[Music] so [Music] so [Music] in this baseball centennial year today's game from wrigley field in chicago the philadelphia phillies versus the chicago club from wrigley field chicago this is kurt gowdy to call the play by play for you tony kubeck is standing by and he's going to be visiting with the cub manager leo deroser the cubs had a ten and a half game late earlier this season lead now a sliced to four they've had a tough week they lost a tough one yesterday uh four runs in the ninth inning for the phillies as the phillies beat them also the cardinals are on the move now the cardinals are won nine out of ten and when you're talking about the pennant race in the eastern division you've got to remember the defending national league champions the cardinals too it's going to be jenkins pitching for the cubs today rick wise for the phillies but let's get down and find out more about this exciting east division penetration and national league and here's tony you kurt leo today you've got your stopper going i know he whitey ford our ball club we knew we're going to get a good ball game pitch you got ferguson jenkins some kind of pitcher tony i mean this fella here has a fine fastball a good curve good slider good change of pace and a fine competitor he's like whitey ford was uh he comes out there and he believes and it's the same as sandy kovacs when he walks out there he believes he's going to beat you that's what kind of a picture he is leo a little while ago we had a tape of the near-no-hitter by tom severs and kirk gotti and i were talking to you just a little while ago you're off you said you never saw anybody throw that hard that's uh outside of kovacs herb score mcdowell at their very best have i ever seen anyone come close to stever uh on wednesday night that's the best i've ever seen him pitch uh we were talking again to santo and that about the ball club and there's pressure at this stage and the pressure's going to become more intense getting into that second half how are your players reacting what are you doing to keep them loose well you try to keep them loose tony you know that you've been through this uh you try to keep them loose i'd rather have it now than later in september i'd rather have them but i think they're a little tight now they're afraid to make a mistake but they won't make too many mistakes i don't think from now on this is too good a ball club and uh i wish that the i know the fans here in chicago are for the ball club i wish the uh some of the writers would be form as much as the fans are we talked to ron sando about that a while ago and of course this is the best best thing that ever happened to baseball one of them leo this town has just gone wild the bleacher bums and all else and they've supported this club like nothing else well of course they uh i don't say this is the overall picture tony for the riders but there are some writers who uh are really picking out little things and after all they're major league ball players and i think they're going to let off a little steam once in a while and it doesn't mean that they're enemies or anything else they will play as a unit there's 25 men and believe me they're all friendly on this ball but there are no enemies here on this club a couple articles i read it made it sounds like you haven't made a right move all year well you did something right so far i know you did i know the players are doing it right and if they can do it right that's good enough for me leonardo thank you so much i appreciate it and i know the umpires are waiting for you up there to bring the lineup card have a good day and have a good rest of the year thank you tony very much nice being with you thank you leo baseball's game of the week will continue from wrigley field as the chicago cubs meet the philadelphia phillies here's the lineup now for the philadelphia phillies third base will be tony taylor and that is going to be the pitcher in the background for the chicago cub ferguson jenkins the second base is cookie rojas larry heisel is in center field batting third first baseman is rick joseph the left dealer is john briggs the short stop is don money the right dealer will be ron stone the catcher is mike ryan batting eight and pitching is rick wise six wins six losses a lineup in the batting order for the philadelphia philly this is a famous bleacher crowd here and chicago that calls themselves the bleacher bums on the mound there's wise warming up for the phillies and this is the batting order he's going to face don kessinger will be the shortstop for the cub glenn beckert will be at second base billy williams in right field ron santo at third base ernie banks is at first base willie smith in left field randy hundley is the catcher jimmy qualls in center field and the pitcher is ferguson jenkins batting order of the cubs we've already had the meeting at home plate and the cubs are breaking on the field now ladies and gentlemen our national anthem and sing as jack kearney plays our national [Music] anthem [Music] [Applause] setting up defensively ernie banks at first base for chicago glenn becker the second don is the shortstop ron santo at third cubs are shaking up their outfield they have willie smith in left field put the rookie jimmy falls in center they bench don young and i moved billy williams to right field he's been playing left field all year the catcher is randy hundley and ferguson jenkins the strikeout leader of the major leagues is on the mound he's struck out 150 this year he's averaged just under eight strikeouts for every nine innings he finished second in the national league the last two years in strikeouts jim bunning led the league in 67 and bob gibson the leader last year and this man is the only pitcher in the majors who is a 20 game winner in both 67 and 68 a canadian he studies delivery in slow motion we'll break it down a little bit later on there's his record and he's earned run average and the first batter he's going to face is going to be tony taylor who's batting 260 no homers 12 rbis for the philly they play him straight away with sano in tight at third fluffs the button at the ball to him just underway on our nbc game of the week the breeze today is from third to first and it is hot here in chicago thinker ball one on one the 1-1 pitch is a bunt pushed by the pitcher and he's safe he beats it out kissinger made a good play on it but taylor beats it out and he's on one of those bang bang plays kurt fergie jake and broke to the right a little bit he did not have a chance it was an excellent bunt by taylor he pushed it right by him that kessinger let me correct myself becker charging him from second [Applause] ed sudah is a home plate umpire lee wire at first harry wendell stepped to second and ken burkhart at third cookie rojas batting 246 one homer 16 rbi play him a shade to the opposite field back to the mound the kessinger for one on the first easy double play well we have two down now nobody on and up for the phillies is a rookie larry high school who's hitting 274 with 12 homers 36 rbis and heisel from the middle of june right now until this game has been hitting at a 3 48 flip the coaches are billy demarjus first and george myette foghorn george over a third for the phillies ball hammered in the left field through the hole willie smith back in with it so the pills have had two hits but a double play sandwich between isil's on first a good base dealer he swiped 11 out of 14 this year jenkins is very quick he's got some basketball experience kurt and uh traveled with the globetrotters for a while he's very quick has a pretty quick move to first base he can move around and feel this position very well rick joseph batting cleanup hitting 325 two homers 25 rbis phillies have had a very interesting season with all the freakish over richie allen a ball then they lost allison they lost about half their ball club with injuries or his service calls and then alan suspended and they've won 10 games in a row on the road they've been winning they have an exceptionally uh high number of rookies on their team ten ten rookies in this squad in earnest park today but only 23 players are too short outside for a ball we're in the top of the first inning no score phillies have two downs larry heisel at first a couple of years ago in the carolina league heisel stole 31 faces in 32 attempts there he goes and it's a basement in the left field is rounding second heading for third and the phillies have runners on first and third they've had three hits ascending two down and coming up now is johnny briggs with two homers yesterday briggs batting 212 as eight homers 27 runs batted in he didn't hit a home run in april or may he got three in june and he stepped up the pace this month he's hit five this month of july being played around toward right runners on first and third two down a high fly deep left willie smith calling forward and oh they got the ball they collided out there two runs are in and on the way to third base is johnny briggs willie smith called for that ball you saw him raise his arm and the collision was rookie jimmy paul let's watch it with tony kubeck willie smith got over on the ball and he was calling for it all the way you saw him wave off the center fielder quads now watch he'll have the ball in his glove and he'll just get nipped by balls and knock it off remember that the bleacher bumps kurt who are the big help and egging these players on are right in that area behind them in left center field and left field and that may have been a case where they heard them they may have been yelling and saying go and get it and they couldn't hear each other calling for the ball all right tony they're holding up the game somebody leaned over the wall out there and dropped the cap and jimmy falls flips it back into the bleachers well the cubs lost the game against the mets with a dropped uh line drive and a fly ball that looped in with don young in