so you want to get into PRS you've already looked at a rifle now you got to consider a scope hi everyone it's a 4 gun guy and I just released a video on getting into PRS shooting and some rifle considerations either production or open and what I wanted to do and I think I said it in that video was I wanted to go over the Optics options as well and talk about those you might consider if you're just going to get into it what you might consider if you've been in it for a year or so and you find that you really like it but you started with say a tier three scope you want to move up and uh yeah just some general considerations on scopes for PRS whether it be Rimfire or Center fire so Rimfire you may go out to 400 yards Center fire we can go out to 1100 yards so let's talk about some of those things I'll I'll go over kind of my Journey uh over the years I've got a bunch of Scopes here uh that are very different in quality and tier and price and we'll talk about that and then we'll just have some final thoughts so if you're ready to go let's get to it let's revisit the PRS rules on the different divisions now so if you remembered uh and let's just talk about uh Center fire for just right now remember we had the open division uh and then we had production division which was limited by the cost or the retail value of the rifle and the scope in the open division anything goes rifle or scope as long as it stays within some caliber and velocity limitations you're good on the production side if you recall there was a $3,000 limit on the rifle it was 2500 last year they raised it this year so it has to be a production rifle $3,000 limit and then on the optic your limit is $2500 so part of what I wanted to do here is to go over what Scopes fall in that range if you're doing production and if you've been shooting production and you decide you want to go over into open great now from a Rimfire perspective it's a little different Rimfire open is open just like it is in Center fire but when you get into production on rim fire the limit for both the rifle and the scope is $1,500 so so that can limit you a lot on the rifle you're going to get and the scope you're going to put on that rifle so I think we'll be able to talk about both these areas Center fire and Rimfire uh from a scope perspective uh as we go through it now I'm going to preface the rest of this video with I'm going to get a lot of comments because we're going to go through what I am considering tier one top tier tier three tier two middle tier and tier three lower tier Optics I am not being all encompassing here if you're running a scope that you think is fantastic in the comments below let's all be nice and civil about it but put that scope what tier you think it belongs in uh and the things that you like about it with that out of the way what I want to talk to next is the general consideration for your scope so it doesn't matter if it's tier one tier 2 tier three let's talk about some generalities that you want to look for in a scope that's going to suit you for PRS if you're going to compete in PRS what if some of the things you want to look for in a scope uh one of the top considerations of course is the glass no matter if it's Rimfire or Center fire when you're reaching out there to a 800 900 1,000 yard in Center fire or 4 300 yard in rim fire you need some clear glass optimally if you are young enough that you could see your bullet Trace as it flies through the air then that would be fantastic but my point here is I'm going to keep it simple you want to see your misses that's what you want to see so you want a clear enough glass that's going to help you see the target get on the target and make the impact and see your misses so there's there's one thing one of the biggest elements if you've watched any of my scope videos is the reticle period end of story I think the reticle is one of the most important things in this scope everything else is is the mechanics of it I get that right are the turrets crisp and clean and all that stuff but if you don't have a reticle that you're comfortable with and know how to use then you're going to be fighting that and that's going to take time time off your stage so a a clean reticle with good subtensions half M marks on the on the horizontal or the windage you you'll hear me say that in every one of my videos illuminated reticle doesn't really matter here so don't get hung up on whether it has an illuminated reticle or not um eye relief very good eye relief and what do we mean by that when you get behind that scope are you having to do this a lot or you know kind of find the optimum viewing comfort for you looking through that scope or can you just once you get the scope set up like this Razer gen 3 on my center fire rifle I've got this set the second the buzzer goes off I get behind that rifle my chin is on the cheek rest where it needs to be and I'm right where I need to be behind the scope the diopter that's the back of the scope here right people will call this the focus it's really not the focus but it aids in making sure that your focus and your reticle are in sync with one another because if this is off of your Parallax or your true Focus you can you can miss targets because you think you're looking at the Target here but the target's really over here so a smooth uh diopter operation is great a locking diopter is awesome if you need to have that or want to have that this is a zero compromise scope here it has a locking diopter I've always loved it but I don't need it uh if it's stiff enough that once you set it it's going to stay there then you should be fine magnification uh magnification has really become a big factor here lately most of these Scopes are going to be in the 5 to 25 magnification range that's what that zero compromises the new razor gen 3 here is a 6 to 36 now let's talk about this for a second when you're shooting in a match you will generally have your magnification set between 15 and 20 That's The Sweet Spot that's where you're going to stay uh so the question is well why do I need 36 power magnification on that scope then what well when you're TR your dope off the bench at 850 yard or 900 yard it's nice to have that little extra magnification so you don't need someone behind you spotting but 5 to 25 should be great uh even a 20 power would suit you would would be okay for you because as I said you're really staying in that 18 to 20 power power range turrets they really need to be tactile they need to be when I click this thing up and turn it I want to hear those clicks I don't want this thing to be mushy and if you watch my review of the original gen 3 Razer gen 3 that was my biggest