PS3 Online in 2021: Who's Still Playing and Why?

all right it is finally 2021 and uh we have playstation 5 here but we can still keep doing this for ps3 that's right there are still tons of games that are online the servers are still going so you know what we're going to do here we're going to test a bunch of games see how many active lobbies that we can run into see if we can talk to some people and just see what's up so playstation 3 online in 2021 who's still playing and why let's find out [Music] every time i play gta 4 i'm just constantly reminded that i really would love some kind of modern remake or remaster but we'll check out free roam that's usually where we have players here all right we are in a match with about the same amount of people that we ran into last year i think it was like four or five people per match how you both feeling tonight you want me to get in i'll get in i'm down see that's what i really appreciate about playing games online where there's no communication there still is it's just unspoken you can see when people are friendly and you know that leads to playing together all night friend requests go out and then you become friends for you know a long time i really miss that kind of thing and uh well i guess i only miss it because i just don't play online games anymore but you you see my point oh all right i guess we're just stopping here now whoa whoa whoa this got hostile quick okay let's see if we can find somebody else or another another lobby i see a lot of explosions and i'm just drawn to it for some strange reason so does anybody want to talk or no no i see it's just controlled chaos here all right i will promptly leave the good thing about gta 5 on ps3 is that this is going to be the safest most reliable online game without a doubt doesn't really matter when you're playing this game there will always be a ton of people on here what's going on fellas what's happening how you doing doing all right how you doing good thank you yeah this is like the ninth or tenth lobby i've tried new names every single time uh there's just a ton of people still playing sometimes they use mics you've got a lot of um a lot of activity on here still all right call of duty 4. we are back again this year let's see if there's more than one lobby going on that's really our litmus test as always just how many active lobbies are going in team deathmatch and this is not encouraging waiting for three more players do we not even have a single lobby actually running right now back out team death oh no that's team death though free-for-all oh wow yeah there's like nobody playing call of duty 4. but this is a situation where you do have a modern alternative which is the remaster that has the online component so uh for the playstation 4 version which you can play through playstation 5 via backwards compatibility that is one way where this game has new life nowadays so you don't necessarily need to be playing the old playstation 3 version okay world at war give us some good news here um this game will tell us right away if there are any players because the bottom left tells us how many active players are on right now and not bad actually 269 that is down from last year which i think was um i think 350 or something like that but 269 that's plenty that's that's more than one lobby so hello everybody don't mind me i'm just talking to myself like that's the thing about these videos is that so many people might be in a situation where yeah there's a modern alternative for say call of duty 4 and not world at war but people play ps3 because of the free online they play it because it's a cheap console i mean you might be in a scenario where you're in a different country that has crazy import fees and taxes on you know the new consoles especially ps5 where that's you know hard to get anywhere but you know ps3 if it has support you know people will play hey what up how you guys doing fantastic i'm doing all right it's been a while since i played this game yeah it's uh kind of on its last leg right now hey how often do you guys normally play world of war um i used to play a lot back in the day like normally i only play on the weekends you guys got a ps4s cool you got a ps5 because i don't it's been a while since i used this thing same here it's been a very long time i really appreciate that you're willing to do this gotcha gotcha yeah man no problem if you know everything's legit you know how often do you how often you play world of war um yeah well like i said i'm a teacher so like i work monday through friday and typically i'll get on on saturday nights and play a couple games maybe sunday uh just old gen console gaming is it just world of war um sometimes i really like black ops 2 also uh i'm pretty good at that game too uh but i just flip between those two i don't have any more of my older ps3 games don't have a playstation 5 right um no i don't i recently you know got a you know new job new car so i was like do i want to make a car payment or do i want to get trampled for a ps5 so i was just like now let that go did you try to get one um no not even i just i watched some videos of i'm guessing just people or some bots just buy them out the second they restock so i was like it's not even worth the hassle anything else you think that's uh noteworthy that would be interesting that other people would want to know about playing some of these older games um no it's a lot more fun to play