quarterfinals day at the yonex sunrise Hong Kong open and there's just one more quarterfinal to come and it features the defending champions and current world number ones Marcos finale Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya tsukumo leo up against a pair who's had come through the qualifying new Korean pair of kimchi junk and Lee yong-dae the young day four-time former champion with two film of partners and there's the magnificent trophic that the players will be playing for at the World Tour Finals in Guangzhou next month well we know the other semi-finalists but looking at the quarter-final stage three pairs from Indonesia so six different nationalities but just four seeds and if you were with us earlier you would have seen Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan beat the European champions in two straight games so will it be three indonesian pairs in the semi-final stage miscue korean pair of kim ki-jong and the yong-dae prevent the defending champions progressing through to the semi-final stage well not surprising this is the first meeting between the two pairs because kim and lee only formed their partnership the spam masters super 300 that's not entirely true actually because they did play together at the 2012 you know World University Games in Guangzhou in Korea which they won they won the gold medal there then they have won two titles this year not any more about that in a minutes because we're looking at Kevin Sanjaya soo Kamali up one of the most exciting players you will ever see on a badminton court 23 years of age born in banki wang geek easternmost end of java he and his partner are enjoying their seventy second week in total as well number ones Marcos finale Gideon was also a quarterfinalist in this tournament with previous partner Marcus Kido so this is fourth quarter final Gideon and they have been in an incredible nine finals from their previous 12 tournaments beats Hiroyuki and Noah you too Watanabe in just 28 minutes seen the first round and then the two-time beaten finalists Matthias BOE and Carsten Mogensen came from and game down to win that site second game and then ran away with the third an hour and five minutes for that victory yesterday so to Lee yong-dae six finals here five in men's doubles was knowing the four titles that he won but also lost in the final in 2011 with the late John J song also reached the mixed doubles final in 2008 with lee huigyeong and even though he's still playing I think many people regards Lee yong-dae is one of the all-time greats kim ki-jong 28 years of age born in that dungeon and pay no attention to their world ranking they've only got three tournaments towards that world ranking of 71 there Kim he would jaunt has been number two in the world with former partner Kim Sarang and Lee yong-dae has been number one in the world with four different partners three of them in the men's doubles looking at their path through to today's quarterfinal qualifying round against the Malaysians and then in the first round they beat last year's been in finalists number seven seeds men's Conrad Ahmed's calling in two straight games and then beat teammate strong and Kim in yesterday's second round encounter so simon al from hong kong his are on par for this one in right boss the service judge from denmark Oh [Applause] [Applause] so the four-time former champion a young date getting there spends doubles underway with his new partner Kim Heechul it's interesting the two Koreans actually played against each other in the final of the Hong Kong open that was five years ago when Lee yong-dae a new young son it's kim ki-jong and kim sarang in that final yeah well I for one have miss seeing the currents on the world stage good 18 months without them now competing as independent players service fault calls oh come on leo [Applause] Oh [Music] Oh superb finish they're vicious reverse slice well this is going to be intriguing battle because we've got a very attacking play pair against two players you have incredible defenses [Applause] sorry [Applause] Lee yong-dae six medals from World Championships five in the men's doubles three silvers World Championship gold medal only thing really missing for his CV because he does have an Olympic gold medal that was in the mixed doubles with Lee hojun in Beijing in 2008 look at that defense [Applause] [Music] as good serve for straight points service for called too high it's time called only young date oh my goodness in a service era from Gideon [Applause] [Music] oh that's a perfect serve you may have actually been dropping short but Gideon was committed to it he was slightly deflected by the top of the tape oh don't believe it that's extraordinary neck quartz yes Betty we're not seeing that again that was extraordinary play at the net [Applause] while the fans just loving it and how could you not enjoy this men's doubles auto rally the flat fast exchanges and the Koreans absolutely matching Indonesian for pace [Music] the springs going in the racket first off to try and get a new racket I've been leaving a good time to pick it up so a four-point advantage for the qualifiers kim ki-jong and lee yong-dae the four-time former champion and for the record the young Dae won his four titles two thousand eight and nine with the lates jung jae-sung 2013 and 2015 with you young Sam a lot of play [Applause] service o Allah yeah why gotta get this man involved at the front of the court tsukumo leo the drive defense from Leon gate [Applause] [Applause] super disguise and change a face from kim hee-jung look at that defense initially and then the beautiful drop shot [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Oh delightful [Applause] expect the unexpected with this man it's always something I thought about Lee yong-dae and he was playing prior to his comeback he was always a little too deep in his defensive stance to the drop shot opportunity missed as far as kim ki-jong is concerned play service for called well the only player on court who hasn't been called yet for a service fault is kim ki-jong oh yes they're