previously on Hard Knocks the pain of the NFL preseason continues everything I gotta make the stinking team I can't be hurt you know my ultimate goal is not to make the practice buy for the Dallas Cowboys or any other team in the NFL I want to play in this league and I want to be a good player in this league not just make it to me scuffle in the weight room Xavier and against old G yeah Xavier one that from what I understand this week the Cowboys enjoy some good clean fun before the hard knocks resumed this is not an easy time for me you know we have to tell some money that they can't do something yeah boys laugh it's pretty much just whatever it takes to get it done get it sent up to sundown can't put it into words are we gonna go through this all day just grinding trying to make it make there's so much expectation because of the history [Music] you're gonna have the pain fans gonna come some guys aren't gonna make it there's only gonna be 53 at the end it's a hard life right playing NFL football period here's what we're gonna do well come out this afternoon we're gonna go our normal special team an individual and then we're going to do a 797 and then we're gonna do a 30 to 45-minute scheme period now now after that after that we're going on a little team function no meetings tonight is that we're gonna do you come over here bring your stuff with you wear something old you don't care if it gets dirty it don't matter now there's be some girls where we're going possibly possibly hold it so use some common sense you never know you never know but hey hey hey bring some old stuff believe me with some stuff that you don't care what happens to it everybody had the same page no one had warned the players that this season being a cowboy would mean being a cowboy I think everybody was a little bit bothered with the whole situation you couldn't really see a whole lot of fun going on you know for a football team for 92 guys initially guys would say oh god what are we going to do and we had a lot of guys that aren't Ranchers [Applause] yeah yeah nice tummy from okay let's get ready for the couch if couch Robert all to win the book it's a couch if boys that's a couch if I've ever seen one don't smile back [Music] [Applause] perform and accuracy no one can toss a cow chip like coach Joe Abbas on oh it was probably one of the better performances of the evening every toss had a certain look about it if you ran it in slow motion as it came down in the ring it just fell very nicely and softly and I proceeded to go five for five [Applause] alright guys let's go ahead and get those aids going we're gonna have a little toss at the players see to it that no count chips go to waste [Applause] the final event was my favorite when we had to dress the pig into the in Washington Jersey that was that was a lot of fun reminded me of my childhood [Applause] oh my gosh [Music] [Applause] again [Applause] the best thing for me was just to watch the guys in that final event that Pitt dressing contest you know just watching the guys working together as a team trying to get that thing done and just having a good time away from football what else man it was it was crazy done that was no place for a black person dawg no whatsoever I'm serious Johnson Drew's down Paige freezed up peds armadillos people was riding cows like they will horse his dog on the tape yeah they threw some eggs that pimp pimp jump the fence dog you know his growing jacked up he jumped the fence I thought he was going to fall it was out of control [Music] nothing was stretch stretch stretch Ron run starts first time stretch stretch devran Johnson number 13 is fighting every day to stay on the roster it's a fight that often pits Johnson against his friend and roommate Pete hunter number 47 yeah okay come on Johnson catch the damn football he doesn't have anything to me that time and coaching he's not gonna cure he'll have days that you say yeah I don't know but he's so raw and green I just don't think you need to give up on this guy this is a giant step for this kid it's a giant step and he has some things there are times you go out that you send in one-on-one he does some great things he's improved tremendously from when he first started back in the mini camps a lot of his things is attention to detail hey you just made your second move way too late you got to make up your mind way earlier than ever there are times when he shows that he's coming on and there are times where and when he seems to hit a wall the hell is Deb doing again it's more mental than it is physical because it's a lack of focus a small college player with only two years of football experience Johnson has much to learn don't want him so why tighter okay a little bit closer little bit morning all right [Music] - our five yards 925 high he has to go back at night to the we are in the morning he has to burn the candle on both ends he has to go to sleep with that playbook and come out there when corrections have been made and work on those things work on the attention to detail things that I made mistakes on the day before you're on thirteen you're on it's something it's one thing repeated mistakes will not cut the mustard as a rookie Johnson is behind Randle Williams who played seven games for the Cowboys last season and to his impress the coaches this summer rocket he runs fast I mean he's on the guy like this guy explodes over the line Williams has such a quick start he literally runs right out of his shoes good one of the fastest guys ever ever seen I mean he can flat fly he has good hands I wouldn't say great hands whoa I understand the thought of the big kid who can run and cover kicks but I don't know if he'll ever be a great round runner right no okay you come out okay somewhere somehow someone has to do something extraordinary and consistently to separate himself from the pack Richmond Flowers is