PPA Red Rock Open - Pro Men's and Women's Doubles

perfect year yeah that is the big questions of course triple crown means champion and singles champion and doubles champion and mixed doubles as well as far as the men's doubles are concerned big shock last week with deacon and john's taking the title this week men's doubles completely up in the air absolutely we have seen some completely unlikely partnerships appearing in this utah tournament sometimes the players like to switch up who they play with see if they can discover whether a new partnership will be what takes them to the top we're excited to see what's going to happen out here today all right minute by minute you hear the clunks get a little bit louder here in st george that means more courts are starting to open up we are getting ready for play not quite ready to go live here from center court we will be ready though in due time as we continue to get the courts ready for competition we're going to send you now to three weeks ago at the mesa grand slam the foot going to be an awesome 20-21 thrilled to be joined by dave weinbach here tonight i'm drew vellios hannah john's also helping out and the brothers the john's duo what a show they have put on a little bit of a bumpy road they were frustrated many times they they got knocked down real early on drew and they worked their way all the way back through the consolation round got all the way back to the bronze medal took down tyler loong and spencer smith who we saw earlier for a right to even get into this gold medal match and now they have forced a tie breaking game to 15. win by two nope great attack ball there by jay had been going hard middle saw that and then went behind him down the line back hand zero zero one again a reminder the players will switch sides at eight and that's going to say a lot as well so that's a one zero lead here to start this tiebreaker drew one zero one point two zero one just wide that would have been the shot of the tournament let's watch this again watch how close this is to lane for a winner 202 a quick 2-0 lead here and colin just sitting on that backhand there with a terrific put away and a shout out to these great fans that have stuck around all day long i we can tell booth here drew that they are shivering in the stands weathered the elements big time hearing from the truck that we're down to 60 degrees one two one yeah right oh what defense keep it alive here oh wow that's a tremendous point there by the johns brothers with a great roll backhand finish by the number one world i'll tell you what too colin johns he has been magnificent here in many moments of this match he's really been a rock your brother ben and keeping the ball in play keeping the ball down keeping his dinks unattackable and setting it up for brother ben three two one john's have their first lead so what happened there ben took the ball out of the air and then in his follow through his paddle touched the kitchen and that is a violation that is just like you being in the kitchen with your feet and that's why don stanley called that correctly called that's very tough to catch too it just shows how great these referees are two three one second serve two three two three 332. sign out back to the johns brothers it's always special to win a championship how much more special is 331 when you knew that you had to come back through the losers bracket to do it you had to take the long road to the top of the podium oh terrific second serving i mean that's down wind so that shows you how much topspin that ball had to to drive that ball from below the net like he did go over the net and come down with that velocity illustrates the amount of topspin he had in that ball that'll bring us to four three yes sir four three two in this tiebreaker on the second serve oh ben begged that ball over drew don't get extra credit for catching the ball just so you know three four one the net and then caught ben in the chest there neither team really able to separate here back to another one 4-4-1 here and that tiebreaking game to 15 for one once a team gets to eight they'll switch sides second serve scotland goes upstairs yeah not a very good lobby jay it sounded like he mishit that a little bit and didn't 442 height or the depth that he wanted on that on that lob [Applause] five four two seems like they haven't had many of those emotional points patrick smith and jay de villier really since that second game really went on their best run that third game just never really got into their full stride four five one from jay and pat they're so emotionally invested in this game and really in in pickleball they've both dedicated themselves to this sport and to compete at the highest level against the best players in the world that's really their game when they have a lot of those big fist pumps points those emotional points it's what they feed off of mm-hmm what was called what was called very disappointed himself he's high for him i'm watching zone i watch got a good chuckle from the crowd four five one love how jay leans in at that kitchen line and really cuts off the angle you see that doesn't let the ball get to the side of his body or behind him he leans in and he cuts off the angles and have a reach of about a six foot nine guys four five two you two another lead for the johns brothers yes sir uh no sir ben is come on don't tell him six five two five six one second serve way long five six two again this is a game to 15 for the gold medal and one by two that's in the wind just kept pushing it a little long nice drop there by colin come on point seven five now a little bit of space between the johns and smith and de villier seven five [Music] terrific attack ball there by jay really leaning in and flicks that forehand topspin right into 571 the body of colin john's to get the ball back at five seven one second sir mr third and that by j shaking his head lost opportunity there but i got another serve to get to six and that is not gonna get it done and john's licking his chops at that high foreign i can see the saliva from our booth drew 751 second sir seven five two that forehand really got away from ben that's one of the loosest shots i've seen him hit this entire weekend might be a little show of some fatigue it's been a long time this men's pro bracket started at 8 00 a.m this morning it is now 9 this players and i don't just mean physically drew you know mentally we forget how many decisions you have to make in a game of pickleball on not just you know who to hit it to and where to hit it but how hard to hit at what spin who should even hit it just so many decisions and it's just mentally draining after seven eight matches of this and you know since 8 a.m this morning and that bulge really noticed before i came on to gearbox other paddles change over time they start to slowly deteriorate and at about that three or four month mark just kind of felt dead and then i would switch to a new paddle and it was kind of too fast because then it had to degrade to get to that sweet spot again i've been using the gx5 for just about a year now same paddle that i picked up the first time i hit it haven't switched paddles and it feels exactly the same a year later and that's that's huge [Music] no way she gets this let's go thank you thank you thank you my turn so 8-6 is your score ben johns and colin johns with the lead race to 15. in the men's doubles championship great forehand drive there by jay getting that ball with a lot of top seven eight one time that ball hit john's pedal it actually was below the net wow what defense second serve 782 boy patrick smith and jay de villier these guys aren't really characters they are really fun guys to be around they are and you can tell they really relish the time together and they too you know it's so fun to compete again you know we were out of the game for a while and in terms of competition a lot of guys were still training very hard waiting for their opportunities waiting for their time to come on the court and compete in front of a great live audience a live streaming audience and here on championship court at the ppa another big point another big grunt that's the biggest yeah come on we've heard actually in this game you know right at the halfway mark here in this championship game to 15 and the rate we're going it could easily go to 30 because neither team right now can separate remember you got to win by two yep hey that one guitar [Music] 82 oh here things have definitely slowed down instincts not quite as quick as they were earlier on in the day understandably you've played so much pickleball you've seen so many balls it's late at night you're tired trying to fight through it hey shot by ben really attacked that right into jay's body and tough tough ball to handle so that brings us to nine eight he's gonna two long downwind sign out at eight serving nine oh my god able to turn that around that ball was two feet behind his body [Music] wow come on jay knowing what incredible get that was oh right there the man from putty yes sir tom i'll recall 911 