puerto vallarta is one of mexico's most beautiful beach towns located on the pacific coast and featuring a warm tropical climate year round vallarta is a great place for expats retirees and location independent nomads to live so how much does it cost to live in puerto vallarta for less than a thousand dollars per month it's possible to live in a nice area within walking distance to the beach fourteen hundred dollars per month is comfortable most nomads and expats i know live for around this budget two thousand dollars per month and you can live very well coming up we'll break down these budgets in more detail and give you specific examples i will talk with people living in each one of these price ranges and will tour apartments in these price ranges as well [Music] my friend sam is a university student from canada her classes went online during kovid so she moved to mexico so i decided to come mostly because it's sunnier i mean in canada right now there's no everywhere and you're in your apartment you cannot go out here it's so much better you have the sun you can go to the beach so it's really better and also really cheaper for the same money i'm gonna use in canada i can have way more things here i can like go to the restaurant eat tacos stuff like this that in canada i would not be able to do that much um i'm trying monthly to stay around 700 canadian dollars mostly i'm trying to spend like 10 canadian dollars a day excluding the place where i'm staying sometimes i'm gonna cook and like always counting what i'm gonna spend but it works i met sam at our apartment building which consists of several airbnb rooms as well as some long-term apartments all on the same property there are several economy in mid-range options here's a tour of one of the airbnb rooms an airbnb like this will likely cost around thirty dollars per night during the winter months if you book an entire month and deal directly with the owner you can find a place like this for around 500 per month and if you book multiple months you may get even more of a discount prices will often vary depending on the season and supply and demand if you stay at casa missile moore's pv expect to be fed breakfast is included in the price and veronica often creates specialty meals during the week [Music] is they are from squinata from sinaloa for mazatlan there is a common shared kitchen as well as a rooftop and a large balcony where guests can share meals or have a private table if you are there for a holiday or a birthday there will likely be a celebration guillermo and veronica are great hosts guillermo likes to grill amigo and guests will often prepare a group meal what do we got going on here uh coconut fried shrimps coconut fried shrimp what do we have in there fam all kinds of veggies we each pitched in five dollars and sam cooked us a meal of fresh vegetables and all you can eat coconut shrimp here is a tour of a two-bedroom furnished apartment that guillermo has available and um how much is this a month for a year lease is 600 or 12 000 pesos okay include y5 that is reliable propane water and sewer and electricity without ac without ac and so if somebody's using ac in the hot month it will be maybe sixty dollars or like a hundred dollars extra if you use it reasonable right if you use it 24 hours it will be more than a monthly rent a simple one-bedroom apartment outside of the city center is approximately 340 us dollars per month with a year lease a simple one-bedroom apartment in the city center is around 600 us dollars per month with a year lease and a nice two-bedroom apartment will start around a thousand us dollars per month amenities may include a private swimming pool unique architecture a great view and a great location near some of the most exciting parts of the city [Music] i'm on my way to my friend olga's house for a house tour and right now i'm about five blocks from the beach so just down the street this way is the melakum and as we go up through the neighborhood here in centro it gets it starts to get a lot steeper and this is the road up to her house i've got another friend that lives right here at an apartment on this corner and uh we'll do a tour there also so you can see two of the places in this neighborhood what they look like and what they cost if you do live in this neighborhood you will have some hills to go up okay and we're here i'm at the gate at olga's apartment now and as you can see there's an amazing view right from here but her apartment is still up a whole nother level and they have nice security right here at the entrance to the apartment complex hi guys tell us your websites dreamsinghills.com at latinasatravel.com how'd you find this place first of all i found this place on one of the facebook group for rentals like i think that's the best way honestly to find properties everybody's posting and it's just about uh usually you cannot you can just read what they post or you can uh write you know what you want and your budget and you're looking for two bedrooms with vendor and people would just reply with different options and how much are you paying right now i paid like 500 we all included like wi-fi water electricity and gas 500 us dollars yes one bedroom one kitchen one bathroom and an amazing view and a rooftop with a pool yeah the best part show the kitchen here sure this is my kitchen as you can see like i love this place because it's outdoor indoor right you can just move your table outdoors and eat right there it's amazing the kitchen as you can see it's pretty comfortable we said for one person or even for two yeah okay you got a fan in here and you've got gas cooking nice stove big refrigerator hot and cold water yep hot and cold water toaster oven