things a bit differently in today's service i have not publicly acknowledged our visitors today online on site but we have to remember that the holy spirit has full control amen i don't want to be one of those program churches where we know who's going to shout next and we know who's coming up next and we know how long they're gonna do it next but somebody know that where the spirit of the lord is they're gonna be liberated and when the holy ghost starts moving we have to stay in tune to his frequency how he shall lead us and god as i certainly will pay homage to our visitors after the sermon today we're continuing with this series of living with losses we've talked about losing our peace losing people losing patience last week we talked about losing passion what do you do when you've lost your power i want to examine that today join with me in second kings chapter six i want to begin reading at the very first verse second kings chapter six beginning at verse 1. [Music] the new international version of the holy word of god reads the company of the prophet said to elisha look the place where we meet with you is too small for us let us go to the jordan where each of us can get a poll let us build a place there for us to meet he said go and one of them said won't you please come with your servants i will elijah replied he went with them they went to the jordan and began to cut down trees as one of them was cutting down a tree the iron ax head fell into the water oh no my lord he cried out it was borrowed the man of god asked where did it fall when he showed him the place elisha cut a stick and threw it there and made the iron float the king james said that the iron swam lifted out he said and the man reached out his hand and took it so we ended the reading of the word i want to focus on that fifth verse one of them was cutting down a tree the iron axe head fell into the water oh no my lord he cried it was it was borrowed i want to preach today about power failure power failure look at your neighbor if you don't like them you chose the wrong seat or the us shall put you in the wrong one and look at them and say neighbor sometimes in this life come on put your preacher voice on and tell them sometime in this life you will have power failure give the lord a thunderous round of applause will you you may have your seats in the presence of of the lord one of my mentors is the reverend william alexander lawson who we affectionately call bill lawson he is the pastor merits of the church where i am a member wheeler avenue baptist church in houston texas and he recalled on one such occasion that he was on his way to a function said that he was dressed to the nines he had on a thousand dollar suit had on a dollar shirt one hundred dollar tie watch cost thousands of dollars eight hundred dollar shoes stepped in a fifty thousand dollar car turned the ignition and nothing happened experienced a i see some of you all have had that experience but he had a power failure when he looked in the car he saw that he had left one of the lights on in the car from the previous day and he remarked that although this car was fifty thousand dollars that he was stepping into with his eight hundred dollar shoes is one thousand dollar suit that he could not move for because of above that cost five dollars a five dollar bill brought a fifty thousand dollar car to a standstill he could not move he was stuck because of power failure and some of you may say that is a portrait of your life but you're trying to move forward but you're stuck because you've experienced a power failure you're not by yourself you're not alone because we're told in second kings chapter 6 that elijah who is the mentee the protege of eli jah was a man of such influence that he was a preacher's preacher he was a prophet's prophet so much so that they had a school a a seminary if you will for budding preachers the bible said as he was the headmaster the leader of this school that his influence began to enlarge and even the more because one of the students remarked to elijah that the living quarters on this campus is too small for us to put it in school terms the dormitory where we're staying where we also are being schooled it's too small for us let's build a larger living space let's build a larger living quarter and elisha commissions them to do the work and now in verse 5 the scene shifts from all the prophets to one of the prophets that one of them was swinging so hard y'all he was hitting that tree so hard with all his might you thought he had an attitude problem with that tree he was hitting with all that he had with that particular acts and we are told that while he was out there you all see me today while he was out there with his axe cutting with all that he had he noticed that the ex handle got light in his hand because the axe head had fallen off of the axe handle and had gone into the water causing this man to experience a power failure notice i didn't say the man didn't have passion because evidently he had passion because that's the reason why the axe head came off of the ax handle this man had a power problem he didn't have a passion issue it was a power problem because passion deals with availability but power deals with the capability even when you don't have any availability see a passion problem is when you have readiness but a power problem is regardless if you are ready or not you've got the resources that is need whether you're ready or not to perform the task at hand see a passion problem is a problem where you are talking about your accessibility but when you talk about power whether you are accessible or not are you able to complete the task that has been assigned to you the power in this text is representing that indispensable tool that indispensable instrument but if it is taken away from you you're not able to perform the task at hand that's what happened to venus and serena williams you heard that for the first time since 2003 both of them decided that they were not going to participate in the u.s open why because they didn't have a passion problem they had a a power problem because venus remarked that she had a leg injury and serena has a bruised hamstring both of them could not compete because they had a power problem they had lost their axe head they had lost their cutting edge they had lost their power and my question to you is what is the axe head that you have lost what is the cutting edge that has gotten away from you what is the power that you used to have but you've lost it isn't your prayer life is it you once a month fasting and praying see some of us didn't