welcome back to the channel guys it's Eli Infante and in today's video we have another intermediate full edit Photoshop tutorial covering my entire process from frequency separation dodge and burn and my color grading process I am gonna be providing a raw file so that you guys can follow me throughout the tutorial if you're new to the channel I do have some dedicated tutorials that cover frequency separation my color grading process and how I sharpened my images for Instagram and Facebook the links will be in the description below but with that said we're gonna go ahead and cover though though and bevel the first thing that I'm going to do in Photoshop is I'm going to use the patch tool along with the content-aware feature to remove those too distracting pulls in the background in Photoshop I'm going to make a duplicate of the background by using my action the cleanup layer which is just a duplicate of the background and I'm gonna select the patch tool I'm gonna make a selection around the pole and there's two options to do the content-aware I can either go to edit and then content-aware fill and the advantage of going this method is that I get a preview of what's gonna happen and it also gives me a preview of where it's gonna sample from the pixel so whatever's in green is what Photoshop is going to sample to fill in this area so sometimes you don't want it to fill in from certain areas like obviously right now it's selecting the body and it might interfere with what the end result is gonna be in this case it did a good job but I'm gonna show you the second route which is a little bit faster it's the shift f5 and this is the one I use most of the time unless it does a bad job shift f5 I get an option under contents to switch it from you know white black I can change it to content aware hit okay and this usually does a great job and if it doesn't then I'll go the menu route so as you can see here it already did a good job and I'm gonna go to the opposite side now and I'm gonna get rid of this one now so I'm gonna push h4 my patch tool and I'm gonna go ahead and make a selection um shift five content-aware hit okay and push ctrl D to deselect and already I've easily removed those polls now keep in mind that it was pretty easy for Photoshop to make those adjustments because the sky is pretty much the same so it's just basically sampling from this side if I had a more complex background this is this probably wouldn't work as easy keep in mind this is the technique that I use to get rid of my softbox I get that question a lot on Instagram is how do I get rid of the softbox because a lot of times I like to get the softbox nice and close and you'll see it just a little bit in the corner of my images I use this content-aware feature to remove that now that I've got that out of the way I'm just gonna remove just a couple of distractions that are around the image there's not a lot in this specific image but I'm just gonna use the patch tool to remove some little spots to kind of just clean up the image and I'm probably gonna fast forward this part not that there's a lot but I'm just going to fast forward it as I get rid of some of these little areas the next thing I want to do is I'm gonna do frequency separation now with frequency separation I'm gonna mainly use it for the hair there's some flyaways on the top that I want to adjust and freaky separation is gonna make this a little bit easier in 2019 I was using a lot of freakin separation lately I haven't been using that much so bear with me if my frequency separation doesn't come out that great but let's go ahead and give it a try so I'm gonna go into my freakin separation action I'm gonna hit the play button here and the key step here is I'm gonna remove the texture and the color I'm gonna separate those so the numbers gonna be very important here more specifically for the hair so I'm gonna zoom in right here and the number that I'm gonna use is 16 and you'll notice that most of the hair is removed because the hair is under texture right now but you'll see some blotchy areas here that weren't removed because of the number I'm gonna use the mixer brush to make those adjustments and if you're not 100% sure of what I'm talking about right now it'll make a little bit of sense when we get into it so I'm gonna go ahead and hit OK and the hair that I want to remove is just mainly on the top I'm not gonna get rid of all the hair so I'm gonna use this little arrow bring that down and I'm gonna go under my texture layer now I know a lot of you guys might have some questions as to how do i do forgets a separation what's the point of it I have a dedicated video I'm gonna have a link in the description below that covers everything so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go to texture and I'm gonna go ahead and zoom in here so that I can see the hair and I'm gonna use the clone stamp I'm gonna have it under sample I'm gonna put current layer and I'm gonna start sampling other texture so I can get rid of the flyaways and what's cool about doing it this way the flyaways with frequency separation is that I'm not manipulating any color right now because I've separated it with that little radius number that I had at the very beginning now in a moment you gonna see some blotchy areas like here and I'm gonna show you how we're gonna fix that so don't panic I will show you how we're gonna fix that and why that's happening the same thing here all right so let me show you what was going on here if I hit the texture