table two chairs wonderful and this amazing view the view from my terrace which i can sit on my sofa and enjoy i really like this space here it's pretty big and i like it because i can take my salsa classes i usually take here my workout everything like it's so spacious why just sit here and be lazy right i know that's the room this is the room right here i have a queen size bed and as you can see the chest i have something to put my shoes and i have plenty of closet space which that's all i'm about of course you know i'm all about traveling in style so and of that camp i put my luggage usually and everything else like and this is one of my favorite parts it was the the desk because i need a desk for work and originally this wasn't here but the owner was so kind that he put the desk here and when you come this way this is the bathroom like they say you can take a garage new york but you can never take new york out of that girl and that's why you see my curtain and here is the shower it has very good pressure uh which i love and it goes to the outdoors here also yeah i have another door i like this because when i had guests here they could go straight to the bathroom and i think that's perfect when you have guests over awesome okay i love i have an outdoor couch so this is pretty much my living room and you know what's the best part that view right there i'm so blessed that i get to wake up to see this every single day i even see it from the kitchen and even from the bedroom when i have my curtains open the trip up the hill pays off when you get to use the apartment's rooftop first look at the pool right here and then i can lay down to tell the sun bed and another thing i love is uh here as you can see there is a table with chairs and umbrellas so i i host here some wine tasting parties with friends and here's plenty of space for dancing so i hosted here some south dancing partners with this view and the night view here is just amazing if you don't have a friend like olga that host latin dance parties on a rooftop you can always go dancing at la bodaguita del medio just a few blocks away on the melakon in central vallarta i just love laying down here to watch the sunset and to be here and check out this view tell me one other thing too you found this off season right i found this no i actually found this in high season which is kind of even the most crazy part i found that just when high season was starting at the beginning like i moved here on november 2nd and that's when high season star and i just find that like i just found it like the week before which is already considered high season another one of my favorite things about this apartment is that it's so so close from the beach i mean and from the malecon like i'm here like four or five blocks away so it's super close to walk there walk around the malecon at nighttime just enjoy the sunset by the ocean and all the restaurants are pretty much here sasha and rachel are online english teachers and travel bloggers they are currently living in puerto vallarta on a budget of about 2 500 us dollars for both of them we live one block away from the ocean our roof has not one but two infinity pools and a gym that's open and asana so we're in the north hotel zone um this is a pretty new condo building i want to say it's only been open and lived in for about a year we found it from a post in a facebook group and so once we checked out the apartment and especially the rooftop yeah we realized oh and we're block away from the beach uh we should probably just go ahead and give you the deposit tomorrow so you said it's about a thousand us dollars a month so that includes basically everything it includes super fast wi-fi it includes the water gas and we're supposed to pay for the electricity we just got the first bill for the two full months that we were here our power bill was like 350 pesos not very much for two months we have not been using the air conditioning that's what it is it's winter and we just open the doors you know let the nice freeze come in this is the foyer i suppose you can call it here we've got the kitchen here on the right and it's a fully equipped kitchen which is not always common in mexico we actually have an oven and a dishwasher which we're very excited to have because those are the two most uncommon things but then here in the living room uh this apartment came furnished which is really nice uh these nice couches were here all of this nice furniture was here we've got the it's great for an afternoon siesta um we've got the nice breakfast bar here where we sometimes work but the balcony is definitely the best part because we have this amazing mountain view here where we can actually see the depth of the mountain range and then the ocean is right here and then there's downtown through the buildings there so the view is definitely the selling point here another exciting feature of this condo is that it has two full bathrooms so the second bathroom is here it also comes with a two in one washer dryer which i was particularly excited about because i prefer doing my own laundry and this is another uncommon thing in apartments in mexico uh moving right along we just have one bedroom here and this is it nice big king size bed nice closet space very high ceilings yes very high ceilings and then the master bathroom is here and what do you pay for rent here right now we're paying 20 000 pesos a month which works out to about a thousand us dollars depending on the exchange rate but that's actually kind of a steal being that we are in the middle of a pandemic we got a good deal for those of you coming down to mexico for the high season and only staying for the winter months you can expect to pay