complaint these things were mushier than anything you could almost I couldn't hardly even hear it clicking so if you're out there and your windage is you're adjusting your windage or you're adjusting your elevation and you need to last match I was shooting under a little bit bit I had to come up 2/10 of a mill click click I didn't look at the turret I listened to the turret click click I was up 21 if you can't hear that then that's going to impact how you can run a stage and adapt to changes uh in the environment or whatever so turrets are they locking uh are they zero stop right so again I'm not going into details on all this but the fact of the matter is I'll use this again the razor gen 3 turn it up turn it back down it's this is 0 or 510 below zero but I know it's near the zero that's what counts I know it's near the zero same thing with my zero compromise and you can adjust these to where they stop on the Zero uh why you might want it to be a little less than zero Rimfire is a great example of that you're zeroing your rifle at 50 yards but in some matches we will have uh targets at 35 yards well what do you do now you look at your cestal it says uh 2/10 low now I can go 2/10 down and I don't have to hold so little things like that are what you want to think about do you need it no you don't is it nice to have yes it is right uh zeroing returning to zero feature I just talked about that are they locking turrets in other words on this Razer gen 3 I lift the turret to unlock it then I turn it so if I've got a 3.5 mil setting for a stage and I'm not going to shoot any other targets just that one target I want to lock this at 3.5 I push this down and now if I bump this up against a prop or anything like that it's not going to move that's a nice feature to have it really is do you need it though no you don't so just think about that uh Parallax Parallax in a scope as we talked about earlier is really the focus of the scope so you want a parallax that let's say it's Center fire and our first Target is 850 yard then we're coming into 650 yard and we're ending at 500 yard or it's vice versa what I don't want is a scope that when I sit down at 850 and it's clear but I come to 650 and it's out of focus and I have to adjust the Parallax to get it back in Focus then at 500 I have to do that again and I'm going to I'm going to pick on Vortex again for when this Razer gen 3 first came out that's what I had to do I I had to adjust the parallx almost every 100 yards it was not good the new one that I have mounted here is beautiful uh in fact in my backyard I go out to 750 to a telephone pole I come back to a 400 yard telephone pole don't have to touch Parallax at all and that's the way my Razor Gen 2 used to be that's the way this zero compromise is um and that's the way actually this scope back here that we're going to talk about I just did a review on this uh this is a $400 scope and this does that too 700 to 400 I was it was fine I didn't have to touch a thing so that's something you want to think about as well and then you know lastly is the construction how does this thing feel does it feel like a tin can does it feel like a tank cuz the razor gen gens feel like tanks the Gen 2 was a tank this gen three feels the same way the zero compromise I used to pick it up by the scope which is really a no no but it's been a tank so you really want something that's well built all right let let's get to the big thing here let's talk about the tear and what fall what some Scopes that I feel fall into the three different tiers all right here we go let the comments begin so all right I'm going to start with the tier let's start with the tier one Scopes all right so and I put I put some rough pricing here so these are not exact prices you might find them cheaper they may be more expensive these are some pric this is some pricing I did a while ago so let's see tier one Scopes you're looking at Scopes like tangent Theta zero compromise schmitten and Bender kalis us Optics night Force Vortex now I put these in descending order of price so this is not my this is the best one in this is the worst one that's not how I did these and I did that on purpose I am not going to sit here and tell you which is the best and which is the worst I'm just wanted to put them price-wise in descending order some of you are going to look at the very last one in this group the razor gen 3 and you're going to go that is not a tier one scope it's a tier 2 scope I tend to agree with you but I think for the Razer gen 3 specifically and maybe for some of these others there is a tier 1.5 that's all I'm going to say I think there's a tier 1.5 um the the uh orange or yellowish lettering for these Scopes represents the Scopes that you will see at most matches that I shoot Center fire let's say if I'm shooting center fire matches I'm seeing tangent thetas zero compromises night forces ton ofite forces and the razor either Gen 2 or gen 3 at those matches you'll see some of the others and some of those folks might be sponsored by those companies so they're running their Optics but generally speaking the matches I go to those four are the ones that you see now remember for PRS Center fire uh open Division I could use any one of these tier one Scopes any one of them so you see I've got a razor gen 3 mounted on this rifle I just took the zero compromise off of it because I'm going to sell this uh and for no other reason just because I'm going to standardize on the Razer gen 3 I have it on my uh 22 rifle competition rifle and now I have it on my competition Center fire rifle and I just don't need the zco anymore so with that said I could put any of these scopes on if I'm in the open division remember the production division has a $2500 MSRP limit on it so I technically could not put any of these scopes on a production uh Center fire rifle none and I certainly couldn't put them on a Rimfire production rifle I can put them on a Rimfire open rifle not a production rifle so tier one Scopes you're looking at this and you're you're automatically saying I'm going to shoot open that's what you're saying let's go to tier two Steiner loophole the mark five uh sigu Tango six The Vortex razor Gen 2 there's the Gen 2 Bushnell Trijicon 10mile aflon Optics cronis and primary arms um the yellow again are what we tend to see at the matches the loople uh the mark fivs are very popular the Razer gen 2s very popular and Athlon cronis I've seen more and more of those so those are the tier 2 Scopes now let's look at these you'll notice that with these Scopes literally all of these could go on a production Center fire Rifle right because the scope limit on that is $2,500 so I could literally