(light music) - What business do you
have in this neighborhood? (siren blaring) - Why is he stopping me? I just left the house. Good afternoon, officer. - Any weapons in the vehicle? - What?
- Illegal substances? Stolen goods?
- No sir. - You're aware there's
been a series of burglaries in this neighborhood. I cut you some slack if you gimme permission
to search this vehicle. When I come back, let's hope you've come
to the right decision. (light music) (light music) - What business do you
have in this neighborhood? License is not suspended. No previous infractions. Driving under the radar I see. You've been driving
around for a while now. What's the deal, eh? Are you really looking for your house? Or are you casing your next B&E? (light music) (siren blaring) (siren blaring) - Wow! Why is he stopping me? I just left the house. (light music) Good afternoon, officer. - Ma'am, license and registration, please. - Sure. What's the problem? I'm sure I didn't run the stop sign and I know I wasn't speeding. - License and registration. Don't make me repeat myself. - Sure. Here it is. - Johnston. Any weapons in the vehicle? - What?
- Illegal substances? Stolen goods?
- No, sir. What would make you think
that I would have anything of the sort in my vehicle? I've never even been stopped for- - Yeah. Likely story. You're aware there's been
a series of burglaries in this neighborhood
in the past few months. - No, officer. I wasn't aware. I just moved here a few weeks ago when my husband got his new job. I haven't even had a chance
to change the address on my license yet. - Your husband's new job. Of course. Wait here while I check your license. - Oof, rude. - All right. Let's see here. Loretta Johnston. No priors. That could just mean she's really good at not getting caught. Oh, come on. She doesn't even have a speeding ticket? No one's this clean unless
they're hiding something big. Should have changed your address, Loretta. (light music) Ma'am, you're aware that you
only have 10 calendar days to change the address on your license? - No, I wasn't aware, but I did make an appointment
for next week at the DMV. I couldn't make a sooner appointment because of the COVID restrictions. - Mm, well you realize your
license could be suspended for failure to change your address. Look, I'm willing to go out on a limb. I'll cut you some slack if you gimme permission
to search this vehicle. - What? Am I in some kind of
trouble or something, officer? I understand it's important
to change the address on my license, but that's
a minor infraction. - Do I have your permission or not? You know what? I'm gonna give you a
minute to think about it while I look around out here. When I come back, let's hope you've come
to the right decision. (light music) - Hello? Hi honey. I'm in the middle of a weird situation. A cop pulled me over
and gave me an ultimatum that I either allow him to search the car or either he's gonna give me a hard time for failing to change the
address on my license. I know. That's what I told him. Honey, are you home? Yes. I'm on the south block of our street. Please come. Yes, babe. Hurry. (officer knocking) - Step outta the vehicle. (light music) I'm done playing around with you. - I beg your pardon. What's going on here? - Hey, hey Deputy, I'm actually
really glad to see you. I was just about to call for backup. We always appreciate the
help from another department. - What exactly do you
need help with, officer? - Well, sir, I don't know if
you're aware or not, Deputy, but there's been a series of burglaries in this neighborhood. - That's Sheriff.
- Pardon? - Sheriff. Sheriff Dale Johnston. - Sheriff, I'm so sorry.
I meant no disrespect. I wasn't aware. - You certainly meant all
the disrespect you showed me. - Ma'am, quiet. I'll be
with you in a second. - What are you doing, son? You're making a complete
fool of yourself out here. - No, well, Sheriff, there's been a series of burglaries in the neighborhood. - And what? You decide you can pull
over the first Black woman you see driving through the neighborhood and you pin everything on her? That's real slick police work. - It's not like that, Sheriff. I've never seen this car before so I became suspicious. And she doesn't fit the profile of anybody that normally
lives around here. - She doesn't fit the
profile because she's Black. - Well, yeah, I mean, no. No, no, no. It's not like that. - Lori, honey, you go on home. I'll be home in a couple minutes just as soon as I finish with this clam. - Okay. Don't stay too long. Don't forget about our dinner date with the Commissioner. - Don't worry honey. I'll be there. (light music) Now, are we done here? - Look, Sheriff. I meant
no disrespect or harm. I wasn't trying to cause any trouble. I was just following protocol. - Protocol. Look, don't stand there and
tell me that your action was anything less than disgraceful. You racially profiled my
wife, a law abiding citizen. That woman hasn't even
gotten a parking ticket. - Look, I didn't mean to do that. I didn't know she was your wife. - Oh, I'm sure that thought
never crossed your mind. A Black woman with a white man. - No. Look, Sheriff, it's not like that. You seem mad. You're gonna
write a report, aren't you? I'm already in hot water
for another infraction. I really can't afford to
get in any more trouble for- - Oh, don't worry, son. Tomorrow your sergeant will know all about your little infraction. - Look, I was only trying to
keep the neighborhood safe. I had nothing but good intentions. - Oh, I'm sure you're
loaded with good intentions. You know, Captain Porter told
me some interesting things about you, but I held my
tongue until we hired you. You got two strikes against you. - What do you mean two strikes? - Well, you had one when you came in and now you've got another. You're on thin ice, son. - Are we talking about hockey or baseball? - One more remark like that and I'll have you on patrol duty. You'll be sweeping the streets. Is that clear? - Crystal. - Good day, Officer - Day, sir. (light music) (upbeat music)
