today I'm out here working on the Corel fence again and the goal is to just get as much done as I possibly can that's what's going on today on Farmer Tyler Ranch [Music] with a project like this you're literally just doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over notch in the pipe welding the pipe notching the pipe welding the pipe so when I do a job like this as I'm working I'm trying to think of ways that I can save a little bit of time you know even if it's only five seconds here five seconds there at the end of the day that adds up and at the end of five or six days that you might be working on something it really adds up I'm reminded of a project that I had to do several jobs ago where I was building a catwalk to hang up inside of a grain storage warehouse and I was building a catwalk in 20 foot sections and then another outfit came in with the crane to hang it up I was getting paid per 20-foot section of catwalk in total I had to make like eight or ten of them the first catwalk took me about eight or nine hours to make but each one was the same so by the time I got to the last catwalk I think I had it down to like six hours is all that it took me so saving a little bit of time here and there definitely adds up at the end after I get this first rail done it is more time efficient to just do one span at a time so and what I mean by a span would be just do like all the horizontal pipe between these two posts then do all the horizontal pipe here and just work my way on down the line the reason that's more efficient is because I can set all my tools up in one spot and I'm not walking around so much you don't realize how much time you spend walking around but it's quite a bit another thing that I noticed that was really taking a lot of time is the last time I worked on this I was only using one extension cord so every time I had to change power tools I had to track down where the end of the cord was unplug it plug it into the new tool and we're probably only talking about like 30 seconds maybe not even that but when you're doing that you know 50 60 times in a day that really adds up so today I've got three extension cords one for each power tool that I will need and I'm hoping that that's safe sometime as well one concern I have though is with three chords I might just spend all my time untangling extension cords so I'm going to plug the bandsaw into the ecoflow over here I'm using this to charge all my batteries and since this chord will now be coming from a different direction hopefully tangling isn't as big of an issue in the last video on this project I know I just kind of went through and worked and didn't really explain anything that I was doing so I think in this video I want to take a little bit more time to explain what I'm doing how I'm doing it and if someone out there is watching that wants to build a fence like this and you're like me you're a one-man band I'll show you kind of some of the tricks that I use that makes this possible to do by yourself and the first step to hang in pipe is to get a good measurement and this sounds like a no-brainer super simple but actually getting a really good accurate measurement between two round pipes is actually kind of hard so let me show you what I do to fight this problem the hard part about getting an accurate measurement is you've really got nowhere to hook your tape measure to some tape measures have a magnet on the end that would work for this but even so you got to pull this pretty tight because if your tape measure sure is sagging you're not going to be getting an accurate measurement so because we've got nothing to hook the tape to that is where my best friend the C-clamp comes into play and I've actually modified this clamp with a little piece of Channel iron on the end so that it it can like bite and clamp on a round surface a little bit better now with clamp on there we've got a great place to hook the tape measure to we can pull it nice and tight and get a good measurement we're at about 101. let's get a piece of pipe up on the stands and I'll show you how I measure and cut that the nice thing about the first Notch is there's really not a lot of measuring or thinking involved we're just going to cut this and then the second Notch we have to be a little bit more careful about how we go about things but this first one it's really a no-brainer let's do it this cutting guide is one that I made you can buy something similar to this but this is a little bit special for this application because we are welding two and three eighths OD oil pipe to two and seven eighths OD oil pipe so we need a notcher that's going to allow for that so with all my lines marked out and I'm happy with that I'm just going to slide this back out of the way we'll come in here with the plasma cutter and cut these out earplugs in foreign [Music] [Applause] what's cool about this cutting guide that I really didn't think about when I made it is that since it is made out of two and seven eighths pipe you can use it to sort of test fit this Notch and see where you might need to grind a little bit more or find out that it's perfect so now that I'm happy with the notch on this side we can measure off of the deepest part of the throw of the Notch and we can make our mark on the other end of the