hello guys welcome back to the media nights my name is Ari and I'm Denise today we're going to be watching Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and honestly I am stoked after watching that first film it was incredible I mean we really complimented a lot of the aspects in that film from the set design to the incredible score to some of the action sequences I thought it was very kinetic and energetic and such a perfect you know action adventure film perfect for the season and I cannot wait to jump into the second one and see what you think about it yeah the first one was honestly such a blast like it it hit like a punch because there was so much energy in it and I absolutely Ador adored that about it you know the performances were amazing obviously you know Johnny Depp freaking killed it as Jack Sparrow and it was just as iconic as I always heard about it which you know it's it's it's always like difficult when you have expectations and then when something just like completely obliterates that it's always just such a great time we did end up checking out the uh the post credit I have absolutely no idea what it means I just saw you know our little pirate monkey you know stealing another one of those Aztec gold coins we'll see what that means I'm just going to assume that the curse is not over over maybe we'll see I don't know he gave us a little tease there I'm excited in case you guys don't know I've actually watched these a long time ago but this is Denise's first time watching so again you guys are in on it you know we've already watched the first one there she is is that a veil this looks stunning man already the cinematography it's a darker mood huh mhm what the hell is going on here oh I remember that place what oh what now what is this happening I don't know I think it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding let me through what how dare you stand your men down at once Governor C Becket it's Lord now Lord Becket you have no reason and no authority to arrest this man in fact I do what is it I'm honestly curious this warrant is for Elizabeth's Swan how is this that's annoying my mistake arrest her oh [ __ ] what ah here's the one for William Turner he's such a dick he's like oh my mistake here the charge is conspiring to set free a Man convicted of crimes against the crown and Empire and condemned to death for which the for which the punishment regrettably is also death oh boy do you remember a certain pirate named Jack Sparrow Captain hell yeah it's stuck say his name right he was playing this despicable character in Pride and Prejudice that's where I recognized him from Mr Collins the dev had for is that R more than likely it is at least it's not gone you know that's definitely a good omen yeah and they're heading straight to wherever those birdies are the World building already on point holy crap oh no my God munching on the people locked in those cages mhm uh that's a painful way to go holy [ __ ] they definitely dialed up the the darkness for sure in tone Oh you already know who it's going to be yes he's definitely not dead thankfully [Music] thankfully don't forget the Hat complete the look might if we make a little side trip I mean listen you got to do what you got to do you got what you went in for then MH we're expecting something a bit more shiny oh some loot sure us what is on that piece of cloth there the cursed monkey you did did you just do that from him it is a drawing of a key okay Keys unlock things yes very well so we're setting out to find whatever this key unlocks no we can't open whatever it is is we don't have that it unlocks so what purpose will be served in finding whatever need be unlocked without the key right so we're going after this mutual friend Captain Sparrow ah we've had dealings in the past and we've each left our mark on the other I see the property you want that he possesses a compass oh bring back that compass or there's no deal what is up with that Compass there's the mark he left on him well it's more valuable than the than the Black Pearl so that's saying something why is the rum always gone I was just thinking why Leviathan will find you it will drag the Pearl back to the depths and you along with it oh any idea when Jones might release said terrible beasty beasty the time is up I was going to say you're running out of time Jack to the man what be us the black spot oh oh my God he is marked and now he just disappeared Into Thin Air so cool we finally got to meet Bill Turner bootstrap bootstrap that's awful though imagine being down at the bottom of the sea and you cannot die drowning eternally yeah that sounds like a terrible fate dude that's horrible run Land Run land L any oh you little [ __ ] come back here back to his uh old mischievous Behavior little rascal run yeah he's terrified For the Love of mother and child Jack what's coming after us nothing right you should be honest with your crew man they're going to need to know all the details not the iconic hat was so iconic it's a pretty hat what a shame that's Turkish what the hell he's like look I found a hat and he's like oh it's even building the image of Jack even more right when you get these little testimonials what people think he is right right he's a a myth in a way a legend what's wrong the beach is right there oh all right have to swim the rest of the way