got so big in covet because we don't pray and we don't fast anymore we don't put i wish somebody would talk to me we don't push back from the table anymore we're scooting closer in to the table rather than pulling back from the table is it your prayer life is it fasting and praying is it your sitting before the lord is it your meditation time is it your consecration time is it the love of a husband if it's the love of a wife is it the love of the children that you used to have but you don't have it no more and for some of us it's the love of our own selves [Music] some of us when we look in the mirror we don't like what we see we don't have to wait to october 31st halloween in order to see a ghost or goblin because when we look in the mirror we see a ghost of ourselves i wish i had some help in here today what is your axe head what is the power that you used to have that you don't have anymore we must examine the question why why did this man lose his axe head why did he lose his cutting edge why did he lose his power in the first place i believe brothers and sisters it was because of his negligence keep looking at the text brothers and sisters because i'm of the opinion that the act's head did not go all at once i believe with every swing that he was swinging at that tree it was loosening the ex-head from the ax handle and gradually he begin to lose his power that that's how it usually happens it doesn't happen all at once it happens gradually it happens over time if it happened over time and the brother did not see it it's because he was so busy working and he wasn't busy watching and you got to be careful that while you are working at the same time you need to be watching while you're working because if the man would have been watching he would have noticed that the axe head was coming off the axe handle and he would never have lost his power if he would have been watching while he was working we got to watch while we're working that's why in matthew 26 around the 41st verse jesus says don't just pray but the first thing he says is watch and pray because we got to do just as much watching as we do working and brothers and sisters that's why i tell the lord don't just open my heart to receive your blessings don't just open my hands to receive your blessing don't just open up my ears to hear your voice don't just open up my hands so i can bless somebody else but lord open up my eyes not so i can see but open up my eyes so i can watch i need somebody to talk to me out there because it's some folks out here in the world you don't need to see you need to watch them i wish somebody would talk to me out there uh because you talking about lord let me see but sometimes what you see is not real what you see is not really the truth because some people will tell you that they're going to be with you and they're going to stand for you and they're going to stand by you but as soon as you have a power failure they'll leave you holding the bag all by yourself but i asked the lord to open up my eyes to see beyond the facade to see beyond the veneer to see what you really are to see what your true colors really make you to be oh we need to tell the lord to open up our eyes so we can watch but can i fast forward the story can i fast forward the story to tell you because i know you want to know when the man lost his power when he lost his axe head when he lost his cutting edge was he able to get it back i'm so glad to report that this man was able to recover what he had lost i think that's a good word right there this man was able to recover his axe head he was able to recover his cutting edge he was able to recover his power and that's a good word for some of you because you lost some power in your life and the devil has told you that you'll never get it back but can somebody testify the devil is alive and the last time i checked the devil don't have the last word the president don't have the last word the governor does not have the last word the mayor does not have the last word but i need about 300 folk i'll make 301 that will testify god has the last word and when the devil tries to remove it god can restore it because the god that i serve is in the restorative business how do you know he will restore because david said the lord is my shepherd and i shall not walk he makes me lie down in green pastures he leaves me beside the still hear the other he restore can i get a witness in here that no he can restore it but the devil will remove it god can restore it god can replenish it god can refill it god can refuel it god can refurbish it if there anybody in this church that know the god we serve is in the restorative business whatever you've lost [Applause] whatever power you had that you've lost i mean to tell you god can i said god can't i said god can restore david said restore unto me the joy of my salvation he's in the restorative business [Applause] well pastor how how was he able to retrieve that which he had lost and it looked as if he had lost it forever uh i want to show you through the acronym act to show you how you should act to retrieve what you've lost the first aid that i lift up for you the first letter in this acronym stands for admit you in order for you to retrieve what you've lost you've got to admit come on somebody that you lost it you can't find it if you can't admit that you lost it and a whole lot of us like to put on airs and try to act like in other people's presence but we got it all together come on help me somebody we try to fake the funk like all is well but one thing i have learned since i've been living is that you can live a lie but the people know the truth come on help me somebody because a tree is known by the fruit that is bad folk can look at you and listen to you and can tell if you've lost the power that you once had well since we already know let's just go and tell the truth anyway that you've got to admit that you've lost it if you want to find it again uh one thing i'm hearing more and more in different circles i hear people saying i hope i don't offend your sensibilities it's just fertilizer for the sermon i hear people saying often i i'm going to live my truth you've heard that haven't you regardless of what you say about me i'm gonna live my truth i hear you i feel you but as your pastor i need to tell you that just because you're living your truth don't make it the truth can i say it again just cause you doing your thing i wish somebody would talk to me you shaking your thing doing what you want to do with it come on isla brother people just because you doing your thing and doing what you want to do