[Music] good morning everyone and a very warm welcome to this special occasion for graduates for parents for families and for friends I declare open this congregation for the confinement of degrees and presentation of diplomas and certificates please be seated members of Senate fellow members of staff ladies gentlemen friends but most important of all our graduates from the school of law it is a real pleasure to have the opportunity to speak to you today on what is a major milestone in your life your graduation today marks the end of what has been a remarkable Journey for you throughout your education but in particular at Queen's University a journey that has helped to shape and prepare you for the future as you get ready to embark on the exciting next chapter of your life of course we are all very aware that arriving at this point has not been an easy Journey for you there have been challenges and hurdles along the way over the past few years your cohort in particular has faced a unique set of challenges covid-19 prepared you to adapt how you interacted with your peers the way also that you engaged in university life and how you learned that all changed I recognize that this has not been easy for you but the fact that you're here today is Testament to the tenacity of spirit and resilience that you have you have demonstrated resilience in abundance we fully appreciate that for a significant number of you here today your graduation day is different to what you had expected when you embarked on your University Journey the recent marking and assessment boycott has meant that some of you are receiving a degree with your classification pending and for some with your degree title pending our Focus has continued to be on you our students and we've recently reached a local agreement which means that your work will now be marked and all final degree titles and classifications awarded by the end of August whilst we know that this is unsatisfactory for you it does not detract from your achievement or the sense of accomplishment the celebration and the pride that you should feel today your resilience and your determination to succeed have led you to where you are today being a graduate of Queen's University just two months ago this Hall was the venue for another important event on this platform we saw famous faces Prime Ministers presidents world leaders all coming together for a conference to Mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Belfast agreement and it was fitting that such an event should take place here at Queens peace and prosperity our Vital ingredients if we are to move forward as a thriving Society and those aims are embedded in our universities ethos acknowledging our civic responsibility at the conference our former Chancellor Senator George Mitchell delivered a keynote address reflecting on the peace process leading up to the Good Friday Belfast agreement in that speech he reminded us that within the word impossible is embedded the positive word possible it was a powerful message reminding us all that what can be achieved with belief and with determination as a university we believe it is our responsibility to make a difference and we are also determined to drive forward positive change not just in Northern Ireland but nationally and globally our mission is simple to reach out to people and help to transform their lives through our research and through educating talented and ambitious people like you you who will go on to make a valuable contribution to society and community as Queen's graduates you are the future of our society as law graduates you have a breadth and a depth of legal knowledge you have high levels of intelligence drive and Imagination you have the ability to think laterally be analytical and present your arguments clearly and convincingly as this chapter in your education closes irrespective of your next step what you have learned throughout your degree that equips you for the future only last week on this stage we heard from Paul Marshall Barrister in commercial law who acted pro bono for three of the 42 convicted postmasters in the repeals against convictions on prosecutions brought by the post office what is commonly known as the post office scandal a scandal that has exposed the most widespread miscarriage of Justice in English legal history with 918 prosecutions made on the grounds of theft false accounting and or fraud when in reality these discrepancies were due to software and system failures despite a ruling by the court of appeal that led to 39 of the 42 appeals being quashed the personal and the professional cost to those individuals convicted were enormous many of whom became bankrupt they lost their jobs they experienced divorce and family breakdown and they served time in prison as Paul Marshall summarizes it was a combination of unethical business practices compounded by legal failure by lawyers and judges that led to the miscarriage of justice and lives being ruined so what can we what can you as graduates learn from this I hope your time at University has instilled a commitment to civic responsibility and ethical leadership so use skills and the knowledge you have acquired here to drive forward change and be a force for good be confident in your ability grew in your careers with courage and with conviction you are empowered by your scholarship with belief and determination you will make a difference to the world around you just as queens has made a difference to you it won't happen overnight you need to be focused and you need to be consistent in your attitude and in your behavior as Ruth Bader Ginsburg former associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States stated real change enduring change happens one step at a time she also said that you should fight for the things that you care about do it in a way that will lead others to join you and in particular when things seem impossible recall those words in the impossible is the possible I wish you every success in your future careers and I look forward to hearing about your many achievements in the years to come but that's for the future today is about celebration it's a day for you and your family and for the friendships that you have made here at Queens some of which I hope and I know will last a lifetime so enjoy your moment you've earned it congratulations to you all and very best wishes for the future thank you will all graduates please rise in the name and by the authority of the