about to be separated from the pack but in a different way while running a routine past pattern he feels a stabbing pain in his leg hey where's Jim Richmond flowers pulled his left groin today the on a day-to-day basis there's no defect there but it's obviously something we have to make sure he can run well and not have a problem with it before we put it back into practice the injury cost flowers practice time time he cannot afford to lose he sees numbers in front of him veteran players players with a lot of speed and a lot of talent and he's starting to be overcome by that rather than just saying they're gonna be X amount of spots no one has been given a job yet outside of Galloway in Israel look at your batteries faint the IRS picnic turn and I'm screaming at you but you've got to take charge when is it two one two three and fourth like y'all want to go one two three one two three and four and that time since I told you the mistake before it's like you freaked out this time if there's a hair in your mouth and sweat dripping down your face it has to stay there you don't have to run off like there's a fire just look pretty going off and walk with pretty feet and punch you pom poms so I want you to run this twice and run all those good and if you're good you can have an early night should be ready to go okay [Laughter] [Music] when you are when you hang around talk to listen to champions I believe it rubs off I believe it rubs off I want to introduce a man to you that has been where we're trying to get he's here to sign up Xavier Collins to a contract guys a former heavyweight champion of the world George Foreman people ask me all the time you kind of walk funny George I said I walked funny because I didn't leave anything undone I wanted my championship belt I didn't want to be one of those guys who got two hundred thousand five hundred thousand invest in a trucking company and a hamburger store I wanted to be the heavyweight champion of the world and you got this splendid opportunity right now to put those rings on your finger and I don't care if you walk funny afterwards you're gonna love it but don't leave nothing undone you'll be 50 ok 39 years old like me and you'll be proud of the way you walk if you give it all you got Texas has two teams now but America has only got one you are America's team every time you win we feel better about ourselves I'm hungry for you I want to feel like a Superbowl champion I want you to win this thing wears off yeah look and next [Applause] okay Pete hunter number 47 was a small college safety the cowboys drafted him to play quarterback in the NFL good job I think I'm getting better every day they've done a lot of things at me right now and to see I'm going to handle things get him out of there 47 get his ass out of that underneath I didn't see let's go hunter give me one more try Hunter will give you one more try get over here you know what that makes me happy that makes me happy because you screwed that up yesterday and you got it right today that's good I don't like to see wrong two days in a row that's good every time I talk to the media I say we're pretty good they got a few things they do good and there's a few things we got work with look at it intelligently and you draw your line of who you're gonna keep then who are the best cover guys that we've got just pure cover forget this game now go to the rookie Pete hunter really like it excellent rookie prospect definitely keep my opinion the guy's probably got the best up side of all of them this hunter and Goodrich because of injury we don't know much about near enough about Dwayne Goodrich number 23 was once a promising cornerback but after two seasons shortened by injury Goodrich is an enigma he's not a rookie but he's not a true veteran either there's been a story for the last couple of years as well this guy he can't really stay healthy I guess like if you ask me sounds me in a playbook 9 I said 80% of the time I'm in nowhere as far as we go a linebacker safety and Horner but I get on the field and he'd be happening so fast my mind or a register that I haven't seen what it looked like was somebody ship this but speed of the page I could risk it in there is the will post you can't play when we injured but you can play through a little bit of pain so that's kind of what I'm doing now just going out there showing in that house didn't want to be here and I'm still gonna try and go out there make place it was fast nothing wrong he just does not you know consistent every single play but at times he flashes and I think if if we get him out there in some games and some situations hopefully we can see him and and make an evaluation on it was good was good rich in yourself well he looks better to me well there's a point we will be at the cutting time hurt or not on this 53-man cut we hope we hope we think we're gonna be down to that and if today we were right where we are with Goodrich today relative to these others relative to some of the others he has played what he's play let's just say we right where we are today we think he can play when he gets to play unfortunately before I came in there I just watched the last year's preseason game against Oakland and it wasn't a good game for him and so I've right now is not a good time to ask me coaches can teach technique but for a lesson in attitude sometimes it helps to bring in an expert oh you know I could do this in my sleep that's a real pass Russian right there you know a good old DVD looking good you look trim you know TV I do that for you man you get on TV get real get your ass out there I got runs a wheel it's a touchdown mrs. M I know oh no who would had an imposter that showed up on Hard Knocks the first week they might know oh my god you called everything your mama your daddy hey get out here in front of TV can I introduce you to do Nate longevity Deon works with