put any of these on there right so those are some good options for you none of them could go on a uh production Rimfire rifle so you see what's going on here right and now let's get to the tier three Scopes so we're looking at uh the loophole vx3i the meopta Mio Pro Vortex Viper burus vortex Tech Strike Eagle Athlon Aries the Aran EPs and the discovery Optics which I threw in there because I just did a review on this thing and I got to tell you it it really did blow me away so these are the tier three Scopes so if I was shooting production Center fire I could put any of these scopes on my center fire rifle we're going to talk about this in a minute on my r fire rifle I could probably get up to the vortex Strike Eagle and the burus and maybe the Viper but remember there's a $1,500 total limit on a Rimfire production rifle the rifle and the scope that doesn't include the mount uh rails bipods all that stuff but it does include the rifle and the scope so once you start getting up there now you're limiting the rifles that you can get see see how this works right um so you're probably if you're going to just start out in this sport uh you may start with production and you may uh let's go back to to Center fire if you started at production you've got a $3,000 limit on the rifle $2,500 limit on the scope uh and now let's talk about why I would recommend that you go with something like a tier well tier 2 tier three scope this Center fire rifle is a 6 mm BR which means its cartridge is pretty small right this is unloaded it's doesn't even have a primer in it but that cartridge is pretty small right bring it back here The Recoil on this rifle is relatively light uh I can very I can almost uh free recoil this thing so when I'm on a on a barricade or something like that I've got a bag down this rifle here this weighs 23 lb so when I put it on that bag on the barricade it's uh it's um it's pretty much there so when I pull the trigger I don't really come off the Target that much it's great if you're going to be starting PRS and you're the guy that says I want to go out there with a 308 I'm going to go with a 308 production 308 and D well you better have a scope that's going to be able to put up with a 308 recoil right uh so again when I start looking at these Scopes I'm saying something like the razor Gen 2 might be for you uh Athlon I think they make some good uh solid Scopes material wise same with the loop hold Mark 5 so those three Scopes if you're going to go with a larger caliber larger recoil rifle I would stick with that middle tier not taking anything away from the tier three Scopes I'm just saying I think you might get a better bang for your buck with those and once you get out of that 308 thing that you're going to get into and you decide that you want to go to something with less recoil now you still have a good scope that you can mount on that new rifle and it'll serve you well if you're just getting into it and you're going to say I'm going to go with a I don't know six creedmore 6 mm creedmore production rifle that's still got a little bit of a kick to it but I think you could still get away with some of these tier three scopes just do your research look at the reviews have people had problems with them on their rifles uh you know from the The Recoil and banging around remember we're not bench resting here we're moving this stuff all over on a barricade off a car on tires on rocks we're banging it around in Windows so this this piece of equipment really has to hold up uh very well for a rimfire if you were starting off with production you want to consider the rifle and the scope right so let's say that you're $700 $800 into a burgara b114r or a CZ 457 yeah you're going to be7 or $800 into that thing so that leaves you $7 to $800 for the scope which would give you which would put you in this ballpark here with the burus um let me get my glasses back on the Discovery optic here I think it would get you into this aflon Midas the Arin uh yeah I mean there there's there's not many at that level now there's a lot of other manufacturers out there guys I told you this is not an exhaustive list but you're going to want to look at that price range and see what's really going to what's really going to work for you well that's really all I wanted to go over today uh I wanted to talk about some considerations you're going to have some things that you're going to want to think about uh whether you go to open or production uh levels you're going to have a lot to think about well I hope this video was helpful uh I I really I love this sport I really do sometimes you kind of get a little burned out and you want to take a little break and there's nothing wrong with with that but you know when you get out there and that buzzer goes off and you hit that barricade or have to put this rifle on a car or rock pile or where whatever you're shooting off of and you start hitting those targets it's exciting it really is so you know the more people that get into this the better I think it's going to be they're great people everyone who shoots these matches is fantastic and I really do want more and more people to get into this so again do me a favor go out to the PRS website I'll put the link here and in the uh description of the of the video go out to the PRS website look at the rules or if you're going to join some other organization look at their rules what do they allow what do they not allow what's the limits on uh caliber velocity cost all that stuff just get into it it's really fun I would start as I said with the rifle uh video I would start with a production rifle uh or if you're going to go open great start open but I would start with Factory ammo which is another consideration you're going to have to have right what rifle should I buy that I can readily today buy Factory ammo off the shelf for and see if you like it and trust me if you don't like it you can sell this stuff pretty darn fast even no matter which one of these Scopes if I put these on snipers hide uh which is a a site that we sell things on that we can sell things on I promise you these will be gone in a week two at the most uh so don't ever feel that you can't get back out what you put into it you may lose a little money but it's not going to be anything expens uh extensive well hey thanks again everyone for watching I really do appreciate it have some more stuff coming up stage videos uh I'm doing something on changing powders things to consider there and uh yeah just some other some other projects that I have going on that hopefully will come to fruition so I appreciate the subscriptions likes and comments and until next time Shoot [Applause] Straight