center field and ferguson jenkins lost a heartbreaker in that one grocer still moaning about that game and now he'll have to get the scoring it is rule charged at error against willie smith a costlier two unearned runs in our third base is johnny briggs and the cubs have lost six six and a half games in their lead and as other clubs gather momentum as plays like that that can really bother a manager right grocer's been on both sides he managed the 42 cub dodgers they had 104 victories and lost the pennant as the cardinals overtook them and then in 51 13 and a half games out deroser managed the giants to a win [Applause] so he knows how it is both ways to sit in that dugout and overtake a club and also blow a lead independent race hurt that wind is blowing here from left to right just slightly a little bit of a breeze the ball was being blown away from willie smith the left feeler and he was playing down the line a little bit for briggs he had a long way to run and he got to the ball and he just got it knocked out of his grass two balls two strikes phillies have had three hits one was a bunt the other two are ground balls that just made it through really really haven't wrapped jenkins around here's a pitch it's the ground ball a second becker throws him out to retire this guy and in the first inning the phillies had two runs three hits one costly cub error and one man left at the end of the first half inning the score the bills two and the cubs coming to bat the phil set up defensively with rick joseph first base cookie rojas the second standing on the bag flanking him has done money to shortstop and tony taylor at third johnny briggs in left field larry heisel in center ron stone in right mike ryan the catcher and rick wise is the pitcher this is his first start since june 18th due to military duties he rejoined the phillies a few days ago and have pitched once and released two scoreless innings against the cardinals on july 8th he's won six he's lost six and earned run average is 2.73 the national league all-star shortstop don kessinger leading off adding 294 with three homers 40 rbis kessinger made himself into a swift hitter which moved him from a low average hitter into the top echelon strike one to kessinger i heard that kept kessinger in the big leagues he tried at one spring training and uh was hitting the ball fairly well and then he dropped the idea and they got into the beginning of a season in about may or june and leo said why don't you try switch hitting he tried it again he's been successful with it strike on that outside corner nothing in two to kessinger becker frondecken and billy williams cubs are trailing two nothing batting in the last of the first innings playing kessinger just about straight away [Applause] there's beckert on deck kessinger set a major league record a few weeks ago by playing in 54 consecutive airless games at shortstop breaking chico caracal's record set back in 1951 so he's done it with a glove and with a bass this year two strikes on him [Applause] one and two kurt the normal thing for a fan to think about the cubs is their power and they have that with sam that's leo deroser but one of the big things in this ball club has been the play of kessinger and becker around that second base bag big hopper hit the tony taylor and there's one away for the cubs in the last of the first inning glenn becker missed over three weeks with a fractured thumb he was out from june 6th to july 1st he hasn't seen the bother he's batting he's bounced back and since his return he's hit 378 in the last 11 games seasonal average is 305 he has no homer 16 rbis [Applause] all one deroser was moaning about becker not being named to the all-star team but he was out nearly a month felix mion of atlanta will be the starting second baseman for the national league next week from tuesday and washington the strike game that mvc will be televising tuesday night july 22nd the nation's capital will start at 7 30 eastern daylight time ball two two and one one out nobody on philly's leading two to nothing on deck billy williams the ball game yesterday kurt becker got hit in the head he got hit in the batting helmet and he wanted to remove him for the game but he wouldn't leave right back to the box two down very quickly for the cubs here in the last of the first innings and here's the iron man of the majors coming up right now billy williams [Applause] coaching today for the cavs joe amalfitano on your right at first base on the split screen is berlin arub walker coaching at 30 as a brother for the new york mets al rube walker they're both call rube berlin rube walker and al rube walker [Applause] strike one to billy williams billy williams 909th consecutive game ball won strike one he broke stan musial's national league record last sunday they had a big day for billy here billy williams day this is and he really came through usually when you have a day for a player he's he has a bad day but he came through with five hits and a double header there's a drive out in the right field and it is off the glove of ron stone williams on fur you saw stone got his glove on it but said hold on you could see willie's he hit the ball in the fist it was a slider by wise that caught him on the handle of the bat it wasn't hit real well stone making a valiant attempt to catch this ball and the ball looked like it he would have got it on the short hop had he kept possession of it [Applause] ellie williams get the single ron stano has now taken over the leadership of the national league from his teammate ernie banks who was leading most of the year in rbis panel batting 296 17 homers 77 rbis call one well we've got some players in the majors this year we're going to have quite a few tony over 40 and they keep going in the 50s and home runs and up around 130 40 50 rbis arm and killer leads the majors in rbis with 90 already right back to the box the line drive thanos out throw the cuff no run one hit no one left into the first inning it's the phillies two and the cubs nothing this game is authorized under television rights granted by major league baseball solely for the entertainment of our audience in any publication reproduction free transmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of major league baseball is prohibited down money to philly shortstop we'll start it off in the top of the second adding 246. for a stone ryan and why is the bottom of the order stone hitting 230. do nothing fills is the ball changed up on him that's one of the best pitches that ferguson jenkins has he has an excellent change of speed on both his fastball and his breaking pitches he has good control of those pitches he isn't overpowering with a fastball he tries to hit the little black border on the plate a little bit low with that one two and one ron stone born in corning california lives now in stockton california he's acquired by philadelphia from baltimore and it prayed for catcher clay dalrymple in january of 69. there's a site two and two mike ryan on deck and the pitcher rick wise mike bryan nice pitch first strikeout mike ryan batting 215 with nine homers 34 rbis ferguson jenkins today is pitching against his old club this is the ninth pro season for jenkins he began in the phillies organization in 62 and the cubs as that turned out made a great trade fouled back in april of 66 jenkins and adolfo phillips came from the phillies along with john hernstein for larry jackson and bob buell and the cubs picked him up a young consistent winner and now a 20-game winner the last two years and looks like he'll do it again this year to mike ryan one out nobody on the phillies are ahead two to nothing in the top of the second tony they've changed ryan up they've opened him up there and also they're trying to get him to chop down on the ball and just chop away at us well they feel a little uppercut swing unless you have extreme power it's a useless uh swing kirk because you can hit those high fly balls to the outside didn't shop quite enough that one two and two yeah you're talking about that trade against ferguson jenkins how about that one with his battery mate randy hundley here's a fellow that's probably the best year in his career he doesn't make the all-star team as far as being voted and i'm sure he'll be there but you got johnny bench having a great year jake uh hundley's having a good year himself area is behind the plate cubs outstanding young receiver randy hundley pounding ball out to second base glenn becker to ernie banks in their two down silly pitcher rick wise coming up and he's got an average of 294 he's a good hitting pitcher today's game of the week being brought to you in living color on nbc where you see the best in baseball every week two down nobody on a slinker ball at jenkins strike one the top of the order tony taylor on deck [Applause] off stanos glove trickling into left field they're wearing out a spot out there between third and short those phillies with those ground balls that's a hit rick wise has the fourth hit for the phillies all singles top of the order now and taylor who pushed the bunk to the right side and beat it out his first time taylor batting 262. wise at first two down philly's two cubs nothing top of the second all into him a line drive to jenkins that was good no runs one hit no airs one left at the end of an inning and a half it's the phillies two and the cubs nothing here's the slow motion of that last line drive talk about the batter danger look at this one tony watch those reflexes on fergie jenkins look at the perfect feeling position he's in kurt he's got those legs in good square positions so he can go in either direction had his eye on that ball all the way and if that ball was coming in probably at 90 miles per hour when he threw it imagine what it was going at going back out uptown they want ernie banks to hit one and banks of batting 263. 