big smile after that point [Applause] it's a rare forehand missed by ben johns that's the shot he actually looks for ten not one and looked at me like he was a little hesitant on what to do with it maybe changing his mind oh and jay's drop shot almost hits his partner in the head he knew he was coming second patrick smith lets that one get away second serve coming up though then a nice run here for smith and devilier he'll want to keep it rolling yes sir ten not two they're five points away from a very hard-earned gold medal if they can pull it off the tension is building drew as we watch these points unfold right now it looks like it's not as much about strategy dave it's just instinct guys just playing the game reacting went here very much playing a factor still moving the net just a little bit oh barely sneaks over the net one of the longer points of the match here so much wind we haven't had a lot of points like this dave here we go [Applause] jay with a terrific decision there on where to put that ball he disguised it well and then he drove it just to the left of the center court knowing that if ben were to get to it he wouldn't be able to do much with it anyway great point we'll step aside for a hydration break amazing job and it looks like we're finally ready to get rolling i hope so our team has been working very hard all day today cleaning off those courts taking care of the rain it looks like we are ready to play we are certainly ready to play you know we're feeling a little sluggish we're freezing the snow was coming down here earlier today so who better to get this thing rolling than our man dave weinbach yes we have a special guest here dave weinbach dave you spent a lot of time out here in utah you're very familiar with this state and this venue talk a little bit about this place well st george pickleball is one of the most uh best places to play in the entire state we're at the southern tip of utah we're only about an hour and 40 minutes from vegas and as you can see by the colors of the rocks here it is absolutely beautiful one of my favorite places on earth to play pickleball right here at the little valley pickleball complex talk about what the ppa is about and what sets it apart uh on tour well you know we formed the professional pickleball association the ppa because we felt that the sport was at a place where we needed a professional tour where we could have you know 15 to 18 tour stops all over the country in fact next year we're taking the ppa international hannah as you know so we're really excited about uh looking at toronto canada and some other places but we just felt that the sport was ready for a pro tour fortunately so many great sponsors have really stepped up to make that happen so the prize money has really increased the pros are excited the senior pros are excited let's get this going baby uh and talk about the stops on tour how many cool states we're going to you did mention that where are we going we are going to so many great states we've already been to arizona we've already been to florida we're in utah now we're going to atlanta georgia after that then we are going to uh in june we're going to uh california san clemente uh we're also going to be in newport beach california one of my favorite places twice actually this year at the newport beach racquet club uh we're looking at uh making toronto happen we've got new mexico so the list just keeps going hannah and next year it's going to get even better folks and how hard is it as a player yourself a pro yourself uh to wait all day watching the rain come down not able to practice or get a feel for that ball uh before the event well each player really tries to mentally get ready in a different way uh a lot of players they mentally start focusing you know two three hours before the tournament sorry i talked to some guys at noon today and they were mentally getting ready to play and here we are at uh four o'clock local time and the sun's out the courts are dry and a lot of these players are just really anxious hannah to get started so uh we're about ready to get this live action going here drew i'm so excited all right and who do you see is some of the biggest contenders in the pro division uh here in men's and women's doubles today well in the men's we're kind of shaking it up a little bit we got uh number one player in the world ben johns playing with his buddy deco bar the israeli and we've got matt wright number two ranked player in the world playing with uh the la man mr jeff warnick so that's going to be a fiery team that i'm really excited to watch colin johns is playing with adam stone that's a team to watch steve deacon is partnering up with patrick smith for the first time kyle yates teaming up with the lefty from provo utah tyler loong so we got some great matches coming on the men's pro and then of course we have the senior uh pro after that where we've got three or four just really high level teams on the women's pro side we got the usual suspects hannah who you know very well of course it all starts with simone and lucy and but all the top players are here so catherine parento is here uh callie smith is here irina uh is here and i'm always of course going to forget some people but jesse uh irvine i can see right here next to the big camera so stay tuned folks because we got a lot of great action coming we're finally able to get going here this red rock open first event ever by the ppa tour here in the state of utah joined by dave weinbach drew felios here and eric lang and wes gabrielson set to take on phil lamaro and dj howard drew great to be back with you uh my friend and we're finally getting ready for some live action it's been a long day of players being patient and waiting so we've got lang and gabrielson in the far court lamaro and howard in the near court players excited to get some exposure here on championship court we're seeing all over the world feedback has been absolutely tremendous over the past month dave as the ppa tournament championship court continues to just blow up and we now do are in one of my absolute favorite places in the world to play pickleball at the little valley pickleball complex in the heart of saint george utah we call it the red rock open because we are surrounded by gorgeous red rock and this is an interesting matchup drew we got the oregon buddies wes lee gableson uh a future hall of famer in the sport of pickleball in my opinion wow teaming up with eric lang former very high level tennis player and they they've played together a few times on tour and they're taking on dj howard from the east coast and phil lemaru who is from the uh the utah area nice crowd on hand here championship court you see the backdrop they have put extra effort when i say they i mean the entire staff here the ppa spending the last three to four hours trying to make sure these courts were dry just cannot say enough dave everybody pitching in trying to make sure that we had pickleball today here on championship court really nice recognition there by drew of driving that ball down the middle he saw lange cheat a little bit towards his backhand and the seas parted oh coming into this match [Music] against uh dj and phil but dj and phil very solid professional players been around the game for a good time so i expect them to settle down here drew and this to be a pretty competitive match have some great points players just kind of warming in and settling in after a day where they've been waiting for seven plus hours to get right here at little valley pickleball complex aside from wind dave conditions over the past month on the ppa tour have been pretty ideal but this much different here this week temperatures in the high 30s probably going to live in the low to mid 40s the rest of the day how does that affect the play here on a pickleball court well drew it's very rare in march in saint george utah to have these 30 degree low 40 degree day and of course i heard they haven't seen snow here for 20 years so when we picked st george utah to have a tournament in march we really felt this would be i mean a week ago it was 77 78 79 degrees so it just you can't control the weather but i can tell you the players are pumped to play whether it's 39 degrees or 49 degrees or 69 degrees and the field here drew is absolutely stacked all the top players in the world are here both on the women's side the men's side the senior women's side the senior men 917 total players taking part really good unattackable dinks right there also fun date because the last few events on the ppa tour we have been set up behind the court right here we're just over mid-court and it really gives you a better idea of the dimensions and the angles these players have to work with excellent return there by eric lang and you know that's a a good teaching point there drew because did you see how deep eric got that return we always try to teach to get the returns if you can in the back third of the court preferably with a little power because that makes your opponent's third shot so much more difficult oh and wes