Super Mario Maker 2 has four different types of elements to choose from when making levels however what might just be the most interesting set are what's known as the items there are a total of 30 items in Mario Maker 2 and these range from being simple coins to very complex power-ups like the master sword since I've already done a video ranking the elements in one of these sections that being the gizmos I thought it'd be fun to rank all 30 items from the worst to the best now I think it's also important to think about what conditions I'm going to be ranking these based on since Mario maker is a level designer series to me it makes the most sense to rank these based on how helpful they are for making levels the more uses and more unique uses an item has the higher it'll be on the list now for the most part these are some of the most helpful items in the game so this ranking was incredibly difficult to come up with remember this is just my opinion and a lot of these are really close all that said let's jump right into our first entry alright the absolute most useless item in Mario Maker 2 is easily the red pow box this lets Mario activate a red pow block effect around him if he jumps into a ceiling this will be able to damage enemies break bricks and even activate other red pow blocks you can do this up to three times and then the power up is removed from Mario's head so what makes this item last place well it's simply because the red pow block was already an item before this was added in a DLC update pretty much every other item in this list is entirely unique from something else however this is pretty much the only one that has a full replacement plus this is kind of more limited than the normal block anyway since this can only be activated when jumping into a ceiling whereas the block can just come into contact with any surface this in the next item are the only items that I have yet to see a good creative use for in a level so for being generally useless this will take number 30. sticking with the 3D World masks we have 29 the Goomba mask now the concept behind this item is actually unique which is what put it above our last entry when Mario wears this every single enemy in the game will stop attacking him they'll still deal damage to Mario if he runs into them but they won't go out of their way to hunt him down this leads to some pretty funny results especially with some of the boss enemies like boom boom now with a concept as unique as this why is it so low well it's just not very useful like if this video was a power tier list this would be decently High since it eliminates pretty much all difficulty from a level but since this is based on building levels around these items eliminating challenges really not something you want from an item this really isn't too helpful outside of being kind of cool to see how many of the enemies react to it like I said I have yet to see a use for this item that's really creative I'm sure there are some good levels with it but I personally haven't seen any all right now we're getting into some of the items that I have actually seen used well starting with my arch nemesis 28 the frog suit now I've gone on record saying that this is probably my least favorite power-up in Mario Maker 2 and that has always seemed to upset a large portion of you so let me explain why I personally hate this item first off the good things this absolutely makes levels in the underwater and castle at nighttime themes significantly better the controls are really fast and smooth to use so in that context this item is fairly helpful but now let's get to the stuff I don't like trying to use this on land at all is atrociously slow instead of walking the developers thought it would be cute if Mario hopped everywhere when he used this but in practice this is more grading than trying to use a clown car in the Airship night theme the other features of this power up being able to jump higher and being able to run on water have their own drawbacks too the higher jump is only helpful on land and as I already said that is definitely not somewhere I'd want to be using this thing running on water is way more limited than it should be as well requiring Mario to not only be holding an item but he also needs to be at full P speed before hitting the water so surface plus running on water isn't really any different from running on the ground or a moving platform so essentially we have an item that can only be used well in 4 of 20 Level themes and even then those are still water levels no matter how hard you try those will almost always be worse than ground levels so while the frog suit certainly does make underwater levels much better that doesn't mean the levels using this item reach the peaks of levels using pretty much every other item on this list so while I'm sure many of you all will still disagree I really don't think it makes much sense to consider the frog suits anything more than an extremely mediocre addition 27. the Superstar this will make Mario temporarily Invincible along with giving him a speed boost and the ability to instantly kill any enemy he touches unless you're a mantra there are certainly some decent levels you can make using this thing where you have to run through a spike Maze Before the star's timer runs out for example but other than that the uses for this item are significantly less helpful than the others this does get a pretty good boost for working pretty well in traditional levels though as we'll see later on some items are just way too overpowered to work