[Music] is the founder of the internationally known lifestyle fitness apparel brand lipid and used to be a personal trainer before that he made t-shirts and designs in college we're going to Long Beach so how did you first get involved in the clothing industry before college and before fitness and all that stuff I was involved in the clothing industry I'd a group skateboarding and I played in hardcore bands I played drums in the band and all that stuff like skating playing the band doing the kind of stuff you know clothing was a huge influence in our culture like while we were playing in bands we had to sell merchandise so with that we had to make our own t-shirts we had to go you know do that type of business to get merchants sell to our fans and customers you know and with skate wear and work with the street culture escape culture I wanted to start a skate brand as well when I was young and so the same process with like the whole band you had to go make shirts here and there you didn't think of it like a business at first yeah you know you just wanted to create something and rock it with your friends you know and obviously the stuff cost money so you had to charge your friends you know so it was like you're subconsciously doing business so now a lot of smaller scale so that was my whole thing before I got into the whole fitness and all that you know the clothing thing I had ton of experience doing it growing up and I think in the high school yet I took one graphic design class in high school and in that class I learned how to silkscreen actually burn the screen put a motion on the screen and you know use the Lightroom in and do the whole process so yeah so you've been like designing shirts and making them through silkscreen for a while and then you got into fitness and you're like why not start a fitness line kind of like that yeah yeah so like I said all the other stuff prior or I got a fitness like the whole clothing experience retail side I've that for I want to say seven years before I even got into fitness and then when I got into fitness you know some of the or the brands I had prior didn't do well or they didn't pop off or I just stopped doing it so you know when I got to fitness you obviously getting paid you're professional now you have to start charging for your services and with that you're becoming a brand already so becoming a brand you want your clients to wear your merchandise - right so I made a couple you know t-shirt designs and started having my clients wear it and it just evolved from there from my clients weren't my t-shirts - for the mouth to the local community at first and then ultimately using social media do that screen pruning and then you kept like clipping onto yet enough to work with manufacturers how did you like brand yourself locally because that's how you started before social media right yeah yeah so that like I said a lot of the stuff came organically and I think that's like a really important part in a really important aspect of I think why I became successful is because of the organic growth locally first without social media and yet the three hundred bucks that a lot of people find it unbelievable they don't believe it actually but you know when you think about it one on personal training I had that money I saved a 300 bucks cash 300 bucks can get you a batch of shirts for like you know 40 50 shirts for 250 shirts times 20 bucks you know you XML you're just snowballing that because I can live off my personal training money this slide money you know it's like 300 bucks you can go buy a you know some clothes or you can choose to invest in start-up business I chose this and it just snowballed that thousand dollars I may put it back into the initial investment and then 36 shirts became a hundred shares 100 shirts became a thousand shares and it just snowballed into this thing years later you know so okay what do you think like drew people to brand was it the design was it branding you did on it or how did why do you think people bought from you as a is to just by other people sure at first it was I felt they obviously my clients wanted to buy it because they wanted to feel like they were part of something and that was one thing I pushed with my personal training business a lot of is a lot of camaraderie you know we're doing this together you know your fitness journey isn't just by yourself you have all these people working together we have support because it's not an easy thing you know you want support from other people you know - if there's a strict routine you have to follow through so you need accountability you know and what I've built in my RP Fitness microfilter in business and that culture is that camaraderie style you know so when I had these t-shirts it was just the first Logan says list it you know but on the back is hit team RP so what the team RP that was kind of like hey I'm part of this team you know when I wear this people going to know that I workout you know I'm with this squad is you know we marketing like that so I think the whole camaraderie things first it's hide a lot of people in and just wanted to be a part of something you know it was like a movement kind of a jewel they're part of something bigger yeah yeah it was pulling it and every time we worked out it was fun everyone was having fun I made sure like I had that what do you call it enthusiasm on like just going all in and made sure my clients you know give it at all you know so it was cool and so you branded lit fit not just as a laptop in his brand locally but on through social media internationally as a brand so how did you first go about like branding yourself on social media I've only leveraged Facebook at first an Instagram was only available for Apple I believe in I didn't have Apple the combos weren't enough or using a blackberry so I didn't have access to Instagram so I was just full on Facebook it was all word of mouth like we record videos took pictures of like transformations and stuff and other clients and word-of-mouth or friends of clients started seeing that and once Instagram popped off and was available for Android I mean I already threw away my blackberry at Poly