hung up that dink a little high it became attackable and dj hit a terrific backhand dj howard has one of the best backhand attack shots and backhand dink for that matter that we have in all of the game yeah dj who's serving right here announcer is cursed drew that happened a few times down in tampa serving now eric lang 7-1 here game number one first match on championship court this court again covered in snow just a few hours ago and forehand drive there by phil sails a couple feet long commanding lead here by wesson eric here in game one eric lang has worked so hard on his what we call the soft game drew the third shot drops the dinky you know coming from a tennis background the high level tennis players always have those types of shots they have the drives they have the serve they have the return of serve they have the volleys what takes them a while is the soft shots the dinking the consistency of the unattackable dicks the third shot drops where you have to have soft hands and to eric's credit he has worked so hard that in my opinion he's become a top 7 8 player in the world probably the tallest player along with deco bar that we have seen on the men's side yeah and warnick is right in that same category and that's really important because when you have that length and those long arms when you're at the kitchen line and you're leaning forward with that link that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your opponent nice attack ball there by west see how deep he's getting those balls oh and lane got a little greedy on that backhand there but terrific defense there by phil in djing that's what you have to do in pickleball is you have to keep the ball in play and make your opponent beat you you cannot beat yourself in this game with unforced heirs just a little bit along that time you mentioned warnick ward is he will be partnered with matt wright this weekend that's gonna be really interesting to see yeah in this tournament drew a lot of guys have kind of switched up a little bit so uh john's is playing with barr wright is teaming up with warnick stone's teaming up with uh colin johns uh loong the provo utah man lefty best ernie lefty in the game in the history of the game teaming up with the south floridian from fort myers florida kyle yates four-time back-to-back to back-to-back u.s open champion is mr yates deacon teaming up with patrick smith so we've talked about it in our here on the ppa tour we missed you and tampa dave great to have you back great to be back in action here and let's see if phil and dj can settle down here a little bit in game two and try to push this to three games here lang and gabrielson taking game number one eleven two thought west got a little anxious there i thought that ball got a good foot below the tape of the net that's not a ball you really want to drive so you know patience and discipline is such a key part in this game we spend a lot of time us teachers of the game and talking to our students about when they should stay patient and keep dinking and when they should look to attack we'll talk about that as the day goes on here my friend one thing i've learned in this sport and the time i've been a part of it a great tennis player it helps but it doesn't always make a great pickleball player gets you to a certain level right a certain point and then after that you have to be patient yeah the eye hand coordination is the key so anybody that comes from a racket sports background i would say not just tennis uh table tennis racquetball squash platform tennis all those types of players that come from that background certainly have an advantage purely because of the eye hand coordination issue this is third sailed a little long there and that got him in a very defensive spot from day one and a great job by dj howard to really attack that high third shot put the pressure back on gables in there wes decides to drive that third notice to three of the four players on the court going with short sleeves here remember it's 43 degrees when you play when you take the court later today you go with the long sleeves or stay short i start long sleeves and after about five six seven eight points when i'm all warmed up and start to have a nice sweat i take off the long sleeves but now we're getting really technical here drew oh good d there by gableson [Applause] nicely done best point of the match so far yeah great counter punch there by eric zero i'll tell you you do not want to attack eric langs on his backhand side his backhand punch volley is beast mode to use a technical term oh these guys are having fun out competing you know drew these guys just love to compete in in west gableson's situation he lives just outside of the portland oregon area and hasn't really been on the tour for a while it took a lot of time off and uh i was talking to him earlier today and he's just so excited to get back out here with his pickleball friends and compete at the highest level against the best saw the lava tent just a few moments ago folks that are watching there wes made a great attack shot but did you see when phil hit the punch volley back did you see how his momentum was going backwards four when you hit that zeros volley is you really want to get number one your upper body into the shot and have all your momentum going forward zero four one howard and lamar oh desperate need of points here good drop there by dj he's got to work his way to the kitchen line nice bill oh terrific hands there by phil really anticipating well where that ball was going to come back and he was locked and loaded on that forehead until lamaro trying to get his team back into this match you need a against the net eric lang just pounding away yeah you give a high ball to eric lang on his forehand or his backhand and you are going to pay a very steep price a very strong man has terrific length obviously not only in height but his his reach on his arms and the reason that's so important is because when you're at the line and you have long arms like that and you're leaning in and capturing the ball way in front of your body it takes time away from your opponent so the ball comes back to your opponent quicker saw great performances last week or a couple weeks ago rather last event in tampa at simone jarjim's grand slam steep deacon matt wright winning men's doubles terrific win for them in a in a very high quality field i was i was watching you a home game for you buddy deco bar adam stone also a very good showing how about adam stone he was cramping throughout the event he gutted that one out what a fighter he is you know he's such a competitor everyone knows what a great doubles player he is but adam is always healthy and not cramping a terrific singles player i mean amazing seems to be where dj makes a little bit more uh errors is on his forehand side four one just incredible eric and west looking to take game two and finish off this match up and there's a unforced error on the gableson forehand just didn't get enough topspin on that ball four one two four one two now wes recently signing with uh selkirk just in the last few weeks or so so no he's excited about that five one two what a terrific job by west at the line leaning in taking time away generating the angle down the middle beautiful six finish there by the legend wesley gabrielson a little ambitious there by howard you know he had to go a long way to get that ball and then it was such a long reach and then the ball got way below the time he made contact with the ball which of course makes that shot so much more difficult that's going to just sail wide correction call was out side out one seven one seven st george utah drew one of the coolest places in the world to come to a lot of people don't realize what a pickleball heaven this is we talked about it in the opening second serve the scenery here is just absolutely stunning the first time i'd ever had the chance to drive from vegas where i flew into into this beautiful city amazing coming down the mountains oh and then coming through the the valley uh about 20 miles away from here and folks that are watching here don't realize this but zion national park is only 15 miles away from us bryce canyon one of my absolute favorite parks in the world is about two hours from us and folks that have not been to this area get this on your map not just for the pickleball but for the incredible national parks in the area seven one two one gets it into the net really good counter punch there by phil he anticipated that ball going hard down the middle and he was ready with his forehand in a terrific counter attack phil does have great hands phil our local boy right here from saint george played a lot of rec games with him over the years and man he is maybe the most improved player in this part of the state of utah in the last 12 months that i've seen teaming up with dj howard a terrific player in his own right a great coach a terrific ambassador to pickleball i love the value and the energy that dj howard brings to to the game and to the people of the game and there there's an example