's sleep outside feels like a place where what's his name like edwards's hands or whatever yeah yeah yeah dude it straight got like an Illuminati eye on the door all right Count Olaf what oh gosh hate [Music] that intrude Jim carre is going to Jim Carrey in every movie yeah that's the thing you can't go into a movie thinking he's not going to hello hello hello I am your beloved Count Olaf welcome to my loverly home I mean may you find Solace within the womb like warmth of its dowy blue Orphus and cribo something something something to aan ring okay oh not exactly what I was going for but you get the idea I like his fit Guy Crazy my dear does he know their name wow okay okay but to be fair I would do that too that's not you Dr me it's not about how much I care I'm just a bad with names this must be CL goodness young close uh can you cut your nails what is this I'm sorry I don't speak messing with them the son's still up what the heck first impressions are often entirely wrong uh I feel like this one's right mhm the two of them were thick as thieves a phrase which here means fetching and biting for hours on scary cgy creepy CGA baby every morning cat Ola would order the bodair to do a great number of terrible chores that's his his just long Co to his mysterious Tower room just throw them away at that point just get new dishes just dip them yeah how did they get this baby to do this much acting orphans this is my acting troop oh my god orph oh why aren't you children in the kitchen preparing our dinner dinner cuz there's no kitchen to prepare dinner in on the back flip it oh my God we'll take it in the dining room at 8:00 oh my gosh absolute silence while we're rehearsing our plan but we've never made dinner it's already 7:30 8: just I mean yeah grab some of that yeah serve them at the stuff in the kitchen then Grand want it so bad oh my God straight up bat like there's just random oh gosh random dry noodles in a drawer what's with the eye actually it's all over the place I don't know most in organization actually we get it bro it's going to be you would you do it sir oh all right Sunny little help give the the jars to the baby to open and strainer no strainer thank you bro that'd be a real problem though why is it so hard to find good can openers on a total side note true I don't usually have problems is Louise Guzman it is oh my gosh turn it up is anybody what the heck oh my gosh strainer this guy's got problem Sunny has that pot coming I mean it's close but it's okay I guess if they just give it to them Sunny that's not a pot oh well it's Aon oh no okay you mean like We'll Wash it twice oh oh that's the pasta pasta yeah I was worried that wasn't pasta prehistoric times when dinosaurs rule the Earth they really just are like okay Jim car just do whatever for this scene is he trying to move on purpose like stop motion cuz it kind of look stop motion maybe I'm giving him more credit than he deserved they're not even going to eat it time to leave what do you want dinner is served it kind of works too it's kind of got a whole quaint Vibe Jennifer coolage too in the back desperate orphans gladly swim across an ocean of thumbtacks just to be eclipsed by the shadow that is cast by my good on W yeah because they don't have money I chose you two lovely children and your hideous primate all I ask in return is that you do each and everything that pops into my head while I enjoy the enormous Fortune oh that's pretty simple no you Sunny I I kind of get what he's saying no yeah you no the back up do you remember when Mom and Dad went to Europe then we found out they'd written a long letter just gotten lost in the mail it's just like that yeah but I don't think there's a long letter coming in the mail why yeah but there could be something that was already in the mail but that got lost quote unquote you know that's true like maybe this situation was not what they wanted mhm maybe something like sketchy is going on I don't know that spy glass he found their will is secretly inside of it anything like home again time to invent some stuff let's do it Sanctuary is a word which here means a small safe place in a troubling world like an oasis in a vast desert a the bodair enjoyed their evening in the sanctuary they have built together but in their hearts they knew that the troubling World lay just outside that's really cool though which I'm sad to say can be described in two dismal words cust wow what yay world thank you your nice business with you L did the nobody in court no none of the kids said hey uh hello freaking H bu I've been a bit standoffish which in this case is a big big word meaning pure evil dang let's lot better I feel like this movie is not do you know what kind of scientist he is I didn't have time for chat hello well maybe you should see who they are oh obsession with snakes goodness that's a little scary you must be honestly at this point i' be like can we just find a foster home or something these relatives are too crazy how do you what a firm grip like a bures python little Sunny you in between those bars bro yeah I mean he better be huge cuz he definitely got away no maybe he did what the heck uh-oh my man is straight up opening the door oh what the heck oh I'm sorry my ribbon just jammed oh dang dud oh my gosh fix it there we are now now wi out the last sense the attack of the incredibly deadly Viper ho worry little Poss man just stopped it with his bare possibly deadly Viper could possibly harmed her bro dude he doesn't need any V could just one of the least harmful and most friendly creatures in the animal kingdom what I only called him that to play a prank in those stuffed shirts down at the herpetological society he looks pretty dang big that's all I'm going to say why are we going to Peru I was wondering how are we all going to get out of town together and I thought Peru why is he trying to get out of town Peru don't they but why are we getting out of town this made a criminal Violet do you know snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them uh when threatened a snake will Retreat to a place that is quiet safe aort do you feel threatened by what a sanctuary where it can feel out of danger that's why Peru that spy glass I saw one just like unfortunate events May in fact be the first steps of a journey know that we love you know that as long as you have each other you have your your family and you are home you're loving parents is there something else dude you called it posing the torch is a WR passage that the last time he see it it was in this burnt house well maybe like how mom had one maybe who is he like the dad or something I don't know they are the sort of people who know that there's always something to invent something to read something to bite and something to do to make a sanctuary no matter how small dang and for this reason the bod were very fortunate indeed oh dang that was the movie what you guys think wow what a time very interesting that was that was yeah yeah I had seen a little bit of like the series so I got a Vibe for oh interesting um yeah this was this was I kind of liked it in its own weird way yeah this is it's interesting going from the series to this because like the series is objectively a much more faithful adaptation of of the books and I also I'm gonna be honest well this movie came out in 2004 I'm not actually 100% sure if all the books were were out at that point so they may not even have known really where the story was going but yeah people can fact check me I don't know anything about that but it's definitely like