layer you'll notice that actually me go to some another area over here or you can actually see that the hair go away so because the hair is on the texture whenever I'm using the clone stamp I'm not pushing any color whatsoever so it's a little bit easier to get an even transition but there were some areas over here that were a little bit blotchy because when I changed my radius number it wasn't high enough to get rid of it and you could see the blotchiness here so in order to fix this blotchiness I'm gonna go to the color layer now and I'm simply just gonna use the mixer brush so I'm gonna push B and I'm pushing shift beat so I can get to the mixer brush and you can see my settings up here and all I'm gonna simply do now is I'm going to mix that color and push it in so this color blends in a little bit better and just as a reminder those of you that don't know I do have a tutorial about frequency separation on my youtube channel so everything that I'm covering I cover in detail for beginners I even have the frequency separation action for free on there as well and I want to say for the most part me undo that I got a little bit of the yellow there there we go okay so right away on the top of the hair I've got rid of all those little messy and flyaways there some of these other ones actually I don't mind I'm gonna leave those there but with frigate separation I've already got rid of the top so this was the before and then the after now I'm gonna use frequency separation under the texture to remove any kind of blemishes so I'm gonna zoom in and I'm gonna go ahead and remove these using just the Healing Brush and all I'm simply gonna do is I'm going to hold alt so I can sample texture so that I can move this texture all the way around and the reason why I'm doing frequency separation on this tutorial as I mentioned this is an image from 2019 where I was using a lot of frequency separation I don't use it that much now I mean if you're wondering why I don't do it as much it's just because I just find it easier to retouch using dodge and burn that's just a personal preference it's not to say that frequency separation is a bad thing there's a lot of people that do a really good job of frequency separation but I find it easier with dodge and burn alright so I'm gonna go ahead and fast forward the video I pretty sure most of you guys already know how to do the blemish cleanup so I'm just going to fast forward this part and then we'll continue with the mixer brush you now that I've went ahead and fixed the little blemishes I'm gonna go ahead and use the mixer brush so I can smooth a little bit of the skin and I'm gonna select my color backup I'm gonna go ahead and zoom in and now I'm gonna turn on my helper layer I might make some adjustments here let's see should I move this up I can move it up just a little bit right about there is good and I'm using the black and white just that's like a helper layer just kind of give me some assistance as I'm smoothing out some of this color so I'm gonna go ahead and go to my color backup there we go got my mixer brush and you can see my settings are at the top and I'm gonna go ahead and just slightly just make some smoother adjustments on these transitions and once again as I'm doing this I'm trying to just do a subtle effect I'm just trying to push just a little bit of those transitions just so that they are smooth I don't need it to be perfect because I'm gonna end up kind of doing like a final kind of over overview with dodge and burn I guess a nice polish so I'm not trying to get this to be like super perfect but I'm trying to get like the big areas that I want to smooth it out you all right I'm gonna go ahead and turn off my help earlier I was gonna pick the before and after of what I've done with the color so far looks pretty good I think we're probably gonna be ready for some dodge and burn I'm really ain't liking that I'm going to just fix this little arrow over here and other than that we're gonna be ready for dodge and burn all right so the next step is to do my dodge and burn I'm gonna run my new action that I've made which is right here and I'm gonna hit the play button I do have a Dodge and burn action coming soon now that I'm on spring break I'm gonna have a little bit more time so hopefully that should be my next video hopefully so I'll kind of give you like a full-on beginner level overview of what dodging burn is all about so the main thing I want to use with the dodge burn and if you've seen me on my Instagram live or a my previous full edit videos I talked a lot about using this Dodge and burn helper layer this helps and assists your dodge and burn process to make sure that it should go smooth I'm gonna go ahead and adjust the contrast of this helper layer I'm gonna zoom in here and I'm going to bring it you know what I'm gonna bring it maybe about right here and by making this kind of contrast adjustment it's gonna help me see what areas I need to blend in a little bit more so what I like to do is I like to do the Dodge first I'm gonna push shift if shift beam to get to the brush tool then I have a brush though the belem basically it's just opacity 100 flow 1% and I am using a tablet so I'm gonna try to get like the big areas first before I start zooming in too much so I usually I'll zoom in like 300 to 400 and I'm just gonna start smoothing in and making sure if I brush is set to high because I'm not gonna see anything there so I have to have my brush selected at white because I've made some curve