with the recent release of the boons of event dlc the game kitchen's blasphemous closest shop as one of the most successful and critically acclaimed souls likes in modern video game history unlike neo mortal shell or even jedi fallen order blazamus took a unique approach to the becomingly oversaturated catalog of attempted dark souls reinterpretations by holding dear to mysterious lore collectible discovery and medieval design but entering the foray of two-dimensional metroidvania platforming intermittent with reactionary dodge-based combat while upon release the game was regarded as unpolished and even as far as underwhelming the massive appeal of its flamenco inspired world design not to mention gorgeous and highly detailed pixel graphics led to multiple dlcs and substantial improvements to quality of life that when comparing today's version 4.0 to that of september 10 2019 makes the end product feel like an almost entirely separate ip of course blasphemous is not entirely unique in trade and that's not what we're trying to say but rather that it transcends simply bearing the moniker of being a souls-like game through map interconnectivity rivaling the likes of metroid fast-paced and difficult 2d melee combat and music architecture and atmosphere paying homage to its civilian roots while the penitent one doesn't seem to play favorites regarding bosses or much of anything for that matter we certainly do and have no intention of breaking our penance of endlessly uploading boss ranking videos on a weekly basis let's get into it outside of the pixel graphics what makes blasphemous stand out is its fluid reactionary based combat allowing for a variety of differing strategies and attack combinations to tackle enemies and bosses alike so when a boss completely hinders that aspect of the game unsurprisingly it falls behind just about everybody else who doesn't enter marquiades who admittedly is hard for me to script all things considered as i actually thought three other bosses were worse than him but alas our ranking system what both alex and i find most irritating are his moveset and the hands the hands are fine but feel inconsistent and his moveset is entirely based around preventing you from attacking him not to mention it requires you to knock out all five to six of his supports before even having the opportunity to damage his head which even then gets occasionally blocked by a straggling laser or the works with a decently upgraded meia kulpa and the spinning combo ender this shouldn't be too much of an issue but still waste time beyond what we consider reasonable as sad as it is i actually find the inspiration for merchandise design to be the most interesting part of this fight which should say a lot about this wall near wannabe as the sole boss on our list to lack a health bar you can probably see where her low standing comes from neither of us have a real issue with perpetua but there's only so much fun to be had dodging highly telegraphed lightning bolts and it begins to show pretty quick she at least is kind enough to die quickly something her rather boring older brother could stand to learn more on him in a moment i'd like to say that before whoa wounds of eventide i had ezra says rock bottom although he now has much more characterization and motivation than previous beyond simple revenge for his sister's death so i hold him in a high regard because of that having the option to completely negate this fight is a plus in my book as he feels very repetitious and once you learn to utilize parries he has no menacing presence whatsoever not to say this isn't good there are some redeeming qualities namely in the second phase however chaotic said phase may be but like the knights of the anointed legion found in the holy wall esdras has far too much health to have a strong showing among other bosses [Music] even with no upgrades this fight is an open and shut blowout that said blasphemous has very satisfying weighty combat so it's not that horrible just wailing on a hapless target for a while with little disruption the most memorable part of this fight is the showcase of the penitent one's facial care routine which is equal parts grotesque and badass one thing the game kitchen evidently took pride in is recreating classic boss niches with a head and hands our lady of the chart visage is a take on the aptly named head and hands boss found commonly in nintendo titles actually it'd be more applicable to label this fight as a head and hand singular hand boss with a bit over half the fight spent with just the one paw and when she does eventually summon the second hand it gets a bit hectic sometimes verging unfrustrating although it is usually possible to fully avoid all impending attacks with proper positioning and timing with a vast move set my personal favorites being the hittable orange balls and the four pronged laser there's a wide variety of possible combinations that force the pendants in one to go on the defensive in an otherwise continuous onslaught to her brain speaking of the brain this is one of the most visually appealing bosses both in concept and final product with her design perfectly capturing the lore behind her looks long story short she was once a beautiful girl who in a similar vein to the covetous demon made herself ugly by burning her face off with boiling oil hence the thing we fight now i'm not sure how the hands play into the exposition but they do make you be on your toes and prevent you from being overly greedy the fight itself isn't so bad it just lacks consistency and due to her head always being above ground level it's impossible to make combinations thus it lasts far longer than most would like it to hands down the weirdest boss in the game expositors ai visual design and music all come together to form an extremely bizarre final product