- (React) Today, we're gonna react to powerful coming out
scenes in TV shows. - Love that. - Is it the scene of Justin
coming out in Ugly Betty? We know you're gay,
and it's okay! - (React) Do you need some tissues? - No, I'm heartless,
soulless, I'll never cry! - (Nick) You know Charlie's
like my best friend. - (mom) If you're going to ask
if he can come on our Minorca holiday this year,
the answer's no, because I've already
booked the tickets. - (Nick) No, that's not what
I was gonna say. - (whispers) What were you
gonna say? - You can do it. - Ooh, ooh, oh wow,
gentle tears, we love. - (Nick) Charlie's my boyfriend. - Ooh, his little face. (clapping)
- So proud of you. - Aw. - (Nick) I still like girls,
but um... - Mm. - (Nick) I like boys too, and I just...
- Precious baby. - (Nick) Wanted you to know.
- Go off! - (mom) Oh baby. - Oof, I was worried she was
gonna freak out. - Oh, good mom,
good mom, good mom! - (mom) I'm sorry if I ever made you
feel like you couldn't tell me that. - (Nick) It's called bisexuality,
if you've heard of that. - (laughs) If you've heard of it. - I was about to say,
I was like bisexuality, as if it's new thing. - (as Nick) It's called bisexuality. - (mom) How long have you known? - (Nick) Well, me and Charlie
started going out a couple months ago.
- I'm glad the mom is supportive. - (Nick) I started liking him
way before that. - I feel like I should be commenting,
but I'm so enthralled. - (mom) Oh, I love you. - Aww!
(thumps table) - Love her so much! - I'm just assuming that
it's gonna go the worst way ever, you know what I mean? 'Cause in media, I feel like
it's usually the parent getting mad, they get kicked out. - If you wanna tell your parents, and that's exactly how
they should react. - I was a little disappointed
that both of the main characters are two white gay guys. There's so much other
representation we need. - (Casey) I'm dating Izzie. - (Doug) What, your friend Izzie? - Me!
That's my girl. - I love Atypical! - (Doug) Oh.
- Oh. - (Casey) Oh? - (Doug) Does mom know? - They typically do. (laughs) - Isn't that always the case?
Moms always know. - My mom didn't have a clue. - What's he gonna do? Please be nice. - (Doug) So I'm last? - Oh, don't make it about you. - Hm, I can relate. I'm pretty sure my dad
was the last to know. - (Casey) I mean, I was just
afraid that you'd... - (Doug) Afraid that I'd what?
- (Casey) I don't know. See me differently? - I personally never got to
come out to my dad, 'cause he passed away
before I fully knew who I was. I really do want to believe
that that is how it would have gone, and every day, I wonder if I would
have still been accepted by him. It's hard. - (Doug) I don't.
- Yeah. - (Casey) What?
- (Doug) See you differently. - Aww.
- So cute! - (Doug) You're still a pain
in the ass. - Great, good, good. Seems to be that is
the love language is sarcasm. - It all makes me cry. 'Cause it just was never
that easy. It didn't used to be,
so I'm so glad that it is. We had none of this. - Being gay is hard because
when you're born, you're immediately told
that your way of living is wrong. We have to fight so hard
just to be seen as equal people. It is exhausting. - It's just a part of you,
it doesn't change anything. It's not like you're wearing
a new color, or you have a completely
different look. - My parents didn't react
to things in a way that I had hoped,
but seeing it on TV, made me know
there was a different way. - Who's this actress, real quick? Hey, Brigette Lundy-Paine,
my name is also Izzy, I am gay. - (Robin) Do you remember what
I said about Click's class? About me being jealous? - She's so pretty. - (Robin) Like, obsessed?
- (Steve) Yeah. - (Robin) It isn't because
I had a crush. - Oh, I love this one. - They're the like,
bisexual dream. Both of them are so hot. - (Robin) I wanted her
to look at me. - Oh. - (Robin) But she couldn't
pull her eyes away from you. - (Steve) Tammy Thompson's a girl. - Like hello. (laughs) - (Robin) Steve. - Steve.
