morning doesn't that look good so yesterday morning i went to the farm did a whole bunch of work and then i came back and i said you know what i said i need to go ahead and cut this grass and it really wasn't super long but man let me tell you what the more you cut the better it is so anyways today what are we doing i've gotta pack up quite a bit of gear here we're gonna run over to my daughter's house if you remember in the video i did a couple months ago when they bought this house the backyard was solid red clay then what we did is we came in to get roots in the ground we came in and we put down just a cool season and that came up so now i have roots on the ground today we're going to switch it over and i'm probably going to do zermuta i'm going to plant a mixture mostly zoysia but i'm going to throw in a little bit of bermuda too and i'll explain that more but uh man i i this is just absolutely gorgeous and here we are we're in the middle of a drought and i'm not watering a whole lot again i keep talking about improving your soil today we're going to put down probably a little bit over on hers when we do this seating just so you know uh the product list we're gonna put down uh zoysia bermuda i'll link to the seeds down below i'm using and then we're gonna put down pgf balanced and i'm gonna put down dirt booster on top of that too so hold on here we go okay so in the last video last time we were out here this was solid red clay and i just want to show you after we did what we did we put down human char pgf balance and we put down cool season grass so this is what it looks like now it actually looks pretty good here's the problem and ryan and i were talking about this is the last time we were out here there weren't any leaves on the trees and there was plenty of sunshine so now i'm out here with some warm season grass and i'm like dude this isn't gonna end well so here's what i did i went on my phone and i ordered some uh scott's shady mix tall fescue so we're gonna actually put down bermuda we're gonna put down zoysia but at the same time we've also told them as soon as i leave it's coming in tomorrow they're gonna spread that uh fescue out here we're gonna do the same thing same process but i'm just see what i mean i've got trees all the way around here and what time is it running do you know 10 30 10. it's 10 30 10 30 or so and i don't have sunlight out here i don't know the zoysia might take a little bit but i'm the bermuda's not going to i don't think so here we go okay so it's at this point in the video you're going to say to yourself doc what are you doing you're putting out bermuda zoysia and tall fescue now i've done this many times i did it across the street but if you have areas where you get partial sun partial shade and especially if you have a bermuda they have a bermuda lawn out front i'm just gonna throw out all three seeds and i'm gonna let it fight it out if there's areas there's areas that get a lot of sun in that backyard there's areas that get a lot of shade i'm going to put it all out and whatever survives survives i've done this many times and it actually works out well so you can do this trick so we're going to put out some pgf balance we did these balance before we're going to do it again it's an all fast release well it's about right on the settings about a quarter of an inch we'll start with one bag and see if that'll cover it and the reason why i use this balance it's the only 10-10-10 that's specifically designed for yards for turf because of the particle size so you can put this out at a light rate and it's tiny particles so all i'm going to do today is i'm just going to walk you through basically what we're doing it's gonna be pretty simple it'll be a one two three pass of the pgf balanced and then we're gonna put out a bunch of human char excuse me a bunch of dirt booster we'll put out two bags of dirt booster this was solid red clay and rock so my goal is carbon and organic matter the mycorrhizal fungi and the microbes are really good for seed germination and root growth it's a symbiotic relationship that exists everywhere in nature and you got to learn that people you got to learn the relationship of mycorrhizal fungi and roots while he's doing that let me grab my seed so this is my neighbor's yard um they needed um some bermuda seeds i ordered this and this is the yukon link to this this is the yukon bermuda grass it's a nice very fine replicate sod i don't know that it'll take back here or not and then this is the uh exact same seed this is the zenith oyster seed that i use down at the beach house now the beach house lawn friggin amazing they're just amazing i need to go down there here probably in about a week and treat it but came in so great so next comes the dirt booster again my product choice for 2022 product of the year we're hands down dirt booster plus the dirt booster plus is all in one corn concentrates molasses particles humic acid biochar soil microbes and mycorrhizal fungi there you go all right go ahead let's two bags uh go ahead and put out uh go ahead and put two bags i'm gonna hit this hard with this dirt booster i mean this whole area has basically been nothing but rocks and clay for five years or so ten years more than that yeah probably ten years or something so we've got to get that organic matter in the last video i talked about raising your cec your caddy and exchange capacity and to do that this is what's going to do it this is what's going to bring it up this and roots in the ground that's it now when you're putting out your dirt booster remember um it's going to have less of a throw pattern on the sides than a normal fertilizer heavier third fertilizer so some people ask what's the rate that i put this out it really doesn't matter there's no nutrients so you could put half an inch on your lawn you seriously could so um uh typically i i would say what six thousand square feet per bag of this stuff five thousand six thousand square feet is a normal if you want to do it like every two weeks this stuff you put down during