concentrating their attack on kim ki-jong indonesian [Applause] [Applause] he is taking his time [Applause] [Music] there he was alert to the fix of their noses in front the Koreans what a net shot wonderful drop shot once again from kim ki-chun [Applause] Oh [Applause] yeah to change pace from tsukumo leo two points away from the opening game now kim ki-jong and lee yong-dae earlier this year they also one of them a cow super 300 but they've never been in a semifinal at this level as a pair the game second time lee yong-dae has been faulted [Music] [Applause] oh yes is lethal when he's at the front of the court tsukumo leo interception and then managed to reach the next one and just brought it down so steeply and the defending champions our back level 19 all who's gonna have the game point opportunity its next rally will decide it and it is the Koreans who have the game point opportunity [Applause] 2000 extra points required until the clear two-point winning margin the return [Music] it's so seconds Aimpoint opportunity for the Koreans unbelievable he gets back the neck cord [Applause] all strings have gone in the racket of Leon day don't believe it [Applause] he's playing home with his broken rockets how is he controlling it was running of the match surely [Applause] throws the broken racquets to one side Lee yong-dae oh he felt the pace of that for the opening game took indeed room and Lee yong-dae on their second game point opportunity 2220 what a thriller the opening game 22 minutes and that has got to be the longest rally of the match a hundred and one shots amazing absolutely amazing rally [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so the second game if it's half as good as the first we're in for a treat 22 22 the Korean player had to fight through the qualifying because there and played enough tournaments to get the ranking up at the moment [Applause] [Music] that served mainly games iron short but he was committed to the return kim ki-jong as great placement of the smash towards the right hip of Gideon [Applause] well the Indonesian pair last year won seven Super Series titles which was a record they've already won seven World Tour titles this year this tournament Somers World Tour Finals to try and break their own record for total number of tournaments won in a calendar year that's as far as the men's doubles is concerned of course there's a challenge here fear they might lose this challenge well the fans are shouting out there looking up at the Giants screen waiting for Hawkeye here we go says it was a long [Applause] well it seems to me as if the Indonesians are quite happy to work the Koreans that start this second game lifting to the back of the court because they will have noticed no fatigue and out of breath the crews were to that marathon Mars rally the only game a bunch of more shots third time he's been faulted that's great defense yeah water shot from kim ki-jong [Applause] five full [Applause] lovely change of pace number of times that he's managed to do that kim ki-jong that's a great serve the old challenge champ for lee yong-dae our fans are shouting in fans have been right most of the time today they were wrong that time first just have one challenge remaining now in this second game oh goodness me the steep and there's too steep strings went in the racket and that smash when it's down so steeply I think he bounced his side of the court before it went under the net no data did [Music] a six [Applause] am i sensing the turning of the tide just missed it five straight points to the defending champions Gideon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] totally ridiculous so much topspin on that little return of serve absolutely tremendous I don't know how on earth he does it I really don't for point advantage of the defending champions well the fans getting rather excited because Leon date it's taking his shirt off is changing his shirt look at that return of surf how does he do that how does he create that angle look at that that's so amazing [Music] [Applause] [Music] well left [Applause] oh well he's hit so many beautiful drop shots so far in the match alright one didn't even reach the net brilliance always another challenge here Jim was convinced it was white it was called good [Applause] [Music] and it was good so no challenges left now kim ki-jong and lee yong-dae [Applause] nine of the last 11 points to the Indonesians Springs gone in the racket so sue Kamali up ten of the last 12 points now good defense he drives that shot back seed implants numerous times Gideon and he plays it with a backhand grip even though he's playing it from the forehand side he's a remarkable shot [Applause] I think the Koreans have just about given up on their second game yeah what did I say earlier about the Indonesians just wanting to work their opponents that was quite obvious in that rally 12 of the last 14 points now 5 6 down yeah there's no real effort on the smashes from the back of the court from kim ki-jong wants to give up on this second game but the Indonesians won't let them because if they keep lifting to him and then they put that defensive shot wide on parts gonna have a word [Applause] well Simon out saying you've got to use your best effort there's a case for he jiong having not used his best effort in that rally but his genuine tactic for the Indonesians to just lift the shuttle [Applause] genuine and totally legitimate tactic to just lift the shuttle you know that completely just playing on Kim [Applause] yeah I thought there try and wear him out he certainly didn't have any power in those smashes well then he probably realized this second game is beyond them it's game point how opportunities galore as far as indonesia's and consent 21 942 minutes into the match and it is one game all [Music] [Music] [Music] 20 seconds so the players return to court for the start of this third and deciding game and I don't think they'll be much doubt that the Indonesians once again try and work kim ki-jong at the back of the court certainly doesn't look as fit and trim as he did