i'm feeling super super comfortable right now cruising around in a range rover i mean like what's good this is rio and today i'm in a range rover and for some of you who may have noticed this is actually not a brand new ranger this is a 2014 range rover hse trim look we're not all kardashians we can't all afford brand new range rovers unless maybe you can write your lease off or you have more money than you know what to do with in which case the obvious choice is a brand new range rover however because some of us are on more modest budgets i guess that kind of begs the question should i or should you buy a used range rover now i'm not here to give some sort of perfect blanket statement that says yes you should no you shouldn't because that's you know silly but range rovers get a really bad rep they have notoriously bad reliability issues so i wanted to look at it from a kind of holistic perspective this happens to be one of my really good friends cars so i've seen this car go from around nine ten thousand miles to what it sits at today which is like 51 000 miles so i've kind of been around this car a little bit and i think i can give some insight to some people who are wondering whether a used range rover is a really nice value proposition or if it's a really big mistake or let's say a ton of money waiting to be wasted so the most important thing to address is cost now this car in 2014 cost about 97 000 brand new and uh although there have been some significant changes which we will get into in a moment a 2021 ranger much like this exact car is also going to run you right around 98 99 thousand dollars now the issue with range rovers are they notoriously depreciate very rapidly so if you were to buy a brand new one for right about a hundred thousand dollars you're probably going to see that car losing easily around fifteen twenty thousand 000 in just the first year by buying a used car even just a couple years old you're kind of already avoiding that initial hit but unfortunately even around let's say 75 80 000 these are going to still continue to tank further and further down towards around that forty to fifty thousand dollar range once they're three or four years old so you look at it with that perspective again maybe this excludes those who are leasing or at least those who maybe can write off their lease who don't care but for those who are buying or for those who are considering buying a used car the question again is is this going to be a reliable vehicle moving forward whether it's only for just a couple years or for more than that now i'm proud to say that this particular car as i knock on all the wood that's in here very little issues there's always going to be the basic stuff like brakes occasional maintenance and some wear and tear stuff but considering the rep range rovers have for being terrible when it comes to reliability my friend once again knock on wood it's been pretty lucky i want to take a step back and discuss what you'll be getting for your money if you're buying a full-size range rover depending on the year you buy it so if you buy a 2013 through 2017 that's the pre-face lifted range rover just like this car and 18 through now 21 is the facelift and i believe for 2022 son about a year or so they're gonna i think unveil full redesign of this full-size range rover so that's another reason to maybe be a little wary of buying a 21 model or 20 model now because in just about 12 to 18 months there's going to be an all-new version on the road that's going to definitely aid in the appreciation process of the car you buy now this is a supercharged v6 producing 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque i want to discuss what you get for your money for that 40 45 grand that you pay for one of these these days depending on the mileage of course but effectively around 40 45 grand of these costs what do you get well you're gonna have to wait because i want to do the tall boy test it wouldn't be a rio knees video without the tall boy test we'll get it out on the road and then we'll discuss what you get for your money and what could potentially go wrong if you buy one of these so here is the tall boy test [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so i'm feeling super super comfortable right now cruising around in a range rover i mean look this thing oozes class luxury comfort all that but let's get into what you really do get tangibly when you buy a range rover you get a ton of leather leather wrap dash even the lower dashes leather up here on the on the upper door trim leather beautiful leather wrapped steering wheel with a lot of wood in fact you have wood all throughout the cabin so the car feels definitely a notch above even the most regular luxury suvs the bmw x5s and the audi q7s and mercedes gles this definitely feels a cut above that as it is now when you're comparing it to what you can buy brand new for this this segment which is cars like the ford explorer the honda pilot maybe a telluride when you look at those cars obviously none of them are going to compare to this car when it comes to luxury what they're also not going to be able to keep up with is the brand and the look of this car so i mean look when you pull up in this car everyone knows you're in a range rover in fact these preface the range rovers look pretty darn similar to the facelift and especially going forward into the all-new redesign that will probably come out again in like 10 to 12 months these will really begin to kind of mesh with the facelift variants if you really want to be picky you could probably even swap out the headlights and tail lights and make it look like the facelifted car at least on the exterior for the most part i wouldn't particularly suggest that but my point is that this looks kind of like a brand new range rover would even though it's six years old you still get a digital dash in this car you still get a touch screen now i will admit that both are a little bit rudimentary in