looks like it that's such a badass looking ship man it's beautiful the Black Pearl I love how how they make it look full scale like this looks amazing Jack know right he knocked out instantly wow look at this place this is beautiful I love the visuals they use man for these movies already making this world feel bigger right we're getting to explore new places that's always awesome oh well from one issue one problem to the next one I swear I see he he got some of that Jack Sparrow luck it rubbed off on him looks like it did oh that's great well hello each other and it just shows so well in the dialogue it's really well written these two again what escaped us from jail and I'll say it was me being clever it's that we got to take care of our Immortal Souls you know you can't read it's the Bible you get credit for trying a a that's a mark against you know who what's got to him must have seen a catfish he got it he's like ah a catfish oh no additional beats they integrated here more instruments makes it sound even more epic does a beast does the bidding of Davey Jones a fearsome creature with giant tentacles the suction in your face clean off the Kraken like the Kraken Kraken the Kraken the last thing you know on God's green earth is the Roar of the Kraken and the wreaking odor of a thousand rotting corpses yeah that does not sound Pleasant at all man I'll I'll pass look at these locations man it's stunning man they killed it somehow this movie looks even better dear dolman I go way back his thieves now Inseparable we are letting will go by himself has me very concerned just seeing Jack's demeanor normally he's you know he's still a bit confident despite the challenge but this time around he's like hell no I'm not dealing with all that ah beautiful colors right yeah that nice tealing orange I mean we're used to seeing this in Hollywood by now but man when they get it right it just works foul breath oh oh he was that's hardly fair who was surrounded I can't look at the design of those pirates oh the theme is beautiful oh my God a whole claw for a hand wow do you feel day wow that's great I can offer you an no kind of feel bad for nton man how the mighty have fallen huh yeah he lost everything he had in pursuit of pirates waa what a shot this look amazing oh that is that is so cool that's such a flex as a talent can can you imagine I can play with my uh octopus beard can you do that I don't think so oh yes like I I play the piano I feel really intimidated by him right now the atmosphere in this movie so far they're truly doubling down on everything that worked in the first one yes that Fantastical Whimsical element in the dark tone works so well oh my God he's so close to his dad oh step aside he yourself let's go oh my [Music] God yeah he recognizes who that is oh five lashes will remind you to stay onor no no you'll share the punishments oh take it off will you now would prompt such an act of Charity do not tell him he cannot know he's like something is wrong here he my son he was like say what interesting five lashes beod I believe it is oh no he's going to make him do it no I won't we have our headache there you go finally I was going to say thank God for uh Elizabeth saving the day here it is honestly so impressive that like Jack is such a liar but he's also so honest at the same time like it's a game of deception but your bet includes all the dice not just your own what are they wager oh the only thing we have years of service o betting more time ow I challenged Davey Jones William damn it will really oh he heard you damn just the vibe he gives off man Davy Jones just chills he's got so much Swagger look at him it's the presence you just know you don't you don't mess with this guy good job to the actor to be able to act past all of that right the stakes my soul an eternity of servitude no will what this guy against I want this wow that's ballsy it's going to just tell him what his plan is how do you know the key that's not part of the game is it leveraging information is this going to work I feel like he's going to take that as a threat yeah like a serious one cuz if he knows about the key who else does yeah oh all right he accepts what's this I'm in a don't do this C bootstrap I love the theme in this one of you know fathers protecting their their children yeah damn stellen skarsgard's performance in this is beautiful there's so much emotion in his eyes shh attention four fives seven fives oh [ __ ] 85s welcome to the crew line 12 fives leans into the part that everyone perceives about him being too like impulsive and you know Captain's orders also the makeup is insane theils that must have taken a long time to do and the entire characterization as well like how they are performing with the entire bodies you know it's something that you see with a lot of uh actors that have been in theater and we're seeing this a lot here you know everything they're doing with the physicality oh God this is like straight out of a horror film oh boy amazing visual effects as well the reflections and to see he's wet still holds it holds up please he is right there you're so lucky he's knocked out ah smart slowly I will not abandon you I promise yeah you know will means it yeah he will keep his word there's no way to live man Even though initially it is what he wanted I don't think all of this this was part of the