14 homers 70 runs batted in for the eternally young man well i want to tell you it is hot here today ernie banks is 38 years old and he's the oldest non-pitcher in the major so outside of the pitches right now you're looking at the oldest [Music] player in the major league [Applause] not to him though [Applause] crown ball a shortstop don money takes his time and throws him out there's one down willie smith batting 303 seven homeowners 18 rbis he used to be a pitcher in the detroit organization he's played for the tigers the angels the indians prior to coming to the cubs came here for luke johnson june of last season track day changing from a pitcher to an outfielder this is bill rigney that made that move over california he was a pitcher when he came over the fact when i was still in the american league and i had a pretty good breaking ball [Applause] foul back strike two he can also play first base rigney used him for pinch hitters when he wasn't pitching he got some hits and he got the idea well you can hit that while you're gonna play every day for me there's randy hundley on deck one out nobody on the phillies are ahead two to nothing the cubs batting in the last half a second ball one strike two they're deep and about two steps toward right for willie smith why strikes out his first batter two down for the cubs randy hundley batting 287 with 13 homers 42 rbis outside doing randy bourne still is in martinsville virginia he's the cubs player rep in fact we have two player reps facing each other right now as a strike rick wise is the player representative of the phillies coming out on decker's jimmy falls and wise at the age of 23 as one of the youngest player reps in the majors quite a tribute to him oh so tony you might explain to the fans just what the duties are of a player rep well kurt there are a lot of problems of course that arise uh that a ball player has and they meet during the all-star game during the world series and before the season and discuss some of the problems as far as improving conditions in park improvements to pension benefits etc bow back but he's a kind of a fellow that the rest of the players have to have some confidence right they do you've got a problem whether your wife had a baby and you want to know where do i send the insurance for him to claim this he'll tell you right where and he sits down and they iron out a lot of problems it's really kind of a thankless job they do a lot of traveling they don't get the off days they're doing a lot of work but boy you've got to be a dedicated person fellows like wise and hundley of course are just that they do a good job two and two pitch to randy hundley hi ball three i know some of the fans are asking out as a player rep get paid well they get their traveling expenses and i think uh it used to be 500 when i was active kurt and i don't think many of them saw that from the players pension fund but i think they do pay him a little bit dude nobody on the three two fits to hundley looped in the right field may drop in it's a base hit for hundley paul took a sharp bounce and nearly squirted away from ron stone out there and right the hunley's on with a two-hour single [Music] and jimmy qualls the boy that broke up siever's perfect game in new york the other night he's a swiss hitter 22 years old lives in pilar california not too big 510 155 he's an infielder of the future for the cubs and also he's good enough defensively that they put him out in the outfield he started with a cub organization when he was just 17. getting 250 no homers four rbis foul back phillies are ahead two to nothing cubs are batting in the last of a second wise looks like he's got a pretty good fastball today kurt it's a real hot day the pitcher can get loose and uh remains to be seen if he can continue for nine innings curve is fouled off nothing in two the jimmy calls her we mentioned briefly in connection with wise in the player reps baseball's pension plan i think if a young boy getting out of high school or college and has some athletic ability and wanted to channel him into baseball he couldn't do anything wrong by doing that because the pension plan is so good and of course you got traveling all over the country and it's just a wonderful life ball one you know they always say uh traveling is education over the years broadcasting the major leagues i've been amazed to see the young fellows come out of little towns or farms wherever they are and how two or three years of travel in the big leagues really polishes them up a one-two pitch two and two look at kuba i wasn't gonna mention me but i was i was thinking a fella that works with us on occasion mickey mantle came out of commerce oklahoma when you start talking to the members of the press and tv and the people you meet different businesses all over the country i just said he acquired a lot of policies one example there's that they hit the left by squalls laughing it by the third baseman tony taylor though the cubs have runners on first and second two downs ferguson jenkins padding 0.85 coming up there's the cheering section led by the cheerleader out there that was dick thelma in the bullpen leading them on and they rehearsed before the ballgame i think we've mentioned this before on the game of the week kurt but they do pizza power cheers for ron santo and you name it and they've got them all jenkins up two down runners on first and second the cubs are trailing two to nothing last to the second all won the chickens [Applause] ripping away a fastball one-on-one that second base is hundley at first base is qualls [Applause] outside two and one here's the piston if it's anywhere near the place james will probably have a pretty good cut he's looking fastball all the way he's ahead of the pitcher in this situation two and two to jenkins [Applause] two down runners on first and second foul back yesterday in the national league the phillies beat the cubs seven to five montreal eleven the mets four houston 13 cincinnati two the cardinals who won nine of their last pin defeated the pirates six to one and it was a giant six to dodgers four last night and ten innings atlanta beat san diego six to three [Applause] cubs lead the miss by four the cardinals by 10 in the east division it's a base hit the right field here comes only the ball booted on the right floor by stone going over the third as fall [Applause] so jenkins helps himself with a big hit to right randy hundley scored walls raced to third we'll see if we get the scoring whether they have charged stone with an error allowing walls to go to third or not i didn't see an error sign flashed out on the board i guess not well holly was coming all the way his third base coach walker was waving him on they were going to challenge the arm of ron stone in right field and first stone charging the ball very hard he knew he had to pick the ball up cleanly and make an accurate throw and get rid of the ball quickly to do it that was the only way he could have gotten only so it's now two to one philly two down runners on first and third and don kessinger up at the top of the cup batting order the ball going there's one thing about this ballpark and i think you it'll remind you a lot and does uh park you did a lot of broadcasting in fenway park a team is never out of a ball game in this park you can get seven eight runs behind and i don't care who's pitching the balls can fly out of here right the one opens all too that's the minimum part the fans are right on top of the action here they feel part of the game the bleacher x can almost reach over and touch the outfielders and the folks along the box seats are right off the on deck circle you're a real part of the game here two balls are no strength to kessinger who bounced the 30s first time there's a line drive hit in the center coming in the scores and after two out nobody on the cubs have had four hits in a row they tied the game at two to two there goes almost got him going again on the left field bleachers [Applause] college can hire during the football season he's as good as cheerleaders last name lynn becker bounced to the pitchers first time runners on first and second two down [Applause] right [Applause] jenkins at second guessing you're at first two away one ball one strike to becker i guess one of the requirements of the team to be a pen and contender all year long is their ability to bounce back and this club's doing it right now they've done it all year long they've come from behind in ball games the tigers did this all last year to win a pen in the american league flips over to cookie rojas for the force on kessinger and the cubs are out but he tied it up they had two runs four hits there were no errors and two left at the end of two it's the phillies two in the cubs two atlanta's leading the dodgers by a half game the giants by two and a reds by two and a half and houston's only seven and a half out they have a five team race in the western division of the national league foul back nothing in one to cookie rojas who hit him into a double play as he leads off for the phillies in the third ferguson jenkins spends the fastball ends in the air in a shallow ride and it is cut by billy williams coming on becker going back lost that ball in his son it would have been a very difficult play for him anyway that's a tough play for an infielder kurt you're going full speed you can't run quite as fast if you keep looking over your shoulder so you put your head down and try and locate the spot where the ball is going to come down in the meantime you've got to listen for that outfielder listen to his signal telling you whether he can reach it a lot of collisions a lot of players have been injured in just at the situation larry heisel hitting the number three spot single his first time up goes after about fix the track run in the american league yesterday kansas city beat the cub the white sox 8-5 the yankee shaded washington 4-3 the red sox took a doubleheader from baltimore strength in