of the tennis player overhead you know one of my rules in pickleball is if you're gonna lob it please don't lob the tennis players because tennis players all have great overheads that was absolutely perfect seven two one inside out back to lane and gabe gabrielson oh great drop there by wes and that gets him and eric to the kitchen line i was focused here uh the great sportsmanship that dj howard has he's going to give them i thought it was clearly on the inside edge of the basement okay eight two two one of the cool things we have about the culture of pickleball is tremendous sportsmanship we trust involved yeah we just saw a great example of that nice shot that time as the stakes get higher do you think that continues for years to come that's that's the big question yeah i think it will because it's part of the culture of our great certainly is and just a terrific backhand there by phil putting that ball away with that cross-court attack backhand another great one ahead there by dj it's not just the execution of that shot but did you see how quickly he got from the kitchen back those two first steps that he needed to get back to make to be in position to execute that shot was the key there see how phil tried to go over the highest part of the net there and he's going down the line where he has the least amount of kitchen to work with so one of the things we teach is don't want to see too many dinks down the line over the highest part of the net where you have the least amount of kitchen space to work with eight two one inside out back to gabriel and lang three points away taking this in straight games they've struggled serving here over the last few opportunities eight two two great misdirect attack forehand there by howard really caught lang off guard we've seen a lot of the ball skipping across the net rule changes with the lets something you like i do i do like it because it keeps the game going i like sports that flow well too and anything that can help make the game flow better i'm a fan of good cross-court think battle here between the wes doing a super job there see how he stayed patient and he waited for the right opportunity to attack patience and discipline second serve still trailing by six oh great reset there by phil so tough to come back in this game when you're down 8-2 eight two one such a powerful thing in all of sports but as you have seen in your time in the game so powerful in pickleball definitely howard again another unforced error that is these are very costly and now just a commanding lead here in gaming nine two one oh terrific backhand volley there by phil here nine two really impressed with the level of play uh of phil's game from you know when i first met him a couple of years ago here in st george he's worked so hard and i think he's got a really bright future here in the ppa 2 9 1. so great to have a professional pickleball association event here at little valley you know drew this place has so many fond memories from me i've been coming here for oh six years and so many great friends great people you know in all of utah but this southern tip of utah is a really special place absolutely gorgeous in this particular park 24 courts total be playing on 16 here today three nine two the sun coming out just about 45 minutes ago certainly helped in the process of trying to drive these courts or moments earlier i did not think that we were going to be playing here tonight and now the sun is out we're up to 45 degrees and these players are sweating 9-3-1 second serve boy the enthusiasm around the professional pickleball tour is just exciting to watch i get so many questions people all over the country and all over the world that get to take in all these great live action another example of phil being ready with his paddle out in front of his body in that time did you notice when he hit that punch volley he was going forward all his momentum got into the shot whereas some of those earlier today he was falling away at impact with the ball playing the ball not letting it play second serve exactly folks good things happen in this game when your momentum is going forward at impact with the ball bad stuff happens when all your momentum is going backwards once again cannot keep the side out great anticipation there by west expecting that ball going hard nine three one forehand drive another opportunity to finish it off here for lane and gabrielson great poach there by eric on that first ball down the middle which really was the key shot there as the setup shot and then he finished it so well as he often does terrific run i got all the way to the finals second serve i think with steve deacon and a tremendous run that they had very impressive play ten three two point here nice drop there by wes after a super return oh side out i rules on the serve and the return is don't ten three one because the penalty is too severe you must return folks every single time it is a point that is going to do it just goes long and gabriel will stand a late charge from howard and they're victorious in our first match here men's doubles pro let's take a look at the final point dave break it down for us as we watch the replay of this final point here you see wes with a terrific backhand punch drive that phil cannot handle sails long and there you have it the first match of the day here on center court goes to eric lang west gableson so that three or four month mark just kind of felt dead and then i would switch to a new paddle and it was kind of too fast because then i had to degrade to get to that sweet spot again i've been using the gx5 for just about a year now same paddle that i picked up the first time i hit it haven't switched paddles and it feels exactly the same a year later and that's that's huge [Music] [Music] just a jaw-dropping scene here in st george utah third stop on the pba tour red rock open little valley pickleball complex first ever ppa tour event here in st george and our first match in the books crowd is cuddle up here they are massed up as well they are piled in here to championship court great to have you with us watching the best pickleball players in the world compete over 900 players have gathered here in st george utah for this great event first time today we're going to see matt wright who had just a marvelous week in tampa played well in phoenix as well matt right right there all bundled up in the very different conditions as he'll team up with jeff warnick jeff warnock one of the tallest players here on the ppa tour on the men's pro double side cannot wait to see what this duo brings to the court here today there's matt wright he has owned the spotlight over the last few tour events just been sensational [Music] of course lucy kovalova he has teamed up with and and he has just really done great [Music] work so matt wright and mixed doubles usually teamed with lucy kovalova and on the men's double side with steve deacon but now it's jeff warnick we'll see if this group can work some magic here today great to have you with us everybody i'm drew he's connor it's great to know your face here my man all i can say is the amount of work you and your crew put in to get this complex ready to play pickleball over the last few hours was simply amazing yeah it was a lot of hard work from everybody you know we were out here scrambling doing the best we can we're you know i'm really blessed to have a great crew of people that really love pickleball so now it's just trying to pray to hold to make sure these clouds right here hold off right absolutely outstanding over 900 players are here obviously the weather did not expect it to be this cold but it's just incredible how everybody just seems to adjust and hey let's get this thing rolling yeah totally i mean st george it's known as being a desert right so if you look at last weekend it was 75 degrees you know sunny next weekend it's 80 degrees so we're hitting this cold front right here but we're scrambling and we're making it happen and it looks like the fans are having a great time yeah it has been great play that we have seen too we saw it tampa saw it in phoenix simoni jargin on the women's side just cannot say enough about her she's the tom brady right now of pickleball oh totally i i mean it's incredible the thing she's doing especially at her age i think that's a wonderful thing about the sport of pickleball is even though she's aging the way that she plays the game and how strategic she is she's able to hang in there with players that might be a little bit quicker um just because she's a little bit smarter it's pretty incredible if there's an equivalent on the men's side ben john's would be the closest thing to this young man continues to impress what a future he has in front of him yeah i mean it's nothing less than incredible it's gonna be interesting here today um it's a first time partnership between him and deco bar yeah um you know matt he's been playing i mean he's been playing exclusively with matt wright and also his brother colin johns so it's gonna be interesting to see how their games mesh and