in standard levels but the timer does help make this fairly balanced oh what am I talking about stars are super useful they're like the main item for refreshing special levels everyone's favorite level type now I'm not sure if this would be controversial or not but I think the big mushroom will take number 26. when collected Mario will become 2x2 tiles big and will be able to break blocks he wasn't able to perform such as hard blocks and question mark blocks he breaks these by landing on top of them from a jump which can lead to some pretty interesting levels where you gradually break the platform under you as you jump around aside from that though there's really not much more to this thing now I do think this is more helpful than the other items he talked about so far the jumping mechanic can lead to some very interesting level Concepts where you have to be careful when and where you jump I just think it isn't quite as helpful as some of the other items coming up 25 the Frozen coin this is when the items start to get a bit more interesting the Frozen coin is an alternate version of the coin which will encase it in ice now the thing that makes this item interesting is that unlike normal ice this can actually be melted by fire attacks not just from Mario either anything remotely related to fire will be able to melt these things which is really neat that essentially allows us to make fire detectors or even some unique types of timers that also makes these helpful for say blocking off part of a level until the player gets something to melt the item with they can also be used as platforms that gradually shrink as more Firebase enemies attack it there are a lot of pretty solid uses for this thing the only reason it's not higher is because I generally find power-ups to be more interesting but this is certainly not bad I do have one small nitpick though I kind of wish Fireballs would bounce off of these like they do and do Super Mario Bros Wii since I think that'd make them a bit more interesting but otherwise this is very solid 24 of the Super Bowl flower this is one of the most unexpected additions to Mario Maker 2. coming from Super Mario Land This is an exclusive alternate form of the fire flower in the Super Mario Bros style the fire flower will dispense Fireballs in front of Mario that will bounce along the ground but the Super Ball flower will have the super balls bounce off any surface this can make it a bit more difficult to use as it can completely miss an enemy by just flying right over it a few advantages though of course it's able to attack from several more angles in the fire flower due to its ability to go upward and off walls additionally it'll also be able to pick up coins and keys along with being able to activate certain items like Pals leading to some more interesting uses that the fireflower can't do the reason that this is lower though is because it is a bit more difficult to use than the nice and simple fire flower especially since you can only have one super ball on the screen at a time but this is certainly a solid item 23 the boomerang flower and 22 the cannon box these are both 3D World exclusive items that will also give Mario a unique projectile in order to defeat enemies the boomerang flower will have Mario toss G I don't know and it will fly forward and return to him after the cannon box will be able to shoot out cannonballs at different speeds depending on how long you hold the fire button for these are both not only able to damage enemies but the boomerangs can also collect items and the cannonballs will cause a mini explosion they're both also able to break bricks that they hit and also activate things like on off switches giving them some pretty solid uses once again these aren't as high as the fire flower due to them being a slight bit more complicated but regardless these are both really solid items that can fit into most level types I do think I slightly prefer the cannon box just because it could be on small Mario which makes it slightly more unique from the fire flower but really these are essentially the same 21 the P balloon this is one of the most unique power-ups of the bunch completely changing Mario's moveset basically it will let him fly for however long he wants to with all of the buttons allowing him to get a boost in any direction the uniqueness of this item acts as both a blessing and a curse on the one hand this allows for levels that would absolutely not be possible without it I think the ninji speed run is a great example of one where you have to fly across a Racecourse the controls are also significantly improved from its original appearance in Super Mario World making levels built around it a lot more fun the downside however is that every single level this is in the level has to be built around it otherwise you could just fly over the entire thing missing all the super well-designed challenges other power-ups and even other flight power-ups work better in more traditional levels due to their limitations the P balloon basically doesn't have any which does make for some cool levels but also makes it generally less useful than the others still this is obviously really good it's just the items tab the elements is very stacked 20. the Bullet Bill mask this lets Mario Zoom across a long horizontal distance though it will run out of fuel after some time additionally if you run into a wall you'll lose the item so you have to fly with care I was really conflicted as to if I wanted to put this above or below the people who I decided on