like years later and went on an iPhone and committed to get Instagram I look really big on it first and then once I started posting on it with my clients and my clients were not sure and stuff like that people started attracting to it more just like I said more word-of-mouth and it was just a lot better at the time I think it was something new besides Facebook it's basically was getting old at the time you know even though it's still a strong social media pool today but once you see something new everyone can see hey what's this thing you know what do you know the next social media thing and this was it Instagram so I leveraged that and made an RP Fitness page was just dedicated myself in personal training in my clients yes now it's like so saturated but you're like one of the first to do those transformation pictures and like brand yourself on social media right yeah I mean I couldn't keep record that that was the first but I just focus on doing that and it you know it became what it is today so when did you see like the like return on investment or like when did you see that you know I could leverage this to for my business because they're probably people all over the world just following you so how did how did you they leverage that yeah good point so with like I said was Instagram and the whole social media when I posted my shirts and my clients wearing them and that whole thing I had an online store ready just in case people wanted to buy and I was getting orders trickling in you know not not huge orders but they were there and they kept increasing as more followers I got as a I started branding it more and it just naturally I just got a I got orders from not just not within my city but out of state and then it was out of the country and in ocean it just spread and you know like crazy with Instagram or social media so I think over time I had to decide like hey depend the the amount of time of meat packing orders and doing all this stuff and managing it like a brand which I had prior experience to was like hey I need it first I need to get rid of school because this wasn't helping me at all college was just holding me back I couldn't train I couldn't design I wasn't learning anything so drop the whole College thing and then I was like focused on personal training and doing list and I had a teacher shop I invested in that in the beginning it was a lot of stuff I did but all the other stuff like the t-shirt store and personal training required my time so I had to leverage out when I'm sleeping I'm getting orders on my online store so that money eventually obviously over time in more marketing stuff that money came just it was for passing my personal training money yeah income okay so I was like I it was a point where I was just spreading things too thin I'm like hey I got a naked or break it so I just committed to doing the brand 110% and then yeah gave my clients off to my buddies that works for me at the time actually my hair journey to fit an event where in the shirt but yeah so yeah well how did you like why do you think people what would true them to your brand because you know people can just put up their shirts and all that but there's a way that you market it on social that people thought you know this is cool I want to be a part of it how did you create that so versus or me versus or a person just investing money and putting it up there without doing any kind of footwork at first the difference is I believe it's because when I first started I came from something this is there's a story behind this brand you know and the story was that I was a personal trainer I came from skateboarding and it was already something there that it wasn't supposed to be a clothing brand right it was a camaraderie personal training team it was just a group of people working out you know it was a personal training brand locally you know and I added with the design that I did Street words Stiles get culture style to style that stuff I would wear you know so then that caught on and that already separated me from just a person with I don't want to say unknown name but you know when I push this first I pushed it as the RP Fitness lipid brand first you know so it gained traction traction there and I was competing at the time to throw it in there I was doing men's physique so I was making a name for myself you so every time I was getting notoriety ours were enlisted so it was always associated with limpid I was building it you know with with it on my back you know and then later obviously I put on more athletes and stuff but let them you know start pushing it with social media then it became you know what it is today yeah so about like influences how did you get other influencers and people to get on board with your brand and what did you look for when you're looking for courses at first it was easy you know because there was only a select few I mean hundred people would have select you that that I found on social media it was easy to contact them at the time you know back then there wasn't a lot of brands out there for clothing brands in this niche industry when I'm talking bodybuilding Smith physique and fitness stuff you know so it would be easy for me to reach out to them and say hey you know I have this brand I would like you guys to represent it what do you guys think and it wasn't just like a yes or no if they said yes I would have to make sure they really like this brand really believe in the brand because I don't want people representing my stuff just you know just represent they have to have to feel that it's organic like this guy really truly believes in lifted apparel you know and that's how you get people to find you your products because we actually believe in this you know so there's people that will get sponsor about any company you know and I don't want those type of people you want people that are going to pick you like alright this is the true fit you know so they have to look they have the style and everything that we represent at first so once you find that mesh then it's a green light you just do a test run here and there boom and then they grow if we grow then we take care of each other now so I