it's I think this stands really well as an adaptation because they they really said they were like we're just going to trim out because what we just watched is like basically the first three books of the series okay the entire first book is when they go to live with Count Olaf I think the second is then the reptiles and then the third is Aunt Josephine so they go and stay with all these different Guardians and each book is that that battle of trying to like count all is trying to get back at them but it keeps going for 13 books like they go on a ton they go they are at a boarding school they go all over the place and so interesting the fact that this movie CH like kind of chooses to end even if it's a little ambiguous and kind of vague but like they did choose to kind of craft an ending when there wasn't one yet well I like and I have no idea I'm what the kind of thesis of the series is but I do kind of like the IDE it is like weird and dark but like in its own really quirky Quirk is not the right word but like exent thats but but because of the kind of like tongue and cheek nature of it it somehow like manages to deal with yeah so it's it's like really okay so it's like really meta because it's not it it's aware that it's like oh it's a kids movie or a kids book or kids story and it's like making fun of that fact that it's like if we do this like this we can find a way to deal with these dark issues but then going further into the meta and doing that in a way that like I think is a profound message for anyone including children which is this idea of like look life is really dark and you can't count on it being like there is a happy ending but an important aspect of that is how you approach yeah creating any series of unfortunate events that may be your life because more likely than not you're going to have things that happen in your life that are not that are seemingly unfortunate yeah yeah I don't know and I think that's really cool the book has a really recognizable like voice um and that's partly because of the narration and I will say like Lemony Snicket is a character um that's sick he's not I I'm GNA this actually know much about like the real guy who wrote the books but Lemony Snicket is a madeup name and he does within the world he like you could kind of tell they were hinting at it with the spy glass but it's a really it's a pretty complex story to be honest and so like I think when I first saw this film I I hadn't read any of the books when I first saw this movie so I was going off of nothing um and I kind of felt like hm I feel like there should be more but now like watching makes me want to go read it it makes exactly and I think that's really effective because there's no way that they're going to it's it's a really long series they're not going to put everything into a into a hour 45 minutes and so I think the fact that they chose not to and they chose very carefully what to keep in and what not to it it flows pretty well and to be honest there's not a lot that pops into my brain that was like left out you know that is super crucial to the story yeah yeah I know then they did a good job for trying to put three books into one movie and also out of like a very long Series yeah that's very cool yeah and I just like the it had a very unique kind of vibe to it you know like the characters the world itself was very interesting and they didn't even what I liked also was that they didn't get into it too much they just had it there you know in the background and that's credit to the filmmakers at least I think to go like oh we're going to have it have this kind of surreal ass quality but just World building yeah and I'm sure I'm sure it fits like at least to me from what I'm getting from the story it fits the vibe very well yeah just the way that it looks and the way that the you know certain shots are shot and all that it it feels like it fits and a big part of the books was the artwork too at least for me like that's I think of the books and I think of the covers and they do both this film and this series even though they adapt the story really differently they do like that it's you can tell how crucial of an element the the style is because they really do their best like that the teetering house on the edge of the cliff and the really giant like creepy count Olaf's mansion and these are like out of and I I don't know if they've they've taken inspiration from the illustrations but there are like really cool illustrations of all of these places so you know they weren't going off of nothing that's cool I I just I liked it it was weird but I liked it maybe I just like Weir it's really good for readers it's a good movie for people who like to read and I feel like they just knew what they were doing and they were like look we're going to go for it and it is it's a thing but the only way to do it is to kind of just go for it and be like yeah it's it's very weird and very dark and like we're just going for that and I feel like Jim Carrey fit I mean I'm curious how count LOF is in the book but CU I think the danger with somebody like Jim Cary or at least the criticism that can arise is kind of it's like oh he's the same and everything sure but I I think it was a different flavor of Jim Cary oh totally might I dare to say I think I will say the one thing Count Olaf is not really funny in the books at least not that I remember and I think it's because as you read the books like you get this you have you spend more time with the characters you get more invested so you feel much more like personally angry characters that are wronging them and it's like consistently there I'll be honest that was a hard series for me to read when I was young because it was so frustrating because like these kids were constantly gaslit and like never believed and they were just like abused and manipulated and pushed around and it was so unbearable but um I I do think Count Olaf in the books is you do have to recognize like how evil he is and I think sometimes if he's a little too funny you can forget that he's evil and that's it's a it's a line but I I think Jim Carrey does a good job with it in this yeah yeah like I don't know much about the books and stuff like that but I I do like this that this movie it's weird cuz I'm sure this is different but I feel like if Jim Carrey was or if they casted someone else that was um supposed to be Count Olaf sure and he was played off as like extremely like serious I feel like that kind of would Clash a little bit at least with how the movie felt overall and just this is just the movie itself I'm not meaning about the books just because of how I feel like overthe top certain things were oh yeah and then also how dark feeling the you know the things that he was doing were yeah his character super over the top yeah so it does feel a little more like it adds another element to it the fact that Jim Carrey was Count Olaf you know no I agree I think it it plays into that like meta Narrative of like oh it's a kids's book like see how funny he is and like nice but it's but even watching it you're going like yeah but it's like super dark what he's doing like everything is incredibly sadistic but that's why I I that's why I'm saying I just I think it Jim K's kind of like take added this kind of like other element to it that allowed me to kind of like take it almost more seriously you know yeah yeah yeah that was cool yeah I don't know I liked it so I mean I don't know I mean let us know what you guys thought in the comments down below obviously um as always fling R