plan yeah no I don't think he signed up for everything might I inquire as to how you came by this persuasion friendly there's no way you saw the size of that tentacle oh my God it's like the lore it's the Dr yes some of the humor man ah the Beast look at how fast it just takes over the the entire ship wa yep move out of the way that's it the ship was done oh yeah oh soundtrack that's an insane visual oh dude seeing the ship being absolutely demolished and destroyed there's the mouth what the hell is he going to do all you can really do is just swim whoa who get a good look at it PO is not here he must have been claimed by the sea I am the sea badass line mhm he will be claimed by me oh did he sense him he was any kind of decent we'd remove Temptation from their path that like come on the way he uses it you know it's not stealing we're saving the ship maybe if we take the chest we'll do them a favor you know no temptation exactly we're good men it's for the great do good you know yeah nobody gives a [ __ ] they're still fighting [Music] yep oh oh she noticed okay that's good I don't think I've ever seen like a three-way fight I was going to say it's a one for all hell yeah leave Mr Turner oh okay fighting dirty will needs to start fighting dirty he's too Honorable in this fight I like the development they given uh Norrington in this we get to see him in a different light now you know it's kind of cool he's kind of the same but very different like these SASS and the attitude and the arrogance is still there minus the [Music] wig that is amazing wow the choreography in these films too they're just excellent and the stunn people that managed to do this you know if it's not the actress I [Music] mean he's like I I'll try to you know maybe take that oh God who was it that at the very moment you had a notorious pirate safely Behind Bars saw fit to freeze said pirate and take your dearly beloved all to himself I savy jack barel oh God all right he's right still got some hard feelings over that oh to be fair I can understand like Lo no way a this that is great this would be great as a ride oh man that is epic fighting while the whole wheel is moving like that Jack Jack get down oh no what the hell no the key I love how the sword fighting it always matches the Rhythm ah yes it does God these two of course W fight them wol took her sword and a puppet parlay parlay meanwhile this epic fight is going grab it grab it grab it oh God what a mess come oh my goodness oh no got to get it no no no no no no [Music] oh right into the hamster wheel the theme is just freaking amazing man oh nice hell yeah great shot guys wow I love how creative they get with their fight sequences yes wow I love that locked camera nice very [Music] nice oh that's they're actually a good team I love that oh no way down they go just a nicely planted head shot [Music] oh uh wow yeah it's the actual heart oh oh nice those skills are coming in handy don't you love it when they have a bit of a you know some time has passed and when you see the characters again they've actually learned something yeah and in this case it makes total sense that will will would will would teach her right yeah especially because in the first one you know she clearly had interest for that so it makes sense that you would lean into that oh God put it inside the jar of dirt oh God these two are still going they're not fighting they're just holding on for dear life [Music] a well they made it down he made it back safely one [Music] second right your girl's fighting [Laughter] yeah oh man take a [Music] minute no your bravery is wasted you're surrounding my dude here you go oh out for him need I give it up no not quite there's your answer I love how they made this movie feel so much bigger than the first one and the first one already felt massive oh no yeah there's our answer yeah Norrington lesson huh it's coming back more pissed seems like you're being paid for it it's attack in the same positions exactly where he got mhm oh my God this is gnarly oh no wow that was traumatizing the back hey man kudos to the sound design that sold the heck out of it the the wet sound of the tentacle and then the cracks do you know what you want yet it's insane that he would leave his ship behind he came back all right let's make some Camari and [Music] Sushi oh wow that's great oh nice he got that aim down hopefully that hurts it enough too ow yeah there's no way the Kraken is recovering from that you were right with the Kari part there you go taste a little bit of it you know put a lemon M abandoned ship into the Longboat Abandoned Ship she's only a ship wow the character development Abandoned Ship Abandoned Ship or abandoned hope oh man yeah it's the only way out of this I always knew you were a good man okay what wait what what the hell prepare to cast off there's no damn this Fame these and you must have something to trade the heart of Davy Jones what you wanted can't believe [Music] it yeah the morale is low now that they they lost Jack for him it's a double whammy right he lost Jack and he saw his girl kissing him to Jack Sparrow never another lot Captain Jack he was a good man this is so juicy it's tough man if there was anything could be done to bring him back would you do it would you sail to the ends of the Earth and Beyond to bring him back i i a i yes all right you will need