above though because 3D World didn't really have any flight items until the last update I mean Mario world has the Cape Feather clown car and Cloud so I think it was more important to add to pull a bill mask this is still lower than some of the other flight items though because the distance you get off this thing is very long making this another one where you definitely have to build an entire level around it levels using it can be really cool though I've had a lot of fun playing through a song the fuel and no hitting wall limitation also go a long way in making this a much more interesting item it's a shame there's no way to go upwards once you start flying as I think that could make obstacle courses a bit more interesting but this is definitely still very solid 19. the Goomba show in 18 the Goomba stiletto these are essentially the exact same items I could definitely see people disagreeing with them being separate but come on 30 items sounds a lot better than 29. these will both spawn with a Goomba inside of them and once defeated Mario will be able to steal the shoe for himself this lets him walk on previously deadly surfaces like spikes and munchers since this is a writable item Mario will also be able to jump out of them using the shoulder buttons which can definitely help save Mario from a jump that would otherwise kill him now in their default form that's about it but something neat about these two items is that they can be customized first off they can be made big which gives them access to a ground pound move releasing a Shockwave that can kill enemies and Additionally the Stiletto will be able to break blocks like heart blocks and even kill build blasters which is what puts it above the normal cover shoe putting Wings on either of the shoes will allow them to have a bit of a flutter jump the high amount of customization boosted these items a lot along with their fairly simple mechanics now yes this isn't really as unique as like the P balloon for example but it's just very easy to work with for many level types the only thing I'd say holding this back is the fact that you can't place these without the Goomba it's a bit of an annoying restriction so I hope that gets changed to Mario maker 3. 17. fire Yoshi and 16 Yoshi being one of the most iconic Mario characters he was of course going to appear a Mario Maker Mario Maker 2 added the ability to make Yoshi have fire breath which is also pretty interesting the fire breath will be able to defeat enemies and also melt frozen coins the normal Yoshi will just use his tongue which can eat enemies and also pick up and spit out certain items both Yoshi also have the ability to flare jump in their Mario U game style though they just have the normal standard jump in Mario World these guys are once again just very flexible items there are very few levels where you wouldn't be able to throw Yoshi in there but for which is better I personally think it's the normal one fire Yoshi not being able to pick up items is a huge limitation granted his fire breath is much better for dealing with hordes of enemies but the normal Yoshi doesn't really struggle with that much anyway both are definitely very useful though and are great for level centered around them and just for a level where they can act as a simple addition to the player's moveset oh and if this matters to anyone I prefer the Mario World Yoshi over the Mario Yu Yoshi since his tongue can go through walls I just think that's kind of fun 15. the super Hammer these next three items all have the same strengths and weaknesses they're all incredibly unique however they also don't really work well on many level types starting off with the super Hammer this turns you into Builder Mario where you can use that hammer to break blocks and defeat enemies Additionally you can also create up to five crates which can be used to go across lava or get up high Cliffs this is really like nothing else in the game and I think that's great having a more close-up attack with the hammer leads to some interesting levels where you need to get right up close to your enemies to defeat them the crates though are a bit of a problem they are a great way to represent the Builder part of Builder Mario but they're a bit over tuned and working with this item is very difficult as you have to account for five possible blocks anywhere in your level regardless though this is very nice for levels built around it 14. the Super Mario Bros 2 mushroom this will change Mario's moves to his move set from Super Mario Bros 2. no longer will Mario be able to jump on enemies to kill them now he has to pick them up and throw them instead since this is exclusive to the Super Mario Bros game style this is what gives him the ability to pick up items at all there are also a few other smaller things like a large Crouch jump being able to pull up clouds and the ability to pick up snowballs from the ground of the snow theme with how different Mario's moveset is here this allows for radically different levels this also works fairly well in traditional levels as none of this one's abilities are all too overpowered the abilities overall aren't as interesting as stuff coming up though but there's certainly still a lot you can do with this one of their small criticism I have is I wish that once he collected this you wouldn't be able to Lose It by taking damage it's pretty annoying to have to always give the player a refill on power-ups like this so I'd suggest once you pick this up you also obtain the health bar for Mario too which will of course