most people cite this as a negative with his unpredictable movement and confusing patterns serving to frustrate the vast majority of players jack and i clearly agree to an extent given his low placement but i think that the game is ultimately better for his inclusion as annoying as the snake things atypical movement is it adds a sense of unease unique to this fight that makes it far more memorable and while i'm on the subject i have no idea what the snake thing even is the lore is pretty detailed but never once does any mention of this thing come up whatever it is it's got a neat design as rng centric bosses go exposito is definitely on the more palatable side this was the moment in my playthrough that hooked me in a bell gargoyle's progression wall sort of way i find it odd that out of every boss in the game 10 piadot has the most electric dumask theme although it also fits very well relatively speaking up to the end of mercy dreams there was very little in the way of combat based challenge and without a doubt he's exceptionally difficult for a second boss in any game hence my belgarg oil reference even still you can cheese them through a high level club while in this scenario it boils down to simple mental endurance the main challenge comes through his tells of which are similar and any mistake in the way of greediness will get you hit i'd be remiss if i didn't point out how visually and auditorily great denbit is the lore is honestly just bizarre but otherwise this fight is really really fun i can't say it enough how good the bosses in this game are and while it does sound monotonous each and every boss in this game has redeeming factors that make them enjoyable with 10 piadot especially as only the second boss in the game [Music] cressanta has evolved the most of all the bosses since launch going from a mundane peri-fest to an extremely fast-paced much harder perry fest each of these extremes has their issues but i'd much rather experience the satisfaction of finally taking down the cracked out wounds of even tied edition super cresanta over the comically easy launch variant if you don't bother with the new dlc content though you get the fairly average and inoffensive face off that awaits most people once you figure out that you can dash attacker after a parry despite the knockback the encounter is essentially trivialized doubly so if you use the sword heart that widens the parrying window like i do cressanta is clearly meant to be a rival type character with character design mirroring the penitent one and a backstory intertwined with his but she doesn't quite do it for me if she had shown her face more throughout the game and carried a bit more of a presence this duel would be more interesting but as is she just kind of appears and gets owned [Music] if only an indication to how incredibly well made the dlc bosses were at number eleven we have today sengustias the third best main game boss it's neat how starkly contrasting the three sisters are within the rest of the desecrated cistern also fun to note that they're the egg of deformity don't think we would in the sense of anyways the fight two sisters have spears one has a bludgeon and at random all three form together into a singular spiritual representation of altas gracias in a rise of skywalker sort of way the arena is the first of few that have mechanical complexity beyond being a floor with neat background and tiles with it being an upward moving randomly generated platformer system like a certain rumor honey bottoms although much much more enjoyable you're gonna spend the majority of this fight climbing to higher ground and avoiding the bludgeon so commonly i can guarantee you falling to your death at least once although to counter make use of the sliding r2 move with which you can do triple damage with only one attack if they line up with repetition this fight goes from decently challenging to passively easy a note to the quality of its design in a kill or be killed land like custodia even the pope can kick some ass unfortunately for him the reciprocal is also true and he can get slapped around like a toy if you know what you're doing if you're feeling sportsmanlike you can let him fire up some attacks and shield himself none of which are terribly hard to avoid the first phase is pretty easy but i gave it some bonus points for having one of the best looking arenas in the game as well as a neat looking boss as cool as the first phase is he really hits his stride when he transforms into the first son of the miracle a big armored guy with a cord of the crimson king-esque face you've seen in all those cut scenes throughout the game this phase is a little trickier demanding that you attack the eye on the flying sword to pop his face hatch which buys him more time to send magic attacks your way once he's out in the open you can spam devlo to the lights on him to cut down his health a good chunk but it fortunately doesn't kill him in one cycle ensuring it isn't an anti-climax of a final boss esclibar is a bit on the easier side and definitely suffers a little bit for it but is undeniably a great spectacle regardless [Music] for alex and i this was in the sense of a total boss the least enjoyable amnesia and even though our individual rankings don't show it from an overall point of view i think we'd both agree with that take it's far from bad once again i'll bring up that anything beyond rock bottom and games like this are fun but especially compared to the other omens he does there's a lack of clear mechanical foundation the rest have as you'll see later on i called the molten thorns arena the least interesting with the worst arena award going to this one in a similar vein there just isn't anything going on that adds to the fight itself and most of her attacks will end up forcing you to the edge of the platform