Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
Ichiran in New York is the most overpriced bs. A bowl of the same ramen costs around $7 in Tokyo and over in Brooklyn it's $19.
Love ichiran in Tokyo but it's Definitely not worth $19. Plenty of good ramen elsewhere running at a much more reasonable and standard ~$12
One of my favorite Ramen joints was Setagaya in St Marks. Anybody ever try that place? I can't try these other places in NYC now since I moved to San Diego, which also has some pretty legit places by the way.
Whoever started Ichiran must be swimming in yen. The shop over here in Kyoto has a line out the door every.single.day. It's not even from Kyoto, it's from Fukuoka! Why people would wait 1 hour+ just to eat some ramen that's not even from the city you are visiting, I have no idea.
I don't remember the prices of Ichiran over here in Kyoto but it was slightly more expensive than your average bowl at a mom and pop shop. A bit overpriced? Yea. Gimmicky? Yea. Decent? Yea. Not worth paying $20 or whatever it is in NY for, or waiting more than 5 minutes on a line.
I'm saving this post for when I'm out looking for ramen.
I go to Ichiran for rice in ramen soup.
Also, the menu clearly states the egg is hard boiled... Sure one might expect it soft boiled at ramen places but if they say it'll be hard boiled...
Naruto ramen is the best in the city and I've tried them all. I also travel to Tokyo every month for work and am a ramen enthusiast.
Mew Men - closest to the current trend in Japan of light broth, clarified chicken fat, artisanal shoyu blend, smoked pork cha shu, and souvide chicken breast cha shu.
Zundoya - Fukuoka style gut bomb when you order the highest fat level, even thought they from Hyogo.