remember one of your youtube videos you said you also look for chemistry right how they work with your team because it doesn't matter they're skilled talents or following or even their look really matters how they mesh with your team so what are some treats you look for you know they have to be on branch of coordinates of others yeah so the chemistry is huge and especially now that I've grown a brand and actually have employees you don't just have to get along with me you have to get along with my employees you have to get along with my videographer my photographer my designer my staff my warehouse guys because when they come in here you know everyone's got to feel on the same page and that's what I like to build here like the company culture so when I you know this person might have obviously a great following great looks great style and might fit but maybe he's a it's just very hard to work with you know and that's when we're like hey you know we have to draw a line somewhere like it's just really healthy for the company you know because if you get one bad blood in here it's kind of like a virus don't spread out you know so that's what we take in to consideration you know all the time and does the chemistry you know that it goes for you know like I'll get abused or whatever with just semi looks and whatever following but if he has good chemistry and get along with it with all of us hey men get on board because I believe if we all agree on and if we all agree on one thing in our on the same page we can go a lot further than you know being with someone that obviously got a good bond whatever but we're just always bumping heads yeah you know that's more of a long-term relationship you're trying to grow long-term relationships healthy and just being you're just waking up every day knowing that okay qualm want to work with more people it's just a lot easier on your mind you have less stress less stress yeah so what so that's like one of the I guess effective ways to you grew and marketed your bread is there any other ways that's an effective way to grow and market your friend on social media yeah so like I tell all my athletes and myself that I just post about the other day everything we do all social media now is branding for yourself you know like everything I do and what I post that's my personal brand and whatever my personal brand or whatever people see is associated with everything I do list it whatever companies like what brands I wear to the watch everything people that kind of stuff as they're always going to ask what do you wearing what are you eating you know so obviously with social media people whether they like it or not they are their own brand you know so that was a way I didn't seal to my athletes like saying you know this is your representative listed you know and that's that's one thing you know you have to really do it in the brand cuz if you really believe in the brand you it's going to be out there anyways no matter if they're out working out eating dinner having fun at the beach or something are going to have something lip it on because they truly believe in the brand you know so that's one aspect of that and then another one is obviously leverage social media and then obviously the other technical marketing tactics like email marketing and just stuff like that you know the general stuff is there anything you would do like differently if you could go back and market yourself again on social media or well like how would you go about if you could redo it from from a zero followers yeah yeah that's a good good question I actually I probably wouldn't do anything different because when I remember when I grew the company I didn't really I never expanded on people where I see a lot of brand just kind of like do sponsored ads and just spam it even on Facebook I never really believed in that I wanted the branches grow by word-of-mouth you know maybe like 80% word-of-mouth and the rest I'll do some marketing close enough cool pictures and you know do marketing with solo models and stuff like that I want to do that not athletes but just models and people that I think would be a good fit but you know we just do a contracted work to get it out that way but mostly it's all organic that's probably the best way to because they just believe in it and so other people would not true always yeah the best way is obviously yeah organic when you have organic following you're creating a movement it's more than just a brand now you know you get to a point where everything is just branded lbst you know like now we have obviously likeness plate frames we got like stickers backpacks just everything you know pretty much a whole lifestyle movement you know that would create it no and just talked about how in the design grew up on welfare and yet and a single mother and all that were then you like pivotal like moments or hardships in your life that shaped your driving like who you are today yeah I get that asked a lot to like what driving it and you know for me growing up poorest like I didn't know any better you know I didn't have an option to her like you know I'm just going to give up and sit back like I couldn't do that ever since I was young like I was you know on the street skating and just like my mom going to work all day I had to kind of fend for myself you know she gave me like what two bucks a day just go buy some food this is your kids your bills at sixteen right yeah I'm your pigeon or sixteen yes had my first job at 16 and are still in high school macros done high school would go to work and you know make ends meet so that would help I had to help my mom pay for rent and put food on the table too so yeah like hardship stuff like that I was so used to you know I wasn't afraid to lose anything because I didn't have to lose you know and I learned a lot growing up on the streets it's like you see a lot of things around you in your life talk to you I don't want to stay in this bubble and if I don't do I'm going to sustain it so it's like you're constantly seeing all these things when you're at such a young age oh and you don't do this you know like it you watch movies and you watch TV you're like I