playstation 3 because you don't have those in chat parties where um you can't hear other people talking that was one thing i didn't really like about playstation 4 is everybody was always in a playstation lobby or in a playstation party talking to their friends so you couldn't like trash talk like there was no fun in call of duty anymore because you couldn't rage um but yeah so that's another plus side to playstation 3. i fully expect modern warfare 2 to have good results so let's just dive right into team death and uh this shouldn't take long here we need seven more players there we go hey i everybody want her to never change so uh what are you guys up to modding yeah you hate this game yeah but i'm not really good at games to begin with why do you play because they're still fun i'm just not good at them yeah i know can't resist it how old do i sound uh you sound young but why are you older uh just let's guess i'm going to say 14. oh i'm 13. 13. okay i was close yeah that's what i'm getting my brother's getting off that's pretty cool though that works out good but the ps5 is really not worth it you don't think so you know i'll be honest i'm not even sure if we ever checked modern warfare 3 but we're doing it this year and we will just start with team death and i'm guessing we'll be fine welp we did indeed get into a match very easily and that's good um i don't think i've ever played this one online so i'm very unfamiliar with the maps but uh as we've discussed so many times now they will condense into one mode so even though there's a lot of playlist options here um that seems like a problem but not so much because again they'll all just filter into one section i didn't even realize that but this game does tell you how many players are online and unlike whether it was black ops or black ops 2 i don't know which one had the visual bug but this one seems accurate so 1100 there 700 there 16 there but in total 34 000 online that seems like a believable number and that's plenty of people so you've got tons of active lobbies going i'm playing on a weekend as always for the best results here but even the week day should be pretty good if we're looking at 34 000 for the weekend call of duty black ops 2 a game that i suspect will be doing totally fine in 2021 find match and we can already see 400 in core 150 and hardcore zero in there five and party games yeah everybody's there and they're all in team deathmatch every single person is in team deathmatch that guy had all the time in the world to kill me he just he didn't even care okay so i was informed pretty much last minute that ridge racer 7 actually still works which i am just blown away by because this is a ps3 launch title uh so thank you to the individual that did tell me about this you know who you are but uh yeah bridge race for seven it's a launch title for ps3 still working uh it's the penultimate ridge racer basically on home consoles so there was one other entry after this on ps3 a few other handheld entries but this is pretty much one of the final mainline ridge racer games and it's also one of the very few ps3 titles that is a full 1080p 60 frames per second so uh it's just a it's a fascinating title but it actually is still up so anyway i guess we can just start searching for a room here and um entering room which means that there should be a room and there is another user somebody from france or somebody around frank you can like see that little map there you can actually manually move that cursor wherever you want oh hello how do i i can chat how do i do that it's good morning for you it's good evening for me i am so excited a playstation 3 launch title this is amazing like okay we we don't have resistance fall of man anymore i understand that i can make peace with that uh no motor storm but ridge racer seven okay okay i can i can deal with that i i can't believe this this is happening right now i cannot believe i'm playing ridge racer 7 online in 2021 this is incredible oh my gosh between this and a handful of other games during the playstation 3's launch this was um it was it was full 1080 60 it's a beautiful looking game it really does look gorgeous especially because um you know when 7th gen really kicked off those games got really ugly once they got knocked down to 720 or even like a sub 640p um those games also have a really rough frame rate as well where many playstation 3 games now even outside the fact that third party struggled with ps3 uh even late life cycle ps3 games typically were still dipping you know under 30 very frequently but this is just such a buttery smooth game it looks great good race yeah right dude i just got lucky man i just got lucky i'm sorry i want to keep playing with you but uh i gotta i gotta test more games online i'm not very good at fighting games but i have always had a uh a preference towards the tekken franchise and this game still available so let's see if we can get into a match or see how easily we can get into a match and you'll know i'm not good at fighting games because i have to go with eddie gordo i'm sorry oh boy 1200 wins 700 losses which is a lot more than what i've got so this will be fun if i can get one win i'd be actually thrilled with that okay okay okay okay i remember somebody telling me where if you're if you're like really good at fighting games and you put them and you put them through 100 matches with a novice like it just doesn't matter like the novice isn't