how they match i mean decl being so long i think it's gonna be a great thing for ben because he can take a lot of the court and never really be out of position you know a great match we're gonna see here as we get ready for austin sveem and eric rosner they take on matt wright and jeff warnick there is warnick 38 years old probably the tallest player on the ppa tour can't wait to see what what his skills offer with matt wright should be fun and speaking of this ppa tour third tour stop here the the feedback so far the results that you guys have gotten how excited are you oh we couldn't be more excited i mean we're loving where we're at so far it's been a great first two stops and we're hoping that this one just doesn't disappoint as well but this is gonna be an interesting uh partnership here between matt and jeff i mean they're known as being two of the more in your face type players you know rowdy like to get the crowd involved and etiquette isn't so much of a priority for these two so they should be fun playing together one zero one second third one zero two sign out i must say also first ever ppa event here in the state of utah hard to believe 0-1-1 your family known so well in this area have done such a marvelous job growing this great sport of pickleball yeah we're we're excited to be here one of our owners actually has a house about 15 minutes from here so he's pretty adamant about getting a stop here zero one two two one two now adjusting to the cold weather too playing this game do you expect to see some players maybe not play like themselves here this weekend and some maybe even play better than we usually see them play yeah i mean altitude um is it a factor you know that's not even considering the cold weather but also the cold weather you know look to see a lot more hard shots it's going to be a lot harder to slow the ball down the ball is hard it's cold it's going to move a little faster it's not going to be quite as forgiving so those resets that we're accustomed to seeing you know you see how quick jeff is right there i mean you can't go hard at jeff some of the best hands in the game right there pretty unorthodox style too i mean he's kind of like a windshield wiper he hits that forehand either side of his body great analogy point what does matt wright do so well it makes him such a great player i would say his mental toughness is something that really sets him apart from the other players his overall swagger and always thinking that he's the best player on the court i mean mindset is a lot to do with matt wright's play i mean he's a great player really good hands can hit the ball hard you know has all the shots but i think that next level edge that he has that really separates him from a few of the other players is just his mentality on trying to win and thinking that he's the best and you know he really believes he's the best player on the court no matter who he's playing with i don't care if it's ben john's or someone else who it's our first day playing he thinks he's the best player out there so much of this great sport his confidence right poaches and it pays off and now a chance to take game number one here 9-1-1 impressive out of the gates were wondering how this team was going to mesh remember you could be two great talents put together and not be a great team not the case here with right and warning definitely a team to watch and i think they're playing for when they play together and jeff is just a different player to play with so you never know who's going to really mess with him just his style is a little bit more unorthodox than unfamiliar to players of all the players you've seen so far and the two tour stops in phoenix and tampa now here have there been any big surprises things that have happened that you really did not expect yeah a few surprises that i had one definitely would be tyler loong on the men's side he's always been a great mixed doubles player and he's been a great singles player as well but his doubles game has really evolved he's a little bit more patient with his backhand dink he made a deep run in arizona um actually beat ben and colin on the winner's side and ended up with the bronze medal there but i think that's a big a big surprise and something i maybe didn't see coming this year 911 second serve 912 and now game point coming up here for right warnick as we keep watching this uh you know partnership over here look for them to go early you know maybe earlier uh than most than most might be accustomed to i don't think patience is really what they're looking for today if they've got a chance they're gonna send it keep playing looked like possibly was a little bit wide warning takes advantage goes down the line with that one and paints it game one 11-1 to right warnick that's a great first game i mean that's what they're looking for they got off to a great lead so matt wright jeff warnick 11-1 convincingly in game number one we are thrilled you are here drew felios with connor pardo somebody that we have seen give the awards after each tournament is over in the winner's circle and mainly it has been simone jardim who has just cleaned up so far on the ppa tour she has been amazing she has i really love simone but i'm hoping to give out another trophy this week you know it's fun for us when we can see some mix-ups um so you know it was interesting to see ben and colin not pull it out last weekend uh look for both of those two to really you know try to step up their game even though they're not playing together you know they're not accustomed to losing but it's been fun i know i'm really excited to watch this second game here um hopefully we can see some adjustments here um by these guys over here they need to try to slow the ball down a little bit more um anything high they're going to be in trouble with playing matt and jeff so it's really key that they can keep the ball down and maybe try to have longer points the points have been far too short and that's advantage for the tall guys on our right crowd continuing to file in here to championship court packed house start of game two times in zero zero two red rock open first ever ppa event here in st george utah nicely done and that's the best shot of the match so far from eric rosner 001. talk about the the awards and the prize money the ppa has been giving out over a million dollars i believe this year it's incredible it has we've been fortunate enough to have some great sponsors really step up and want to be a part of this growing sport of pickleball and we're excited that we have the chance to get back to these players speaking of sponsors one of us our paddle sponsors is gearbox and it's pretty unusual at the pro level to see three gearbox paddles on the court at the exact same time that's something you're not going to see all the time one zero two another look at the point love these fire fights that's what makes the sport of pickleball so great to watch 2-0 lead here so good start for roster and spam that was a great draw shot he was all set up by the drop shot and he was able to come over there and poach it's nice to have a lefty on that side of the court so we can cover that middle three zero two nicest point of the match right there right has the final say definitely that's an example of one team trying to play defense the entire point and the other team trying to play offense zero three one point one three one first point for wright warnock here in game two second match here on championship court first one taken by lang and gabrielson men's doubles pro here today one three two mixed doubles tomorrow women's doubles as well here today it was nice to see um wes and eric out here on tour uh they're hard to get sometimes you know they really pick and choose the tournaments they come to and it was great to see them out here playing again west looks like he's in great shape um you know he's been playing a lot of pickleball definitely one of the um you know old-timers and so it's good to see him out here competing and him and eric always plays so well together three two one inside out here to rossnerdsfield very defensive they've got to be again here second serve look at those red rocks right there right in the background goes perfect with the name doesn't it that certainly does scenery out here is just incredible yeah we're surrounded by national parks hiking known for the outdoors an adventure here in st george definitely invite everybody at home that's not able to make it to come down here next year the tournament will be in march again lots to do as well as great pickleball taking care of it why do you think the sport of pickleball's blown up here in utah like it has yeah i mean utah the sport has really really taken off and i don't know if it's because it's such a fun family game you know uh utah is known for its family culture and family-oriented game and it's just so amazing that the sport can be played at all levels whether you're a 50 year old dad you know playing with your you know 15 year old son whatever it is the great equalizer of the kitchen i like to call