want to have that I know you know watch them you wanna yeah I want to be that you know this has boys like cars in the house like dude I want to have that tuna so is there like a story about you Randall that maybe not many people know about that's been critical in like shaping who you are today story out awesome Ana has a lot of story whatever like comes to your mind I don't unread even now like when you're young or maybe you're like you saw this one the prisoner you saw you know you had this one talk that change your mindset or you're like I really need to do this theory and now I'm try to think right now I mean I met a lot of great people along the way but I didn't really have like a mentor anything like that you know I mean one person I did listen to a lot with Nicky hustles the artist and okay this is this is a good one so one of his bursts in his song it was mama said boy you were full stay in school last month I made more than every teacher of my school so with that lyric I was like that instilled in me outside okay we got that romping you know it was actually because all these professors around me teaching me this nonsense that wasn't not nonsense but I'm never going to use in my life I want to talk to you I'm already making way more than they're making you know I'm just like I'm not trying to concede it but I'm putting two and two together you know yes so Nicky also said that he's already making doctor money and like that and I'm like your dumb part of doing this sittin in school you know with students that are trying to make it but have no idea I'm just I didn't feel I was in the same level as them you know so with that lyrics doesn't that really hit home you know and I was like you that tells me it maybe I was like I'm dropping out and now is the best institution I made you know yeah and I don't encourage people to drop out but I encourage people to understand what school is it's obviously a business and if it's not right for you if you don't feel that's doing anything for you think it the out you already have something good good for you you know that's right yeah you talk a lot about how you don't need to go to school to be successful but what do you think people do need to be successful with what are some of the key points yeah do the sheen which you need a good personality you need how to socialize and you just need good work ethic you know it comes down to that it's a lot of easy easy things a lot what school teaches you are tasks doing things you know to just think right here and do what you need to do is then go home you know they don't teach you to really critically say anything bill yeah think of think how to think of yourself problem-solve real situations and so that's one thing right to to learn how to do that via okay we'll think your incest but have a cool personality I've seen this so much around where people are just they have the right mindset they have the ambitions they have the capability and the smart you know to do a lot of these these things but their personality just sucks so that people that are to hire are wanting to hire them my life socket I can't stand you so you can go kick rocks I'll find another person a lot of people to understand and I'll put this a hard way people are replaceable you know and owners of companies people that actually create jobs they want to be around people they can stand they want to be around people are like and we're just cool you know like fun and it's guys chill like you know I'm gonna hire you just because of that and just from you don't have to be the smartest person but if you know a little bit about what you're doing not a little bit but enough then we can work together and go a lot further you know so personality is key yeah that's it and then people that just understand their lane and just I don't know it has to come come down to the being of the person a characteristic you know a tional and yeah social to that depends on what job like it if I want to hire like a wholesale do that salesperson stuff or customer service I don't care how smart the area I just want to I want them to be able to instill to the customer like you know like if we made a mistake that I'm so sorry you know like this is not us you know like they're a good representation representation of the brand they can speak well for us you know and it has nothing to do with how smart you are what you know it's all how how they are kind and how to interact with people and also yeah and you said you knew that your business brand would succeed if they gave is tattoos your your head lifted oh and for it kind of blew up like crazy and did you have a like a do-or-die mindset like what made you tattoo your hand how are you so confident that you succeed when there's you know all the competitors other humans clothing industry yeah I got lbft data right here and at this point in my head like I put tattoos on me not because it's like I'm going to be it forever or whatever because that is on me if I tattoo something hits it's because it's a guy it was a big moment in my life you know even because I have old straight tattoos I'm not sure anymore but it was a big part of my life so I'm not going to expose things out you know I'm saying but with this like even sell or not sell I new list it was a big part of me you know even if I don't have it in ten years or 15 years like that was a good time my life that I spent I had good memories with good people like you know so it's kind of like that just like a nut like to remember yeah to remember yeah exactly you know so also while you're still doing it now so it's good yeah and you said you're like the face of limpid and you didn't want that to happen necessarily but but it did and what's that good for your social media or and you just in a roll with it do you think people fall in love it's partly because of you and how does that obviously oh yeah now we have enough data to try and track things you know at first obviously I was the face of RP fitness was my personal training friend right but when I decided just like to say hey I'm on a brand new thing we don't get officer for skateboarders fitness people how long I started stepping back behind