with your only other option being to hope and pray the poison circles will move enough when hit to provide an opening to slide under her attacks are generally monotonous up to the point of feeling lazy and is one of the least interactive bosses in the game at some points you'll be stuck frozen in place for 10 to 15 seconds waiting for something to happen and when she eventually does strike the majority of the time you have to play completely defensive with few openings for counters throughout the aoe is neat and provides much needed variation but all praise for the moveset goes right down the [ __ ] with the spinning attack i cannot stand this and i swear there is no way to avoid it in full i am fairly negative towards the amenisita of the chiseled steel although by all means it is fair due to her lackluster nature as a dlc addition [Music] this one is actually my least favorite of the montecitos but that doesn't mean it's a bad fight far from it this game has a very strong boss lineup but especially once you get down to the dlc fights it becomes difficult to pick favorites if i had to single out what i think it is that the molten thorn does worse than the others i find it's a diagonal dive based moveset less appealing than the others and don't think the crystals at summons do enough to offset this lack of interesting moves it's still intense and fast paced like the others with the crystal shield mechanic ensuring that you can't ever get too passive lest it regenerate i do think the two platforms on each side add some spice at least since you can't easily access them unless the crystals are currently on the ground and should the molten thorn attempt to regenerate her shield in one of these it takes a little quick thinking to disrupt it such as using a prayer rather than your sword i was originally a bit harsher on this boss in my head but jack made a good case for this fight to me so i'm a bit more willing to praise it now now this one is my least favorite amanocita mainly due to her repetitive nature and lack of interesting arena design all the others have components to their respective arenas that have legitimate impact on the gameplay although the strategy for this boss is to stay central anyways and the additional firewalls that expand as the fight goes on actually help that being said considering she's the first of four amenities and meant to be far early on she's an excellent starting point for the dlc and left me scouring the rest of the map virgil braille so as to summon the other three dawns although beyond the first time you fight her you'll realize her moveset feels light and generally underwhelming even more so when compared to the rest of her dlc counterparts i don't like it when she spins two axes around her double when in later phases because it already feels really luck dependent as to whether or not you take damage and basically impossible when the arena is tighter the rest of her moveset feels very dynamic however and even though she shares multiple attacks with other amenities they mix well in the sense of an overall attack pool the amenisita of the golden blades is a fantastic start to the stir of dawn dlc that does lack the difficulty and mechanical intensity that her three sisters share but still is absolutely a standout boss the bejeweled era was both my first and favorite of the four main montecitas although i initially wondered if it was because it was the most novel of the time i encountered it however the fact that jack also likes this one the most and the fun i had squaring off against it in spirit in the loudest fight confirmed to me that the bejeweled arrow is in fact the strongest variant between fancy trick shots and electric aftershocks there's a lot of chaos here forcing use of the wall climb mechanic to avoid some more dangerous attacks in particular the move where she fires an arrow into each elevation of the wall is very difficult to the point that i was never able to avoid it and had no idea what to do although i noticed that jack was able to escape it a few times in his gameplay here proving that it's not undodgeable lastly even though the amanecitas technically share a theme they all have their own corresponding instrument which is a neat touch i like the piano version the best which is the soundtrack to this one specifically this would be the best of montecito overall if not for the mayhem that is loudest we'll be up to bed down the road a few entries [Music] i can't exactly tell whether this is a truthful ranking or a blatant case of recency bias there were a lot of satisfaction points surrounding escoribar with the new ending at all but i feel as if there's something missing from this i'm assuming canon finale ah a health bar with no health bar there is also no sense of progress and it generally feels easy to the point of questioning was that it i'm not saying this fight should have more health if anything i think it'd be much worse if it was overly tanky but it's so short that i'm lucky i managed to kill myself after beating it twice so that we had enough gameplay to cover for this segment leading me to say that i very much appreciate how you just respawned from the top of the fight over the pre-do and with the first fight in mind his true form does a great job of expanding on the powerful powers you'd come to expect of the ruler of custodio each attack has flare and style in the visual design of the overall fight but most notably his ultra instinct form takes the cake among all other bosses personally it's difficult enough for a game to have three separate but satisfying endings not to mention three enjoyable final bosses to top that but the game kitchen went above and beyond with regards to both escribar and the lore of blasphemous as well [Music] queer say sorry i can't roll my r's is the final hurdle between you