going to get lucky like the the veteran will win those 100 matches easily every single time like there's not going to be any luck involved okay i just can't even yeah well at least we uh found a match very easily though that didn't take long at all so destiny is one of those games where it's not as popular as say gta 5 but it's in the same veins of gta 5 and that this is a very popular game with a lot of life left in it so i fully expect that there's going to be a lot of players on here still just that uh well i'll show you in eight hours because that's how long it takes for anything in this game to load on ps3 x gonna give it to you what wait for you to get it on your own x gonna deliver to you knock not open up the door is real nonstop pop up stainless steel i mean there's players but there's not it's not nearly as lively as it was last year uh there's only a handful of people that have i'm guessing light level 40s the max at least for as much content is available on the ps3 version yeah we got a handful of people here nothing crazy yeah i mean i gave it a shot with uh crucible but this ain't happening you and me both know that this isn't happening and when i when i oh wait wait well would you look at that i'm in a crucible didn't think that would happen oop okay okay outnumbered i'm outnumbered i'm outnumbered i mean look at least i'm in here right that's what counts is that i'm playing a crucible match so if you remember last year's video we did team fortress 2 and this time around we're still going to check up on it and i actually reached out to the community directly and spoke with one of the members where they gave me some insight into sort of the history behind why people you know prefer to play on this very vanilla version of the game yeah i think it was 2007 um or around then when i first purchased it i had the ps3 at launch uh i purchased half-life 2. that was the reason i got the orange box i didn't really care about the add-on games although i was interested at portal at the time um so that's what i wound up playing after half-life 2. and i'm not someone that plays multi-player games online so uh i had no interest in tf2 uh but then after having such a great experience with the games i had played on the orange box i thought i might as well give it a try and that's what it is it's a very bare bones version it was the port over from the 360. um the valve was pretty straightforward and saying there wouldn't be any mods or upgrades to the ps3 version they didn't really want to work with the ps3 at all at the time remember correctly um but you know we were still especially for people that would have been you know like sony fanboys were still happy to get it because even the bare bones version is a lot of fun and you know despite it being the most vanilla version i still kind of have the greatest fondness for that version because it's the version i spent the most amount of time with and also it's the least overwhelming periodically you would only have it's been a while since i last played but ec games that would have really bad connection to the point where like the lag would just you know you could run faster than the bullets you throw kind of thing right so uh that just caused a lot of people to kind of give up or kind of only check in periodically and then there were certain people that had connections to ea that were able to get feedback on what was going on and able to actually correct um what was going on by resetting the servers yeah i did actually yeah i bought the playstation 4 played a few games uh including the witcher uh three i think it was um there's some glitches in that too i and one thing that kind of turned me off was just paying for the network um it's not to say that it wasn't a fair trade but you know compared to the ps3 where you could go on there for free um i just felt like that would have been nice to keep it that way i mean i'm surprised as well the ps3 is still going that that game is still going on that console um it's uh it's kind of endearing and uh you know i think it's uh it's really nice there's a group of people that uh have a shared positive experience with uh somewhat kind of archaic outdated console gaming console so i just think it's great that people come together for that new for the 2021 series we're taking a look at rainbow six vegas and uh you know what's amazing about this game it has not seen a single patch on playstation 3 not one as far as i'm aware okay a lot of different modes here i'm not familiar with this game at all i don't even really know how to play it so i'm not sure what will be our best chance of finding somebody oh okay there are no rooms um would you like to join up yeah why wouldn't i there are no rooms oh like i don't know what's the the fan favorite here because that's going to be the issue is finding out finding the room that most people are clustered in if there are people well to ubisoft's credit though uh when looking into this game and many others a lot of their games are still supported between ps3 and 360. they have pretty much everything still running so you can jump into this if you want to should be very easy to arrange a match with uh with some friends but it would have to be that you'd you'd have to arrange a session so i figured for this year we could take a look at need for speed most wanted uh this is a game that we already check up on with playstation vita but for here this is the last major