when he was playing a couple of years ago y'all got some great shape though yeah well lift to Kim again yeah for himself forward and got the batterer of tsukumo leo on the net play it's not often I say that [Music] [Applause] well that's quick back [Applause] servus fault fault [Applause] sorry service faults apiece but all three from the grains have come from the man about to serve lee yong-dae [Applause] they're absolutely pressurizing kim ki-jong oh there is making him smash from the back of the court or whether it's when they're smashing at the koreans they're picking on Kim all the time may I put interception from Lee yong-dae [Applause] SuperMario it is best [Applause] now strings have gone I have no real hope of controlling that's second and third smash for e-flat [Applause] now when you're tired timing goes out completely miss time that are shot [Applause] just long challenge I saw was very risky on the far back line from where you'll play make the challenge a long way out [Applause] one challenge through me Oh - the moppet didn't come home while we were waiting for Hawkeye [Music] laughs Oh clever clever play from Marcus finale Gideon great awareness of where the gap was oh yes me oh this is brilliant fabulous Rolly [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] well I think my Koreans are running out of ideas I think ok-jung is also running out of puffs Oh Super Mario once again you're showing us how fast he is at the front of the court not only fast movement and first racket work fast thinking to know where to place the shuttle interception very few players would have been able to intercept at all so that's a third service fault called on tsukumo leo now but excuse me Calvin [Applause] [Applause] [Music] yeah well I agree that players shouldn't be going and talking to the service judge but to say he was making the point by just having those little perspec devices with the line on them and just measuring where that came on his body [Applause] [Music] I always missed it that's far too flat [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they're still pressurizing Kim shows want respect they've got for Lee yong-dae [Music] [Applause] so they change ends with the defending champions with a two-point advantage Gideon and tsukumo leo two minutes shy of the hour mark so how do you know Amerinet I've been given the advice needs a plaster for his thumb it's a blister comes from not playing full-time for the last 18 months hands have gone soft so the tournament referee comes on the hurt I saw him for a job he is from Thailand with the medical team it's not a serious injury he just needs a little plaster I think oh it's yeah [Applause] sticky blaster now is it first yes it is for his thumb it is a blister No rephrase to many chefs spoil the broth comes to mind [Applause] I can't let a blister stop your plane [Music] so the play kind of resumed the back on that thing can he jump [Applause] Oh service era second [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well once these two get back fooling fit cuz I think they're both struggling physically now stamina wise I think they'll be a real force to be reckoned with on the world tour Oh [Applause] he was fortunate that was a winner because we both the springs of his racket with that final shot Kim [Applause] peddling Gideon to upright in his stance really defensively and you're defending you need to crouch down low [Applause] 14 as good return of serve [Applause] topspin your service era now from Gideon to service errors apiece good rally brilliant this is amazing well [Applause] [Music] 14:15 [Applause] what a good sir got slightly deflected by hitting the top of the tape and after an hour and seven minutes it's one game all in 15 or brilliant [Applause] 16:15 replacement of the smash from gideon and the reply came back up into the hitting zone of tsukumo leo that's a missed opportunity and he knows it [Applause] [Applause] that's another error from Lee yong-dae [Applause] [Music] the flexor totally deceived Lee yong-dae and from 15 all for quick points to the defending champions five quick points and therefore five match point opportunities [Applause] six straight points [Applause] 21:15 in the deciding game from 15 or an hour and ten minutes for the victory well opening game some superb badminton and then the fitness levels the koreans was really tested great to see the koreans back on the world stage it really is 21:15 deciding game and ten minutes so their confirmation of that score line twenty twenty two twenty one 92115 in the deciding game so that brings to a conclusion quarterfinals day here and it's just gone Midnight's here in Hong Kong well the second session started with men's doubles and finished with men's doubles the first of the men's doubles the two-time former world champions in 2014 winners Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan were too good for the European champions so they had to come from seven thirteen down in the opening game then it was home delight in the men's singles because Li check you from Hong Kong who'd started in the qualifying came through against Samir Verma who was in the final here two years ago 21 11 in the deciding game then it was women's doubles in the World Championships silver medalists and current world number ones Fukushima and he rota had a very good match against Harris and Pradeep Tober two straight games then we had a wonderful women's single with tae-soo Yin the three-time winner and two-time defending champion home for a third consecutive title here at the Hong Kong open despite being 10-5 up in the opening game managed to lose that 21 18 but came back very strongly as you can see 9 and 14 in a match just three minutes shy of the hour mark and as we've just witnessed in the men's doubles the defending champions Gideon and tsukumo leo coming through in three games against the new korean pair who had come from the qualifying kim chee cheong and lee yong-dae aran 10 minutes for that one with semi finals tomorrow it's the same system as today two sessions so the first session
