[Music] [Music] this is the actor George Randolph Scott Randi as he was called by his family and friends was born January the 23rd 1898 while his parents were visiting family on a trip to Orange County Virginia now after and his birth his parents George Grant and Lucy crane Scott returned to Charlotte North Carolina where they'll raised their six children Margaret Randi Kathleen Virginia Joseph and Barbara I like most of his fellow actors who was raised in struggling families Randolph Scott was the exception his father was an administrative engineer in a textile firm and his mother Lucille was a member of a wealthy North Carolina family the family's financial status allowed the Scott children to attend private schools Randolph attended would be forced a prestigious all-male school that emphasized a strict honor code located it would be a farce Virginia while attended would be Randy excelled in sports especially football in 1917 when Scott was 19 the United States entered the war in Europe searching for adventure and patriotic Randolph enlisted in the army he was quickly sent to France or he'll see action as an artillery observer with the 19th field artillery regiment as a member of a two men observer team operating behind enemy lines Scott was often in danger of sniper fire and being captured after the war in 1919 God returned to the States and enrolled at Georgia Tech hoping to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming an all-american football player it's believed that Scott is third from the left standing in this 1919 Georgia Tech photo unfortunately shortly after this photo was taken he received a football injury that terminated his dream of a football career Randy transfer to University of North Carolina fallin in his father's footsteps of trying to obtain an engineering degree he'll end up working as a bookkeeper and accounted for his father it is believed that Randy's parents had this house built at 1301 Dilworth Road in Charlotte sometime around 1926 he'll return here to see his parents and siblings many times even after he becomes a major star by 1928 Randy had decided that he was interested in becoming an actor and he persuaded his father to write a letter of introduction to his father's acquaintance movie producer and multi-millionaire Howard Hughes with letter in hand Scott leaves Charlotte for Los Angeles as he had hoped Hugh's got Randolph an unaccredited part in a romantic comedy that starred Georgia brand called sharpshooters soon Randy began calling himself Randolph Scott leaving off his first name George and for the next few years it'll be unaccredited bit parts in films such as The Virginian with Gary Cooper it's been said that Scott hep Cooper learned to speak as a southerner for this film on advice from director Cecil B DeMille Randolph enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse for actors and while there paramount scouts saw him in a play and offered him a contract as a contract player by 1932 paramount offered Scott his first lead role in heritage of the desert was sadly blamed it helped established him as a leading Western hero it'll be directed by first-time director Henry Hathaway that same year Randolph Scott will star with first-time lead actor Cary Grant their love interest will be actress Nancy Carol in hot saturday for Paramount Pictures Scott and grant will be instant friends their friendship will last a lifetime after meeting on the set of hot Saturday the two co-stars Scott and grant quickly move in together they will rent the Santa Monica beach house and later on this la mansion located at 2177 West live-oaks Drive although rumors were spread about the two actors living arrangements they treat to gossip as a joke and in some cases even encourage it the studios begin calling their place bachelor hall with other stars visiting such as John Wayne Gary Cooper and even the writer Ernest Hemingway there will be numerous women in and out of the house some say that the studio was behind the parade of women in order to squelch any rumors the next year in 1933 paramount did a remake of a silent film the Thunder and hurt that starred Jack haut Scott's hair was dyed for the part and he wore mustache to look more like a silent star has been said after living together for two years at Bachelor Hall Paramount Studios ordered Cary Grant to marry actress Virginia Cheryl they will divorce some 13 months later and Carrie will move back to Bachelor Hall two years later in 1935 Randolph was star with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Roberta where Scott was able to live out his dream finally as a football star dear and Randolph Scott's life heel held three close friends Cary Grant Fred Astaire and the Reverend Billy Graham 1936 was a busy year for Randolph Scott on March the 4th his father George will collapse on a Riley in North Carolina street corner from a heart attack he was 66 years old Randolph will rush home to Charlotte for the funeral mr. Scott will be buried at the Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte two months later in May Randolph will marry Marion DuPont Summerville a member of the wealthy DuPont family Marion had been married to Thomas Somerville for 10 years and had divorced a year earlier in 1935 they had no children ironically Randolph had served his best man at their wedding also in 1936 Scott will act in two major motion pictures follow the fleet again with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers next he'll play Hawkeye in the last of the Mohicans for independent producer Edward small and 1938 Scott will be lent out the twentieth Century Fox to star with child actress Shirley Temple in Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm the next year 1939 Randolph Scott and Miran DuPont Somerville well divorced after almost three years of marriage they'll have no children all Scott would say of his marriage to Marion was it is a case of being separated too much for too long which is not compatible with marriage Marion over the years will continue her charity work and our love for horse-racing she will live until September the 4th 1983 and will pass away at the age of 88 without ever remained that same year in 1939 after his divorce from Marion Randolph will appear in his first colored film Jesse James with Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda in 1940 Scott will star alongside Earl Flynn and mahram Hopkins in Virginia City for Warner Brothers director Michael Kurtz said that there was conflicts between actors and producers on the film but that Randolph Scott was the only one that acted like a gentleman and said he's the only one that meant so far and this business at the end of 1941 the United States entered World War two Scott tried to enlist as he had served in World War one but he was turned down from his old football injury but he began making patriotic movies to support the cause such as to the shores of Tripoli in 1942 and gung ho in 1943 on the 3rd of March 1944 Randolph Scott will marry actress Patricia Stillman they'll be married by Justice of Peace at Riverside California Randolph was 44 and Patricia was 23 it will be Patricia's only marriage and they will remain married for 43 years until Randolph's death in 1987 during the course of their marriage the couple will adopt two children a son Christopher and a daughter Sandra in 1945 it'll be bales of the Yukon with Gypsy Rose Lee and badman Territory in 1946 with Ian Richards by this time Scott had decided that he only wanted to make westerns over his career he will appear in over a hundred films with 60 of them being westerns for years he will ride his favorite horse a blond sorrel by the name of Stardust he said he loved westerns for the next 10 years Randolph Scott will star in numerous westerns from the deulim's of Oklahoma in 1944 the man in the saddle 1951 Carson City 1952 seven men from now 1956 ride lonesome 1959 and Comanche station in 1960 also in 1960 Randolph Scott will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that's located at 62 43 Hollywood Boulevard in 1962 Scott will star in a Sam Peckinpah film along with Joel McCrea Mariette Hartley and James Drury in his last film I ride the high country some say one of the best westerns ever made both Scott and McCray will say that they will quit movies after finishing this film although Joel McCrea will return later Randolph Scott won't he said movie Acton no longer enters Tim Scott will retire from films and the limelight and never looked back he'll spend his time with family and friends and on the golf course he'll retire and multi-millionaire he will protect and shield his family from the press and Hollywood his early retirement at the age of 64 showed that he could leave the make-believe world of Hollywood even after being one of the top leading men of his generation everyone agreed that Randolph Scott's nature was exactly as depicted on screen a Southern gentleman in 1975 Scott will be inducted into the Western performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City if spello western actor Joel McCrea had been inducted in 1969 on March the 2nd 1987 after 25 years of retirement Randolph Scott will pass away in his sleep at 6 a.m. at his Bel Air home in Los Angeles he had been suffering from heart and lung troubles for several years and being hospitalized from time to time but complications of pneumonia he'll be buried at the Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte only four blocks from the location of his boyhood home his close friend Billy Graham will deliver the graveside eulogy for our only a few family members and close friends God had suffered from the loss of his lifelong friend Cary Grant only three months earlier it's been said that when he heard of Cary Grant's death he placed his head in his hands and cried George Randolph Scott was 89 years old 17 years after her husband's death on May the 3rd 2004 Patricia Marie Stillman Scott musers Randolph Scott will pass away in Los Angeles at the age of 85 she'll be buried next to her husband [Music]