it anyone can play if you're strategic and really learn the fundamentals of the game all by himself inside out now to rosner and spiel three three one a lot better second game playing tough making him earn it on the other side of the net much better flow oh look at that two-hand flick right there see jeff just wasn't quite expecting that he picked it up behind his body kind of hit it a little bit last second he flicked it that's tough to do especially on jeff he's known for his quick hands and going hard at him like that probably isn't the smartest thing to do four three two that this time of year rarely snows it did of course this morning and it's usually mid high 70s we're in the low 40s here right now i know it's absolutely bonkers um i was told that it was the first time it's actually snowed here in march in 35 years tied at game number one ball barely gets over the net and there's matt wright to finish it off matt wright so patient and the rain just now starting to come down as conor pardo pointed out fans adjusting though they're not going anywhere right now heavy snow today also seeing rain now here in utah crowded players definitely weathering the elements the staff here the organizers 942. again just continue to do a tremendous job making sure these courts are ready to go oh beautiful shot from warnick as it catches that back corner and now match point from matt wright and jeff warnick 10 42 beautifully done from matt wright stayed with it and right and warning 11-1 11-4 wondering what the combination would bring if that is a sample right there matt wright jeff hornick going to be in great shape moving forward here in the red rock open one more look at the final point brian warnick very quick points in the first game second game rosner and sveam able to extend those points make them a lot more competitive but still this duo of right and warnick able to hang in get the big points when they need it and they rattle off leave it with seven straight right there in game number two to take the match beautifully done from matt wright staying with it oh look at this the match stats and the winners from wright and warnick 13 of them very impressive as they will move on here in the red rock kick some butt on the course and then you come back here and say hey i'm ready to go again simply amazing you're a legend i don't know about that drew but i love to play i love to compete i love to about a 20-minute uh maybe a 30-minute delay here i see this one cloud coming through so they've just announced a little bit of a of a delay i got the badger wisconsin stocking hat on we're staying warm we got the gloves ready to go let's do this ppa style here at one of the absolute best places on earth to play pickleball the little valley pickleball complex here in saint george you know i got to give a shout out to the guy that basically started it all in terms of pickleball in the state of utah his name is john gullo okay john lives here he's got also got a place up north and ogden and also got a place in cabo mexico but it all started with him and his foundation of building courts in the salt lake city area and ogden and he's helped with brigham city and it's really a tribute to him how far pickleball has come in this great state of utah and he's a good friend of mine and i wanted to give him a shout out because i really believe this this facility itself would not be here if it wasn't for what that guy has done for pickleball in the great state of utah i get to play here a lot um in fact a big tournament that we have every year is the tournament of champions we call it toc and that's up in brigham city which is about an hour north of here so we'll be there in august and really looking forward uh to that event that's been a major on the pickleball uh circuit for for years and uh you know the the fans aren't leaving drew they're dancing in the crowd here no they're ready for a huge night it should be a great night straight ahead we were wondering what we were going to see with right and warnick i know you had a chance to catch the tail end of the match that we just saw what'd you think pretty lethal duo it's a very dangerous combination and you know i was talking to jeff and matt about them matching up together a few weeks ago and a lot of us were looking forward to it they're both really fiery guys a lot of energy a lot of verbiage both uh amongst themselves and sometimes to their opponent and to the crowd they really get into it so i really enjoy actually playing with both of those guys because they bring it every time and they have a lot of energy a lot of passion a lot of enthusiasm for the game and i've said to a lot of people they are not really a sleeper team here they're in my opinion uh a favorite to get into the gold medal match here tonight here at the ppa red rock open in gorgeous st george utah so keep an eye on that team all day i have not seen women's pro doubles yet we should see them coming up a little bit later and last week in tampa two weeks ago in tampa mixed doubles and a showdown between wright and kovalova and yet john's and jarjim the crowd was simply fixated on this match everybody was on such a high beautiful beaches this weekend it's home for pickleball and on the final day mixed doubles take center stage stakes are high emotions are pure at ceremony jargime's florida grand slam it is an absolutely gorgeous sunday afternoon here in tampa florida we're just across the street from raymond james stadium at the hcc tennis center we're ready for mixed doubles as 41 courts are full of energy nearly a thousand players at simone's regime's florida grand slam and we welcome you to championship court everybody thrilled you're here drew felios alongside pickleball pro rob cassidy rob what a tournament what an event this has been so far what has stood out most to you yeah energy is the word you you said it there drew uh it's been electric on and off the courts uh the competition is fierce and uh it's just been a great time just getting to see uh the fellow pro players as well as the pickleball community itself just coming together having a great time here yeah we were certainly entertained yesterday by the men's doubles and how about steve deacon and matt wright just roaring through the brackets here to championship court and taking the championship oh yeah sheer consistency got the perfect partner and simone jarjim and these payers also great friends off the court but now it's all about business they want to each win championships and for simone it would mean a triple crown here at her own tournament as we get ready for our first serve of the day simone serving to lucy kovalova a little bit of revenge from last week an opportunity here it's not there for them to have but it's certainly there for them to take as you see jajeem and john's getting by kovalova and right they've been sitting pretty in one half of this gold championship bracket kovalev and wright mistakes as well they perhaps don't play their best trying to get it going here right in kovaleva there's ben john's standing tall uh simone here in the second time and as many weeks going for the triple crown did it last week in phoenix it is on the line here in tampa once again flexing her muscle showing that she has no equal in this great sport right now on the women's side got the perfect partner he's got the perfect game going right now nothing stopping simone one jargem oh a little bit longer it's a great drop that's the kind of the most composed drop we've seen from matt wright so far as he's been really kind of pushing that drive up to this point in this match uh it's a beautiful well-executed drop for a point lucy really moving those feet making those shots nice and clean it's time to work simone as if there is such a thing all right at right that time not expecting it [Applause] and second serve now for kovalova and right trailing 2-7 great ball from ben you know going up into the body of matt wright you know normally you think when you're going up at somebody that they can hit down on you but just comes in so so quick that you know it just catches them off guard and you know use that term handcuffs and to uh really have a hard time getting a ball on that or a paddle on that ball really good crowd here huddled around championship court two partners on the women's side going out of here on simone and it looked like lucy thought that maybe that was out on that sideline looked like it was perhaps a little bit out and that will be called out here so they will get awarded it 3-7 rob when you know the the opposition's game as well as these teams know each other's games how tough is it make it to attack them well here's the thing ben johnson's in simone jardim's plan a is so strong that it automatically puts their opponents on their heels uh making them feel like or even think that they have to do more outside of their own game and once you kind of concede to that mentality that's when those unforced airs come in that you don't normally make because you feel like you have to do that much more than you normally do i mean