Dwayne Goodrich and Pete hunter fine-tuning their footwork and their mental approach you waitin on yourself not to make a mistake y'all plan not to make a mistake the only plan to make place you planning not to get beat it ain't one of you right here right now it's playing knowing you're gonna go in I feel I'm gonna make a play when these lights on these people of Pakistan don't make no play like that and you know I'm telling you the truth you worried about getting big you worried about somebody getting behind how can you make a play like that who gonna step up and say I'm gonna make a play you're scared man offensive coordinator can smell fear like a shark nose blood man you gotta get your confidence up fellas but your confidence starts in practice because if you don't do it in practice they know what you're gonna do in the game somebody make a play bag somebody make a play a play don't care who make it somebody make a play and it gave me proud to cut somebody - I just want y'all know let me see you pull seven work your game I'll rip it that's nice so he was like one of my role models so I mean just seeing him out there and him coaching me to make me a better person and a better player I mean I really paid attention on him and he's been a great help with me that boy can play man he's got to get his confidence and his feet up on them then injury took a lot out of it once you hit Dianna say you kind of believe it use your extra little umph to you gain that you know just going out there and have a confidence of the whole key you got to believe on three one two three believe I know the pain ain't good enough for coaches though I would go sign some autographs sign some autographs good how you doing enjoying yourself down here beautiful all right the Cowboys first training camp in San Antonio has drawn more than 175,000 fans to the Alamo dome and they have devised some ingenious ways to get close to their heroes there you go okay write it on my shirt write whatever you want on my show you can have a job these days what time is it the Cowboys have to choose between last year's kicker tim cedar number six and rookie Billy Cundiff number three you've got to make that decision I mean I don't like it obviously I haven't liked the way we've kicked at all either one of them so I'm good sir whatever you think is best we do under coach Steve Hoffman the Cowboys have used six different place kickers in the past nine seasons cedar has held the job for two years but he knows the Cowboys will not hesitate to replace him if they feel the rookie has more potential they all understand that it's a tough business and one I'm gonna make the team one of them's not I think I've been in a lot of these places that we played in I've experienced a lot of the different types of pressures and I think that's a big plus for me keep scoring the fact that if Tim misses I know I have to make it and if Tim makes it well then I know I have to make it I said really for the most part the team's don't care who the kicker is just so the kicker can help them win it's pretty much that way in the NFL kind of has shown us a strong leg and real good range now we have to find out just how that is from a consistency factor that field will pretty I want you to drill them for me all right every time I put them out there I'm looking at how they handle pressure we try to create some of that in practice by every time we kick having the team surrounding them see if they can handle being criticized see how they take it because if they can't take to heat it practically then it's going to be interesting how they would handle with the pressure of performing on national TV etc no clear I'd just bet he misses [Applause] he finally made a nice job Williams I'm tar balls dead man walking I'm Riley let's go the Cowboys are on the road for the second week of the preseason it's time for work and for the coaches a time to rest tonight the Cowboys will play the Carolina Panthers a win would give Dallas its first two-and-oh preseason start since 1989 that was the year Jerry Jones bought the team we got a number of things that we got to get accomplished tonight now number one is to continue with a mental discipline and concentration we're gonna have a number of learning experiences we're playing on the road for the first time this year we're also gonna play in some bad weather that means we got to keep up boys there's gonna be some noise and it's gonna be some weather situation that shouldn't mean a darn thing to us all we got to do is just go out and play let's win this one let's go let's go to work let's go [Music] [Applause] we'll kick off and you get an idea of what they're thinking on this loss to what some of the young guys the big was talking about cuz they're gonna be on this kick-off unit here and generally if you get on this first kickoff unit cowboy coaching staffs thinking hey they may be on this 53-man repeat hunter number 47 special teams means double team team double team on special teams I just went all about I just ran full speed every time I was out I will say this and it's very good for Pete Hunter he was better in Game two than he was in Game one [Applause] I'm pretty slow right now but I just enjoy being out there playing to people well other than the start it's already on his helmet I wouldn't be putting a lot of stars on his helmet just yet as a reward on this August night one solo tackle would be reward enough juice going here listen how we'll get it on the kick return Randall Williams may be the fastest cowboy but not on this kickoff return but trying to be cute get out there run like hell my number one priority was just to catch the ball and make sure I didn't fumble it and then anything on top of that if I got positive yardage then been great got no feel for it he's got no feel for it or else his heart that didn't look like 4.04 speed [Applause] on kick