determine when you die other than that this is a very strong item 13. the master sword this is definitely the fan favorite item from Mario Maker 2 and I can certainly see why this transforms Mario into link from The Legend of Zelda series giving him several different weapons Mario will be able to use the Master Sword to attack nearby enemies and even hit certain Blocks he's also able to dash attack and even ground pound next up are the bombs which are able to destroy hard blocks bricks and more is Bo is able to attack bar off enemies and even collect coins finally his shield will defend him from oncoming attacks along with being able to bounce anything that it hits backwards which leads to some very awesome and entertaining levels where you have to slowly push a muncher across a long hallway real real riveting gameplay here but obviously with the move set as big as that this leads to some pretty unique level types to the point where they even added a link tag you can put on your levels combat and puzzle solving and levels using this item are really solid which makes sense considering that's what a lot of the Zelda series is about this does also have the flaw of not working while the levels not built around it but the sheer amount of things you can make based around this makes that problem nearly Irrelevant this is another power up I'd like to see have a health bar is making boss fights with this thing is really difficult due to having to always resupply the player with a new master sword nearly taking away all of its difficulty hopefully they consider doing this for Mario maker 3. alright now we have the three hardest items for me to place on the entire list I will not be surprised if people strongly disagree with these placements but these three items are so important to making levels that I feel like it'd be wrong to place them super low these items are 12 the 1up mushroom 11. the Bitcoin and 10 coins these three items serve the unique purpose of acting as rewards for doing certain challenges whether it just be fighting them taking a more difficult path getting through a section of the level without getting hit and so on additionally the coins act as great ways to direct the player into certain directions or to help them understand what they need to do in a level while yes these three items don't really change a level much mechanically they're just so important from a design standpoint that I feel like it would be wrong to place them in the bottom half of this list honestly at least the coins might even deserve to be higher but I'll settle for this playset secrets are a large part of making levels and are something that I always like to include in mind making me a huge fan of these things plus that's not to say that they're completely deprived of functioning mechanically in a level the one who can turn into the rotten mushroom unique obstacle for the nighttime ground theme coins can be turned into bricks with the p-switch and so on so while I am sure you all disagree with me this is my list I don't care coins made top 10 go cry our next five items are all of the main flight power-ups since they're fairly similar I think it makes sense to cover them all at once and compare them to figure out which is the best these five items are the super Leaf Cape Feather propeller mushrooms super Acorn and propeller box now in my opinion the best flight power-ups will work well in traditional levels while also being complex enough to make levels based around them so first off the Tanuki tail and Cape Feather will have the ability to attack enemies at their side and activate blocks which is a pretty helpful ability to have when you reach full speed they'll both be able to take flight with a super Leaf having a limit and the cape coming down to how well you're able to fly yourself I do like that flying with the cape especially around obstacles takes a good amount of skill however being able to fly endlessly is a bit of a hit since that basically means you could fly over entire levels the cape does also have a ground pound move when he slams it to the ground though so that's pretty cool I guess the propeller suit will give the player a simple burst upward when they hit the shoulder button this is very nice and simple it helps players make jumps across larger gaps and can even take some skill to use however it's not overpowered because he can only do this once before touching the ground a similar thing goes for the propeller box but you get three uses and instead of just the one making this a little stronger than I think it really needs to be both power-ups are also able to drill downwards which essentially acts the exact same as a ground pound but it looks a lot cooler finally the super Acorn lets Mario Glide along with giving him a burst upward similar to the propeller mushroom I like how you lose your speed after using this boost making there a solid amount of strategy as to when to use it this also has the unique traits of having a wall cling and an extra tall spin jump really wish you could still Glide after using the spin jump like you could on new Super Mario Bros U that was really fun to do but with that said what's my ranking for these five well I'm going to be putting the propeller box at 9 for being a bit of an overpowered version of the propeller mushroom had it also been one use it would definitely take the lead here number eight will go to the Tanooki tail while it's not as overpowered as the cave this is much easier to use and also has lost abilities making level centered on this