a captain indeed okay yo what's become of my [ __ ] hell yes he finally gets to enjoy the Apple hey man W hell yes so there you have it that was Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest okay so Jack Sparrow is is dead Barbosa is back which I'm super happy about looks like our our crew is going to go after Jack this movie was so much fun I love that they really elaborated on the lore they went even deeper and they went even funkier than the last time like you know I was feeling bad for the crew of The Black Pearl yeah with that curse and then now I see these guys that are stuck with dve Jones and man just to say to them I just hope that they're not in too much pain and the fact that they you know they have to serve off almost like a life sentence to him that's really rough we finally got some answers on bootstrap we got to meet him got to meet God first of all I I love that like in the first one they were like oh you look you know when Jack first saw will he was like oh you know you look familiar because he looked like his father and his father looked absolutely nothing like will which I absolutely love but stellen skarsgard's performance as as bootstrap bill was amazing man like it's one of the highlights for me for sure obviously you know Johnny Depp and everyone else and this was absolutely fantastic but like that performance in particular really stands out to me because there was so much vulnerability and regret and guilt in those eyes phenomenal so many so many iconic moments in this the fight sequences they were so creative they I love that they again like I mentioned they went Bonkers like the whole cage of Bones sequence was absolutely amazing when Norrington and Jack and will were stuck in that you know wheel of death at this point that's what I'm going to call it that moment was iconic so many beautiful like sceneries and a lot of great shots where you can tell that the ship is actually in the open sea I love that they put in the effort I love that they you know you really built on the groundwork that they had set with the first one they went even further they went even more Bonkers and I had I genuinely had such a good time with this one I'm so glad you enjoyed it one of my favorite uh you know elements of this movie in particular is Bill Na's performance as you know the iconic Dave Jones I didn't remember much of this film I have to be honest very similar to the first one but some of the moments that stuck out were his presence I remember you know how I felt as a kid watching him I was like oh my God this guy is a scary dude but he's got so much personality that just comes through you know the way he walks the way he talks the way he carries himself lets you know this guy's a man that has power and he knows how to leverage that and he's been using that for a very very long time and he's not scared of a challenge so I love that you know whenever you know he has a bit of a temper so that's I think that's a bit of his you know his weaker side is whenever whenever Jack taunts him or makes fun of him that's when he loses his school and he goes straight really enjoyed that about this and I like the intricacies in this PL quite a bit I think they grabed what worked in the first FM and were able to you know give us a story that's similar but I think bigger and in many ways better than the first one in terms of the complic the intricacies let's say the complicated setup of let's use leverage to move the plot forward that's kind of like the main theme I feel like from these past two films is like oh it's something you want there's something that the other character wants and at some point there's going to be you know that crossroads where both of them meet and even if they've had the the common goal up until this point this is where it ends and now they have to fight it out so that iconic scene where you know you have uh Norrington you have will you have Jack all fighting at the same time you have Elizabeth with the other two Pirates running around it's insane but it shows you I think that's one of the highlights of this movie because you see so many different dynamics that you wouldn't have expected you know you see Elizabeth fighting alongside these Pirates because of course the common enemy are these sea guys sea Pirates right so it's really fun not to talk not even you know going to talk about that whole wheel sequence that was phenomenal so well done great moment when the they chose to lock the camera and you know we could feel that rotation great way of you know sucking the audience in and feeling what our characters are feeling which is you know pretty dizzy by the looks of it by the end of that that sequence I I thoroughly enjoyed this a lot of you know the the ins and out again of you know who's got the key who's got the chest who's taken the heart I love the the switch r that we had going on and I I honestly did not remember much of it what I did remember however is obviously Jack sacrifice at the end of the movie I think that's a huge you know part of the film and that's something that of course as a kid that impacted me and uh you know I was I was waiting for you know to see how you would take it but yeah it's it's quite hard man we we lose our our lead in this and it's it's tough to see a world without Jack and and the Kraken man the Kraken was so formidable that's