nature and uh cars of late have definitely begun to improve these exact features but you still get them you still hop in this car and feel like you're in 2020 you don't feel like you're living in the past you get soft closed doors in this car you get a lovely meridian speaker system in this car that makes listening to digital dash by a draken future while looking at digital dash very pleasurable experience and uh my friend has actually elected to black this car out i think he may have gotten it kind of blacked out when bunny bought it but the headlights are blacked out the taillights are blacked out it's been de-badged the wheels are blacked out so these are actually the 20-inch wheels i should mention these are actually a 20-inch wheels i believe 18's or 19s are standard which are way too small even these are a little bit small because when you get the 20s like this they're uh they come i think they're eight and a half inches wide sitting on 255 um rubber when you get the 21s and 22s they come with 285s i believe and they're either nine or nine and a half inch wide wheels and they kind of stance the crowd a bit better when you get those both larger but also wider wheels i'm a little picky when it comes to that stuff but i think that that would make a bit of a difference in the overall kind of width and and stance that this car has aside from that you get that flat bonnet range rover vibe and comfortable ride now that means this car is definitely very far from sporty and i would tell somebody who wanted a sportier car in fact to look at maybe an x5 or a cayenne and go that route this is definitely the affordable rolls-royce of the suv world and affordable because it's used not because it's new because these new can easily be 200 000 when they're the highest spec highest trim levels but that kind of gives you a taste of what i mean this is a car that brand new in its highest trim with a more powerful engine and more luxurious materials and longer wheelbase can easily touch 200 000 and the fact that you can get a card that's about 70 percent 65 percent the same car but for only maybe 25 of the money it actually is a good value proposition but that brings us to the most important question of the video the reason you probably click this video which is reliability so even though the owner of this particular car has been lucky to have very little reliability issues this video wouldn't be complete without mentioning what can potentially go wrong if you're looking at buying a 50 000 ish mile 40 45 000 use range rover even a slightly newer slightly more expensive range over these same issues can still occur so one very common issue is while this car has delightful air suspension that can in fact lower and raise itself depending on conditions you can have an air suspension failure and that failure can easily run around a thousand to thirteen fourteen hundred dollars per corner so you're looking at almost five grand six grand for all four corners hopefully you want a failure in all four corners but the point is a single failure on one individual corner can easily run you up over a thousand dollar bill as i mentioned this card does have soft closed doors which are super lovely to deal with but unfortunately they can have the motor can break and that actually has happened to one of the doors on this car and that can easily run you around 200 per door so yeah he has had the motor fail he got it fixed it wasn't a big deal but another thing to keep in mind and something that you don't have to deal with with a more basic vehicle it doesn't have soft closed doors i know this kind of fits under general wear and tear but it's important to consider these cars weigh around 5000 pounds if not more depending on the v8 motor or the longer wheelbase and with that considered you are going to run through pads pretty quickly uh even rotors actually a little quicker than your typical vehicle will something to keep in mind is if you're buying and use one of these there's a chance that somebody is purposely trying to offload it once it's getting to the point where things like the brakes are due so uh definitely something to keep in mind if you're planning to buy one maybe find one that has had the brakes done more recently or has lower miles or try to inspect the brakes because that will cost you easily several thousand dollars to replace both pads and rotors on all four corners but i think that range rovers still get a really really bad rep and it's kind of unjustified i think when you factor in things like getting massage seats heated and cooled seats getting all the luxury features the air suspension the comfortable ride but most importantly the feeling you get in this car like i feel a little bit special driving this car because i fit in with the la crowd i'm in a range rover and even though it happens look at this a range rover right in front of me arranged for right behind me right now you can't make this stuff up it's just hard to deny that even while being a little bit more affordable and a little older this car still just happens to fit in in a way that certain other cars can't i'll definitely tell you that a 2014 x5 will not fit in the way that this fits in and again when you factor in the luxury the leather and all the amenities the secret compartment over here in the dash the secret compartment over here in the doors the decent leg room the large trunk it really is a pleasant place to be you'll really enjoy being in one of these cars i would just remember that there will be certain things that will go wrong undeniably things will go wrong try to find the best example that you can but don't be immediately deterred by the fact or the reputation i should say that range rovers are unreliable because honestly they're not too bad i thoroughly enjoy driving this whenever i get the chance and with all that said i genuinely appreciate you guys for watching remember to like comment and subscribe to mac in for more as always this is rio peace
