folks that's what a beginner versus a pro looks like wow wow that is literally the furthest thing from what i was expecting what would happen if a pro level producer and a beginner producer produced the exact same song but here's the catch the pro producer has to use garageband and the beginner gets to use logic pro in this video we're going to find out make sure you guys watch all the way till the end to see the final results what and you guys decide in the comments whose track you like the best now the whole point of this entire video is to answer the question does software and gear make up for an experience or does experience trump even with free software now the producer that i selected to be joining me in this duel or contest so to speak is dex simpson he's been producing for only a few months and we're gonna be going head-to-head the rules are very simple i wrote a song that's a verse and a chorus it's about 40 seconds long with lyrics melody and a chord progression we have to use those three components everything else is completely 100 up to us for all i care dex could make a children's song if he wanted to though i've heard baby shark so many times in my household i would i would please don't do that all right so let's actually listen to the track that we're going to be basing our productions off of let's do it what's up my name's dexter i'm very excited to be able to to make a track for nathan i know nothing about this track this will be the first time i've ever heard it to be the first time i listen to it let's see how it goes all right i've only known you for a while you seem to really know your style i'm not the type to go all out [Music] i know that you're saying all the right things now but how am i supposed to know it's really who you are i think that you're playing a game i don't know how so how am i supposed to go and level out the sky i'm not gonna play a game okay that is not what i was expecting i am quite excited for starters it's probably worth telling you that i have absolutely no idea what i'm doing i i think the tone of the song the way that i heard it at least is a bit defiant right it's a little bit stand up for yourself i want to see if i can take it in a slightly different direction might make a little bit more of a surrender with this track one of the big things i wanted to do was to start off really simply and then like at the chorus i wanted to just like hit super hard like when i was writing it was like okay we could either go like more of the solemn direction or it could be like more of the kind of sassy like in your face kind of like i'm done with this i totally went that direction i'd be interested to kind of see if it's a bit of a resignation so how did i do this it's not very complicated because i wouldn't be able to manage it if it were the sound that i played you kind of earlier is the base of this song and it is the scaffolding that the rest of it is built around but i knew that i wanted to make that sound a little bit richer and so what i did is i took step effects and so this preset i found gave it a really nice stereo image it was kind of rocking back and forth and so this is what i came up with so the next thing i added was the bass i took a very simple bass sound kind of a feedbacky synth so yeah probably could have done a better job of that but it worked for me and i was happy with it then i needed a little bit more melody and so i took a rhodes some very easy little blinky chords i did a single note and then a chord [Music] and that's the song that's really all there is to it apart from a drum line which again is as simple as you can imagine it is a kick and a snare triplets um i don't know how to quantize things yet really so i just played this by hand and that is all that's in the track the only other element that comes in later when you get to this kind of chorusy bit is exactly those chords that i played on the roads but arpeggiated and then a kind of string pluck synth sound that i came up with so and it gives it a nice kind of richness and that coupled with the roads it's pretty full it has this mysterious vibe that i really liked and it actually really helped my vocals when i came to that part the vocals were a main vocal uh i recorded two main vocal tracks volks vox and vox 2 um because i wanted the chorus to cut over the first vocal i'm sure i could have done that in one track don't know how so i didn't here are my vocals thing that you've taught me uh you know it's a very light revlon but without that reverb it would just be too dry and it would be kind of jarring with my and then finally i recorded some backup vocals um they kind of sound like crap but i left them in there because it makes it sound a little bit more fluid a little bit more live these were just one takes um what you're all about and then the only other final layer that i added to this song was a kind of humming harmony for the ending yeah it has again some slightly mysterious tones to it uh and if i were to turn that off yeah you'll see why that i didn't turn it off left it on so that's the track one of the first things i did was tracked guitars so i recorded this and then in the chorus we've got it like this [Music] so really the way i built this was starting with the acoustic guitar let's get that i got a demo a dummy vocal done and then i moved right into the pre-chorus and the pre-chorus is where things start really coming together i start