an opponent yeah and it's so funny because like you know the Kraken is like just like that creature that that Beast that you always kind of hear about here and there I love that they brought that back the funny thing is like it's like oh it makes so much sense of course he would have the Kraken in this right you know seeing Jack just stuck in that situation and managing to get himself out once again but then in the end he just turns around and just takes the Kraken head on was I I I was honestly so stunned by that because I'm like you wouldn't expect a character like Jack to be killed off right yeah because like that's that's kind of his thing he always finds a way out he always finds a way to weasle his way out or talk his way out of a really sticky situation and in this one he he went down swinging you know and I think like that was a great way to end a character I feel especially for a character like him one thing I'm a little confused about was the whole Elizabeth Jack situation that they that sprouted in this one I can understand that you know time has gone by you know and Elizabeth is starting to realize that there's a whole world out there she's going to start to learn a bit more about herself you know she's getting everyone is getting a little bit older so she the fact that she discovers that she would possibly want actually adventure and a little bit more than the life that she has right now can totally understand that you know will is a technically like a pirate which is what they said in the previous movie but like the whole love triangle thing that I don't know how I feel about it I like love love triangles I feel like you know they they can add to your story and I also feel like if you don't do it right they can detract a little bit from it um it's very it was a little bit confusing because you couldn't quite tell if it was genuine if she was just confused if she was bored if it was just opportunity or if she was just being Savvy right if she was just being a bit more conniving shall we say and calculating don't really quite know I'm very I'm very curious to see where that is going to lead I mean she managed to trick the ultimate trickster Jack Sparrow well I think it's uh it's a complicated layers I think there's a little bit of everything that's my interpretation I feel like you know the compass never lies so we have you know either two scenarios either she is into him which is the obvious take but I think it's the latter I think it's the more complex I think somehow obviously the compass knows everything we don't know how it works we just know it just does right I think in a in a messed up way the compass knew that Jack was the key to saving will so whenever the compass was pointing at Jack is the same reason why they got to the chess in the first place right so once they got to the chess it started pointing at Jack as like well you know after this step you're going to need him because the Kraken is if you know you're all going to die without this guy this is who you need to save your own skin and a messed up way so I think it was a bit of a combination of everything it's about saving will but also the Temptation and at the same time I think she did exactly what Jack challenged her to do which was you know persuade me right and she did you know and in the best way she could she did and and Jack just fell for it and I think there's a little bit of you know obviously she's always admired you know the Pirates and she's always been there's a sense of that magnetism let's call it right she's attracted to it in a certain way but she's always been attracted to it since she was since she was a kid a little bit of that could also play part but I do think maybe you know that that kiss felt a bit you know she she enjoyed that a little bit too much so we don't know she really put her back into that one godamn but I love that you know the writing is as complex as that where the characters are making choices that you know people would make in the in real life is not just black or white there's a lot of Grays and you know moral choices they have to make where you're like H that's a bit questionable even though you're saying it's to save everybody else you're still you know why and I don't think she knows I mean she probably feels I mean come on will is being super cold with her I'm sure she knows that's she he probably saw her you know doing that so oh man that's a complicated situation but by the end of it we have TMA saying hey if you guys really want your captain back you're willing to do whatever it takes and they're all like I we're going to do whatever it takes and she's like well we're going to need a captain then and in comes Barbosa what a moment man and I love that he finally got to B bite the Apple oh my God he finally got to take a bite of the apple and he got to enjoy it as as vile of a character that he was in quotation marks you know I really felt for him in the previous one I really cuz you just see his expression you know when he gets shot by Jack and he he actually starts having sensation again and he says I feel cold and it's like oh my God he never got to at least have one apple before you go you know what I mean or a sip of wine or or or anything really and it was just just the humor of it all you know we we got our little monkey back you know our pirate monkey which is great