coverage Williams shows the speed and all-out effort the coaches want [Applause] when he lines up at wide receiver that speed draws a pass interference penalty [Applause] [Music] and a guy with that size and that speed now he's not a polished receiver far from it the boy you'd like to keep him around and try to polish him up a little bit cuz he can flat fly I think I had a more energy than probably anybody I was just so excited to get on the field coaching he's telling us you know don't let him go inside and I was like that he's not going outside and I got the holding call I don't have a cheap shot anybody but the same time I'm sort of coaches are made to play but I gave myself a b-plus right now for Duane Goodrich number 23 this is a critical step on the road back Duane actually has got a lot better than last week and a half he's showing signs of life now we got to get him making plays and making tackles [Applause] I definitely miss way too many tackles and didn't didn't just play address if enough really for myself well you have to remember that Dwayne has been really basically out of football for two years hasn't played any at all and hopefully he'll be able to you know improve enough with experience of being out there to overcome those kind of things there is no one more alone than a cornerback unless it's a cornerback who has just given up a touchdown [Applause] you see Smith just runs a straight takeoff route nothing special about it you beat a guy on that route that guy's gonna cope let's check in down with Steve Dennis well I thought it interesting since good he's one of the guys fighting for a job here that after he got burned on that touchdown play there he got a cold reception on the bench not a single coach said a word to him not a single player said a word to him the only one who tried was Britt Britt Brown the assistant trainer tried to offer him water and he didn't want it so nobody talked into doing good roots down here that's like good roots go another series and go over the last one with the other guy one series one more chance for Dwayne Goodrich to prove he belongs [Applause] which showed nice recovery speed I think I got my swagger back I got my swagger back with so many injuries the Cowboys cannot afford to lose another starter but for a frightening instant it appears they do they hit slow getting up gingerly right back down and that is a terrible Sun fortunately for the Cowboys Roy Williams injury proves to be minor it happened to be the end of the quarter so he really never missed the play he was right right back out there and going after it him that's what we expect from him that's the type of player he is I know there's a lot of high expectations for me I got a lot of my other teammates looking at me see how I'm gonna have a little pressure I mean I think I'm handling good but I don't feel like I made the team into that final cut to survive the final cut a rookie has to make plays or in the case of woody Dantzler number 35 trick plays [Applause] you got a hundred and fifty two point one quarterback rating he's one for one for one touchdown in eleven yards Woody's a very versatile guy that's why he was that was his play I hope you can find a spot for him on our roster it remains to be seen because it's going to be close as a former college quarterback Dantzler is more comfortable throwing the ball than carrying it off tackle at five foot ten he is learning blitz pickup the hard way he still has to prove he can stand up to the big boys [Applause] no one feels more helpless on this night in Richmond flowers Tyson Walter and Scott Zimmermann who all stayed in San Antonio nursing injuries and watching the game on TV in the second half Chad Hutchinson replaces Quincy Carter at quarterback and finds himself in the line of fire laying behind a line decimated by injuries Hutchinson is sacked 6-times and fumbles once he's got blood coming out of his hip oh he's got blood all over his football pants they're bandage enema it really is a war out there and that's why it's such a great game because it's it is a battle and it's really you dig down deep into your soul and and and fight the fight my ankles my chest right I think it's a step in the right direction it's not as good as you think and it's never as bad as you think you know I always look at mistakes though and that's just me being the perfectionist that I am so I felt like there's a lot of loose ends that I could have cleaned up [Applause] sometimes it's a past the rookie quarterback doesn't throw that annoys the head coach most of all there was some inexperience because he was outside the fire he could have just thrown the ball anywhere he wanted to and he wouldn't have got called for grounding trying holy let me just say right now if the Cowboys got one week of training camp left and making mistakes like this they're given dave campo every reason to chew on something the game would come down to a kickers duel the veteran cedar and the rookie Cundiff get the young guy up here and see that they can handle it a good angle he has enough leg drillbit controversy no there's a little bit of a pressure kick here for Tim Cedar will be 49 yards and in his first two years in Dallas his best has been 48 good snap this time good Heaven or the with plenty of leg is good and the fight is really on in the fourth quarter Cundiff ties the game and cedar Windsor Jim cedar your serve preseason game on to the poet's home field for the first time in ten years [Applause] like this to win a tight ballgame those are just a learning experience for a football team that needs to get back to that mode of operating first of all congratulations you won the football game and that's what we came down here to do it yes sir and let me tell you something about 80 percent of the games in the National Football League or just like that and all it takes is one or two plays