a premium for your rental it really depends on the area you're looking for it's very easy to find something under a thousand dollars a month within this area uh the place where now in marina valley is really more of an upscale luxury area so you know prices are are a bit more expensive this place i think is about 2 800 a month the neat thing is i'm sure a lot of you already know this hack if you're living in mexico especially during this time if you're if you're here you can usually negotiate a lower rate if you either pay them in cash or pay them directly so sometimes the rates are negotiable once you get here my friend francine gets by on a very modest budget you can check out her complete video on this channel my rent is amazing i pay 9 000 pesos a month for this amazing space it's totally safe and secure and it includes all utilities gas electric internet water so it's a one payment a month and that's it it is a deal and there are many deals around you just have to be willing to search them out my monthly budget is around 425 for the rent um i spend about 50 a week on food i don't have to have a health insurance i worked for a nonprofit and they provided health insurance for life because i worked in a lot of third world countries so i'm well under a thousand dollars a month i want for nothing i go where i want to go i eat out i meet friends i go to the theater here it's easy to do it under a thousand dollars a month the cost of living for a snowbird living in the city center during the high season and eating out all their meals at restaurants is about eighteen hundred dollars per month the average cost of living for an expat with a year lease and cooking some meals to save money is about twelve to fourteen hundred dollars per month basic utilities including electricity heating cooling water and garbage pickup for a 900 square foot apartment are about 32 dollars per month internet and cable tv is about twenty five dollars a month a fitness club monthly membership for one adult is about thirty two dollars per month smartphone service for two phones on one plan is about forty dollars per month one note on utilities electricity can be high in mexico and air conditioning is not needed most of the year during the hot summer months it may be a necessity it's common to have separate ac units in the bedrooms and living area and people will often only cool their sleeping area or whichever area they are using at the time if you cool your whole house 24 hours a day you may be in for a big utility bill for shopping walmart and costco have many familiar items with prices similar to what you would expect to pay in the u.s or canada there are several shopping malls around with many name brand stores food items are available at large grocery stores that have a great selection meat and produce are likely to be less than what you would pay in the u.s or canada while some import items may be more you can find some great deals at local meat and seafood stores this red snapper how much 130 per kilo local markets are a great place to pick up fresh fruit and produce okay so i just got back from the little market and i got all of these veggies for 100 pesos i got broccoli i got cucumber oranges fashion fruit banana i got lemon and zucchini restaurant prices can vary a lot a meal at an inexpensive restaurant including a drink is about four dollars while a nice meal at a mid-level restaurant will be about ten to twelve dollars a pint of domestic beer is about a dollar fifty and a regular cappuccino is about two dollars and forty cents here are some examples the isla de marin is one of my favorite places for fresh fish i got the mahi mahi filet and garlic butter sauce and octopus in spicy with sauce vegetables and bread they came to 180 pesos so these are shrimp fried shrimp these are rice and some vegetables we have garlic with guajillo chill fish this kind of fishy dorado this one is a garlic with butter calmate cafe is my favorite coffee shop in town they serve organic coffee from chiapas mexico serve tasty food with high quality ingredients and have friendly employees okay i just got a latte and that was 45 pesos and my omelette which is a bacon ham and cheese omelet is 125. they also have fast wi-fi so it's a great place to get some work done while you're enjoying a coffee or tea welcome to the cafe our schedule is eight to five monday to saturday organic produce very good healthy ingredients just gone the red cabbage cafe is a great example of a quality local restaurant it has a relaxing atmosphere and it's worth taking the time to walk around and appreciate the art they have displayed on the walls around the restaurant most of the entrees range from about eight dollars to fifteen dollars and i'm here with claudia she's gonna sample with me what's this one this is chamorro tomorrow what do we have here this is molecular molecule the menu features dishes from different states of mexico and they are moderately priced what do you think it's delicious the taste of the pork with this sauce is incredible do you remember the prices yeah the price of tomorrow 210 pesos 210 pesos money poblano is 260 pesos 260 pesos and the beers 35 35 35 pesos for the beers since the town is a major tourist destination travel in and out of the city is easy there is a large international airport with plenty of direct flights from cities around the world once in town you generally won't need a car unless you plan to take road trips around the area car rentals are available and otherwise you can take a bus taxi or uber around town you can take a bus anywhere and a bus is only 10 pesos per ride basically from the airport to the romantic zone anywhere in that area is 10 pesos there's a ton of