the outside corner 7-4 and 12-3 cleveland over the tigers 8-1 minnesota nine seattle three and oakland three the angels nothing one ball two strikes i showed you how hot it is in that dugout that was mike ryan they were applying the towel to two and two to larry heisel one out nobody on the philly's batting in the top of the third this game is tied two to two if you just joined us jenkins is a canadian khan's still two and two born and still is in chatham ontario canada he went to a hockey game become a very popular athletic figure in canada which is a hockey country but he went to a hockey game in montreal last winter tony and when they walked in announced it was there they gave him a 10 minute standing ovation ball free strike two challenge about 50 miles from detroit north east our canadian detroit expert jim obama said it's east all four high sales on oh i gotta explain that one fish for breakfast kurt last week we mentioned the baseball fans all over the country you're going to fist the little laramie river in wyoming this morning a call at 7 30. come down i got something to show you and what do we have fresh trout for breakfast i had about four of those things i guess delicious how'd you like them oh i paid tribute to that chef over at the hotel he did a good job how about the fisherman yeah well i'm not worried about that that's a common everyday thing to you you know you go out there and catch these big lunkers all over the country oh boy those are out of coal clear crystal waters there in wyoming oh back weren't they firm and sweet oh that was good fried and butter and lemon on them we had some bacon and ash browns with them great thank you i'm just thinking first time i've ever seen it done harry koyler director ordered bagels and cream cheese was proud have you ever heard of anything like that no bagels is proud i never had dropped dead on a while they were gonna hear about that it was good he tried his daughters but he couldn't ruin those trout no matter what he ate along with us two down isil on first johnny briggs up ball one two or nothing see that follow through there curtis hell that pose for a while leo was telling me about that he said he's the first pitcher he's ever seen that when he throws his change up his straight change off the fastball his right foot will never leave the rubber very deceptive pitch he has good motion with it on the move his isil is top down to the first baseman banks makes the tag breaks it out silver phillies in the top of the third no runs no hits no errors one left at the end of two and a half innings we're in a tie game to pillies two in the cups too billy williams as we said earlier the fourth longest consecutive game playing streak in the history of the major leagues 909 straight games today hasn't missed the game there's a long drive to deep left center that one is going going and it is off the top of the wall just missed the home run williams is rounding second coming for three he hits it he's in there with a triple [Applause] kurt i think that wind blowing from left to right field was a factor in keeping that ball at the ballpark let's watch williams again get the pitch a little bit and head down on the ball at good quick level hand action his eye never left that ball and of course i think the wind held it would have been a home run for williams but he's got a triple billy williams now has tied bobby coleman to the reds for the lead and triples in the national league to each have eight infield halfway in and a pitch is a ball to ron santa who lined to the fisheries first time thano batting 295 runner on third nobody out comes up last of the third tie game 2-2 good pitch for stan only just got a piece of it right in here to him a fastball one-on-one ron's up there looking for that pitch high in the strike zone if he can get it up till two strikes he'll try and get that kind of pitch one he can loft the ball of the outfield score that runner with a sacrifice fly passes at the third it's a fair ball a long throw by taylor why and he's safe at first holding his third as william billy williams stayed at third [Applause] and there's the cheerleader salma getting the bleacher fans going as kirk mentioned that empty was playing about halfway when the high opera came down to third base it was a tough play from having to retreat in that way and stop himself write himself get us down some time make that long throw they have given a hit to ronsano that ball in back of the bag absurd ernie banks rounded out his first time banks hitting 263. [Applause] all one tony uh a couple of the chicago riders were telling me they thought that banks looked like you'd been tired the last week or two he wasn't snapping the bat around as he was earlier in the year we'll watch him here [Applause] all one to him right 101. kurt this is the stage of the season and of course there's been a lot of hot weather throughout the country sounds like st louis and you get out even new york was hot when they were there and played some day games and even a fella with the traveling conditions who's young will tire at this stage is looking forward to that three days all-star break ernie banks is 38 years old 1-1 pitch a little bit high phillies are warming up a fisher right-hander al raffel r-a-f-f-o raffle two balls in the strike the ernie banks [Applause] fouls [Applause] is playing very shallow at second base he's playing less than halfway he falls it directly at him he may try and keep billy williams down at third base be tough to get a double play in any ball hit to him because his shortstop is playing way in that hole playing banks as a full hitter good to pitch ground ball recruited everybody's safe and a run scores billy williams is in and the cubs lead three to two i wonder if he took his eye off the ball just a second to look up at home plate knowing he had plenty of time to get over there and either flip or step on second and go to first curry either did that or he was looking to see how close ron santa was bearing down in second base and whether or not he could take that play by himself just step on second base if he was that close and really the throw or whether he would have to shuffle it off to rojas who would make the pivot so he had a couple of things on his mind and i just said he probably took his eye off the ball because the ball wasn't hit hard banks gets an rbi is 71st three to two cubs now they have runners on first and second nobody out willie smith struck out his first time [Applause] all into smith foul away one-on-one [Applause] there's a long belt by smith [Music] [Applause] [Music] congratulate willie smith as his eighth homer and 20 and 21. [Applause] still nobody out and the cubs leading now six to two top no [Applause] plays the tigers are having a field day over in tiger stadium they got six runs in the first and five in the second they're leading cleveland now 11 to nothing new york and washington tied one to one at the end of five and a half minnesota and seattle tied one to one at the end of two and a half pitcher on your left for the village is rafael the right was johnson two right-handers ball one to randy hundley who's single his first time kansas city leading the white sox two-nothing into three california also has a starter and boston plays at baltimore tonight doing one to randy hundley the cardinals two to pirates nothing end of an inning and a half montreal at new york postponed reigns tonight cincinnati at houston san francisco and los angeles atlanta at san diego and to foul the cast two and two nobody on nobody out only the batter with jimmy falls on deck jimmy falls be up next pounding ball of shortstop one away in the last of the third and here's qualls coming up he punched the swing of the lefty first time cub six phillies two [Applause] kurt you come you think come the middle of this week when the mets get the towel there's gonna be a little excitement around here there's enough today but when you figure that tenant contenders coming in they play here monday tuesday and wednesday afternoon mets in the cubs on the corner for a strike grounded to the right side rojas handles it and they're two down and ferguson jenkins will be the next batter the cup pitcher [Applause] [Applause] he's single to right field in the second inning you're not gonna run straight away point right one all kinds of banners here today one ball one strike two down nobody on last ball for a strike one and two rick wise struck him out the cubs are retired in the third but they had four runs three hits one error by the fill and nobody left so at the end of three it's the cubs six and the phillies two managers spilt and changes will pick the pitchers and the rest of the squad strike one the money these players voted must start and play at least three innings nothing in two to don money who grounded out his first time kurt the thing that's impressive especially about the american leg team this year is the extreme power they have they figure a guy like yastromsky kind of like a leva alkaline didn't make the team with the kind of years they're having they'll have a jackson with 34 homers and however 32 homers in the outfield frank robinson quite a hitting outfield national league's been supreme though in recent years they've won six in a row struck him out one out nobody on ron stone the right feeler of the phillies up he struck out his first time the last two all-star games is proven again no matter how many great hitters you have great pitching can stop good hitting could i be surprised though if they overpowered them this year like they have in the past few years wow back you know the trend so far in the season just about halfway over has been more toward hitting this year in baseball we've shown figures from week to week home run production is up run production is up base hit production is up the good pitchers are still getting their shutout but these home run hitters are hitting the ball out