pipe so we know where to notch it on that side but before we can measure and start marking up the other side first we need to level up this side and then clamp it to the stand so that it doesn't move [Music] we know that our distance is 101 and that is 101 from the deepest part of the notch to the deepest part of the new Notch so I will hook my tape right here and that's the point that we're going to measure from 101 right there so we've got 101 right here and you can see we've got quite a bit of extra what I have found what's been the easiest to do this is to now cut this pipe off about three quarters of an inch past the mark that I just made I'll cut it off with a band saw and then I'll have enough room to make a notch but then I won't be having a bunch left over the reason why I don't just slide the template all the way up the pipe to here is because this side of the pipe has the coupler so the pipe is expanded a little bit and my cut template will not fit over that I suppose I could slide it all the way down from the end but this seems to work just as well [Applause] [Music] now the Moment of Truth we get to hang the pipe up and see if everything fits and looks right I'll show you a little trick that I use to hang the pipe by myself again we rely on our old friend the C-clamp basically just want to clamp this onto your post so that the bottom here is about where you think the bottom of your horizontal rail is going to be and then we'll do the same thing on the next post yes and about here the nice thing is if these clamps end up being in the wrong spot they're super easy to move [Music] [Music] I'm running eighth inch 7018 at about 110 amps somewhere around in there and that seems to be just about right for this pipe it's it's roughly a quarter inch wall thickness you could run three thirty seconds rod on this but I like the eighth inch Rod because occasionally you are filling some gaps so it's nice to have the extra filler metal going in there it's just a little bit faster you're not changing your rods out quite so much if you're wanting to learn how to weld or you're just starting to learn how to weld I have a little bit of advice for you the first one being learn how to stick weld that should be the first process you learn if you learned how to mig weld first some would argue you didn't really learn how to weld you learned how to pull a trigger being proficient with a stick welder will help you in learning any other process that you want to learn whether it's Mig or TIG in fact when I first started learning how to weld it was in a shop class in high school and our instructor made us all start out on the stick welder so after kind of getting a handle on how to stick Weld and then moving over to a MIG welder I cannot believe how easy it was to mig weld the other thing is while you're welding do everything to make yourself comfortable while you're running that bead you don't want to be in a funky position or where it's hard to move around to the end or where your bead will end in fact a lot of times you will see me before I strike my arc I kind of like move my body in the position that I know I will end up in just to make sure that I can smoothly move my my hands and my arms or my torso whatever it's going to take to achieve that there's no sense in being uncomfortable it's going to make your welds worse because you're going to start to rush The Arc a little bit because you want to get out of that position so now that we have got this pipe welded into place I can Mark out on the post where all of the next pipes will go and we're kind of I'm kind of just doing this down the line as I go to keep everything horizontal and looking good for this pipe the level told us where it needs to go we're just going to make a mark right at the center of that pipe and now I can take my tape measure and I am spacing this pipe one foot on Center so now I can just go through and make all my Center marks so that gets me to the point where I am done with this pipe and I am ready to move on to the next one the process will be exactly the same all over again I've got to do this in total 40 times I've got eight spans here five rails each and I've got seven done so that means I've only got 33 more to go let's just put our heads down get to work and see how many of these I can get done today oh [Music] come on [Music] well shoot I think I could have actually got a little more done today but the air compressor ran out of gas so that's uh that's a problem because the plasma cutter needs compressed air in order to make the cut yeah once I got everything welded that I could get welded it's kind of dead in the water I was able to get finished my continuous rail here all the way to the end as some of you know I wanted to get this done so that all the posts were tied together and as I complete the project there's no chance of anything moving or anything like that and I got my first section done here we're moving right along but there's still a ton to do there's no getting around it this is going to take a lot of hours a lot of my time to get this done but the reason why I feel like it's worth it is because once this is done it should be done forever thanks for hanging out with me today guys and I hope I'll see you again on Farmer Tyler Ranch thank you [Music]