adding a little bit more i basically added on top of these guitars this little electric guitar thing and then i added snaps in here and that's basically it really what i ended up deciding was that it would be cool to add something else in here and so i added this guns guns i have no idea what this is world stringed instrument it sounds like this [Music] actually sounds really good and then i threw in a marimba with that [Music] and then once we get into the chorus i really wanted to just like slap you know it needs to really hit hard i actually ended up combining three different bases normally if i'm gonna combine bases i only do two in this case it just kind of made sense here's what the base is with just like the kick sounds like [Music] yeah and then um i i really just built out this pretty sweet drum section so you know hi-hat snare claps reversed elements and then what i did is i actually recorded rain stick so i recorded the rain stick two separate times you can see here panned left and right so it's basically playing the roll of a shaker and then i've got these high hats and i use two of them and one of them is panned right one of them is panned left and here is what all the drums sound like together yeah and so leading into the chorus uh i found these kind of toms to lead into that whole thing and that sounded really good so then i also added in some electric guitar just to add a little bit more rhythm and kind of just like a little splash of funk almost [Music] boom and then i came up with this kind of like interesting melody to kind of sit on top of everything else that was instrumental and that was in the marimba and the ghost thing [Music] good and then the vocals you can see all these here are the vocals so i did basically three lead vocals one of them's down the middle and then pan hard right for the other ones sounds like this i know that you're saying and then i did two octaves that were high [Music] which obviously this sounds kind of meh and then i added these harmonies in here which hit a little bit later and something that's worth mentioning is that for this particular challenge not only did i only use garageband but for the microphones i only used an sm58 which is a 100 mic and then for a condenser microphone i actually use this little mic right here which is from a company called toner now um it's like a 70 dollar mic they they sent me this mic to try out i ended up using it on the guitars for vocals it just didn't really work super great so yeah basically try to just really limit myself to only using really cheap stuff okay it's time to listen to what dexter did whoo i'm i'm stoked i'm really excited to see what he did i have no idea what direction he's gone with this let's do it you seem to know your style what i'm not the type to go [Music] i think that you might be the one who breaks it all apart i know that you're saying all the right things now oh but how am i supposed to know it's really who you are i think that you're playing a game i don't know how so how am i supposed to go and level up the score i'm not gonna play a game [Music] whoa that is literally the furthest thing from what i was expecting that is not even remotely in the ballpark of what i was expecting what oh my gosh let me listen that again okay so first of all oh my gosh his voice like wow his voice is good he's got a great voice that's great so first of all dexter you broke the rules bro you're supposed to see the court use the chord progression no that that's totally cool like honestly i'm so for someone who's been producing for literally a few months in logic like in general like like seriously well done so one thing that i think is lacking in this is just drum production i feel like this could have been like really really cool with like drums i feel like that that could have been the one thing that i would have really really been trying to push for was like cooler like better drums like i feel like once this moment hits here i feel like [Music] and i get that he was maybe going for a little bit of a different vibe but i think they would have just pushed the whole thing forward a little bit more so it's not just feeling like this build up is like really slow it's like a slow burn it could feel like it gets there a little bit sooner kind of captures a little bit more attention so dexter super well done for someone who's only been producing for a few months my goodness this is a great great start i wish that my stuff would i would have been a few months if it would have sounded like this drop a comment down below and let dexter know that he did a great job this is fantastic all right so it's time for dexter to check out my track let's see how that goes okay it's time to hear what nathan's come up with i'm so excited and i can't wait to see how it compares to my track i have a feeling they're gonna be pretty different so let's see [Music] you seem to really know your style i'm not the type of that's what you're all about oh yeah i think that you've tied me up your place [Music] oh [Music] goodness gracious me oh my gosh nathan what have you done i want to listen to it again that was awesome well folks that's what a beginner versus a pro looks like wow wow i have a lot to learn make sure you drop a comment down below let us know whose track you like the best and give dexter some love it takes a lot of guts to come on and do a challenge like this and if you like this video