the curtain and putting my foot soldiers in the front you know a lot of marketers the new faces you know but at the same time obviously this was growing my personal brand was growing too just because of social media people kind of follow what I did so obviously kept that in the back of my head and all but really you know everything I did I wore with it too so it I've seen it on social media and I'm pretty sure you seen it too now like with Instagram pages and things like that brands have pretty good engagement but people themselves always have way better engagement you know this is real you know you're a person with all of the people like you said move people so that yeah exactly people things are more relatable you know you know and I try to instill that into the brand too that's why we show behind the scenes stuff that's why we show videos of you know our athletes speaking and the stores them what they're doing behind the scenes so people can interact with that too instead of just doing products and you know regular campaign do you think businesses need to do in poster marching no because uh there's a lot more explosives like social media and stuff like that but you know in the past businesses we just advertise on like billboards or add of TV done so we just anymore in yes but like what do you think is the best way to market yourself what does a clothing brand yes in general um so yeah we live in a new age day you know billboard stuff television stuff doesn't work as much you know I find it this way billboards televisions so it kind of big ads that's more for status like when we had a billboard on Second Street that was just because of stats I didn't care who looked at it or whatnot it wasn't for marketing all when I get new games from this no it was for me to be like damn you know I did it up there I think social influencers are the way to go you know because underground people to people that are more relatable that's how people get discovered on Instagram to you know just new faces pop up and you know the market huge so yeah I mean I encourage especially small brands to go with people with organic following not necessarily celebrities you know I seen brand put so many so much money towards having like a famous rapper where their stuff or a famous entertainer and it just Falls to cuz no one gives it finish it you know it's not real anymore now there's a you're like one I do it once or whatever like yeah like I don't give a of this fringe person words or stuff yeah that's cool you know but you want to keep it like like real in a manic you know you want us to believe in your brand yeah okay exactly then we go to get anything so yeah so do you have you I guess grown influences do you something you you do or branch should do you know in the future or stuff like that the way we did it obviously we use enlargement stuff but it's a tight niche of influencers influencers / athlete you know I could have sponsored 20 to 25 people but no we only have seven to eight athletes at a time and like for ambassadors and that's it you know we just spread our marketing through those guys you know and that's it and that keeps it more exclusive um more rare you know so yeah that's kind of like a branding technique that I use personally you know you know I don't want to force-feed it and have everybody brought it you know yeah you just want to keep in your nice group of people and make it seem like a solid team keep it tight keep it tight yeah yeah I see oh they're like no fitness industry they just you know have like so many ambassadors it's just sort of spread out yeah I mean I have nothing against that it's just not my way of branding as I would you know call that to organic gain up yeah so I guess how do you create that type culture because I'm sure people want to but they don't have the personality or they don't know how to create that you know I feel like you treat your team like a family and you don't just see them as you work for me you work like with me together so is there something you could like advise people on yeah yeah that has to hurt was the owner so that has to start with me you know when I hire I have to have to be really picky about who I hire I have to pick and choose you know and then sometimes you don't know how really person is until six months online here's like a shock okay the truth is coming out kind of like let me have a roommate so you know like even today I think right now we have like the tightest niche group of people but you know don't get me wrong just throughout these four years we had a lesson people go we know we had to have some rough tops and you know but it takes time so for all those out there like hey you know I'm not sure if I'm hiring this person has been like three years I still if you like it time to get that tight tight unit with the people you know to work with a lot of time a lot of investment and not investment every day are in all that you do is which is waiting that everyone kind of you know take care everybody helps yeah and I think what's cool values you actually invent the time a lot of people they just want to in outsource or hire people and just let them do this thing and you know make money but you actually active reach one of your team members issues yeah I've seen people hire like photographer or videographer they'll hire them but they don't check on their work in the beginning so when they get something back so like all this is awful you know you suck you know I don't want blah blah like no then be with that person help them out let them know what you want you know and and get the end result with them you know because it's like they can't read your brain you know so with us I spend hours with our girl state desperate hours with m'god spend hours with Alex our graphic designer you know even to like warehouse before all the logistics became set in stone I spend time with these guys and my figured things out with them you know and but it's good as an owner to you because then now you you know how the whole operation works you know you're not just like blind to it like oh what are they doing yeah what are they doing on table if this guy's like you know taking a