and you living your truth don't try to make us believe that your truth is god's truth because if you don't add up with the word of god baby you're living your truth and don't try to lie and make us believe that you're living god's truth on up to it you live in your truth [Applause] and john 8 32 says that you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free it's time for us to start living god's truth [Music] if we really want the freedom that god can give this this man was able to regain what he had lost because he told the truth he had he admitted that he had lost it and then he could find it not only does he admit it by his words ladies and gentlemen but he admits it likewise by his actions watch this if you please notice that when this man realizes that the axe head has come off of the axe handle look at the text notice he didn't keep swinging he took a break re-gathered his thoughts re-gathered himself and then reassessed what he was getting ready to do next i like him because he's smart enough to know that i shouldn't keep swinging if he ain't got no power [Music] he took a break from swinging to regather himself this is what the holy spirit revealed to me to reveal to you that in the word break through the word break comes first which says that the reason why some of us have not gotten our breakthrough is because we're so busy swinging and won't take a break after we have lost our power [Applause] take a break stop swinging beating at the air we got choir members [Applause] swinging and ain't got no power [Applause] we got ushers ushering swinging ain't got no power come on pastor we got musicians been at the nightclub all night long [Applause] and want to come in here with your holy hands and get on the instrument [Applause] we got preachers preaching [Applause] stealing sermons off the internet [Applause] i wish i had some help in here ain't sit down and talk to god about nothing because ladies and gentlemen i get on my knees every sunday night and ask the lord after i just preach sunday morning give me fresh bread for next week [Applause] i wish i had somebody to help me in here swinging and they ain't hitting us but can i tell you something for those that are still swinging and they ain't hitting nothing can i tell you the objective in this game of christianity is not to swing at something it's to hit at something can i get a witness in here and the reason we can't hit the devil where it hurts the most is we got too many christians that are swinging and ain't got no power but i wish i had some folk in here that say i came in church today because i need god to power me up if you want god to power you up i dare you to raise your hand and say spirit of the living god [Applause] come on don't just say it because i'm asking you but if you really god need god to give you some power if you really need god to give you the holy ghost power that you need ask him to fill your cup and let it overflow he'll do it anybody know he'll do with him anybody know he'll fill your cup he'll give you the power you need to go through monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday and come right back here sunday morning [Music] you you got to admit that you've lost your power the c component in act is you need to consult a mentor i'm still in the text the book says that when he notice his power is gone he doesn't go at it alone but he consults his mentor elisha as to what were his thoughts on the situation what were his thoughts on the matter which lets me know children of god that you need to find you when you lose your power a mentor somebody that has already gone through what you're going through why so you won't make the same mistakes that they have made [Music] notice elisha was this prophet's mentor why because he's a prophet he's studying to become a prophet and he chooses elijah in this instance because he has lost something and he wants to find it because when you begin to run through the roses dance of the daffodils and tiptoe through the tulips of the scripture and go back to second kings chapter four we find that this same elisha lost something and he found it again there was a little boy that had lost his life but elisha prayed to the lord laid prostrate over him and that same boy that had lost his life god gave the life back to him watch this elisha had experience in regaining things that he had lost and many of us are choosing the wrong mentors just cause they are hot on social media does not mean that they fit the bill to be your mentor to help you to get your power back i i find it amazing that that your finances are messed up but you getting counsel from folk that's still borrowing money from you i wish somebody would talk to me what what kind of sense does that make here it is you having marital problems but you getting advice from sister girl who didn't have five husbands i wish y'all would talk to me and she shack it up with mr six right now how in the world can they give you what you need and have not been equipped for the journey i told the eight o'clock service i might as well tell you all i know some of the members of pilgrim rest said pastor mack is only 39 years old what can he tell me i got shoes i got clothes older than pastor mackie what can he tell me can i tell you what i can tell you i can tell you the same thing god told me to tell you i wish i had some help out here and if martin luther king can change the civil rights movement at 27 if jesus can change the world at 33 i can help you do something at 39. and the church said amen [Applause] we have hold on let me say this too because some of us i might step on some toe the reason why some of us can't get our breakthrough is because can't nobody tell us nothing is this microphone out on over there we think we know everything but the minute you stop learning you start dying [Applause] [Music] ask the lord to open your heart to receive what thus says i i tell you church he he he consulted a mentor but but the last thing t is you have to trace your steps because he asked elisha elijah what's your thoughts on the matter elijah asked the question where did you lose it and i lost it in the jordan river that's important because that question led him to retrace his steps have you ever lost your keys in the house and you looking everywhere for your keys but as soon as you sat down long enough to think about where you put them last it forces you to retrace and track your steps and then you find yourself finding the very thing that you had lost why because you can't find it if you don't go back to where you left it you got to go back to where you lost it