- (Steve) Yeah? - Steve.
(thumps table) Babe, Steven, Steven.
(thumps table) - (Steve) Oh.
- There it goes! - He's so pure and stupid. - (Steve) Holy [censored]. - Is it a holy [censored]?
I don't think so. - (Robin) Holy [censored]. (Danny yells) - Didn't we all think
he was gonna be such an [censored]. - Listen, for a teenage boy,
he didn't do that bad! - So hard to take him seriously
with his face like that. (laughs) - (Steve) I mean,
she's a total dud. - (Robin) She is not.
- (Steve) Yes she is. - It's such a scary thing
to have to say out loud to someone and then you're just sitting
in that air of just like uncomfortable-ness,
and then someone just breaks it, and they just start
talking to you like normal, and it's just such a relief. - Immediately talking about it
like as if it has always been. (claps) Tell my girlfriends,
like my friends that were girls was really hard, because
I hadn't come out to my parents. So then if I lost my friends,
I would be alone. - You should never be scared
to come out to your friends. If they don't accept you,
they're not your friend. - (Annie) I'm gonna go shower,
and then shower again. Yay, it's a boy. (laughs) - (Ben) Mom. - (whispers) Be brave, be bold.
I'm proud of you. - (Ben) So am I. (Danny gasps) (thumps table)
- Cute. - I don't think I would
take it that well. (Danny claps) - She knew, look at her face,
she knew. - Per. - I love that they actually
got a trans actor for this role. - (Annie) Did you tell your dad? - Loves it. - (Ben) You're first. - Ah! - Stop, why is this one
making me cry? - (Ben) Are you? - (Annie) (whispers) I always
wanted a boy. - I always wanted a boy! - Sierra, you're gonna
mess up my makeup. - At that age,
I'm just proud of them, man. - That's so sweet.
That one really got me, just like especially like
her smile of just no words, just smiling. - Great example. Not a big deal,
does not affect you, just be there to support. - That's like a big thing for him
to come out to his mom. - Hopefully we get to a point
where you don't have to come out. - How I really hope things
are going more often. - (Blanca) I kept who I was quiet
from my parents for a long time. - I heard the show's really good. - Oh, so this is Pose, right? I haven't seen this,
but I've heard a lot of good things. - The dolls will be the dolls, babe.
The dolls will be the dolls. - (Blanca) My mother kept looking
and grinning, and kept looking away, so finally, I said mother, what in the world
are you grinning about? - She is so iconic. - Oh God, I'm gonna cry. - (Blanca) She said oh,
you think you so clever. I see that little young girl
who runs in and out of your room, sneaks in and out of your room
in the dark of the night. (George laughs) I was too stunned to speak. - I love Pose. - (Blanca) So she went on to say
how she wasn't mad, and she was just so relieved
I wasn't one of those sinful gays. - Sinful gays? - (Blanca) I said mother...
- That was her. - (Blanca) That was no strange woman
sneaking through your halls. - Oh!
- Period. - (Blanca) That was me.
(Sharon laughs) I am not gay,
and I am certainly not sinful. What I am is a woman, mother. - And as we know,
that did not go well. Spoiler alert, blah!
Yeah no, mom disowns, entire family disowns,
immediately ostracized, which is unfortunately still
a common thing for trans people. - You can see that it's still
very emotional for her, but you can see that she has
some sort of acceptance and power behind it. - Whenever I watched Pose,
I always felt seen, and I always felt emotionally
attached and vulnerable. - The trans black women
in the cast are so incredibly talented. They deserve way more
than what they're given right now. - (Eric) You bullied me
for years, Adam. - I love Sex Education. - (Eric) You made me feel
unsafe for years. You were one of the main reasons
I wasn't kind to myself, and I'm supposed to believe
that you suddenly changed? - Yes. - (Eric) You're full of shame, man.