bench me and not yeah you know and everyone has their own like style so you have to kind of make sure they understood how you want exactly yeah that was kind of hard for me at first you know with the warehouse logistics I had to stand back on all right cool you know you don't have to do in one way but if the end result is the same and everyone's happy then alright let's do it you know so then you have like four different brands you have give it lift it you have the top threads and Club okay you have like a lot and watch of what is going on out so you know how do you juggle everything I know you're always doing something like as an entrepreneur but how would you like focus your time or is any things you do for that um with these plans because they're so different I want to say it's easier you know what list it obviously it's like more Fitness active skate boarding surfing styles with top threads it's more of like cleaner street wear type of style you know so it easier to separate like it's not really cloudy in my head but so when I design things is kind of like it's just easy to separate I don't know part of zoo I do it even juggle we spend X amount of time on obviously a lot of our time is with loose it you know but when I'm at home is not doing anything or like feel like create things like the design that's like my hobby so that's when I start working on top thread stuff and whatever you know taking photos something like that you know you build a huge portfolio then you're like oh okay let's start putting this stuff up you know and then with right now obviously or I don't know if you know but topic and cloud center joining together so then toppers are going to have sunglasses as well so it's going to be the cloud 10 glasses rebranded with the toddler's logo okay so that's going to be taken care of it all in one and then with the watch coming that's coming out you know I'm partnering up with Brad Cameron from Australia the founder of build your empire he's got his old marketing thing going he pitched it to me so it's like I already have the resources to source out the watches and find the materials and the actual product and he has a market so kinda like plug and play you know the hardest part is finding logistics once you find the logistics like the whole customer service the warehouse the wholesaling the shipping and receiving all that stuff it's a lot easier to do is plug and play stuff you know but I don't want to spread myself too thin but it you know because you put like you like seems like no one really telling you you just learn all on your L right how do I end all this so like even tiny manufacturers you had to reach out to them directly or cool or something step that's a full-time job we have it we have a product sorcerer here you know so every new part that we want that start from a scratch concept you know those have to be if we had to hit at manufacturers so our guy on Omar our product manager ages you know sources sources out goes to a ton of manufacturers trying to get the best price and try to see what kind of turnaround times we get you know so it becomes a whole full-time job yeah and just before we have a hair be excellent ask you know if you could go back well first is there anything else you think you want to give advice to anyone who want to start a clothing brand or so do something that you've done my advice a lot of people asking all where you get this manufactured or what kind of cheese you use like like that type of stuff you should figure that out yourself because once you figure that out yourself you know the process you know you don't want to take the easy way out because when something when a situation that requires you to have all this knowledge behind you you're not going to have it you know incredibly yeah so you just got to figure it out yourself and I always tell us all the time if you're going to do it you're going to do it anyways you're going to find a way to do it it might not be the best price and it might not be the best quality up first but you're going to learn yeah you know so so yeah just just go and do it you know that's right yeah so if you could go back in time to young Randall maybe in high school maybe when you're going through hard time as entrepreneur a person just in general like life like what would be something that has someone older you would speak to younger self that then you would have appreciated I guess under Randall no one told me I had to figure out myself but what society teaches you when you're growing up there's a bunch of you know you teach you this this thing that you can never achieve you know these they tell you go to college you tell you do this stuff they don't feel you know it's just a lot of false promises or false you know elaborate amendment like just yeah there's a lot of this yeah a lot of these adults are telling me so much of you know so it's like you got to create things yourself and you know obviously keep it open mine and I were to do it again I would have obviously I knew what I wanted to do right out of high school you know when I went to college I was already set on welcome to you I would have left that a long time ago that was one of the things if I had to do it over again out what drops out sooner I I felt like I would have been a millionaire five years earlier for sure on the percentages in this room know I fight if I was because like I said I was running listed apparel while I was in college but I it took me four years to be like all right let me just drop out if I want to just to leave those four years and dropped out right then I would have been way more ahead of the game that I am now yeah you know yeah it's a know what you're doing for the college you will always be there the university will always be there they will always be there to take your money yeah all right so but it will help their opportunities and if something is going you have a good momentum it's not always going to go up this way you got to keep that going you got to keep that fire going it's not been experi you know also I think surround them for a broad good advice the other love you we can take a long way from it no problem [Music] [Music]
