josh and i have lived in the uk and new zealand and while we definitely love living here there are some downsides on this week's video we're going to be sharing with you our pros and cons of living in new zealand and specifically auckland hi we're natalia josh and gaia we're getting ready to travel the world as a family and share our adventures here on youtube we've been reflecting on where we'll end up at the end of all of this so this week we wanted to share our personal pros and cons of living in new zealand there are so many pros to living in new zealand and it was really hard to narrow it down to just a few the biggest pro for us has got to be the outdoor lifestyle we love going to the beach we love going for walks hiking surfing skiing and new zealand offers everything so if you like the outdoors this is the best place to live and it's so accessible the kiwi people are also a massive pro they have a reputation for being friendly welcoming and super chill all of which is true the generosity we've been shown by people we've just met has been incredible from lending us ride on lawn mowers painting equipment and helping us fix our water tank and asking nothing in return which has just been amazing the other thing that we love about new zealand is the amazing cafe culture there are so many independent cafes here and they all serve great coffee lots of them are child friendly most of them are dog friendly and we're big cafe people so we really love it [Music] not only does new zealand have great coffee it also has free healthcare this is something i'm used to coming from the uk and it's such a massive pro it's a shame that it's not something universal around the world but it's a reason that we love new zealand the other massive pro for josh and i given that we have a toddler is that new zealand is a great place to raise a family it's one of the safest places in the world has great education and there are so many free spaces to enjoy like libraries and playgrounds and there has been a huge investment in the playgrounds all over new zealand they're super fun even though new zealand is an amazing place to live there are still some cons about living here the first major con for us about living in new zealand is the cost food petrol housing it's not a cheap place to live the first cost that you can't really avoid is food we're at our local supermarket and we'll bring you in to check out some of the prices i've got a cucumber here it's 649 a kilo and the mushrooms beside me 18 a kilo or for a white button mushroom over 13 a kilo for fresh produce that's grown here 7.99 for these tomatoes this is the soy milk we get and it is 4.79 for one bottle but it's the best for gaia it's worth it for us but it is expensive one of the biggest costs for us and i think for everybody is petrol at the moment it's 322 a liter at this petrol station and that's with the government helping and giving 25 cents off a liter we're gonna fill up the car see how much it costs and we'll let you know afterwards our car was completely empty and it's cost us 188 to fill it up we've got a nissan x trail but that is crazy expensive when we first got here it was maybe 120 to fill so it's a massive difference for a lot of families the average house price in auckland is 1.2 million which is crazy and on top of that the average wage is only 58 000 so the disparity between the two is pretty big and with mortgage rates being between five and six percent at the moment and banks requiring 20 for the deposit it makes it so difficult to be able to get onto the market as a first home buyer so if we think that you probably can't buy a house when you first get here you're probably going to be stuck with renting and the average three bedroom house in auckland is going to set you back over 600 a week another con for josh and i is that new zealand is really far away from the rest of the world our closest destination is australia and that's still a three-hour flight away to get to asia you're looking at 10 hours and to get to the uk it's almost 24 hours of travel this also means that things are expensive here because the cost of getting things to new zealand is a lot and if you have family and friends around the world it can be really annoying with the time difference new zealand has awful public transport unless you're in the big cities it's pretty much non-existent and even when it is available it's either not very regular or it costs a lot the government is trying to fix this but it's not going to be changing anytime soon so your main mode of transport is going to be to drive the final con we're adding to our list is the standard of housing in new zealand things like double blazing insulation and a centralized heating system they're just not standard here the houses are also often made of wood they can be damp they can be drafty and compared to housing standards overseas they just don't stack up the good news however is that this is changing there are laws in place now around rentals having to be of a certain standard in terms of insulation and heating and there are new builds popping up all over the place which are being built to a much better standard new zealand is an amazing place to live and regardless of all the cons it's the place that we love to call home it's an amazing place to raise a family and if you love the outdoors then you will love new zealand and even though we're about to go traveling it is the place that we want to come back to and i honestly can't wait to get that black and silver passport and be able to call myself a real kiwi thanks as always for watching our video we hope you guys have enjoyed this we hope you learned something new or just found it interesting to hear our perspective and we'll see you next week bye bye [Music] and it's cost us a hug and it is seven there's not seven dollars and it was really hard to narrow it down to just a fruit outdoor spaces like libraries playgrounds libraries aren't outdoors they have great libraries they who's they and we'll see you next week for another and we'll see you next week