but speaking of tiad Dalma dude I loved her Edition as a character what a fascinating character because it's like it adds another Supernatural element of things it's almost like she's loky like like a witch but also like a psychic kind of situation her character was the perfect way to deliver the lore of Davey Jones right and you know how he fell in love and the whole chest situation the way she delivered it it was so mystical and it was just that perfect little extra spice that it added to the story I loved the addition of all of these characters like Davey Jones tiad Delma bootstrap you know I'm finally getting to see him seeing Norrington like this oh my God I did not expect that at all that was different huh it's so good to see you know they these characters evolved you know and that's how you know that they care about the writing they don't just give us a copy paste of what worked in the first film no they want to develop these characters and we get a lot of development and you know it's pretty cool to see a character like Norrington which you know we love to hate in the first film but then in the second film it almost feels like oh it's nice to see you again it's like a familiar face but you know you're you're similar but something has changed and you see that he is kind of learning you know what it takes to to be able to be steps ahead of pirates which is you can't play you know safe you have to play dirty and that's what he does in this film he's constantly playing dirty he's throwing sand sand at people's eyes making them trip you know and clearly you see that Norrington from the first film would have been uptight about that and would have been honorable but not this one this Norrington is going to do whatever it takes to get you know the upper hand and get his freedom and obviously by the end of this film he actually achieves it the one that wins this time around so I thought that was cool he couldn't win as a normal person or as um a Commodore but he wins as a you know a pseudo pirate let's call it right a type of pirate even though he probably hates himself for it but that's what got him ahead of the ahead of the curve really enjoyed that I thought this movie felt bigger in in many ways we got to you know visit so many locations and they all looked so beautiful and colorful seeing the Flying Dutchman sink like that specific shot and you're like oh my God it's diving it's so cool man that we get to see like pirates that feel different that are very unique and ships that you know have their own abilities as well the triple Cannon thing you know calling the Kraken it's so badass yeah I I love the the different aspects that they brought to you know like the whole concept of being a pirate the first introduction that we had Jack and then we got to meet the rest of the crew from the Black Pearl and the curse that they were dealing with and all these things and then now we got to see something entirely different and I love the creativity that they put into that you know whether it's little details of them like breathing and how certain things move moving their faces and stuff um especially with Dave Jones you know the whole tentacle situation he was smoking the pipe and whatnot and the smoke was coming out one of the tentacles yeah exactly it's those little things and or like how he plays you know like the the organ with that I thought I thought that that was just so smart they they really really had fun with it you know they weren't shy of going really to some of the extremes that would come with something like this a story like this right and it never felt stale there was so much going on you can kind of tell that this is the second movie because it had to do a whole lot of heavy lifting yeah and I'm feeling like you can feel that they're preparing us for the next one um but considering that I think they did a really good job cuz like the second movie can always kind of feel like it's Exposition dump after Exposition dump and it can feel a bit repetitive a little bit tedious but this did not feel like that at all and I loved all the additions that they also made to the characters and like their relationships to each other and how the characters have evolved but also their relationships have as well I think they they did a fantastic job with that yeah I think even though it is sort of that like you mentioned a transitory film it still is it still manages to capture a lot of the things that we love from the first one and show us like the evolved version of that and I think it's a perfect you know I I won't talk too much about it but I think it's a perfect way to set up what we're about to see for you know part three of the of of pirates I I really enjoyed where they left off the story I thought it was perfect it was enough you know we don't need to know anymore like let us go into part three knowing as much as we do now and feeling the way that our characters feel which is ultimately a bit hopeless a bit you know a bit darker a bit Grim but there's a spark of hope you know we've got Barbosa back so cannot wait to see him that Dynamic is going to be awesome I am so glad that you enjoyed this second film I'm glad that you're enjoying the world the characters and yeah guys thank you so much for joining us once again we hope that you enjoyed and we'll catch you guys in the next one take care
