we are going to start this half hour here with a closer look at the top political headlines this week a lot going on joining us our Deputy political director Avery Harper and ABC White House correspondent Mary Alice Parks welcome to you both here uh Mary Alice let's start with you because President Biden and Trump both of them are on the campaign Trail this week uh but President Biden said that the US won't Supply Israel with weapons for a Rafa offensive so what does that mean politically I mean look he is really getting it from both sides Republicans not surprising I guess they have just been blasting President Biden for this move saying that he is not doing enough to support Israel but the president is also getting it we know from Key members of his own party I'm not just talking about college students and young voters though they count uh but senior Democrats in Congress that are saying they're just needs to be more done to pressure Israel that this is not the way in their view that a modern democracy that values life should be fighting a war I mean it's been since October that President B President Obama I should say came out and spoke out against how Israel was conducting itself when it cut off food and water it's been 6 weeks since Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said there needed to be a seed change that there was just too much loss of life so look we're seeing a lot of Democrats say that it was right for President Biden to make this move and and actually given that report yesterday that says it's likely that Israel violated international law we're seeing a lot of Democrats say that Biden should be doing even more something to watch there Avery let's turn to former president Donald Trump now uh he's in New Jersey this weekend obviously coming after a week of testimony in the hush money trial what impact if any is that having on his campaign at this point well as far as the political implications I think it really matters and depends on the outcome of this case if he is convicted of a felony convicted on felony charges that could be a vulnerability for him come November according to our latest ABC News IPOs poll we asked Trump's supporters what would happen to their support uh if he were to be convicted of a felony 80% the far majority of those supporters say they would continue to support him but 16% say they would reconsider support 4% say they would withdraw that support and that could really matter in some of these Battleground states where this election is going to be won or lost by slim margins and Avery so age and mental acuity that is something that has been a big issue at the heart of this campaign season for both candidates it is now even the Third Party candidate who is getting in on that conversation because of kind of weird news this week yeah a bit of a bizarre our story it's interestingly enough that uh it does not include former president Trump or Biden uh the two oldest candidates who are running in this race but according to the New York Times uh they found a deposition back from 2012 uh where RFK Jr Robert F keny Jr said that a doctor told him that a parasitic worm ate part of his brain and that it caused him some cognitive issues or may have caused him some cognitive issues and so now his campaign is defending his mental and physical health uh they say that uh he is somebody who can continue to run for president they say that he is someone uh for whom uh this cognitive issue was resolved more than a decade ago and for uh the RFK Jr he says that he is uh going to be uh someone who can continue to run for president according to a post on X he said he could eat and this is a quote five more brain worms and still beat former president Trump and Biden in a debate today wait you just kind of chuckled but because like the state of where we are in terms of this conversation is really mindboggling at it really is it really is all right Aver thank you and Mary Alice let's switch topics here let's talk about immigration still a massive massive issue here uh the Biden Administration proposed tougher Asylum standards for some migrants at the border yeah I absolutely top of mind for voters uh Homeland Security basically has a bureaucratic change they're proposing which would make it easier for some immigration officers to move quickly to deport someone that they have a suspicion has a serious criminal history uh secretary of homeless security mayorcas came out in interviews this week and really pushed back on that Republican talking point that the border is open he pointed to the fact that they have deported 720,000 individuals this year alone that's more than any other year in the last 10 years guys wow Mary Alice Parks Avery Harper thank you so much as always and an early happy Mother's Day to both of you as well it's good to have you in here
