[Music] I don't think he knows what to do I think he's confused all right so today so you watch me disk but we're going to be in something a little bit different today this is a seven shank disc Ripper that I'm going to be taking out it's different from the regular disc because it doesn't just have these here about these these huge Shanks these go way deeper in the ground than the discs do so the goal what we're going to be accomplishing today we're gonna be ripping up the hard pan so when you drive tractors over say like endros for example a lot where trucks are parked a lot of heavy equipment is driving over it a lot the ground becomes Compact and compacted you can take a disc over it but it only gets about this much of the dirt these Shanks are going to be ripping way deeper so we're going to be doing this before the ground freezes it's actually super gorgeous out today for November I think it's high in the 50s all week so we're going to get this job done then the ground will freeze and then in the spring we'll go over those really compacted areas again with the disc to break everything up into small chunks and everything will be ready to be planted into the tractor we have hooked up to this seven shank disc grifter which I really just like saying it sounds really job I really like that we don't get to do that very often around here no one no one has one of these we bought this off Big Iron this job is steel is more commonly done in more wetter areas of the US where they're trying to really turn the soil and get all that moisture dried out we don't do this very often so I'm pretty excited about this job and for a big beefy job like this what other tractor would we be hooked up to except the one that has the massive LSW tires on so between Laura and I we've just called this tractor big tires now it works it works really well like Dad calls it that Mom calls it that it is big tires it's the 83 35 R Johnny inflation has us all thank you cut back upside now on to the video so this is our field right here there's the outline of it Grant explain this field to us explain its personality so here is Interstate 80 and here's a railroad so when they're building the interstate there was a concrete plant in this field my grandpa loved deals on Fields And so there's a literal concrete plant in this field so it's really hard and there's a lot of truck traffic and then when we Harvest we always Park the trucks right there and you can see that the crops are all brown and so we're gonna go use the disc gripper and hopefully bring some more life don't tell Grant this he's still in the shop but I don't trust the Integrity of these tires just saying I mean it's not like I I don't have a reason not to trust them they just look a little sketchy to me so I'm gonna be keeping an eye on those as I rode this machine to the field also I am a firm believer that these safety chains need to be hooked up you know [Music] tires look like they're holding up so far check this out the tractor is working holy cow I love having these big tires for the traction they provide they are gripping see what kind of job this thing did wow look at this smells so good wow it's a lot of moisture look at that all right so here is the before and it you can see this stuff is it's dry on top but once we get down look at this you just ripped right down there that took that stock out when you turn the dirt around it's wet down there that's great all this organic material that was left over from Harvest is just getting turned is going to be used by the soil broken down used for nutrients to get right up to that fence line man it's really difficult to back up and film at the same time I just pick up and then back up so that I'm straight and then set it down you don't really want to turn with your disc in the ground because those things are just straight there's like no movement to them because we're trying to turn up some really hard dirt so when I put the Ripper in the ground I want to just head straight in One Direction so I back up and talk everything perfectly straight then I set it down then I start going that way I'm not like going into a turn with the Ripper down so that's really hard on the discs and the shanks too and I don't want to break anything or rip anything off dirt can be surprisingly hard dirt can get to be like concrete so you think how can dirt break off chunks of metal but you'd be surprised [Applause] [Music] I couldn't quite get it all so I'm gonna make a few more passes but I want to just stop with the Ripper in the ground so that I can show you a little bit closer what each thing is doing so this first round of discs is angled this way and then here's these Shanks that are staggered a man more Shanks here there and there and then these displays throw the dirt the opposite direction so they pitch it that way [Music] the longer I farm the more I realize I start to pay attention to different things like the vehicles that are going down the road and the different tractors and implements that my neighbors use and why I do certain practices on the ground and that's something I really enjoy about farming is the amount of time that I get to be in the cab and think I went to a bachelorette party this weekend and I realized that there was just so much this is gonna make me sound like a country bumpkin probably there was so much noise in the city that I went to I found it difficult to even think and so now being back in the countryside and in my tractor cab I feel like I have the silence that I need and the time to think in the mundane Taps I feel like I can actually think about what I'm doing and I don't know if that makes sense and like I said it probably makes me sound like a country bumpkin but I love living in the country and I love what I do this is arguably going to be the most compacted past because it's the field entrance right here and right alongside that railroad track like Grant said uh concrete Factory here before and ground is just hard here just hard so we are really putting the tractor to work and it feels good to have the tractor putting in some effort you can feel it digging oh my goodness pulls hard wow [Music] [Music] all done with this field ready to move on to the next one I got to the next field and I just wanted to say holy cow what a gorgeous night on this area that I'm doing it used to be an old Farmstead instead of looking for chunks of concrete we're going to be looking for remnants of a house from years and years ago this field has been anhydrous so full fertilizer has been put on so you can see from all the stripes in the field so I'm not going to be doing the part that's been fertilized but I am going to be doing this little section right here so far I found a few chunks of concrete like Foundation pieces and a few bricks I created a little pattern I thought it was kind of cute I'm having a lot of fun out here it is so satisfying to see the chunks of dirt get broken up into smaller and smaller pieces these kind of jobs are just so fun [Music] foreign really well I'm excited because none of my tires blew no tires blown up that was my goal for today so you well to get all the roofing done but then also that I didn't blow a tire I don't know if you've looked at the tires recently on that thing do you remember last year we had replaced two of those things well okay that's what it was I knew it when I was looking at the tires I was like I don't feel a little sketchy about these but I don't know what that's what it was yeah we went and pulled them off some old piece of equipment and put them on this one yeah well I'm happy that they that they survived and I'm also glad I didn't pick up any big chunks of concrete and get them wedged between the discs that was another thing that I didn't want to happen I also didn't want any bearings to grow out I guess I just wanted to go smoothly but it did I'm really happy so I feel like it was a really good day I'm kind of sad that did you have a good day uh yes I found a water leak oh fix it thanks well I haven't fixed it I just found it okay I think we're gonna wrap up the video thanks for watching today um subscribe if you want to see more and we'll see you next time bye