either way to make the difference so let's make sure we continue to work I'm going to get after you tomorrow or on Monday tomorrow you're off I'm going to get out to you now because we got a lot of things to get accomplished but congratulations on a big win because every win is big [Music] Goodrich showed good athleticism doesn't tackle real well I don't think he makes the same amount of plays that jason bell makes I think Derrick Ross would have made just as many of those plays last night that that he made probably probably wouldn't gave up the touchdown in his defense you know we played him on the right side in the first half and then moving him over to the left side in the second half and that I don't think that was real fair to him in terms of you know seeing the routes one way and then the second half the other way but I thought he did a good job making that transition playing both sides dance or six carries 14 yards I don't know whether he's the strong enough runner to consistently carry the football in this league I think he'd he'd be a pretty good pass receiver he stepped up and tried to take the Blitzer zone I think he could be that type of a protector I don't think he'd be a good run blocker in her Corvette package Deborah Johnson played eight plays it did an okay job I was pleased with his effort because this is probably probably was his best effort since he's been here Randall Williams played 18 plays I thought it he was very timid at times he never would pull the throttle and let go never did use his speed I thought he was more timid even on the special teams kick returns Randall should have been tired he had played 20 20 plays and his plays are all long distance runs he's able to help us as a team in an unusual capacity Richmond we thought best for him and us he has indicated that he would like to get an opportunity go to another team which is fair but if everybody's in agreement with Richmond we'll visit with him mr. Jones I hate to say it you got your notebooks with you take after get that is football is a game but pro football is a business teams have a schedule and on this day it does not allow roommates to say goodbye Chad Hutchinson is in a quarterback's meeting unaware that at that moment Richmond flowers is being released I went down to go to special teams meetings and then I saw the the Turk and brought me up to Jerry Jones and I saw here kind of the writing on the wall that wasn't working out and felt that I have a better opportunity if I was able to get released and keep going after it somewhere else I have a great respect that they did that because a lot of players get released there right at the end and and to just sit there and be a guy for the next two weeks it is hard to stomach and I think to be realistic with you it's gonna be hard for you to get over this 53 so I think we're for both the team and yourself we're doing the right thing here let's give you a chance to see if another team might be interested in you I just I just don't want you to think that because I felt like it was a good idea for me to to be waived it's a negative that did I didn't want to be a cowboy just I was so tense trying to prove something when I first showed up that I think it it kind of hurt me but I you know I really believe in my heart that I can play and and it's just you know it's frustrating because it didn't work out here I just cause I we're sitting here saying hey they sitting working out for us this morning that mean we're riding yeah so you keep that nice okay what's it look like you have a couple of people that are talking to you well you have that you feel comfortable that - out with I do I do think that I do I do think I'm some there's some teams that ship it they're gonna give me opportunity right I just I felt like after looking the way things are going with special teams and everything and numbers why's that you know that I was better off getting an opportunity to see if someone was tonight yeah all I could say is I appreciate your work ethic and you know the way you go about your business so you know I just want to wish you the best of luck thanks hon okay rich man thanks all right good to see ya my dad's always been there for me and you know I he's not only for my father but but my best friend and I just wanted to call him and let him know hello hello hey well I just wanted you to know they they released me so that was kind of a lifting uh kind of lifting a foot off my chest because you know how things that a guy you know I had asked for my release and and and they felt like that they wanted to give me that opportunity give me the opportunity to be picked up by somebody else you and I both know the new it we're coming didn't make some sense to me it just happened to make up their minds before training camp even come so they're gonna go with and what was so I was so concerned about was it was it wouldn't get to your your heart and your head because you're Bennett you've all your life you've been a fierce competitor and if they put you in the football game and turn the lights on nobody shines any better than you do you've done it time and time and time again and it's almost like people don't believe it he feels the same pain probably more so than I do right now you know I and I understand that and I wanted to reassure on the don't worry so far I've I've taken the dramatic route on everything I've done and I don't think that's ever gonna change but um just want to let you know I love you and don't worry about it Thanks roommate this morning but uh you know I wish him well and it's gonna find another you know team move on with his life and I was bigger and better things out two forms I wish him the best the Cowboys are unbeaten in the 2002 preseason but that's not to say the summer has been without loss once there were two sets of dreams in this room now there's only one [Music] you
