foreign if you've been on social media you're probably aware of the hype and Obsession that's been surrounding old money and quite luxury with Sofia Richie getting married to succession essentially taking over the internet I'm sure in the last month you've probably heard money speaks about wealth Whispers however this isn't just a recent phenomenon I can remember that even from the days of the pandemic on Tick Tock there were videos of the old money aesthetic with videos showing viewers how to achieve it I hate to admit it but I might have been among those who started buying sweater vests and Tennis skirts because both house was there to do during lockdown this obsession with old money was especially in contrast to new money and how society as a whole are kind of over showing off your wealth this new money look was demonstrated with the rise of flexing culture with luxury Brands putting Monograms on everything to show off one's wealth I'm sure we all remember Kim Kardashian person about leaving her Mansion to rent an island with her family and friends during the pandemic where we were all under home arrest to Kylie Jenner person two private jets with the caption you want to take mine or yours tagging her ex-partner and baby daddy Travis Scott [Music] foreign to markets business news Automotive refers to inherited wealth which has been around for several Generations examples of old money families are the Vanderbilt whose wealth dates all the way back to the 18th century in the steamboat and railroad industry the Murdoch family who've made their generational wealth as media tycoons for four generations and the Rockefeller family who are in industrial political and banking family that own one of the world's largest fortune in places like the United Kingdom this wealth transcends inherited money it also refers to inherited titles and to the aristocracy if you watch Bridgeton or any historical drama for that matter I'm sure you've come across some of these titles examples of the titles in order of hierarchy from highest to lowest are Duke Marquess L VI count and baron some of the oldest aristocratic families in the UK go back multiple centuries and when I say multiple I mean to the 12th 13th century when and of course we're all aware of the multiple royal families that still exist in Europe where you can literally inherit the title to rule over an entire country a key factor that I think everyone knows but often forgets about is that own money isn't just about being rich or having wealth it's about having worth that data back several Generations not just one or two [Music] we can all agree that Sofia Richie is having a moment after her wedding but I kept seeing the term old money thrown around about her now husband Elliot Grange whose wealth would in fact be categorized as new money although his father is one of the most powerful people in the music industry he worked to create the world that's been generated for his family Sophia Richie herself would be considered new money because the wealth of the Richie family was generated by Lionel Richie and his prolific music career [Music] this I guess brings me to the issue of glamorizing old money online which is that it's been turned into an aesthetic some of the elements that make up the aesthetic are clothes in neutral colors for example white beige cream and navy subtle and dainty jewelry and a specific but subtle sense the issue is that this is only an element of what old money is it completely disregards the main factor of old money which is having generational wealth old money isn't about how you dress that's just a prerequisite from being from a certain class it's also about what you can afford for example other elements of the old money is the type of hobbies you can partake in such as tennis golf ceiling or horse riding the style of vacations you can go on and the type of events you attend do your family have a holiday home in the Hamptons or a chalet in Italy or France do your family have boats that you can take photos on during the summer if you're British do you attend the annual Royal Henley Regatta most importantly what type of clothes you wear is less important than the brand of the clothes you wear Brands such as Brunello kitchenelli Laura Piana Ralph Lauren Chanel Celine Brioni and the row brands that only other people with old money would recognize you wearing so I don't think your 50 pound Zara Blazer is going to cut it I'm going to further discuss old money Brands when I talk about succession because what's a video on owed money and quite luxury without succession or money is a lifestyle and partake in in this aesthetic without actually having generational wealth the most you can say you're doing is cosplaying the core problem with the old many aesthetic though isn't about how the most it can be is cosplay but more about the ideological contradictions that arise from romanticizing a class that meet their wealth off the backs of the less fortunate some of these old money wealth can literally be linked to slavery plutocracy and exploitation and when we consider that odd money wealth has to be generational it means that it's often exclusionary as well how often do you see black or Asian people or other people of color on these Tick Tock videos about old money How likely is it that a black family would have the opportunity to be from an old money family when you look at the British royal family on the balcony how many people of color do you see on there all the money itself is exclusionary but the aesthetic reflects that too that's unless you search up all money for black girls or for black boys reducing old money to just an aesthetic erases the core element of old money which is how the wealth is made additionally when you search up old money aesthetic not only do you mostly see white people you're more likely to see people in smaller bodies and from the popularity of Brands such as Brandy Melville in the 2010s we know that people specifically young impressionable people usually girls will lose weight to fit into a brand or an aesthetic [Music] quiet luxury is described as logo free fashion with outsized price tags and according to Vogue it's less austere than minimalism but more polished than normal it has often been used interchangeably with the term stealth wealth however although they both share Simplicity they are not the same unlike quiet