all right i've got one thing that i want you to practice every single day there's actually lots of things i want you to practice every single day but we're going to focus on one thing today because this one practice technique is going to cover all the bases it's going to make you better at songs it's going to improve your hand independence it's going to improve your triads your chords and your arpeggios and it sounds amazing so i'm going to play you what the final result is going to sound like it'll be sorta like this [Music] etc okay so that's the idea that's what we're aiming for and the reason that this is such a great little exercise to practice is because it encapsulates so many of the technical elements that should be a part of your daily routine into one exercise so you are really getting the most for your time we're all so busy right so it can be hard to fit longer practices in you're getting a lot accomplished here in a short period of time now we're not going to start there if you are a more advanced piano player you can view that and be like oh yeah i got this but if you are a beginner you are going to want to start from the ground up so number one we are going to look at our left hand arpeggio shapes so what we're doing is we're actually playing through a chord progression using i'm in the key of d here a d minor d major good grief d major arpeggio so we need d f sharp a and d and all we have to do is roll through it like that it's just a one octave arpeggio and then we're gonna move to b minor so we're gonna play b d f and b [Music] and so you'll get comfortable with this shape and then we go down a step to a major which is a c sharp e and a and this is it just feels different under the hands because we've got that sharp and then g all white keys which is uh g b d and g and notice how i always end my pattern on the second to last note there's a reason for that so as you're playing through these you're gonna finish and we'll probably double this up later but for now just notice how i'm not completing the pattern i'm not going back to the bottom i'm going to that second last note and then moving so that's step one so you could spend even you know if you're really new a week or more just nailing this part of the exercise down that would be totally fine step two is that you're going to be nailing down those triad inversions now tried inversions can be really really challenging so we're going to go slow i'm going to give you some tips for along the way and i picked d major for this because we've got that sharp in some of the chords in our progression that's really going to help us to track where we are and where we're going so you're going to play a root position d major chord then you're going to go to first inversion then you're going to go to second inversion and then you're going to go to your root position again and that's really just the foundation of what the right hand is doing in this exercise so you start there and again this might take a couple weeks to master root first notice how i let my hand slide forward don't try to play your your d chord like here because it's going to be really uncomfortable let your hand slide forward and notice the shape is like this so one two five that's important and then one three five the shape shifts a bit and then one three five again so get really cozy there and then you're going to practice that on each of those chords so you've got a b minor next b d f sharp it's a bit awkward so again slide your hand forward if you need to and just really spend time feeling this out getting really comfortable and then you move to a major now the sharp is starting in the middle of our chord shape and i'm using that c sharp to help me track kind of where my hand needs to be positioned it's almost like a little lighthouse or landmark and then we're going to move to g which is g b and d all white keys so that might actually be a little harder to keep track of but with some practice you'll get it and the great thing is that these shapes the way they shift is always the same it's always that spacing of the one three five and then the one two five it's a bit of a closer here and then further here and then one three five where you've got the space here and they're closer here and then you're back to root position so once you've memorized those shapes it's smooth sailing so that's the next step step three is we're going to put this together but very slowly and very simply so we've already reviewed the left hand pattern this is playing an arpeggio and it's moving from d to b minor to a and to g and so we we looked at how to play that pattern earlier like this and what we're going to be doing now is adding in the right hand to this pattern and i'm going to walk you through it so slowly so to start let's practice by playing our root position chord with a d our first inversion with the f-sharp our second inversion with the a and then we're going to line up each of our chords which with each of these arpeggio notes so this is a nice way to kind of get you to where we're going but gradually so the first step being line them up so the thumb here is playing d the five is playing d if the thumb here is playing f sharp we've got our three on f sharp then we've got a here and a here so the hands are matching if you're tracking with your right hand thumb it's matching up with what you're playing in your left so let's do that as we would so we're going to put it together like this it sounds really pretty i'm going to repeat that [Music] now remember how i said earlier don't complete the pattern we're going to move all the way down to b minor now reset the hands same deal do it twice don't complete the pattern move to a so get your shape but if you need to take a second here that's fine do it again and one more we're going to go to g so these are sounding very harmonized they're super pretty one more time and because we're at the end here i want to end on d so stop before you complete that g pattern and you can land on d so that's the second to last step so that's a really great place to just sort of settle in and spend some time if you can arrive there you should be like yeah i got this so you're practicing arpeggios you're practicing triads you're moving through a chord progression so it sounds super musical and when you're ready to really start to challenge your hand independence that's when you're going to play two notes here for every one chord here so you're gonna play together then the left hand will have a note by itself then you move to your inversion together left hand by itself head back down together apart and then you can head back down [Music] and it looks really complicated and it's going to take some time to master as you get more confident you can speed it up and just spend as much time on each of these chord shapes as you like and when you're ready to switch to the next chord remember to stop at the second to last note and reset your hands [Music] i got really creative there i didn't go all the way up with my inversions but that sounded really good so it's okay and i'm just gonna keep going i'll do it properly here i promise and then we'll finish up our pattern on g and land on the d to end that all off so that was a lot going on there's definitely definitely a more advanced step in this exercise and it's somewhere to shoot for because nothing's impossible and the thing is with with triad and arpeggio and all technique practice is it should be a part of your everyday routine because that is what is going to make you the best piano player you can be there's there's just no fans or vets if you want to be amazing at the piano technique is something you really have to be working on so why not be creative as you practice your technique you're gonna find eventually right settle in and this will become second nature and you're going to get bored so having something like this where you can start with a simple exercise and then as you're ready make it a little bit more challenging and a little bit more challenging and a little bit more challenging so that you're never on autopilot you're always fully engaged you're always having to think um it's just gonna make you the best piano player that you can be and then you're going to have more fun when you're playing your songs and you'll press all your friends and everything will be awesome so lots of information there i hope you enjoy practicing it take it slow and comment below let me know what you think happy practicing [Music] [Music] you