need for speed that was only available on the seventh generation of consoles after that with rivals it also was a cross-gen title so maybe there's people playing on this one we'll find out in a second here find public game all right we're in players oh yeah we're in a room oh look at that we got more people joining too yeah i'm gonna guess that a lot of the need for speed games are probably doing okay um but as i just explained this is uh the last major seventh generation only need for speed title so rivals was available on ps3 and four um if you are interested and at least need for speed most wanted and probably a few of the other titles that are close to the release of this one you might be in a good position doom 3 bfg edition it's still up it's still working but are there people let's check the quick match [Music] um um not looking too good for doom tourney i mean yeah there's no there's not gonna be anybody in there last man yeah doom is up but it is a ghost town i'd like to try god of war ascension again we didn't have much luck last year but we did run into some players we just couldn't actually start a match so hopefully something changes this year yeah if it didn't happen last year it's probably not going to happen this year uh and remember oh hold on those are people oh man oh man this is starting i'm so default look at me i was about to say last year we couldn't start a match um and this game still uses online passes which sony charges ten dollars for so uh wow i didn't think this would happen three really cool dudes and then there's me oh this guy's not doing anything so i guess i'll take him right that's my best chance here no no chill out chill out i got him where'd my other guy go where'd my buddy go well it's still trend for some reason that there's like one player not doing anything which somebody had informed me last time that sometimes people do that so they can just keep the game going which is somewhat understandable but we've got an active player here that is once again destroying me yeah i'm done i couldn't even take care of a player not doing anything i suspect that battlefield bad company 2 is still doing okay so let's see if there's any active games running which probably that's one right there so that's good seems like there's a good amount of people in here which is always good to see the battlefield franchise much like call of duty uh is going to be fairly active so would it shouldn't be too too big of a problem if you want to go back to bad company 2 in particular but we'll take a look at the other ones as well i actually got a kill which i did not expect to do whatsoever there's like nobody here i'm the only one capturing this oh oh scared me dude jeez battlefield 3 still got to be looking spicy right like there's this this game's got to be good to go i'm assuming yeah it's it's all out warfare over here look at this this is it's popping off oh yeah this full match nearly a full match tons of people in here nobody talking but that's all right that was the same experience last year yeah this is more my speed so we'll just pop into this real quick and see how many players there are scoreboard just like last time actually a full match just about i think that's a full match why do i always get put on the okay why do i always get put on the team that gets spanked every time your team lost no yeah no kidding i see i didn't really contribute much so yes it's 2021 we can still play warhawk but even better than last year which if you remember last year we used the warhawk reborn application for android much better this time around there's a lot of options so i reached out to a community member and they filled me in on what's going on with the warhawk community so here's the interesting thing um xlnkai was also what we used right after sony shut down servers and a a few months after you know everyone was using excellent kai for a while and a few months after that this guy's name is uh dominic dalhammer he goes by all hammer and he created the warhawk reborn app which is this amazing app you just have to launch it on either android or you may have some later made a pc and ios version and there's you just run warhawk and you're able to connect to servers with other people running that app but now what he's also done is he's also completely reverse engineered the warhawk servers so if you go into your playstation and change the dns settings you're able to set uh warhawk you're able to see like real warhawk servers as if the game was still running which is amazing what's nice is that it's actually just like the when the game was was running so even the ranks and everything online stats and everything like that has been recreated even trophies are supported again yeah not right when it was released but like i would say halfway through release i i think i got the game used a couple years after it came out and i've loved it ever since yeah i i play with a group of folks that play on weekends um even then i i don't play really every weekend but yeah that's usually when i jump on um but i think that i'm not sure how active the reverse engineered servers are i haven't jumped into like a weekday night in a while i mean i think warhawk is the game where we've sort of the fans have sort of brought the servers back after they after they went down you know so i think that kind of speaks to how how important warhawk is for the playstation 3's history thank you so much for