of the park that's right one ball one strike to ron stone cubs six phillies two in the top of the four ferguson jenkins shooting for victory number 12 today there's a ball hit sharply by beckart in the right field up for the ball as a centerfielder jimmy paul they sit for stone and the catcher mike ryan will be moving in the big winners among the pitchers this year the national league siever of the metro 114 neutral of the brazen 114 marichal clay carroll and bill singer at least won 12. in the american league mclean and startlemeyer won 13 mcnally blue moon odom and ray culp have won 12. the seaver and necro the leading winners among the pitchers in the major leagues the fourth team fly ball to left willy smith gathers it in there's two down stone stays at first and harmon is going to hit for wise we'll have a new philly pitcher in the last of the four jerry harmon terry harmon carmen batting 225 now back al raffel is going to come on the pitch for the fills in the last of the fourth you see that vacant area out there they purposely do not allow fans to sit there now paul and they've covered it with a green screen that used to be a murderous background for a batter on days like this with a white shirt sleeve crowd the white ball coming out of the white shirts and tough for the hitter dangerous too line drive in the left center a pinch hit for harmon fills out runners on first and second two down top of the order now tony taylor who's had a bun single and lying to the pitcher hurt that type of background you're talking about that white shirt background most of the times you can see the ball pretty well enough to hit it but the when a pitcher gets out there that can change speeds it's difficult you don't you have no depth per second you can't tell the change of speeds on the pitch cubs leading six to two the philly's vatican iv has two down runners on first and second high flying a shallow ride billy williams camped under puts it away and that's it no runs too hip there were no errors two left the end of three and a half it's the cub six and the phillies two there's the young fellows learning to keep scoring a ball game and i think it always makes it more enjoyable if you another one with the knot studying the situation when you go to a game if you can keep your own score i think you'll find a lot of enjoyment or when you watch it on tv or listen on the radio al raffel a big boy 6'5 weighs 2 10. 27 years old he's won one and lost two this is his 23rd appearance of the year and it's outside to kessinger for a ball kessinger is grounded to third and single the center one on one this is the top of the cub order kessinger becker and william a strike at the knees glenn becker will be up next on that inside corner to him good two and two balma doing to the kessinger nobody on nobody out another foul two through the count kurt gowdy and tony kubick and we hope you're enjoying today's game of the week we'll be in san francisco next saturday for the dodgers and the giants and he's not looking one out rick wise pitched three innings gave up eight hits six runs no walks to strikeouts beckert has bounced to the infield and wrapped into a fourth play richard's a tough boy to fan he's been the toughest a fan in the national league in each of the last three seasons he fans on an average of once every 34 times a battle car just strikeout gets a piece of that ball struck out seven times so far this year [Applause] he's the fellow that leo deroser considers the backbone of this cubs team never wants to get out of the lineup he does nothing exceptionally well but he makes a double play more than adequately doing one count to him seems to be in the right spot he comes up with a big play we were talking to leo before the ball game kurt in his office and he was telling you about eddie stanky being that type of player always was right there when the ball was hit bringing one to him he won a gold glove for his fielding prowess last year third base coach rube walker sending a sign up is it hit or take on three and one one out nobody on passes it pitcher raffle makes the play unassisted at first place in their two down he moves for a big man that raffle really got off that mound here's billy williams we're talking about his streak the longest of course in major league history and if you think williams has done a job playing in 909 consecutive games lou gehrig two thousand a hundred and thirty consecutive games ever scott played one thousand three hundred seven and joel sewell played at one thousand a hundred and three williams record is remarkable consider the traveling nowadays the finite gains night games in the day games doing nothing campfire was hit by that one that's all first i wonder where's in 20 30 40 years ago traveled by train now it's by jet would you say you get more arrests uh the jet getting into town uh quickly or relaxing on that train for overnight john how how did the affect you tony kurt i think uh this time changes and the different times that you eat your meals is the biggest single factor the two uh worst factors in traveling you start a game out in the east coast in new york and i can recall the first year we went out to play the angels and we'd get out there and play a night game and you get into about that eighth inning of the ball game and body time it's actually about one or two o'clock in the morning you wonder why you were a little bit tired that's a fair ball as booted by the first baseman rick joseph went over the bag fair you saw him feel in foul territory but it was fair went across the bag billy williams is on with two downs an error has been charged on rick joseph and here's ron steinel coming up he's lying to the pitcher and he's having an infield here panel batting 297 the cubs are leading 6-2 in the last of the four nbc's game of the week overhand curveballs ball one ron sano from al raffel two down williams at first william's back hey buddy [Applause] the strike one and one sandow has an exceptional eye at the plate he's annually among the leaders in the national league as far as bases on balls to be that kind of hitter kurt you saw ted williams he liked hit with two strikes on him a lot he made that pitcher work on him nibble on the corners wait until he got his pit santos this way he had a rip at that one one ball two strikes lasano williams at first two away there's some hitters kurt that even in the big leagues that fear getting two strikes and they think once two strikes are on you i'm dead reach for the outside breaking pitch money nearly fumbled that ball up into his chest but recovered in time for the force on williams ii and it's no runs for the cubs no hits there with one error one left at the end of four the cubs six to the phillies two in the fifth inning ferguson jenkins faces cookie rojas larry heisel and rick joseph franklin and the fans vote of the all-time philly team recently they selected rojas as a second baseman the strike eddie waitress at first granny hammond with a shortstop willie jones at third dowliness richie ashburn and chuck klein in the outfield andy simonic the catcher robin roberts the right hannah pitcher and chris short the left-hander and robin roberts was selected as the greatest philly of them all one balls his strikes to cookie rojas was hit into a double play and slide to right quick four strikeouts for ferguson jenkins clary heisel has singled and walked got their two runs they were unearned in the first inning they had three hits that inning and since then jenkins has been tough paul won the high school one away nobody on jenkins has pitched 14 complete games and 22 starts this year one on one bob gibson of the cardinals and phil necro of the braves are tied for the national igly they've each pitched 15 complete games in 18 starts fly ball right field billy williams going back and takes it you say he played that ball very protruding [Applause] [Music] courtney looked like he may have had a little difficulty with his son that's settling back over the stanza down the third baseline in wrigley field and shaded his eyes a little bit but if even if you put those sunglasses down if the ball is directly in the center of the sun they are of no help you just gotta battle it try and wait until it comes out and you get a glimpse of him snatch at it two down nobody on rick joseph is single and struck out there's a long drive a deep left that one is a home run for rick joseph that's his third homer and his 26th run batted in and that makes it now the cub sticks into philly three johnny briggs has reached an air and grounded out strike hi hard one doing jenkins doesn't waste much time he gets the ball back and he wants that signal he wants to pitch fast [Applause] well he has three and nothing in the scoreboard i thought that first pitch was a strike let's see looks like he gave it that signal sometimes you'd notice that sudah with the arm will that's ball three three and one now on the corner for three and two [Applause] dugout it's there i'll show you what command jenkins has over his breaking pitches with a three and two count he came in with a changeup curve ball threw it for strike [Applause] [Music] [Applause] nobody left at the end of four and a half it's the cubs six in the phillies three only four players in national league history have more rbis than ernie banks fouls are back there stan usual mel a lot willie mays and hank aaron thanks past rogers hornsby in the third inning of this game with that rbi he came up with all one pretty fair right-handed hitter rogers [Music] i guess he stood way away from the plate in the corner of that batter's box and really took his stride into the pit in the home plate yeah you should hear the old-timers talk about him and how he get hit there's a pop-up third baseman tony taylor waiting for it [Applause] foul ball and banks it out one down willie smith was struck out and crashed the three-run homer in the third willie banning 