yes [Music] [Music] [Music] hello dave and dave is now forever preserved in resin anyway back to the video so you may remember this ps1 from a couple of months ago this is the one that wasn't displaying on the screen and there was no disk spin turns out the display problem was caused by a couple of capacitors on the video output and the reason that this wasn't spinning is it wasn't receiving enough power so the power supply i had was dodgy so i ended the video using my bench power supply it was all working nicely and i said i was going to buy a new power supply so i got me a power supply but i didn't just get a power supply i also got me this to go with it and this is obviously the lcd screen attachment for this so the ultimate aim here is to build my ultimate sony ps1 so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take this apart again i'm going to replace all of the capacitors in here because i did only replace a couple just to get it working and i want to replace them with multi-layer capacitors the surface mount type all right come on dave let's get cracking i forgot to mention i'm also going to install a mod chip into this so i can play region three and backups of games that i already legally own so i bought this little chip off ebay it's blank so i'll need to program it so i'll be doing that as well in this video so let's take this thing apart [Music] i should take this opportunity to thank my holy hand grenade patrons tidder and taylor helton thank you so much guys much much appreciated and there we go there's the board this is the capacitor area that i replaced with this lovely bit of captain tape over it and there's the capacitors i bought to replace them with quite a few different ones in there i created this list of all the capacitor locations the micro farads and the voltage rating now remember you can get anything over and above the voltage rating but it can't be lower than so 6.3 for example you could use a 10 volt and it would it would still work fine this is specifically for the pm 41 motherboard which is the motherboard that i have red gear i mean i don't know if anyone else is going to be attempting this but if you are feel free print screen do whatever you need to do with that so there are 20 capacitors in total that i'm going to be replacing so let's get the old ones off and let's get cracking i'm just going to use some captain tape to tape up all the plastic the connectors and all the various bits i don't want to melt i'm not saying they won't melt but i just don't want to melt them right so i think i'm going to start up here which is where i replaced the the ones the last time around this one here is where i had to run the leg to that point because i ripped the pad i'm going to try not to do that this time i think i'll be able to get these ones off with the soldering iron because this is leaded solder elsewhere i might have to use hot air but let's start there and let's see how we get on easy peasy [Music] i think for these two people told me to just to twist them off i'm a bit worried about doing that because i have done that before in the game gear and i think i pulled a couple pads doing that surely hot air's got to be safer tell you what i should try it shouldn't i should try a couple of different ways of doing it so i'm going to twist one of these off and i'm going to take the other one off with hot air and let's see which one works best let's do our twisting first okay that worked really well and dead easy hmm i might just do that on all of them now no i did say we'll try higher so let's try her air in this one let's put some flux around it now it's higher set to 300 degrees let's try that first and that was also easy and probably less likely to cause damage so [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] right that's all the capacitors replaced i'll just give the board a quick clean and then i'm going to look at doing the mod chip so i've got my programmer i've got my chip i've got my socket thing i'm going to pop that in there nice and then pop that in there and let's head over to the computer and do this so i've got the tl 866 two plus i think it's called and in this software you can choose your ic at the top so we've got pic 12c508a which is what i'm using if it's not that one you can go in you can choose your manufacturer or manufacturing as they call it and then you chip and hit select and then once you've got the correct chip up here hit read and then it will just confirm that the chip that you put in is blank so you can see all the zero ffs and then we want to load up our hex file which is the file that we need the one that i'm installing is the one chip so that's for pal only and it is for the ps1 so we'll choose that hex file in here hit ok and that loads up all the lovely bits of data and you can see it's one chip there on the ascii on the right hand side so once that's loaded up we can go into config and i believe you can change some of these settings but i don't know what i'm doing so i'm just going to leave them and hope that they're correct essentially all we have to do now is hit program and it is going to copy that information over to the pic like that and it's done it's as easy as that it's probably too easy and there is my freshly programmed chip now i watched a few youtube videos of people installing these and it always seems to end up looking like some kind of zombie spider infestation so i'm gonna try my best not to do that eventually i came across a video by voltar i'm sure everyone knows voltar but i'll put a link to his channel in the description but he obviously does this a lot and his method was was much much tidier so strap back and sit on i found this diagram on tinternet as you can see the wires do go everywhere but quite a few of them come up around this chip so i'm going to try and place the mod chip on top of this chip i think with this particular chip that i've programmed the one chip i do need to run two wires down here and two wires to this chip up here but there'll be four around here so it makes sense to put it there and that is this chip right here so i'm going to use my beeping device to figure out where the i think that's the ground that's the power and then we've got a couple of other ones that are on the chip so if i can figure out where the power and ground are on here and then i can run two wires up here two wires down there right so i've got my probe on the power one let's see where it comes up so that one there it also comes up with that capacitor there so i can do it from there or there and let's try the ground that's either of those two all that wire or any of those wires all that side of that capacitor excellent plenty of choices i'm going to be using this which came with my programmer and i can solder the chip onto here and obviously it goes to all of these points here so the wires can come up through these eight holes which should make it nice and tidy and that's going to sit on top of that chip just nice maybe got another wire up here and another one at the bottom which you can't quite see [Music] [Music] hey [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and there we go i'm fairly happy with that i mean it looks a little bit like a zombie spider infestation but definitely not as bad yeah i like that let's just hope it works right there we go all back together now it's time to test and obviously i'm going to test it with barbie racing ride even drawn the the uh the cover down there it's quite accurate i think this is a usa disc so we can test not only backup but the region three element so let's pop this in so far so good yes get in there barbie software for girls hi bobby no thank you right well that quite obviously works with that which is awesome i'm gonna try a different disc crash bandicoot but i'm going to put the lcd screen on first right there we go look at that looks awesome cool let's pop crash bandicoot in huh what uh no [Applause] so the game works but the screen doesn't [Music] i tested this before the mod chip and the screen did work by the way so i've no idea what's going on let's try an original game a pal one because that's ntsc let's try metal gear solid oh it does the same thing [Music] ah but when the game starts it's working so it's got to be a pal ntsc issue hasn't it this screen is only going to be pal and this mod chip must be ah it's not gonna work is it it's only gonna work for pal games if anyone knows if there's a way to convert this lcd screen into ntsc please let me know that's gotta be the problem right that has really done my chips you could have told me about that dave [Music] you