luxury which has a more minimalist but elevated and tailored look self-wealth is more about being unseen like Tech Bros although what they're wearing might be similarly priced as someone dressing among the lines of quite luxury they're usually less fashionable and formulated Mark Zuckerberg essentially has a uniform of gray and dark colored t-shirt and as ordinary and plain as they look they actually cost between 300 to 400 and they're from Brunello cuccinelli a staple brand for those who dress in the style of quite luxury when I was looking for Mark Zuckerberg's t-shirt I found this and I just felt compelled to add it to the video because why on Earth does it cost one thousand four hundred dollars there are certain items I can see being worth that price but not this Steve Job was also a tech bro who looked ordinary in a plain black turtleneck that costs 175 dollars if you don't know who these men were and you know Steve Job wasn't actually dead you could probably walk past them on the streets and wouldn't look twice to admire their fashion the term stuff is associated with wanting to not be seen or heard and doing something secretly quite luxury though basic and neutral looks elevated and expensive however stealth wealth is actively trying to blend in I previously mentioned brand Monograms that we've become accustomed to seeing on celebrities and on social media quite luxury Champions are more toned down minimalist look highlighting understated pieces high quality fabrics and tailored Cuts it's about looking like a rich person by dressing subtly simply and in a way that exudes luxury well that's the obvious markers such as an excessive logo the brands I mentioned that embody this old money style are also typically the same brands that reflect quite luxury the one thing we'll see later on with succession and that we've seen with Sophia Richie's wedding is that you can epitomize quiet luxury without being from old money Sophia Richie's wedding demonstrated that simple sophisticated classic look that most people consider to be timeless we also see this in succession which I'll go further into where the Royals who are new money as their wealth hasn't been in their family very long dress and embody this odd money quite luxury lifestyle but now I'm talking about succession that's all I'm going to be thinking about so we might as well get into my favorite show succession follows the billionaire Roy family whose patriarch Logan Roy created generational wealth through creating way star royco a global media and entertainment's conglomerate although the family is new money they've almost become the face surrounding the new conversation on old money and quite luxury I mean there's not a lack of videos on Tick Tock and now YouTube about succession and fashion I guess now you can add me to that list I'm sure you've all seen that clip of Tom talking about Greg's dates bag huh and everyone's laughing up their sleeves about your date what why why because she's brought in ludicrously capacious bag what what's even in there huh flat shoes for the Subway or lunch pail I mean Greg it's monstrous it's gargantuan you could take it camping you could slide it across the floor after a bank job the irony of this clip is that Tom is even newer money than the Roy family and has less of it way less of it and Greg has even lesser money than Tom the Roy's seem to dress and act in an old money way that they know their family will eventually become and I guess this is reflected in characters such as Tom and Greg who although are far less richer than the family they've been accepted as one I mean Greg is literally part of the family and Tom is married to shiv who is now boiler alert pregnant with his child so by association alone Tom and Greg are not only able to dress old money which we've seen with their fashion development for example Greg's clothes not only becoming more expensive but also more fitted they're also able to act odd money they're also able to act old money their entire lifestyle has become accustomed to that of the Roy for example traveling with private jets and helicopters never wearing a coat which I'm not mad about because Greg's season one cooked was ugly and ill-fitted and looking down on people who they deemed too tacky and beneath them even when beneath them is a bag that cost 1734 although we see the Roy's embody old money and quite luxury we sometimes usually threw Kendall's character see how they actually are new money in season 3 episode 7 we see Kendall dress new money-esque in a loud Gucci bomber jacket and an even louder very expensive gold chain that old money would usually snare at I couldn't find the price of the bomber jacket but I did find evidence of it being sold for over nine thousand dollars the gold chain he wears cost fifteen thousand dollars I think it's significant to add that the moments in the show where we see Kendall Veer towards a more new money fashion style it's usually when he's at his most unstable for example all three season three he was estranged from his entire family after he betrayed his father Logan at the end of season two we also see this in season one when he was gain estranged from his family after his crew failed when he decides to go into Tech we see him in a whole new style with the attempt to appear cool and ironically he doesn't decide to go in the direction of stealth wealth which would probably make him fit in better with that crowd he goes the complete opposite with more flashy items like this trainers he put on in the car on the way there additionally in season 2 episode 5 we see the contrast of the Roy family to the Pierce family who are actually of old money and how they struggle to assimilate and behave in a way that would fit in with the Pierce even after being warned by Logan we see the struggle for the Roy's to be owned money that they've been able to externally portray the rays are essentially new money cosplay and old money the same way people embracing the old money aesthetic are only cosplaying at a lesser level because at the very least the Royce can afford the items or money wealth can afford so let's dive into what some of the succession characters wear shiv Roy the character I love and occasionally hate to Hate one of my favorite outfits of hers is this Ensemble where she wears a bottom front shirt that costs 398 dollars trousers that cost 725 and