I went to the county and got this job fully permitted that's 50 feet [Applause] Welcome to our latest project we're building our Dream born so this will be another budget-focused build but we're also going to have a lot of cool features in this Barn including some animal stalls a hay loft a workout area and a lot of storage and of course per usual I'll share it all the building details and the costs along the way now we have a lot of work to do let's get started the first step to this project is going to be getting a rough layout so I'm going two foot over on my size the width and the length once the pad is done then we'll have a little bit of room to play and twist and line the barn up with our house or however we decide to locate it so first up is get this topsoil off the pad thank you that's 50 feet good job dude good job all right there's a lot of different ways to strip topsoil but I don't have a skid steer I just have a tractor with a tiller so that's what we used until the top four inches now I'm gonna put a box plate on scrape all the stuff off and then we'll kind of be able to judge how much filter we have to bring in because we can't build the barn right on this topsoil foreign [Applause] top soil and organic material is removed as you can see we started exposing this kind of clay Sandy material that packs down pretty good and then we'll just start putting the fill dirt on top smoothing it all out and we will be ready to go all right [Applause] we brought in eight loads of dirt now what we did is pulled off all the topsoil we had about eight to ten inches of this this is really kind of brown organic matter this is a piece that's dried out and all this organic matter eventually will break down and just become soft so that's why you really have to rip all the topsoil off and replace it with Filter this is the filter that we brought in eight loads of it it is more of a clay based as you can see it sticks together this will just make for a much more permanent and long lasting structure for your pad so now that the pad's done now we're going to start pulling our lines so I'm going to set my corner pins square up the back of my shop and then I will Mark our constant line for the barn our constant line is going to be the front of the barn that's what I'll square with the back of the shop so here's a string I pull from the back of the barn pretty simple you measure off any kind of structure you want make sure that Line's square that line is brought all the way out to the front of the barn now to set my first two pins for the front I'm going to use these bolts you can use anything I like using these metal bolts because you can measure from the top same distance off our constant so we're right about 65 and a half here's our other corner right here so 65 and a half as well [Laughter] and our barn is going to be 39 feet wide now I have my two tape measures indicating the corner pin for the back of the barn the first tape measure is going to display the length I'm right at 48 feet my second tape measure I'm going to run off the front corner and this is going to give me a diagonal length that diagonal length you can get from using the Pythagorean theorem and it'll set exactly where this back pin should be that way your building will be square and we will do this on both sides of the back crossing the 48 feet Mark for my length and my number I need to be at is 61.84 so right there is the back corner pretty close and now we'll set the other one we got all four pans set so now the final check will be going diagonal diagonal again and checking that Pythagorean theorem number 61 10 2 perfect 61 10 2. perfect so I got some uh eight and nine gravel that's about pea gravel size I'm gonna spread that you know pretty much where the footprint of the barn is going to go and that'll just make the whole work job site a lot cleaner make a lot easier to work from there so gravel time so the corners of the barn are not laid out now we're going to put up our batter boards there's a couple different ways to do this what I like to do is use one you know four to six foot two by four and set it off on your Corners that way you catch both strings on this battery board from your width and from your length and we're going to make this run right over top of this pin and then one string going to the back it will again run right over top of the pin as well and we're going to do this on all four corners all right foreign we spent some extra time we made sure everything was square and lined up we made our outer Square first which was the first better boards we put up and then we took our Center two lines we measured those out to where we wanted the center post to be and as you can see I pulled back the gravel already and then we laid out our marks for our Center Footers this is what's called a monitor Barn let me show you guys exactly what we're going to be building so this is what we're actually building it's a monitor Barn so you can see it has a center section and then the two shed roofs on each side pretty standard layout I went to the county and got this job fully permitted now what I did is I took these plans I had these drawn now keep in mind these are mainly elevation plans these are not like building spec plans meaning they'll show you your elevation sizes your Heights your widths your Footprints but it's not going to show you exactly how to build it now if you're building a house these are going to tell you exactly how to build it and you have to save those parameters but in our County where we live it's a a very agricultural friendly County so I took these plans to our County to get our permit the one thing they requested that we have is a site layout now what a site layout is is your property layout and it'll show your whole property where your house is if you have any garages I have a detached garage so it's located right here what I did this was filed with the county I simply printed this out and I drew exactly where the barn is going to be built and I measured it from my property lines the main thing that my County was concerned with was the barn being on or close to our septic system or too close to the parameters of the property line distance so we have certain setbacks every kind is going to be different lay them on out and it was completely fun exactly where they wanted it so they signed off on it and then I got my permit that is it that's all you have to do to get the permit and then I'll put this up and display it that way in case the county Drives By they can look in the box and I'll have all this stuff labeled in there and then that's that we'll probably have a few inspections on it they'll probably do a framing inspect section and then once I put a little bit of electrical in there they'll do an electrical inspection and after that once it's finished they'll come back out and do the final inspection and hopefully sign off on it and we have the making adjustments we will cross that bridge we get there and we'll adjust stuff you know no big deal call them back out to reinspect so it's that simple hopefully that helps out a lot of those people that are wanting to do a full permit process like I said this is not that hard and this permit for this Barn cost me right at 400 for my County so it's pretty simple so now we're going to get this thing laid out and we're going to look at our footer plans for this make sure our measurements are double checked and on point and then we're going to punch some holes in the ground all the holes will be dug with a 10 inch auger bit about 30 inches deep and then a 12 inch Sono tube for the top to finish it off [Music] I cut about four to five inch pieces off my 12 inches Sono tube and use those above the ground just to help finish the concrete and then we just had to mix the concrete up I think I used about 28 bags for all these Center Footers this turned out to be a pretty long work day so luckily the family jumped in to help to finish the rest of the holes now to mount the post to the Footers I did use some iron 6x6 brackets and I wet set these using a string line and a tape measure to make sure they were all Center and in line all right [Music] it's the next morning and our post anchors is set up perfectly you can see these are nice and solid in these posts a couple of them are a couple inches off from where I'd rather than be but it's okay so there's going to be some work so I'll put you guys on a time lapse and start standing up these posts hopefully two at a time [Music] the original plan to lift two at a time did not work at all so we went back and just lifted them one at a time and then put braces on them to hold them plump [Music] all right [Music] so the first two posts definitely gave us a hard time so I had to come up with another plan this was my plan too I came up with a DIY homemade boom lift on the front of the tractor and this thing worked perfect it allowed me to get the rest of the poles up way safer and by myself thank you [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] so this is the last 6x6 that we are sitting on a concrete footer the rest of the post will actually be just directly in the ground with some concrete and buried foreign of the post is complete I'm just gonna brace these off take some measurements pretty much make a square box and support them with a few boards going down to the ground now this is the back section of the barn and then there was two posts that we installed for the front between these posts will be some telephone poles and that's going to span a pretty big gap that's mainly going to be for looks and just so it has that grand entry when you walk into the barn and here's a close-up of the anchors that I used with the 12 inch Sono tubes they worked out really great a little bit of extra time to set everything up and make sure everything's good and straight with a string really paid off everything stood up pretty easy Once I figured out the boom lift for the tractor [Music] oh stage one of our barn build is complete thank you guys for watching if you have any questions please leave them down below as always please like And subscribe and we will see you next week for episode two [Music]