adjustments right here with my layer mask and it's set to black so when it wherever I brush with white I'm gonna see those adjustments and what I like to do is I like to get the bigger areas first before I start zooming in too much because I used to make that mistake of zooming in too much and going in for the small minor spots first and that was a big mistake I just I'd like to get the bigger areas and then I'll zoom in more to like maybe 800 and and so forth so I can clean it up a little bit more so just to reiterate what I'm trying to do here is I'm just trying to smooth out these transitions by evening the exposure and if you're using a strobe what's cool about that is what you're really also doing is you're really kind of in in a sense already doing the dodge and burn with your strobe light I'm going to go ahead and use the burn you'll notice that some areas right here are a little bit too bright so I'm gonna kind of smooth these out ever so slightly and I'm gonna burn just a little bit from the nose I'm gonna switch back to my Dodge okay that is do not and this kind of see what I have so far so I'm gonna take this off it's always good to take a break and kind of see what you've done so far this is before and after just small adjustments I'm liking that in the burn as well I'm gonna hold alt on the Dodge so you can see exactly where I dodged so that's where I've been dodging so far and this is where I've been burning at this point I'm gonna go ahead and fast forward the video because I'm assuming most of you already know what dodging burn is like so I'm gonna go ahead and fast forward I'm gonna be constantly making adjustments to my contrast dodging burned layer just okay I can make the area's a little bit more noticeable as I'm dodging and I'm burning you now that I'm done with the the face or at least most of it I'm gonna start looking around on the other parts of the skin so I can make those adjustments so I'm gonna be adjusting the helper layer once again the contrast so that I can see those areas a little bit better you okay so I'm done with most of my dodge and burn I'm gonna take a last look here to kind of see what looks good and do I need to make any further adjustments and I'm checking both my dodge and my burn let's take a look at the before and then the after before after you zoom out let me see what the figures of separation - and I think what I want to do is I want to burn back just a little bit more on the forehead just ever so slightly just so I can bring back a little bit of that shape that's about it okay and I'm just gonna take one last look what do we got and let me come up here I do want to burn a little bit up here alright I'm gonna go ahead and make some more dodge and burn layers so this dodge what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna dodge the hair to make it pop just a little bit more I'm gonna change the flow to about four sometimes I'll change to five so I'm gonna basically brush in areas that already have the highlights and this will kind of add a nice little shine to the image [Music] and I might add one maybe just a little bit right here maybe a little bit right here on the cheekbone a little bit on the nose a little bit on the lips right there where else this may be a bad one a little bit right there and let's take a look at the before and after so I'm just gonna go before after before after it's gonna give you that little bit of a pops I'm also gonna zoom in here to the eyes and I'm gonna add just a little bit of light into those eyes I'm also gonna make like a big overall brush to kind of brush in those eyes and I'm just adding like a little bit of exposure to the eyes and I'm probably going to make I'm gonna make a new layer I'm gonna get the brush tool set it to white I'm gonna make those catch lights pop just a little bit more I'm gonna click once right here double click my layer two so I know I did that kind of fast and we kind of rewind here so all they did is I made a new layer got the brush tool set it to light I'll pass 300 flow 100 just literally just brushing with a light brush I'm gonna double click in under layer two so that I can get my blending options and what I want to do is I want to use the blend if so I'm gonna use the underlying layer so which is the dark spots I want it to be removed from the blacks and the shadows so that I can only get that bright spot only on that catch light there I'm going to hold alt right here and this is going to fade that little catch light right about there and hit OK I'm going to go ahead and erase the outer parts my push-me on the keyboard and the reason why I did that is that now as I brush that little white brush it's only in the bright area cuz I used to blend if there we go and I'm gonna go ahead and brush over here as well there's a little bit of that catch light that I want to bring back and I'm gonna lower the opacity let's go to maybe like let's go 65 I think that should be good and easy amout make sure it looks good I think it's a little too much so we're gonna bring it down to like 40 see you before after yeah that looks good I'm gonna copy that over cuz this catch light you really didn't see too much so I'm gonna make a duplicate of this one I'm gonna move it over oh I did that wrong I'm gonna make a new layer use the clone stamp make sure it's on all layers I'm gonna hold alt grab that catch light and brush it over on this catch light bingham there we go so now we got to catch lights they're perfect too so let me grab these shifts and then