306. [Applause] tomorrow cubs are leading six to three they're batting here in the last of the fifth two or nothing al rafal has relieved rick wise for the bills three another now back three and one one out nobody on willie smith draws a walk that puts him on there's one away here comes randy hunley who's singled and grounded out loudly batting 288. i heard i was thinking about our discussion in the rochester's office this morning and of course the team that's really challenging the cubs right now is the mets of course but they've still got the cardinals on their mind a little bit too they still think they're going to snap out of it go on an extended winning streak and still get in this pendant race still a good solid ball club 6-3 cubs last to the fifth the ball manny hundley was second to johnny bench in the voting for the catcher for starting catcher the national league [Applause] flash of the foul under the seats one ball one strike do you think randy's up there looking for anything else but a fastball he loves that high fastball lenny difficult to throw the ball by him upstairs especially he's learned in the last couple of years kurt that he doesn't have to swing at that breaking pitch until two strikes he waits for that fastball figures two strikes on me then i'll hit your pitch [Applause] right in there to him one ball two strikes to hundley willie smith at first one down six to three cubs last to the fifth ground ball to taylor at third he's got one another first for the double play around the horn taylor to rojas to jojo that's all for the cubs and if you don't think it isn't hot out there those umpires and you can see the protective gear they wear he's down to his t-shirt national league umpires of course wear this type of protector curtain the american league they use that balloon type the one that blows up and they wear on the outside kind of shaped and they on fire a little bit differently in their angle behind the plate you'll watch him now that's ed sudall he takes his position he'll be on the inside corner of the plates of these hitters the right hand here you can see he'll be over the left shoulder of that catcher left hand it'll be over the right shoulder strike nothing at one john money grounded out struck out adding 245 one and one johnson or right hand are warming up again for the fill they may pinch it if they get to the bottom of the order two and one jenkins is only 25 there's johnson he's a real workhorse he leads the nasty league in innings pitch now last year he was second in innings pitch rounded out the shortstop kessinger gobbles it up and throws him out there's one away [Applause] our quiz is coming up this inning i think roth wants you to quiz me today we're turning the tables on you today you turn the tables on me uh let's ask the fans we said last year that jenkins finished second for the most innings pitch to the national league who do you think fans think led the national league in innings pitch you fans think that one over right i'll give you a hint with the san francisco giants can i take a guess right is it other than juan miracle gaylord named it no it is one show on maricel led the national league in the most ending fish strike two well the record of his that he's injured he's had injury now you wouldn't maybe think that because he's always had a nagging injury or something happened to him so the hard luck fella had me percentage of games he completes is what always amazes me right to the box a comebacker and over the first with it doane is out two down [Applause] mike ryan the phillies catchers up to ground it out and fly down see if i have time to slip this quiz in here between pitches it's just the cloudy crystal balls where are they that's right ball one fire away when you're ready barry is coming out to bat for the pitcher raffle if he gets a chance richard berry a strike two and one to mike ryan there he is six to three cups of philly's batting in the top of the six a grounder to kessinger again and the buildings are down one two three in the top of the sixth second at the end of five and a half to score chicago sixth and philadelphia three in the last of the sixth inning the cubs end up jimmy paul ferguson jenkins and don kessinger all right what's the baseball quiz today all right here we go only two players in major league history this is since 1900 have ever made five extra base hits in a game this is regardless of the length of the game it could be extra innings this feat was performed once in the national league and once in the american and the national league it was done by joe adcock of the milwaukee braves with four home runs to double in the game at brooklyn on july 31st 1954 that was joe adcock in the national league who was the only american league player ever to make five extra base hits in a game he's at wrigley field today he's at wrigley's field today at wrigley field today all right you know him personally now give it some thought all right walls lines it out to right and it's trapped out there off the curve here comes paul for second they've got the ball waiting for him he's out the shortstop john money took the throw from the right fielder ron stone a single for qualls and he's out at second base there's a second chance quality has had a shoe stringer he's just missed both of them but you'll see how quickly he recovers and quals was going full speed all the way stone's gonna have to pick him off south off the ground very quickly makes a very accurate throw from almost his knees watch this hard slide by calls coming and you think the cubs don't see a little bit of that money curl look at the way they're playing they're running those base pass taking those chances one out nobody on and ferguson jenkins up all right you asked me our weekly quiz the only american league player to get five extra base hits in a game and he's here today correctly feel i looked over my scorecard i don't see anybody on the field or on the roster that would qualify and i looked at the coaches but i just happen to remember i saw him before the game on the field foul back lou boudreau he's about the only ex-american leaguer here today lou boudreau who played with the indians and the red sox is that right or not right sharker 23 years ago on july 14th 1946 in the first game of a doubleheader at boston lou boudreau then playing manager of the cleveland indians and now a chicago cubs radio and broadcaster as you said hit four doubles in a home run the first player in modern major league history to have five extra bass hits in the game listen to this this will interest you too despite this record performance the indians lost the game 11-9 as your old buddy ted williams hit three home runs including the game winner in the ninth in the second game of that double header boudreaux came up with the now famous boudreau or ted williams ship placing all his infielders on the right side and moving that outfield extremely to the right field side that was a much discussed bit of strategy boudreaux came up with that shift and swung the outfield around to the right put three infielders in the right side williams was a dead right field hitter a left-handed bull hitter and they used to argue in boston that he should go to the opposite field and he used to say no he would ruin his swing by doing it strike three jenkins was out two down and he thought that was his natural way to hit if he changed up jenkins didn't like the call if he changed up he would ruin his swing and he just defied him and he kept trying to hit that way now tony later on in his career as he got older now and then he'd even dump a bunt down or try and chop a ball to the left side of the infield or he sliced the left field and he came up with quite a few hits that way later on as he got older could i recall my first in the american league in 1957 we had a pitcher called johnny cox who was a good pitcher for a couple of years and a good sinker ball it was difficult to pull him well we had the shoe casey had me playing on the first base side of second base and he had three balls through the vacated shortstop but walked up on the pitch and three ground balls right through there ball one wendy's was such a good hitter john he could hit the ball i think he'd almost spot it out there any place he wanted it he has that kind of control two down nobody on the cubs leading here six for three a spider record five extra base hits in one game there's a looper in the left that's going to drop in for a base set briggs is chasing it he can't come up with it and kessinger's in the second with a double ten hips for the cup seven for the philly cubs ahead six for three and with two down keplinger on second here in the last of the sixth inning glenn becker's up three times he's grounded the ball with the m2 becker batting 301 straight away for him [Music] throw to third [Music] that was a funny play two down and he threw the third face two down and he went to third at the gamble play anytime kurt ivance becker did not hit the ball well he broke the bat on the play the only thing that could have happened is that the shortstop don money forgot that there were two outs otherwise he's got the easy play at first base there was a mental lapse on money's part once again with billy williams up the cubs got some going dealer's choice rebecca runners on first and third two down here's billy williams and he hits a high foul that is going to just get in the box beats out of play williams has single triple and reached an error today and billy's batting 299. we've had a lot of first pitch hitting in this game cubs 6-3 threatening again runners of first and third two away [Applause] el rappel curves him and he misses with it just inside a ball one and one over third with kessinger at first base is becker [Music] [Applause] [Music] and once again a silly mistake has opened the gates for the cubs and they lead now 7-3 [Applause] williams grabbing in his 50th run and