different buses and then you can go even further from the romantic zone down south as far as boca de tomatlan for an additional 10 pesos and you can also go up to buscerius for a dollar twenty feet yeah sayolita for 250 or 50 pesos um so the bus makes it really cheap and easy to get around the whole bay taxis are not metered in vallarta instead you pay by zones prices are approximately a dollar per mile with a starting price of two dollars and fifty cents or fifty pesos when in doubt you can ask the taxi driver to see their card that lists out the zones and prices uber and a similar app in driver are popular ways to get around in driver is great you get to bid on your own price you just need to download the app and you pay in cash right now i'm on the way to the airport and i'm with my new friend pedro pedro's driving me there and my friend guillermo where i'm staying he introduced me to pedro and set me up with a ride to pick up my friend at the airport and it's a lot cheaper than taking a taxi if you take a taxi both ways you got to pay both directions but hiring pedro here he's going to just pay for parking and wait and uh it's a single ride back and forth so a lot less complicated and a great way to meet a local driver here which is very advantageous because then you can use them again and again the same person and have a comfortable secure way to get around town long distance buses are an economical and convenient way to get around between mexico's main cities and tourist destinations for example a bus ticket from puerto vallarta to guadalajara a five hour drive by car is only about thirty dollars by bus puerto vallarta is a popular destination for snowbirds people who move to warmer climates during the winter often retirees from the united states and canada it has a warm tropical climate year round with highs between 80 to 90 degrees fahrenheit and lows between 62 and 76 degrees fahrenheit the dry season is the main tourist season and it stretches from december to april during these months the town fills up with snowbirds and tourists and it can be hard to get a restaurant reservation in the popular areas the wet season is from may to november and the weather gets much more humid u.s and canadian residents can legally remain in mexico for 180 days with a valid passport at that time you are required to leave the country and return to renew your visitor status this is a great option for people spending their winters in mexico beyond that legal residency requirements will vary depending on what type of residency permit you apply for and which mexican consulate or immigration office you apply at let me know in the comments if you would like a complete video about residency requirements puerto vallarta has a thriving community of retirees expats and digital nomads many retirees live in the u.s or canada part-time and migrate south during the winter taking temporary leases the town will start to feel like home as you run into the same faces year after year the expat and digital nomad community is very active with dinner parties brunches beach days fundraisers for local charities and volunteer opportunities it won't take long before you feel welcomed into the community we're at obvi still pariso bird sanctuary in puerto vallarta mexico all our birds here are rescues none of this is for profit puerto vallarta features several top-notch private hospitals and clinics with care delivered at a fraction of the cost of that of the united states visits to a doctor are about 40 at a private medical facility if you're a full-time expat or retiree who settles in vallarta and becomes a resident you can enjoy the low rates of mexico's public health care system including specialist care and dental care if you are looking for a quick medical consultation to get a prescription many pharmacies have an adjacent doctor's office where the appointment will only be a few dollars a great budget insurance option is to purchase a travel insurance or travel health insurance policy these policies are designed to cover all emergencies but won't cover preventative checkups they can usually be purchased month to month and may be a good choice for healthy travelers or expats that have medicare or health coverage in their home country for non-emergency situations cost for these policies will start out at about forty dollars per month if you are young and healthy and about a hundred dollars per month if you are over 55. worldnomads.com and safetywing.com are two of the most popular options and you can compare policies at insuremytrip.com if you feel more secure with a full healthcare plan international healthcare plans are available from companies like cigna global aetna international geoblue global and national policies are available from mexican companies as well expats i have talked to have been satisfied with their coverage and have policies at half the cost or less of what they were paying for similar policies in their home countries my particular policy it's actually a global policy so i can have medical procedures or get sick and be covered in every country that i traveled to except the us i'm currently with the company called voomi they are based in the u.s so your premium is paid in u.s dollars when i initially got insurance i was 49 years old my premium at that time was 1 200 for the entire year and with the 1 000 deductible i think once you hit 50 or 60 or 70 your premiums are most likely to be somewhat higher but for those who do have pre-existing conditions i think you have to bear in mind that the medical coverage here is going to be reasonable but it's going to you know it's going to be that much more expensive if you have underlying conditions for more information about