ctrl G and then I'm gonna name this catch like alrighty so let's see how does that look so overall Museum in a little bit more so we can see the skin so I'm gonna do local dodge and burn I'm gonna hit this little eyeball before after before and then after and let's take a look at the image overall to start from the very beginning we did layer one which was removing the pulse then I did frequency separation and then I did dodge and burn and I think we're ready to get on to the color grading and the other parts of the image but I'm gonna take a little quick break I'm gonna get a little bit of water break and then we're gonna continue on the image alright now that the image is ready to go I'm gonna focus on my background I love the colors in the background but I really want to make those colors pop a little bit more than they are so I'm gonna use selective color which is one of my favorite color grading techniques for my colors so I'm gonna go ahead and go to the adjustments down here and I'm gonna go to selective color the settings that I'm going to add are under the Reds cuz we hear we have a lot of reds and yellows so under reds what I had chose was negative 12 under magentas we're gonna go to 21 yellows we're gonna go to 21 and then under blacks we're gonna go under 18 so let's just look at what it's done already so already with just the Reds it's already done a great job now keep in mind as I'm making these adjustments I'm just looking at the background you can see that on the skin it's adjusting that I'm gonna use a layer mask in a moment to get rid of that we're also gonna go to yellows and what I used was 88 on the blacks so I went all the way to 88 and then I went 18 under magentas I went 15 and under cyan it's gonna be 16 so let's click the before and then the after so the colors look really faint before I did the selective color and now those colors really pop let me kind of zoom out there so before and then the after him now the next thing we need to fix is right now it's all so this is the kind of a global adjustment when you do the Selective color it's going to add this white layer mask essentially saying that this adjustment is going to the overall image so now I'm gonna make a selection below on the second half of the image so that I can only mask it in under the top so I'm gonna get the selection tool I'm gonna make a selection and there we go and what I'm gonna do now that I have this selection I'm gonna push shift f5 and I'm gonna change it to black so it can basically erase that little adjustment that I did where the area is selected and now I just have it on the background now there's some areas that are still need some fixing there so now I'm just gonna use the brush tool and I'm gonna set it to white and I'm gonna brush in that effect only in those little areas right about there there you go and fix these areas over here and that's pretty much it so let's take a look at this the background once again so before and then the after before and the after so that takes care of the background now I'm going to use another selective color go to selective color skin tone and I'm gonna mainly adjust the Reds and the yellows for the skin tone and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna switch it to reds and for the Reds what I selected was basically to two and then two and then under yellows actually let me zoom in so you guys can see those adjustments I know some of y'all left some feedback that you wanted me to zoom in when I was doing this you're not gonna see much of a change on this one you'll notice it's not much but I'm gonna go under yellows and you will see a little bit more the skin tone actually came up pretty good to start off so I didn't have to make that much of adjustments to skin tone but this is the before and then the after very very very subtle you don't really see much of a difference so very very subtle under the Selective color for the skin tone what I am gonna do though is I'm gonna press ctrl I to invert this mask so it turns black and I'm only gonna brush in that adjustment on the skin tone so I'm gonna get the brush tool and I'm gonna brush this in on the skin only so I'm using the I press control eyes that I can make this black so that that effect was not showing up anywhere then I got the brush tool I set it to white so I can only brush over the skin so that adjustment that I just made is only showing under those areas now when I brush this in I don't have to be super picky when I'm brushing it in because it's only adjusting it in the Reds and the yellows and there we go let me go to these areas down here and over there perfect and we get this little part over here if I push the backslash it'll show me where I'm actually brushing so I'm gonna fix this I'm gonna fix that and as I mentioned I don't have to be super picky because it's only gonna pick up this adjustment only in the Reds and the yellows because that's what I made a lot of the adjustments yeah let me just clean this up right here why not even though it's a pipe doing much there we go all right so let's see what we got so far so we got just a subtle adjustment on the skin tones and we got some of the background adjusted the next step was using my color balance so I'm gonna make a color balance layer and under the mid-tones I went on the Reds I went one the highlights you zoom in right here so you guys can see hopefully some of these adjustments under highlights I did negative 2 on the yellows because this image has a lot of yellows from