- Yep. - (Eric) And I can't be
in that place anymore. - Oh. - Little baby. - (Adam) I'm scared. - Oh. - I mean, I always felt like
the people who were the most angry about it were the ones who had
the stronger feelings towards it. - (Adam) And I think I'm bisexual. - He's just scared to be himself, and I guess he projects that
onto other people. - (Eric) Are you alright? - Let him hold your hand. Even though it's scary,
hold the hand. - Mm-hmm. - (Eric) You can't even hold my hand? - Mm-mm. - I'm literally getting goosebumps. - (Eric) You can hold my hand. - (Adam) I feel like everyone
hates me. - (Eric) Well, it's kinda hard
to like someone who doesn't like themselves. - Ooh! - You have bullied me
for so long, you made me feel like
I'm not worthy, and I can't be
who I wanna be, and now all of a sudden,
you've changed, and you're expecting me to just
forget everything. We can't forget everything. You can forgive,
but you can't forget. - I've worked really hard to feel
as comfortable as I am right now. I feel the same way,
honestly. - Internalized homophobia
is so alive and well. - There were years where
I was terrified. I thought I'd have no future, and it's just not the case,
and it's terrifying. It's a monster from
the outside looking in, but once you bite back,
that monster turns into a rainbow unicorn
and you can ride it all the way to WeHo,
ladies and gentlemen. - (Ed) And so I reckon
what makes Ed happy is you. - Oh, is he Ed? He's referring to himself
in the third person? - (React) They're pirates.
I don't know if that helps. - They're pirates?
- (React) They're pirates. - Aye, aye. (laughs) - Please don't reject him. - (Stede) Well that's... (Izzy squeaks) - Gay pirates!
Gay pirates! - That's so cute, and tender,
and gentle! - (Stede) (whispers) You make
Stede happy. - Well, just the mere fact
that we see men kissing on TV is a huge thing. - 2022, the year of the gay pirates! - This shows that there's
no limit to ever being your true self. - (Jim) Nana!
(speaks in foreign language) - (Nana) Bonifacia!
- (Jim) I go by Jim these days. - We got nonbinary in
this show too? - (Nana) Well, come in, Jim.
We'll have cake. (Sharon laughs) - She's like alright. (laughs) - (Oluwande) Nana? - Not even a second.
Jim, got it, moving. - (Oluwande) That's your Nan?
Jesus! - (whispers) Stop! - The best reaction
is no reaction. Just acceptance, and sick!
(blows raspberry) - There's a part of me
that I'd be like that. For example, I know
one transgender person, and first they went by she, a couple years later,
it was they/them. I always referred to him,
no matter where in the transition as asshole,
he's always been an asshole. - In current day media, a lot of pretty accurate
representations of coming out. I can only say that I wish
I had it when I was growing up. - I'm watching The Nanny right now, and it's just like gay joke
after gay joke, after gay joke, and none of them are demeaning,
but it's just kind of like, that was all that
the representation was, was just making jokes
about something. - Yeah, they might be
a little bit cheesy. They might be a little bit off, but as long as you are your
most authentic self, you're gonna be just fine. - Bisexuality was erased
from the board, and if there was a bisexual character,
she was hyper sexual. She, she, emphasis on she. Always down for threesomes. I'm not a very sexual person,
so I was very confused, 'cause I'm like no,
I can't, I don't identify with that, so I guess I'm not bi. I like boys, so I guess I'm not gay. - Do you know who
I came out to first? The pastor of my Lutheran church. There was no going to
the school counselor. There was no going, nobody. That's why representation
is so huge, because I felt incredibly alone. - Now seeing all of these shows,
there's so many where being gay is
so positively represented, it's so heartwarming. (laughs) - Happy Pride Month!
Brigette, my number is 97... - Thanks for watching this episode. - Don't forget to subscribe
for more videos. - Bye guys! - Eh, oop.
Sorry, don't pay attention to that. No, that didn't happen.
Stop, stop, Sierra! Sierra, cut that!