a vest that costs 670 dollars this is far from her most expensive outfits and I also haven't considered what jewelry pieces she's wearing or shoes but already her outfits cost 1 793 this brown leather blazer costs 2 368 here we see her in Armani Ensemble piece that she kind of ate but straight up I have to ask why anyone would buy a sleeveless turtleneck that cost over one thousand dollars like there's literally less material on there so I don't know why it's so expensive she pairs it with the matching Blazer and trousers that cost 1025 and 625 respectfully all disrespectfully two more ship outfits and I promise I'll move on to other characters I'm just a bit obsessed with her but here we see her in a dream satin top that costs 325 dollars I can justify this price it it's cute but I can't justify where this Blazer costs 1 795 and this trousers cost 995 dollars I gathered the material for these clothes are worth it to the people who can afford to buy all their clothes in this price range but my head just can't fathom that but she slayed like she always does except from when she's like bullying Tom which is usually a lot of the time from season one to season three although this Blazer looks almost identical to the one we just saw it's twice as much costing 3790 Tom wears a watch that could literally pay for people's University tuitions and watch that could buy a house but at least it's not as expensive as Kendall's watch that costs 215 000 that I didn't include because luxury Brands tend not to put their most expensive items with prices so I couldn't find any evidence online of the price but if you want to know some of the succession clothing and what they cost there's actually an Instagram called succession fashion you can see all the fashion in the show and the Brands and how much they cost when we introduced to the piercers in season two Nana Pierce was definitely given the coastal grandmother Vibes Naomi Pierce wears this black jacket that costs two thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars but she can afford it and she looked amazing so I'd say it's worth it and this next outfit when I saw her in the first episode of season four I gasped because she looked stunning oh yeah okay so she wears this sleeveless blouse that cost 690 dollars trousers that cost 474 dollars this drop hearing that costs 425 and this sunglasses that costs 318 she looked phenomenal we regularly see Logan in these sweaters which is basically his uniform when he's not at home and it's given very much generational wealthy grandfather he wears this jacket that cost 1495 and we regularly see him and Kendall Sports caps I guess in America you call these baseball caps most of us would spend actually I don't know how much people would spend on these but not hundreds of dollars like the Roy's these lore piano acts we see them wear in varieties of colors throughout the series costs 625 dollars each Kendall I think has the most expensive style because why'd he go to Connor's wedding dress more expensively than the bride and groom combined he wore this 11 500 suits and this 750 glasses if he was wearing one of his watches that we've seen him wear throughout the series he could easily be wearing close to 250 000 the Roy's epitomize quiet luxury because they're always dressed in items that most of us couldn't even fathom spending even for a luxury brand yet we never see any clear logos even when Kendall Wears Gucci it's never logomania okay so I'm just adding this in after the series finale of succession and I'm I guess in kind of I'm kind of in shock actually because I kind of saw Tom being made CEO but I'm so surprised it's actually happened it was a great finale it was one of the few shows that actually ended on a high as in it was still at its peak of greatness and not like Game of Thrones that fell off in the last two seasons where it just didn't feel like the same show anymore I do love the series finale but I just wish we could have at least like one or two more seasons because I feel like there's so much more they could have gone into you know like menkin and you know what's happening with the election how's Tom going to be as CEO how much power is he actually going to have with him mainly being invaluable because Matson wants to have all the power and control of a oyster um yeah there's just so much I feel like we could still go into it with like one or two more seasons but it was a great it was a great ending and Tom Schiff truthers we made it through so I'm just gonna listen to My Tom shift playlist foreign I hope that I haven't been too harsh about people enjoying the old money aesthetic I think it's completely harmless unless you're one of those people who cosplays old money and quite luxury and now think you can judge or look down on what other people wear [Music] I think the major issue I have with Aesthetics in general is that the way they're sometimes presented online reduces them subcultures exist for people to feel comfortable and accepted by people with similar interests and values as them it becomes a lifestyle of how people live the same way old money isn't just about the clothes but the lifestyles of people with generational wealth an example of this is the grunge subculture that emerged in the mid-1980s with bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam this was for people with a particular fashion style music taste that usually address darker themes such as social alienation neglect and addiction and people who didn't feel as though they really fit in that they literally went underground however now Tick Tock has reduced subculture that are Lifestyles and a way of living for some people into just an aesthetic entire Lifestyles with their good and bad have been reduced into an aesthetic that romanticizes them the same way subcultures such as grunge has its dark history tree for example with excessive alcohol drug use and suicide the old money lifestyle has been romanticized into an aesthetic that disregards the problems that exist with that level of generational wealth I just think that not everything needs to be an aesthetic it just feels very chronically online especially when you consider that a lot of what Tick Tock thinks is old money is just a preppy style I hope you enjoyed this video if you did please don't forget to like comment and subscribe and maybe give it a share as well bye