what she's wearing and the background so I went negative 2 and then under the shadows and went negative 2 on the cyan and negative 2 on the yellows as well so let's click the before and in the after once again very very subtle it did make some adjustments to the skin a little bit because keep in mind that the skin has the Reds and the yellows mainly in it so when I switch the highlights to negative 2 it really made that skin pop a little bit so I'm gonna leave it back at negative 2 there we go and so let's take a look at the before and after so I'm going to hold alt before and then after so far this is what we've done before and then the after next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna merge everything and we're gonna make some adjustments using Camera Raw built into Photoshop Sime gonna hit the play button it's gonna basically make a duplicate layer and merge everything and put it on top all right so in Camera Raw in a double click right here I already saved the action or not the action but the preset that I actually used for this image so I'm gonna go ahead and load that up and then we're gonna look at the settings that I used to apply so we're gonna go here load settings and then I think it was YouTube here it is alright so here what I did is I went to exposure and I added plus five shadows eight blacks plus three clarity one and vibrance and saturation I left it down now keep in mind with these numbers that you see here each image is going to be different so don't think you could just copy this and it's gonna get you the same results under the HSL luminance I had two and five under the reds and oranges saturation I had the yellows at negative three blues negative three Purple's negative 3 and then hue I left it at zero split toning I added under the highlights for under saturation and the hue I used 177 shadows 36 in the saturation at two green I put 10 and then camera calibration I left it at negative 2 negative 2 plus 3 negative 2 negative 6 and plus 6 so I'm gonna click the cycle between before and afters that you guys can maybe see the subtle differences it's not really a big difference it's just a subtle difference but you'll see more of the difference in the skin tone just a little bit ok I think before I do send this image off one of the changes I am gonna make is I would like to see a little bit more saturation in the image so I'm actually gonna bump this up to like 6 and then I'm gonna hit OK the next thing that I'm gonna do is I'm gonna add a little bit of contrast to the bottom part of the image I did get some light spill on the bottom here and over here so I have this contrast global action and when I hit the play button I'm gonna go ahead and just use the brush tool 100% opacity hundred-percent flow and under contrast it's already set to black and with the white brush selected I'm only going to brush in that darkness and that contrast what I want which is definitely down here and over here as well and the reason why I'm doing this is because I want to control where the eyes are gonna go in the image if the area on the bottom is bright what my eyes are gonna want to go over there and so that's why I'm darkening up those sections is so that our eyes are more focused on the subject so if I hit this little eyeball I can kind of see the before and then the after I'm also gonna lower down the opacity I don't want it to be too dark so I'm gonna probably put it like that round mm maybe 22 click the eyeball to see the before and after and we're pretty much set there now what I want to do is I want to add a little bit of pop to the highlights and in order to do that I'm gonna zoom in so you guys can see this is in order to see the pop in the highlights I'm gonna use something called the levels and I'm gonna use blend if with it because I want to add highlight pop to the I don't know what I'm saying I'm basically got highlights to the the face so I'm gonna use levels and right here you have the histogram and I'm gonna go to the highlight slider and I'm gonna bring this in to maybe around 246 now the problem with this when I do this is that it's a global adjustment it's doing it to the overall highlights and it's even brightening up some areas like the mid-tones and even some of the shadow areas down here so that's a problem I just wanted to apply to specific highlights and in order to control that we're going to use the blend if option so now that I've made this adjustment I'm gonna go into here this little layer in this little blank spot double click and we did this earlier in the tutorial I'm gonna get the layer styles and under here I'm gonna have the blend if options down here so before I do this I do want to zoom in because I want you guys to see what's gonna happen here so right about here looks good and I'm gonna double click and what I'm gonna do is right here it's basically the blending down here if I dragged this down you're gonna start to notice or you should notice okay so I had to make some adjustments to my levels in order for you guys to see the kind of blend if effect so I kind of had to redo just a couple of things because I really want you guys to see what's happening here so I did change my adjustment the highlights at 2:38 I'm gonna go ahead and go back I'm gonna double click over here and when I'm in these blending options here what it's basically saying is I want to remove those highlights from my shadows so when I drag it to the right what you're gonna notice is that those highlights adjustment that I just