kurt the cubs don't look like they're collapsing to me they're looking like they're priming himself for those mets when they get here this beginning of the next week because they've taken advantage of every situation so far today they made a mistake early in the ballgame on the air and the outfit should have been the third out but they bounced back ron sano lined to the pitcher had an infield hit and grounded into a fourth play two down runners on first and second all one ernie banks on deck [Applause] outside to another phillies are warming up johnson again [Applause] the third will be a tough play taylor comes up with a beautifully and frozen out to retire the side one run three hits no error two left and we've gone now six innings with the score the cup seven on the phillies three rich ferry is pinch hitting for al rafal and it's a strike to him barry's been up only eight times this year where the phil's had one hit came up in the yankee chain originally the uh tigers lead the indians twelve nothing into five it's like two diodes started for the indians crawl in a second lolitch going for number 13. for number 12 he's won 11 and lost two jackie price john don works at two homers in that game eight to one minnesota over seattle at the end of five jim perry for the twins there's a line shot to left and it's going to be a base hit in front of willie smith so the phillies have sent up two pin today and both have come through now we're at the top of the philly order and tony taylor who is single grounded out or lined out and fly down kansas city sixth the white sox nothing into five and a half horlin against rooker kirkpatrick homer kansas city california oakland has not started in a night game the red sox play the orioles at baltimore philly's now had eight hits good save by randy hundley ball one to taylor eleven hits for the cubs eight hits for the film seven to three chicago and his half of the seventh just outside two nothing for late tuners and it's a very hot humid day here in chicago and you always wonder about that starting pitcher long about this time with a hot day a strike two and one jenkins is still firing the ball though you can see by his complete game record kurt that he has an awful lot of stamina as we mentioned the cubs have been hitting hot weather as most folks have all over the country this year three-in-one the tony taylor the phillies have been a better team on the road than they have at home tony told you earlier they've won 10 road games in a row now that's quite a regular especially when their best pitcher short is out they've lost their best hitter richie allen had all kinds of troubles and injuries and yet they they have really been playing winning baseball in the last couple of weeks like three and two you have to get them real credit now johnny callison's out he's he'll be on a month uh when he finally gets off of the stabilis dislocated shoulder darren johnson was missing for three weeks a good power hitter with a full hamstring fly ball to billy williams backs up and he lets it get over his head he lost the ball in the sun he was trying to get those sunglasses down very goes to third into second base was taylor he was fighting to get his sunglasses down on the way out the ball was hit very hard kurt as you could see and that's a type of ball that's hit on the line like that for a power hitter that will curve away from you it'll curve down toward that right field corner and he turned to his right lost the baldness and couldn't recover because the ball got over his head so quickly now the fills have runners on second and third nobody out and the batter is cookie rojas who's hit into a double play flied out and struck out bob skinner you've mentioned a moment ago here he is right here and odd ferocious excuse me but skinner has maneuvered his players he's had catchers playing third base the outfield he's had players shifted all over the place out of position but they've been doing a job for winning some ball games bowball rojas hitting 243. 7-3 tub in the seventh there's bob skinner all kinds of problems this year but he has a justice he's done himself quite a job one and one foul away one ball tonight rich ferries at third tony taylor's at second nobody out another foul count there's one ball two strikes to rojas trying to get that outside fit and after he's fouled the last two off billy williams now has moved a couple of steps toward the right field line out right field fly a ball down the left field line willie smith over there tagging at third as barry the throws coming in the third base barry scores at seven to four chicago sacrifice fly for cookie rojas and a run battered in that second base is taylor with one out and larry heisel coming up as single watch and fly to right nothing i won the high school isil attended ohio state university for a year he now attends ohio university branch of portsmouth during the offseason and he coaches the freshman basketball team nothing and two he's been going for jenkins thinker jenkins gets some of these right-handers and he starts coming from the side a little bit and they give just the shade at the plate and he tries to keep that thinker away from them it's a tough pitch to hit if you do you usually hit that easy ground ball to the shortstop one and two to larry heisel one out tony taylor at second 7-4 the cubs [Music] oh that one just missed two and two you can see the famed ivy in the background there along the outside wall there's been some peculiar things happening with that ivy too fly balls have been stuck in it all three three and two leo derosa a man his age he's in remarkable shape last ball pumped in by ferguson jenkins he just rear back let that one go struck out five blackout leader of the national league and the major league rick joseph single struck out and hit a home run two out of three two down tony taylor's second a ball jenkins knows how to set up these hitters you just watch them work they come from the side a nibble on the outside corner you get the hitter leaning over the plate and you'll try and bust them on the fist get them backing oil throw it on the outside corner got the inside corner with that one one and one one ball just strikes and for the first time today we're going to have some action now in the cup hole pen phil regan the right-hander right left-hander that rich nye looks like him right three and gopro as jack and struck on highschool and joseph in the seventh one run one hit for the philly there were no errors one run two hits there were no errors and one man left at the end of six and a half it's the cubs seven and the phillies four darren johnson has gone to first base and he'll be batting ninth johnson will be batting fourth rick joseph have left the game ernie banks strike one and one to bank hitting 261 pitches ball two two and one and if you're wondering why manager bob skinner put the pitcher in the number four spots it'll save him a pinch pitch hitter and an extra pitcher three-in-one ground ball great stop by taylor alone throw and it's there in time that's the play of the ball game so far by tony taylor the third baseman of the philly willie smith has struck out hit a three-run homer in the third and walked cubs seven the phillies four were in the last of the seventh inning the ball you know this cubs bench has helped them a lot this year here's a fella wasn't expected to play this season except in pinch hitting al spangler had a good start for them played the outfielder was real hot at the beginning of the season one-on-one to willie smith johnson has been used mostly as a starter this year he's had 14 starts big hopper out the second baseman's rojas easy play for him in her two down and randy hundley is up he's single grounded out and hit into a double play the cardinals came up with three runs in their sixth to take a six to one lead over the pirates and the pirates came back with two and a seven so it's now cardinal seven the cardinal sixth and the fire three the cardinals have won nine of their last ten their best streak of the season cubs are warming up in their bullpen not a pitcher but jim hickman will probably go in there defensively for them in the outfield a ball to hundley all to two and all strike two and one going for that inside fish two and two to hundley on deck is jimmy calls crack came out and the cubs are out one two three and a seven at the end of seven it's the cubs seven and the phillies four [Applause] the eighth inning johnny briggs has reached an air and grounded on lined out jenkins been in her all the way for the cubs and switches outside jenkins has given up eight hits ball two he hasn't walked a man there's a strike he struck out six turn apparently ferguson jenkins has passed away along the manager leo derosary may be losing just a little bit because he's got two pitchers warming up down there a 2-1 pitch joint through everybody three and one regan the right-hander rich nye the left-hander john money will be on deck i'm in stone and that's the first man that jenkins has walked the second one let's check that walk too john money is grounded out struck out and grounded out if hot here the teachers start taking a stall even though jenkins is usually a game finisher don money batting 244 pops it off the panhandle back out of play no balls one strike in there respect to the money phillies are now warming up grant jackson a left-hander throw to first back as bricks this boy at the bat don money was required from the pirates with pitchers woody fryman bill action and held slam in a crate of jim bunning after the 67 season brad jackson warming up one and two to don money al again jenkins looks like he's a little bit higher than sinning kurt than he was in earlier in the ball game even with that slider that curveball of as he's coming inside once in a while it's a sign that maybe he's tiring and his legs are a little weak well again by money not quite bending over enough getting