the hot season the growing season so this is where you want to be may june july august september that's when you put down your dirt booster bump up your good soil organic matter your cecs i would not be using it in the off season that's when i would switch over to humatur human charge just basically pumping carbon into your soil this is creating because we have that warm temperature we have the warm temperatures this is creating that living soil where the soil microbes and the mycorrhizal fungi they're all working with your roots and your plant system so this is the zoysia seed now this is the same stuff i use at the beach house and it's pretty fine too it's pretty fine it's like a it's just about the same size of bermuda but this this will do a lot more than what i've got here so it's going to be put down heavy i believe when you've got this bare soil i overseed i want lots of root activity and whatever takes takes we're just going to let it all compete i don't really care all right again i don't use a spreader if you want one of those little wind-up things which i don't have with me normally use that but i'll just do it by hand [Music] all right so i've got uh i've got my yukon and it doesn't look like much does it but man these bermuda seeds are just tiny tiny tiny tintani and i do not use i'm not going to use a spreader i'm actually just going to hand through this stuff so so if you're not used to putting out bermuda seed live action pan here bermuda seed goes a long way i mean it's expensive you may think for me the feed is really expensive like this stuff what 30 30 a pound or something [Applause] but you can see how small it is it's tiny one thing that i'll teach you this is the only machine that i use when i'm seating it's a scarifier you don't want the prongs i covered this before you actually want the blade so there are blades in here and all you're going to do is i'm going to drop it down to its lowest setting and if you put resistance it'll tear up the ground and that's not really what i want because we've already got this established with roots so all i'm going to do on areas that have good grass i'm just going to let it pull itself i'm not going to fight it if i come up to a bare area like this then i might fight it a little bit and stir it up a little bit more since there's no roots to disturb but when i get into these thicker areas i'm just going to let the machine roll i'm not trying to dig it up too much so let me go ahead ryan let me [Applause] [Music] you can see what this does it's basically just churning up this whole thing in here it's not doing a whole lot of damage to it it's not tearing it up a whole bunch but this is what you want every time i've had a successful seating this is the way that i've done it i've put down my products i've put down the seed and then i actually run over with a scar fire and then water water water if you look at the directions on seed i was reading a packet the other day and it said number four do not let the sea dry out in between waterings that's a critical step to understand so we don't have irrigation back here i'm hoping we have some afternoon thunderstorms plus they'll have to drag the hose out [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh man dude that was another long day so let me just give you a couple quick tips number one if you can core aerate before you start this process it'll really help out do a core aeration leave the cores out there the scarifier will actually turn that into a little bit of layer of dirt but i can't we didn't have a way to transport my my core aerator over there number two if you do get an air uh scar fire i recommend this one i'll put a link to it down on the page below but this one has it comes with the springs and it comes with the blades so i have the blades in this and it's important to understand we're using the blades not the springs because what we want to do is we want to cut those little lines into the lawn we want to cut those little lines in the lawn and we really don't want to pull up the existing we just want to cut cut cut so if you can core aerate put down your stuff i always put down my stuff um usually i'll put it all down so i put down the dirt booster i put down pgf balance i'm just light coats of this dirt booster you can put out heavy put out your seed and then do your scarifier and then water one of the biggest problems one of the biggest reasons why seedings fail is because people don't water often enough it's not about getting water into the ground it's about keeping the seed from drying out you gotta understand that principle you have to get try and keep that seed moist the if you can go through put it out right before four days of rain you'll probably have germination in four days keeping the seed moist not soaking wet but just moist one tip i always tell people is right at sunset if you can run your irrigation system or water it right before sunset what's gonna happen your lawn's not gonna dry out for a good 14 hours don't worry about fungus this is a new seeding and that seed will stay wet all night long it's a great way to do it and then you don't have to even worry about running your irrigation system until the sun comes out you know maybe about 11 or 12 and then get it wet again but that late night that late afternoon early evening watering is really important on seating i think that's one of the things that has really made successful for me so anyways guys i will take you back there in about two months and we will see what wins out what survives does that zoya actually come up and does it survive does the bermuda does the tall fescue how do they work together this is a high traffic play area and that's one of the reasons why i like to mix them too now i wouldn't do this on my front lawn because it probably looked weird but a lot of people have backyards like this where they get a lot of shade and their bermuda doesn't do well you can mix in another grass as long as it's really not a creeping hope this helped hit subscribe and i'll talk to you later [Music]