made is gonna start fading off from the highlight and you can see right there you start seeing this darkness show up so it's removing those highlights from those mid-tones because I didn't want it there to begin with I mainly wanted it to be around this range here around 125 but I do want to fade it cuz you're starting to see like this kind of pixelation here so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna hold alt and I'm gonna fade that off and you can even see on the face how it faded a little bit so I'm gonna bring that back so look how it fades on the face right about there so I'm gonna put it at let's say 60 let's go 60 and we'll hit OK so now what I'm gonna do is if I look over here if I hit the before and then the after so you have it kind of added that nice little pop on the skin on the highlights where I specifically wanted not a global adjustment but to the specific highlights where I controlled using the blend if so that's super super powerful I think blend if is one of the most underrated tools in Photoshop so even though I did do that I don't want it to add to the background so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna press ctrl I on this mask and I'm gonna go in here and I'm gonna brush in white just on the face and I might do it on some of these areas over here on the skin not on the hand because the hands gonna be too bright so now that I've only done it on the face if I click the before and then the after I've went ahead and made that adjustment now I did make those numbers a lot higher than I wanted here what the 138th I'm gonna bring that down I only brought it up that high so that you guys could see the transitions from shadows to highlights when I was making that blend if adjustment so I'm gonna kind of not get too cute here and I'm gonna go around to 45 so before and then after let me zoom in for those of you that want to see this before and then the after super super cool so we're almost done with this image we are on to the last couple of steps so let's finish this off the next thing is I kind of wanted to finalize the colors a little bit so I'm gonna go into the Selective color and actually already have an action for this I'm gonna go selective color luminosity so basically what this does is it's selective color but we're gonna just adjust the luminosity luminosity values in the Selective color so under reds what I did is I made some adjustments I went to eight I went to five under magentas seven and then five under yellows I went to three seven six and then five and so let's take a look at the before and after he just brings back a little bit of that richness of that color back into the image so before and then the after before and then after then I used my other action which is the red loom action and I'm gonna hit this play button and this does a good job of making some of the highlights pop a little bit more so if i zoom in you'll see a little bit of this difference before and then the after now it is sometimes a little bit too strong and of effect so in this case I'm gonna maybe change it to about 45 when I go ahead and zoom out let's take a look at the before and after I always one little tip guys is that I always like to not merge my layers because I always like to compare it to the very beginning stage of the photograph the editing process so I like to always go alt and then click the background there so this is the before and then this is the after before and then the after just to kind of see am i pushing things a little bit too much and then to finish it off what I did is I came in to my selective color and I came under my yellows and I went negative 7 under my yellows 1 and then 2 just to add a little bit color back into the skin tone because I felt like the skin tone wasn't popping enough I just wanted to pop just a little bit more and even though this is a global adjustment it didn't really affect too much of the colors because it's really just targeting just the yellows to finish the image off I'm just gonna add just a little bit of sharpening to the eyes so I'm gonna go into my details pop sharpen action I'm gonna hit the play button I'm gonna go ahead and zoom in and I'm just gonna sharpen up your eyes just ever so slightly maybe a little bit of the eyebrows and that's pretty much it guys just take a look at the before and after one more time so before and after okay and I'm gonna zoom in for those of you that want to see the color adjustments and maybe some of the skin retouching so before and then the after so one of the things I like to do at the very end is to just double check my dodge and burn to kind of add like a final polish of the overall image now this is optional you don't have to do this and I don't do this to all of my images but I do like to just do it just to double check if there's any areas that I might have missed or might have made some mistakes so I'm gonna go ahead and run my Dodge and burn action I did group everything into a smart object so I'm gonna go ahead and just play the Dodge and burn 2020 and now that I have it in black and white I just look at the overall image and I'm not gonna go ahead and dodge and burn right now but you kind of get the overall idea there's some areas right here that I'd probably clean up some areas right here as well so those are just some areas and I probably could smooth out the forehead just a little bit here and those are just some areas that I would kind of finalize go in and kind of polish up a little bit and that's it for my