because it's in the same place where you lost it if you're going to find it children of god i i don't know about you all but do you all watch uh shows like law and order do you watch shows like law and order special victims unit okay let me go back uh murder she wrote in colombo and okay i i knew i would get a few of y'all on some of those in the here [Music] [Applause] some of y'all might not know you need to go back and watch in the heat of the night [Applause] [Music] when you're watching those type of shows somewhere in the episodes take my word for it there's going to be a missing person report somebody's going to be missing and when the investigator asks the people the first question they're going to ask them is where did you see them last why because they want you to retrace your steps why because when you retrace your steps i love this part when you retrace your steps you'll usually find a clue you'll find a lead in the retracing that will help you to gain what you lost and you'll be able to find it and that's all i'm trying to tell somebody watch this sometime and i'm done this is my nice little pretty bowl on the sermon you ready for it sometime you got to go backwards in order to go forward how many do i write about it so sometimes you got to look back before you look forward why because there's something you left back there there's some power you left behind you that you're going to need to take with you on your journey ahead [Applause] uh it reminds me of a story there was this lady who had fallen on hard times she told the lord i'm going to backslide i'm going to turn away from the faith but before i do it i'm going to look back i'ma look back one more time and thank you for everything that you did for me the lady on the knees began to start praying he said lord i i want to thank you that when my job fired me and it looked like i i wasn't going to pull through you gave me a better job than the one that i had lost [Music] said lord before i backslide i want to tell you thank you that when my husband walked off and left me you still stayed by my side [Music] i want to thank you for that to lord before i throw up my hands and leave the faith that i want to thank you that my little girl when she was five years old she swallowed a nickel and i didn't have time to take her to the doctor i didn't have time to take her to the hospital but i scarred on the name of jesus and up came the nickel and i got a witness in here and that lady said to herself i can't backslide now because the lord has been too good to me is there anybody here know time for you to go forward you got to look back over what the lord has done have i got a witness in here i know today when you look on your left side you got trouble you got confusion you got misunderstanding that's on your left side when you look on your right side somebody's sick with covet 19 somebody's in the hospital somebody passed and gone that's on your right side but when you look ahead of you all you see is heels and more heels and more heels and more heels i wish i had some folk in here you want the only one beside me when you look ahead all you see is mountains and all you see is heels but don't stop looking looking ahead you need to learn how to look behind you because when you look behind you you see all the heels he already brought you through i wish i had some help in here you see all the mountains he already brought you through you see all the storms he already brought you through can i get some folk for a few minutes to tell your neighbor excuse me if i get excited today excuse me if i give god the glory excuse me if i give god the praise come neighbor i just had a flashback and i got a witness i had a flashback to how he woke me up this morning i wish i had some more help here i got a flashback i put food on the table i got a flashback i put shelter over my head i got a flashback to her that he forgave me and forgave me and forgave me i waited on you and forgave me and forgave him and forgave can i get somebody to lift up your voice and tell the lord thank you lord thank you lord you didn't have to make a way you didn't have to do it but i'm glad you did do me one more favor say neighbor excuse me i just had another flashback because if he died is there anybody in here that know jesus died for you but sunday morning anybody here know he got up anybody on this side no he got up if you know he got up you still sitting down for a hug can you get up on your feet something must be wrong with your legs can you wave your hand and tell him thank you thank you lord you broke me through up i should have been dead sleeping in my around he keeps on making it away can i don't want to make you dizzy can you just turn around with your pastor one time just and just say lord every time i turn around ah every time i turn around you you keep putting food on the table every time i turn around you put shelter over my head every time i turn around when i'm broke i find some money every time i turn around when the doctor say no you'll come back and say yes every time [Music] he keeps on he keeps ours [Music] he keeps on oh my goodness come on stand with me real quick we're gonna open the doors preachers come on ah nobody but you jesus nobody but you jesus nobody but you jesus listen i know we say that when praises go up blessings all to come down but can i get somebody that when blessings come down some praise ought to go prayer see when you got a real praise and you don't need no music the music helps but how many know all you got to do is have a memory to look back over your life and see all the hills and mountains that god has brought you over and if he didn't before i said if he can't before he's able to do it again can i get about 300 processors can go ahead and give god a praise right where you stand for him name this is what it's all about children of god giving our hearts our minds our soul back over to god nobody has come yet but we're anticipating that you're here we believe that you're here that you need to have an encounter with our lord and savior jesus christ the man lost something valuable he was able to get it back he lost his power he was able to get it back because he had a source of power that source of power for you and i is jesus christ because he didn't stay there in church early somebody shouted early with me early sunday morning he got up with what oh [Music] in his hand he wants that power to be made available to you right now listen the journey from your breakdown to your breakthrough is between your seat and this all time [Music] i'll say it again i said the journey from