from a partner standpoint i like to tell my partner your game is enough believe in your game if you want to beat a team like this that you need to uh you need to believe in yourself and that's that's the place to start definitely get you out of your comfort zone that's not always a good thing and there's that atp simone has hit that shot now four times in this duo with kovalevan right give me a technical that was an atp body bag from simone's rd and when you pull off that atp just like that it's almost indefensible isn't it when it's executed by simone jarjin almost indefensible and at this game you know at this level these pros make the impossible happen and you see the atp defended more and more as this game continues to get better and better the caliber of play great angle oh such a great co-pilot somebody's our dean [Applause] the court awareness between these two is just off the charts game point number one that right looks at the score knowing again in a tough position here trying to extend collegiate tennis both extremely talented there's corey carr always a smile on her face one of the most popular players here on the ppa tour and she will team with regina franco a chance to see franco smith right at home she hails here from the state of utah played her collegiate tennis at byu tremendous game all around just no weaknesses we've seen her team with kathryn parenteau over the past few pba events and those two have gone toe to toe with kovalova and with jargim and given that duo all they could handle callie smith now teaming with tarashenko goran carr on the other hand had several partners over the years she did it one time team up with simone but now regina franco going to get that opportunity interesting how all players have just kind of rolled with the punches here lots of one zero two around the complex over the last few hours it is cold out here everyone is wearing more than three four layers hoods up hats on seen some good points here's that one very very close to the graze the line late call but it was in i didn't hear a sight we'll call it in all right hannah love the way you kind of make the rounds and have conversations with everybody within the pickleball world what have you learned give us some scoop here uh well i was talking to a bunch of the guys because uh as we know we've had some very unlikely pairings in terms of doubles partners and some of them were talking about how they feel out here but they haven't really gotten a chance to practice because it's been so wet so that's also been compounded you know the fact that they have new partners many of them and the cold weather i've been seeing some very short rallies on the courts outside of here because um they're not um oh nice shot second serve oh they haven't had a chance to work together too much patience is at a premium isn't it because obviously absolutely everybody wants to blow through their matches advance take care of business side out so coming up next after this one gonna get a chance to see the number one men's player ben johns and then the championships in these divisions will be tomorrow so you'll get a chance to see it tomorrow right here and as i said with colin how's that looking so he's still playing with one of his very close friends deco bar from israel um and decal is one of his partners it's usually colin ben decal and rob nunnery is there is a group of four generally so i wouldn't say this is a wholly unknown partnership but definitely their kinks they will have to work out going second sir zero three two and regina have stayed mainly on the defensive uh no surprise coming up against two amazing players irina and callie these ladies have been doing this for years and they are so disciplined another rock very tough question here do your best with it hannah uh-oh it's coming after this point okay here it comes we know obviously number one player is simone if you were picking a team at doubles team and you were constructing it if you were the manager of that team obviously simone is the call who do you go with that second second lady that second pro i mean so many great ones to choose from but that's kind of how it is simone it's the rest of the field right now who else would you go with uh you're asking who would i choose to partner up with ben or in general my top lady player top lady player with simone obviously if you had to construct a team now oh gotcha best team i mean obviously she and lucy have been pretty dominant together that would be i guess the easy first choice but you'll also see that catherine parento has been having some some amazing results and she is she works so hard she's from canada she lives near simone they recently moved down to naples so that they could practice with simone and get that extra level of pro play off the courts or on the courts but off um you know tournament play and i think that has really brought her game up seeing some really good stuff out of her very promising stuff and she's young so we're going to see her possibly as soon as he gets older seeing katherine taking her spot and i know that somebody's not anxious to give that spot up anytime soon for sure yes four zero one as long as she keeps winning there's no reason to quit absolutely second serve former collegiate golf player i think it's so cool how she has made the transition 4-0-2 into this sport just a great attitude always big smile on her face oh yeah always playing hard side out she is such a sweetie on and off the court no one ever has had anything bad to say about corinne carr zero four one her boyfriend is also here adam stone we've seen him compete um he was in the final in arizona or no tampa in tampa it's great to see them here together they occasionally partner up and mixed as well zero four two and those two live together in north carolina together where corinne is a professor of economics i believe or finance oh nice volley here beautiful toy remember watching corrine couple years ago down in naples teaming up with simone in doubles they were former set partners yes hi you've been around this sport a good amount of time the forming of partners and choosing women can it get a little stressful like it's almost like okay you me you me no okay i'll find somebody else right yes uh choosing partners is is somewhat sometimes dramatic sometimes surprising um and there's definitely dynamics under the surface where you know you sometimes have to tell your partner you know this isn't working for me anymore and you have to know what's best for you for your game what works and maybe a partnership that was working isn't anymore and if you're the person being told you know i don't want to play together anymore that's all part of the game and most the players take that very well and you just mix it up until you find the partnership that works for you 441 all tied up here game number two karin smith exchanging that's not coming back good job by corinne it's tied up at 4-4 these ladies car and franco were down 0-4 they have made something of a comeback let's see if they can keep this momentum that's a great shot i'll tell you what you said perento i like her right there callie smith if i had to take one aside from simone and look at the future i i really love her game absolutely a lot of fire former tennis player and a favorite here in st george of course grew up here in the state of utah you'll notice when she makes a big play the fans give her a little extra energy she needs it too in this cold right now we saw her coming out for game two dancing a little bit for the audience saying hi to her fans four six one trying to work their way to the net so tough second serve four six two they are on the defensive because the other team has already gotten to the net they have to stay back to hit that second ball after the bounce and you can see them fighting to try to get up to that kitchen line and they're really struggling to do that they've stayed about mid court and then the other team has been able to put that ball away that's something that they need to be able to do to win those points when the serve gets back over to them 7-4-1 three-point lead now for smith and tarashenko second serve third tour stop here for the ppa hannah you've seen a lot of phoenix tampa and just getting underway here in our coverage any big surprises that you would like to point out maybe a particular player team so far in this ppa season well it's still early so we're still seeing what kind of dynamics are going to develop thus far i will say this one has been a lot colder than our first two the ball is playing a lot harder faster which benefits different players so we may see some surprises to today or over the course of this event um we'll see there are a lot of players to follow for sure over the course of this tour we have uh 11 more stops coming up after this one yes yeah c and you'll be on every one i will wow 8-4-2 happy to be a part of this broadcast team traveling all over the u.s that's an unbeatable job about to say how can i get a job well you have it all right eight four one corrine and regina have