slightly less interesting number seven goes to the cape for being a bit overpowered by having a decent skill Gap to be able to use it effectively plus if you place occasional blocks in the sky then it will completely remove this item's ability to cheese number six goes to the super Acorn for having very smooth movement and number five goes to the propeller mushroom having a perfect balance of not being too overpowered requiring skill to use and overall just being really fun though if the super Acorn had the ability to Glide after a spin jump that would probably take the top flying power-up spot number four the super Bell this is one of the most unique power-ups of the bunch however unlike many of the other unique power-ups this works in pretty much any level type this gives Mario the ability of a cat so basically he's really annoying and a hater he'll be able to scratch enemies to kill them along with being able to break blocks and activate things I especially like doing the Crouch attack which slides him forwards certainly makes brick excavation levels a little bit more bearable Cat Mario also has the ability to climb up walls if he climbs up a standard wall he'll run out of energy after some time but if he climbs up a semi-solid he'll be able to do that forever I really like having the option for both infinite and finite climbing lengths it just leads to some more possibilities finally Mario also has access to a cat dive killing anything in his way and also giving him a huge boost forward pretty much all of these powers are not only exclusive to this item but are also really easy to fit into several different levels this won't make it easy to cheat traditional levels since you'll be stuck near the ground it's great for making fast-paced parkour levels of the combination of climbing and Dives and it can even be pretty helpful for the puzzle levels due to how the scratch can interact with the environment I've seen a lot of people complain about this item over the years but I just never really saw it sure that control changes are a bit annoying but otherwise I think this works great as a general power up for the 3D World style along with being a great centerpiece for levels on its own number three pink coins this is our final item to not be a power up the way this works is very simple when you collect all of the pink ones in a level you'll be rewarded with a key the amount of pink coins in a level can vary from just one to a Max of ten five per sub area this is one of the absolute best items added to the game as this allows for so many different level types my personal favorites are the big pink coin collecting levels essentially you'll be dropped into a level where you have to go through several challenges each rewarding you with a pink coin since Peak coins will save at checkpoints this basically lets you have one large level with several smaller levels contained within it that's not the only usage for this thing though you can also combine all the pink coins into one space so that the player has to collect them all in order to progress or you could even have them placed throughout a level and would lead the player to a secret if they manage to collect them all this is pretty much an essential part of most levels now and is something that only this item can do which is what puts this item at the very least in the top three heck I wouldn't even blame anyone for putting this at number one number two the fire flower of course the most iconic Mario power up had to be high up on the list it's not just here for iconicity though it's legitimately very well designed to fit into almost any situation this simply gives Mario the ability to shoot out Fireballs in front of him damaging enemies and also acting as fire to melt coins and light the bombs while yes this isn't nearly as complicated as some of the others we've mentioned before having just the simple attack makes this work perfectly in nearly every level type it's the best power up for traditional levels and it works great for a level folks to round it due to how Fireball is moving and direct with the environment yeah I know this segment isn't that in depth like the others were but all this needed to be was a simple attacking item and this does that perfectly all right this might be the most controversial number one pick I think I've had for literally any of my list videos I'm probably going to need to explain myself pretty thoroughly for this one but I think the super mushroom is the best item for building levels in the game first off this will make Mario 2 tiles tall giving him the ability to break bricks and giving him an extra hay he can take before dying that's it this is a staple of the series due to its Simplicity and it's also why this is my number one choice while yes this doesn't really make for great level centered around it this works in every and I mean every level type the simple fact that all this does is give Mario an extra Health Point essentially makes this a great item for any challenge wants to make a boss fight slightly easier give the player a mushroom beforehand heck you can even use the brick breaking ability to close off certain areas unless Mario has this power on almost every level in the game can use this effectively which is why I think it's the best item in the game you all can go cry in the comments if you disagree honestly I wouldn't be surprised if I disagreed back when I started but as for me I think the super mushroom is easily the number one best item in Super Mario maker 2. but anyways that's it
