hello everyone Madison here from RE brushed by Madison and today I'm going to be showing you guys a beautiful Pottery Barn inspired dresser don't worry we're not ruining any solid wood here this is a particle board dresser to get started on today's makeover I removing all of the hardware I add that to a little bucket so I don't lose it because I have ADHD and I lose everything so everything has to have a home or else it gets lost and sometimes even if it has a home it tends to get lost anyway back to cleaning I did use just a vinegar and water solution that I mixed together followed by a rinse and then I got to scuff sanding I used my surf prep sander to scuff everything everything everything once I had everything scuff sanded I went ahead and just wiped it clean and got my home rate super finish Mac sprayer ready to go I saw Shannon by Black Sheep house who actually inspired this Pottery Barn look do this little tape method here I tried it I probably didn't do it right it worked but not great so I'll try again next time while the tape trick didn't work for me 100% this little step here does with the cords I wrap them up like this so that if I do step on my extension cord I don't pull the cords apart which happens a lot for today's primer I use zenzer 123 I was starting here to add my primer on and I realized that I didn't tape the inside of my drawers off so paint could potentially be getting through into the drawers so I just grabbed some delicate tape and I added it to the insides and closed the drawers back in so that paint wasn't getting inside if you want to make it easier on yourself you can take your drawers out and just tape them off and paint them one by one I'm only working in a onecar garage and I like to save space so I just left my drawers in I did two coats of primer sanding in between each coat to get the tops and the sides of my drawers I just block it off using a little bit of cardboard and it works pretty [Music] good to sand in between coats I just used these foam pads I grabbed from Amazon they work great after I had my second coat of primer on and dried I went in with Sherwin Williams antler velvet in my HVLP spray gun I will have all of the products I use for this makeover in the description box down below so make sure to check that out just like I did with the primer I did two coats of the Sherwin Williams antler velvet with a light scuff sanding in between to make sure everything was nice and smooth if you don't have a paint sprayer that is totally okay you can use a paintbrush or a roller whatever you have you don't have to use a paint sprayer to get this look two coats done now you just have to let it dry okay so I have let this piece dry overnight uh it is completely dry good to go all I have to do now is I'm going to take the drawers out I'm going to put them out in my driveway so that I have more space and I'm going to tape off these sections and here's what I mean by that so I'm going to be taping off my vertical and my horizontal cross-sections here when I'm doing the glazing I don't want to get any of the opposite Grain on the other side so I taped off all of my little areas here and I'm going to work on all my vertical areas first to get this look you're going to need the rum decorative glazing Java brown or any kind of wood glaze you can even make your own and a couple of brushes I use a 4in brush or you can use a deck staining brush a 1in brush and then a couple little artist brushes just for hard to- reach spots to finish off the look I use a little blue broom you can get that on Amazon or the dollar store again I'll have that Linked In the description box if you need one so as you can see here I am just brushing up and down again starting with my vertical sections and I just keep brushing until I'm happy with how it lays down once I'm happy with that that look I then go over it with the blue broom again going up and down until I'm happy with the look because this glaze takes a while to dry you do have a good bit of working time but I would say you need to stop around 5 minutes of working otherwise it starts to get tacky and can drag just take your time and work in small sections if you don't want to be bothered by doing all types of different grain patterns here you can absolutely just go horizontal or vertical whatever style floats your boat I think that it looks more realistic and more like the original piece if you do it in different wood grain patterns I just try to imagine which grain pattern would this go in would it be vertical or horizontal and I go with that or I look at the real picture like here and I just kind of mimic that look while taping off the sections may seem a bit tedious and not worth it it is for me I find that it just helps me not have to clean up as much and fix as much I just tape it off before I do it and I just set myself up for Success now at this point I'm just repeating all of the steps on all the vertical sections that I'm working on I add the glaze with the brush and then I go over it with the broom I'll take the tape off and once all of my vertical sections are done I let that dry I usually let it dry for about 2 to 3 hours until it's no longer tacky I have a box fan that's set up on it just to speed that up a little bit more but if you're working in a humid area it can take a day for this to dry I like to let it dry a little bit before I go in with my horizontal sections because if I do get any of the horizontal Grain on my vertical surface I can just wipe it back without ruining where the glaze is now I know some of you are thinking that taking all the time doing this in two different directions and taping off is a lot and that I might be crazy and you might be right but you don't have to do it this way you can definitely go horizontal or vertical over the entire project you do not have to to switch this up I just think that it looks a little bit more realistic but that is totally up to [Music] you you can see here that I get a little bit of the glaze on the vertical section but because I let those vertical areas dry for a little bit I can just wipe it off with my finger and it doesn't smudge the glaze that was put on earlier in the day okay now for the top my favorite part because it's the easiest I take the glaze and I'm going to put the glaze over the entire piece and I go horizontal I'll apply that from end to end and see how I just wipe that little piece of probably dog hair cuz I have two golden retrievers it stays wet for a good amount of time so you have a lot of working time so if you get dust or a hair in there just wipe it out with your finger and get back to applying the glaze for the top I apply the glaze all over the entire top and then I'll take the brush and go from one side to the other to smooth everything out once everything is smoothed out to how I like it I'll then take the blue broom and do the same thing I'll just go from one end to the other and keep working with it until I'm happy with the results like I mentioned earlier you can just leave it like this but if you want to add a little bit more texture you can go in with the broom now this dresser is going to one of my clients who has the matching nightstands IID for her as well as the tall six drawer chest I do a lot of commissioned work I don't do a lot of furniture flips most of my pieces are for client that have sought me out to redo pieces of their own once you're happy with the top you're going to just work on the sides and the front I just take my little 1in brush and run it over and smooth it out and once I'm happy with how it looks I'll then take the blue broom and do the same [Music] process okay now it's time to let this dry and work on the drawers for the drawers it's basically the same process it's pretty repetitive but it is a lot of fun to work with so I take the glaze I apply it to the entire front face of the drawer once I'm happy with how everything looks and it's nice and even I then take the blue broom and go over that again something to have in your hand is a little bit of paper towel or a rag you might want to take that and just clean off the blue broom every once in a while because it can get a little buildup on it so you just want to wipe it off or you can even rinse it underwater now I've had this question a couple times on how do I get the drawers to match because sometimes someone will go to do this and then their one drawer is either lighter or darker than the other one one thing you want to keep in mind is having all of your drawers be the same tone having the same amount of glaze on them so they all look similar I would recommend doing two drawers at a time so you can keep them next to each other and just kind of make sure that they look the same as the others but don't be so hard on yourself if one drawer is a little bit different than the other we're going for a faux wood grain look here so it's going to look different not all wood grain is the same not all wood grain is the same color it's okay if we have a little bit of variation in this end result all right now everything's dry and we can go ahead and top coat my favorite top coat is the veranee satin water-based poly I find that it dries the hardest it looks the nicest it's just my go-to for the hardware I cleaned it really well dried it and used a black matte spray paint because I was not about to go Bondo all those holes and get new hardware once the hardware was dry I put it all back on and here is the finished product after all that work it turned out beautiful round of applause everyone Round of Applause you're too kind thank you if you enjoyed this makeover make sure you subscribe to see more and thank you so much for