the ball back but they have lost that tie up at four four awesome you see the ladies were able to get up to the kitchen line on that one and take control that point and put the ball away five eight that's a great example too of just knowing when to really turn it up right absolutely it's all about momentum [Music] a little too high cali was able to put it away franco how much advantage is it have a player obviously with long arms tall frame that can stand right at that kitchen and pound away like oh absolutely that's what you just saw out of cali leaning far into that kitchen stretching out she's got long limbs so she is the perfect player to do that irena as well they have the advantage over someone like regina franco her build is smaller and more compact she doesn't have the same reach not much court to attack smith recovers 951 another as much as possible they have run against a buzzsaw here and smith and tarashenko i'll tell you what i'd like to see this duo a lot more often smith few minutes for players to warm up here on championship core that's how cold it is see how these players zero one one points one one one man that one hit wide point two one one excited to see warner freezing i have to say that uh the first match was quite interesting uh but the ball you know it doesn't feel terrible hitting the ball um but it might be a little different pickleball in the sense of a lot more hard hit balls uh the balls break up quite a bit we broke one pretty quickly um but it's gonna be a power game for sure there's no four two one so um whoever can keep that wiffle ball in the court longer um second server with control it will will succeed for sure so the big question is your play has been so perfect so far on this why can't it can it continue can you continue this unbelievable run uh well i hope so i i mean i've been feeling good i i have to say that i'm very lucky because i have great partners one of them out there just controlling that midcourt uh you know and and i mean lucy's phenomenal player so it's been fun um just enjoying myself and especially in the stage i am in my life this is all plus and your partner this weekend so i have the same partners i'm playing um with lucy we've played one man so far playing with ben so that's where we're at and ben here has got a um well not a stranger they're you know really good friends have known each other for a long time look at that so good um yeah so so they they have known each other for a long time since tennis days um but they are this is i think this is uh their debut um that they're playing together you know i watched ben john's play and he's so incredible and all these events i get to watch the best seat in the house is mine so i don't goes a little bit longer what do you think makes him as good as he is oh my goodness there's a lot actually uh so he's not only very athletic as you guys see but he's smart he's a really bright kid um you know he's um on the court he uh he really knows um when he makes a move something he's got intent and uh and he can execute which again one thing is to know what to do and the other thing is to execute um and i think also uh when you think about it his his youth uh does help quite a bit when you can play three events five three two be okay at the end of the week so um where for me i like i said i have him people ask me all the time oh don't you get upset when ben covers so much court it was like wow that's the only way that i can play that much and be okay the following week um so like i said it's just that that definitely helps when you can come back week in and week out and be fine um so yeah and again like i said uh one thing is very thousands and i don't i don't know these guys uh i'm guessing they're brothers yeah ryan gilbert eric gilbert great point there three six one serve here trailing three six one point returns are flying a little bit four six one baseball sweatshirt so maybe he played baseball second server so where are these guys from i know i'm terrible from utah do we know where they're from we need a server four six two they definitely don't look as cold and uncomfortable as ben and echo even though ben is used to like he lives in maryland and i think he practices sometimes on this kind of weather uh deco has been living in florida so he's now spoiled we have oh and that's one thing that i'll say how the drives are going to stop 4-1 because of how hard the ball is oh second server second serve coming up here and gilbert's hanging in we're working on that right now trying to figure out exactly where the comments are from yeah get your team on it yes okay let's go we're having some money no wi-fi here just yet we're getting uh settled here on day one this cold is making 4 7 no excuses let's get the job that i'm getting uh yeah but that's nice second oh great it's been awesome and watching watching the staff with the with the snow blowers and the squeegees trying to get these courts ready and situated and just watching the party knows taking care of everybody it's just so cool i know oh look at that second server i will say too not only were you the star in tampa but your son landon was probably the star in tampa as well i know he was great you know i've only been gone for a couple days but i missed them and uh i huge thank you for you guys uh just allowing him to be around four seven one you know he uh he had a blast and uh i think one of the junior boys told him that when he turns eight he can play tournaments second serve so we got home and we went straight to practice because he's gotta be ready because when he turns eight which is up you know in november tournament time four seven two and you know what we laugh at that there's a ball thank we chuckle at that but annalee waters is not much older now we're 14 years old i mean she's three years she's three years uh older than my daughter because i have an 11 year old so yeah and you know mom and i are the same age we were born the same year play college tennis uh at the same time so five seven where are the veterans on that uh side oh that's a point oh it's cutting a little closer to gilbert's sex system right johnson bar here on championship court great to have you with us drew felios with simone jargem final match of the day here on championship court will settle the championship tomorrow i mean simone how surprised would you be if the gilbert yes you are pulled off a miracle here i know still lots of pickleball to go but the fact that they're hanging in this close definitely raising some eyebrows right now absolutely but i will have to say that um it does take a little while i'm guessing and again this is my educated guess is that these guys are from here um one thing that you can't tell but the fall second server the the ball flies the return miss returns you saw a couple definitely it's like the ball just goes it's two three thousand i'm guessing above sea level so i don't so it does make a difference um and then being colder the balls are harder seven seven one the later in the day the harder the ball is we'll figure it out my guess but again in the meantime it is eight seven trouble not the way eight seven one things were expected to go here on championship court it makes for a second observer people at home are happy and the people in the stands i mean this place is packed 872 they love their pickleball here in utah [Applause] not how it naturally usually is second server seven eight two that's a tough one great serve but you mean that's a deep sort of hard serve can't control the ball as well saw last week ben johns and colin johns flat couple weeks ago in tampa come up just short in manchester colin expect such greatness every event points i mean i think colin has a lot of time called receivers pretty much with whoever he plays i mean that's true um take a quick break simone come right back don't go anywhere jigsaw health jigsaw hell this well what i was saying is that um colin phillips because he's playing with his brother he wants to perform for his brother really truly um and i think that's where sometimes he gets lost in the moment and where he should be playing for himself and for you know him and his brother not just for his brother um but again it's it's difficult and uh together this year so colin will get we'll get used to it these tournaments getting places traveling around can be a challenge you had a wild ride in phoenix i heard to the airport someone told me well that was a fun morning oh that's him beautiful deck over the gilbert brothers here on championship court so a stiff testimony that they really performed well but a little bit too much john's and bar at the end [Music] ben johns comes over gives us a other paddles change over time they start to slowly deteriorate and at about that three or four month mark just kind of felt dead and then i would switch to a new paddle and it was kind of too fast because then i had to degrade to get into that sweet spot again i've been using the gx5 for just about a year now same paddle that i picked up the first time i hit it haven't switched paddles and it
