woman who has been on Tick Tock in the past few weeks you've probably witnessed in real time the coronation of gen Z's latest it girl Sophia Richie she's a socialite model an entrepreneur best known as Lionel Richie's daughter and Nicole Richie's little sister but on April 22nd at her wedding in the south of France Sophia transcended her familial ties and became the face of quiet luxury in what has been dubbed this year's Royal Wedding Sophia Richie took Tick Tock by storm leading up to the event Sophia a relatively private figure even created a tick tock account to share a behind the scenes look at the festivities the wedding took place at hotel du cap Eden Rock a luxury Hideaway that Rivals that of the Grand Budapest and the bride was dressed in three different custom Chanel looks the guest list was star-studded with celebrities and socialites like Paris Hilton and yet the event meticulously documented by Vogue was widely deemed the epitome of stealth wealth quiet luxury and old money Sofia's now husband Elliot Grange only added to the monetary Mystique the london-born music executive is the son of Universal Music Group chairman and CEO sir Lucian Charles Grange the fact that Elliot's father is also an executive added fuel to the old money allegations which on Tick Tock is synonymous with quiet luxury in reality The Grange family wealth like the Richies is relatively new they didn't start with much but Lucian climbed the ranks of the corporate ladder while Lionel climbed the charts new money is commonly associated with Brash garish taste and logos Galore while the old money aesthetic conjures images of Simplicity neutrals and a sense of timelessness despite the novelty of her wealth Sophia Richie's wedding aesthetic fell definitively under the ladder and for that she was adored the Resurgence of the old money aesthetic has been slowly building uncertain Kardashian versus corners of the internet for years now but Sophia Richie's wedding has made the exaltation of quiet luxury louder than ever in certain communities on Tick Tock there's even a notion that if you dress like you're from old money you will attract money in the form of a wealthy husband and Sofia Richie has been used as a prime example of this before marrying Elliot Grange Sophia dated longtime Kardashian associate Scott people have taken Sophia's change in style as proof of her leveling up in her dating life listen ladies let's talk about it because we all need to be like Miss Sofia Rishi they went from this to this I think that Sofia rich is single-handedly proven to us that being elegant just looks so much better than like this over the top Kim K like look I'm not surprised that Sophia Richie changed her style and back the billionaire immediately clearly this logic is somewhat flawed because Sophia Richie was already rich before dressing in the stealth wealth aesthetic so either way she was probably going to end up with someone from a similar socioeconomic strata her new husband Elliot Grange isn't even from old money but he is perceived as infinitely more classy than Scott Disick so that's close enough for the growing Cult of wealth Whispers a corner of the internet where content ranges from old money outfit ideas to where to meet a rich husband this sort of content usually Falls within the sphere of femininity tips dating coaches and hypergamy advice which on Tick Tock has recently been flooded with clips from Sierra 7 a YouTuber who hilariously advises women on how to marry and date men for money and what if he's not attractive but wants to spoil ojas girl get you some wrong prescription contact lenses and stick them in there everything is a blur baby anyway today I want to explore the internet's Newfound fixation with quiet luxury but let's start with semantics what is the difference between old money quiet luxury and stealth wealth old money definitively refers to the established and inherited wealth of families that have been Rich for many generations think Rockefellers and Vanderbilts of course old money is nothing without its history which is often problematic and steeped in colonialism racism and unfair labor practices while many people are quick to point this out others are willing to boil old money down to tying a sweater around your shoulders or casually wearing a Blazer quiet luxury and stealth wealth have been used in recent years to Rebrand but essentially describe the same exact old money aesthetic in terms of aesthetic old money is more closely associated with prep vintage and figures like Jackie Kennedy with her Tweed Chanel suits stealth wealth and quiet luxury on the other hand seem to represent a more updated version of that aesthetic fit for the 2020s the characters on HBO's succession are emblematic of dressing in the stealth wealth aesthetic they wear simple plain borderline drab clothing that is extremely expensive but you'd only know it if you two were able to afford the 600 cashmere baseball cap that Kendall Roy has supported in several episodes this season what I find most interesting about quiet luxury discourse is the morality associated with it being less flashy but equally expensive renders one piece of clothing classy and the other trashy amongst the waspy Uber Rich this has been a long-standing tradition but now even the middle class masses have adopted this notion as of late hordes of people on Tick Tock despite having no money to hide are set on emulating the self-wealth aesthetic despite the Aesthetics aversion to logos it is nothing without its tags the price tags and the ones inside the clothing the whole point is that it looks plain but it's extremely expensive so when one tries to recreate this aesthetic with clothing that is not extremely expensive it's cosplay at best not a true representation but who cares as long as there's not a super rich person waiting in the wings to call you out on it so I hear you've made an enormous faux pas and everyone's laughing up their sleeves about your date what why why because she's brought in ludicrously capacious back in this now Infamous scene from succession Tom womscam snarks that Greg's date sticks out like a sore thumb because of her bag which to the untrained eye is inoffensive but to high net worth individuals like Tom it is an assault on the general atmosphere Tom is especially able to spot plebeians in the presence of prestige because he used to be one of them he came from the humble cornfields of Middle America before marrying into the Roy family worth billions in the first season he even gives Logan Roy a ludicrously capacious watch for his birthday and is met with contempt as the series progresses the class discrepancy between Tom and his ultra-rich wife shiv is a continual point of contention because money is power and shiv has a lot more of it this brings me back to the idea of marrying into old money which as we saw with Sophia Richie's wedding despite no old money being involved is highly romanticized this was in stark contrast with the media and commentary surrounding Kourtney Kardashian's wedding who also famously dated Scott Disick Kourtney Kardashian married musician Travis Barker a year ago in the Italian Riviera the wedding was just as star-studded and lavish as Sophia Richie's but with a distinctly different aesthetic for Sophia Richie's wedding was described as Timeless and elegant Kourtney Kardashian's was labeled tacky Courtney wore a short corset Vinnie dress designed by Dolce Gabbana while Sophia wore a high neck full-length custom Chanel gown the weddings were probably similar in price ranges that is to say prohibitively expensive but the neutral Sleek aesthetic of Sophia Richie's wedding was perceived as much more moneyed and aspirational than Courtney's opulent Gothic affair while Aristocrats were once defined by how much gold leaf they could incorporate into their gilded manners now the rich judge each other by just how wealthy they can be perceived without traditional signifiers of wealth this is the essence of quiet luxury if you know you know Francis Sola Santiago writes for refinery29 historically logos flashiness and vibrant clothing has been often dismissed by Rich and white groups according to Jonathan Square assistant professor at Parsons School of Design there's long roots to this bias that people are tapping into it's the age-old adage used to refer to gaudy rich people who can't dress however those who support quiet luxury may not be tacky but it doesn't mean they're stylish either it's like the concept of is it a look or is she just skinny we must also ask ourselves is it a look or are they just Rich quiet luxury distinctively lacks personal style and limits individuality it's found in a strict set of these clothes are ugly they're perfectly fine however I think we're giving rich people a little too much credit if you're choosing from a certain set of high-end Brands and neutral colors no matter how you pair them the outfit will probably turn out to be just fine not groundbreaking not interesting but just fine with all the Adoration of quiet luxury maybe we failed to consider that rich people dress like this because they just don't really care about style you don't have to prove yourself with logos or make yourself look interesting with color if you have as much money as Mark Zuckerberg or