and crissanta although funnily enough he manages to overshadow her almost completely his surprise attack from below is just the first of many details of note to this encounter some others being his slick animations and cool pyramid head cosplay teleporting bosses are often frustrating but the game kitchen are wise enough to leave ample opportunity to get damage in following his attacks mitigating the common issue of these bosses being irritating to land hits on as for the problem of spawning inside of you and dealing instant unavoidable contact damage queer say spawns in the air and descends downwards as part of an attack cleverly masking an intelligent effort to prevent sheep shots on the occasion that he does spawn on the ground it is both in a set spot and not immediately damaging allowing a generous grace period for you to move out of the way the fight is visually appealing from the arena to the flames that fill it further raising queer says standing amongst his peers it's a testament to his coolness that he managed to beat out a hefty chunk of dlc bosses which is impressive considering how dlc bosses are almost always the cream of the crop [Music] i was worried this would be a shockingly bad boss based on what we got from the trailer just simply because it was hard for me to picture an enjoyable serpent enemy let's just get it out of the way and yeah i've had some miserable experiences with snakes and games before um i just don't think there's a lot to work with when it comes to a snake type enemy so that was also my expectation going into sierpes that being said this fight blew my socks off and shut down any lagging expectations through top-notch atmosphere and theme that truly is unmatched by anyone else in the game at first alex and i were both hesitant with this boss because it was so different from anything else we'd ever fought before although with good boss design comes elaborate strategy and when you figure out how to tackle his various moves excluding the spines which i still have no idea how to deal with you get into a focused mental zone no other boss even has the ability to set up while i typically find large health pools detrimental to the overall boss i find it rather fitting with sierpe's in tandem with his damage he doesn't actually hit for that much on his own most of his harm coming by way of the electric balls he shoots from his tail although i did try to fight him on new game plus and he promptly well just watch phase 2 isn't majorly different aside from theme intensity and more baggage in each of his attacks regardless due to how long this fight last stress builds over time so it's fine yet again wounds have even tied stunts it's immaculate boss quality that makes it the best dlc of the lot with sierpes as a prime example of unique boss design that makes me so excited to see what game kitchen has in store for blasphemous 2. [Music] the other montecitas were awesome right cool boss rush time fortunately for our sanity it isn't four massive health bars with re-fights of past bosses but rather one evolving a montecita who swaps between the traits of the others for every 25 percent of her health you deplete even still it isn't entirely rehashed with the archer phase having an upwards platforming gimmick reminiscent of the radiance from hollow knight sadly we have no footage of this because jack sauced too hard and did like thirty percent of her health in five seconds but trust me that it's a neat addition the music is also one of the best tracks in the game carrying a familiar sound to that of the main theme of the montecitos but with a much more epic and final tinge to it it's not that complicated if you're familiar with the other amanecitas as you will be at this point given defeating all four is a prequisite for fighting loudest but is still a really engaging blast of a fight that feels challenging and yet not too overwhelming as a proper souls veteran parrying is about rock bottom on my list of tricks i utilize in any given playthrough meaning with any game featuring parrying as an option i have that mindset that i can just time my dodges and go from there and that's where i'm totally wrong as we stated way back in the intro this game is marketed as a souls game labeled as a souls game yet plays like anything but so to summarize in a partial obi-wan quote your parry button is your life due to isidora's gargantuan health bar and absolutely ridiculous damage output even with kirsten score speed this fight is miserable if you have no means of defending yourself however what makes this fight so great is that her entire moveset can be strategically countered through just positioning any of her swipes in normal scythe attacks can open her up to counter opportunities with decent timing something every other boss in the game lacks on the scale izidora has what she also has is an extreme ramp up in difficulty from phase one to two so much so that my game self imploded even with a plus seven megalpa all sort of grades and on new game this fight will take you an extremely long time to beat meaning for players like me who tend to learn through repeated death we have it down to a science like madeir or fume knight it's beyond rare for a fight to be so good that you enjoy dying and as one of four fantastic bosses added in the final dlc the voice of the dead is a masterful example of two-dimensional boss design that within mere minutes proves herself as the peak of blasphemous boss catalog thanks so much for watching and we hope you enjoyed with our first video of 2022 out and many more to come we hope to continue growing and expanding both our audience and our own horizons as we begin working on adding other mediums and video games to our repertoire tune in next week as always and remember to like and subscribe if you haven't that's all for now deuces