down and getting that good push off that right foot off that rubber there's a pop foul hundley waiting for it [Music] [Applause] that brings up ron stone with struck out single and bounce to the pitcher jenkins is rough in this ballpark he has led the national league pitchers in victories at home the last two years he won 15 and lost five here in 67 at wrigley field last year he won 13 and lost seven this year he's won five and lost four at home and he's won six and lost two in a row so he's been better in a row than home this year he won 20 last year in last 15 and five of those losses were by one to nothing scores a 1-0 pitch ball 2 2-0 we have our first final score and the yankees beat washington 3-1 burbach the winner and bosman the loser two and one around stone the cubs are leading the philly 7-4 in the eighth inning three-in-one in the late innings the pitcher starts getting behind and when he starts walking that's usually a tip-off to a manager that he's starting to lose it now ron sano wants to talk to him and so does randy hundley need rosher signaling his infielders to get out to the mound to give ferguson jenkins a little bit of a break give him a little bit of a rest here tell him to get on top of those pitches bend those legs in that back get the ball down low on the strike zone this is the type of part kurt with the short dimensions all over that you want to be especially sure certain that you keep the ball down low always got the chance for the double play you get the ball in the area with a wind usually blowing out the balls jump out of this park fires the fastball through three and two to round stone one out johnny briggs at first there's a base hit to right hickman's gun in the game in right field comes up with it fires the second the phillies have runners on first and second one away and deroser is coming out now to talk to jenkins jenkins the type of pitcher we talked to leo before the ball game about him he's the stopper on this staff and you go along a little bit farther with a picture of jenkins caliber than you would with most especially when just the day before your bullpen collapsed on you kurt yesterday at geary and as we mentioned then of course regan they couldn't get anybody out abernathy had some difficulties too so he'd like to go with jenkins if jenkins says i can still throw the ball and he's going to switch he's asking for regan russia's decided on his hot day jenkins is tired and he's going to remove him so there's a break in the action here at wrigley field chicago the score the chicago cubs seven and the philadelphia police four [Applause] strike to mike ryan it out fly down and ground it out seven to nothing kansas city over chicago at the end of seven california oakland hasn't started yet boston at baltimore tonight i think i missed the seattle minnesota game there's a foul ball minnesota 10 seattle one at the end of seven twins have been playing steady baseball the last couple of weeks widen the gap to three and a half games now in the western division of the american league brian batting 213 look at him up in that bat handle runners on first and second one away [Applause] ryan started after it held up now deroser is arguing that was a swing [Applause] i just want to ask something and quickly goes back leo knows we're on national tv today doesn't he he's quite a showman might have something to do he's done a heck of a job with his cubs team though the players love him you know that well he this is we said a couple of weeks ago this is where he belongs in the dugout not executive somewhere he's a very outstanding baseball man and showman whether you like him or not he still has a lot of color and controversy and pepper separate of the game the player and manager always live he's been that way he's sharp there's a ground ball in a second becker the kessinger for one over to first fellow player and reagan comes in and bails him out in the top of the eighth no run one hit there were no iron and one left at the end of seven and a half at the cubs seven of the phillies four right it's the last of the eighth innings philly pitcher johnson will face paul regan and kessinger balls are single granite and single john money making the play bill reagan do up the cub started something new here that is for chicago they've opened a special autograph who's under the stands behind the cub dugout and every day three different cubs will autograph for the fans are taking turns today it was randy hundley don kensington glenn becker to get the autographing tomorrow will be three more shots and that's to accommodate the fans they all can't do it at once but they pick out three each day to do it here in their own ballpark bill regan up for his first time with philly's last chance in their ninth [Applause] inning we'll have darren johnson tony taylor and griffin rojas up pounding ball at tony taylor at third there are two downs john kessinger has rounded out singles struck out and doubled the cubs have a 500 or better record against every team this year against the phillies they won five out of seven [Applause] gessenger 296 average [Applause] inside for a ball say listen next week in san francisco and i see you you can have some of those trout pressure drive to bring some polish kabasa and cook that up for us what i have to do oh well here's the one open sorry we'll have to be without the trout for a while now the last get a chance to go fishing again beckert on deck two and one i'll have to get you some of those good skatepad stripe bass for bluefish doing two two down nobody on 704 chicago foul away tony's starting on down and depending on the time element he usually has the star of the game on after the game of the week he might be interested in learning two and two count two down nobody on [Applause] line drive to left third hit for kessinger [Applause] and glenn beckert coming up he's john hitles he hasn't had the ball out of the infield four times getting overcast in chicago threat of rain chicago seven phillies four the cubs had two in the second four in the third and one in the six [Applause] right batting an even 300. kessinger will be right up around 300 so those two top men in the cup batting order our table setters are on base a lot [Applause] nothing in two to glenn beckham w williams hitting third is hitting 301. monsanto is hitting 295 hot day by santo and they could have the top four in the 300 mark in the batting order one boss just strikes quebecker two down kept endure first [Applause] outside for ball two two and two to better [Applause] however [Applause] two and two [Applause] all again and kessinger on the move [Applause] he pops it up going out as rojas he was calling for it all away and the cubs were out of the last of the eighth inning no runs one hit there were no errors one left at the end of eight the score is a cubs seven in the phillies four darren johnson who came in as a first baseman will be up for his first time in the game he's heading into pitcher spot for the phillies number nine adding 245 it'll be johnson then the top of the order taylor and rojas against phil regan who came in to relieve jenkins in the eighth reagan now trying to protect this three-run lead for the cubs the cardinals are winning they met their idol today they were rained out in fact the cardinals are just one they beat the fire six to three a pop-up by darren johnson kessinger under it one out those cardinals they uh [Applause] never gelled this year they just couldn't get a good streak going they've got one going now they have now won 10 of their last 11. and they could be real rough the last half a year alan ross our statistician on nbc's game of the week and jim will gorman's our estate manager taylor a single and a double in four times one out of the on seven to four the cup strikes friggins got that herky jerky delivery the tigers went with the dodgers did a great job they let him go he's come here to the cubs and then quite a job falls fair down the first baseline jim hickman playing it off the wall taylor's in the second base with a double his third hit of the game and there's a smell of rain in here suddenly here you can feel it coming big black cloud now moving overhead and you can sniff it cookie rojak hitless in four times one out taylor at second ninth inning seven to four the cups baldwin and it's getting windy the wind has shifted now there's a cloud at just the edge of it though coming overhead the wind has shifted down is blowing in from center field toward home plate against the hitters foul ball ernie that that wind is carrying it into about the third row two or three innings ago banks could have had a shot at that to win the switch one ball one strike to cookie rojas at second base is tony taylor one away ball two two and one three in one now and the tying run will now come to the plate for the phillies larry heisel will follow rojas rojas has walked he's on first taylor's on second heisel has had one hit and three times rich nye a left-hander starting to warm up for the cubs runners on first and second one out outside a ball dave's watching come out on deck to pitcher is due up next for the phillies in the number four spot dave watson a strike at the knee one on one all two two and one basketball behind two and two tony taylor's at second cookie rojas at first one out ground ball they've got one that's all kessinger with a good range that time keeping that ball from going up the middle fourth play on rojas kessinger to becker two downs taylor's on third is on first and dave watkins will bat for the pitcher johnson in the number four spot watson batting 200. seven to four cubs two away now for the phillies of the ninth they're down to their last out [Applause] right all one and one dave watkins runners on first and third two down on the corner spectrum runners on first and third two away fly ball to right jim hickman waiting and the game is over chicago as the fate of the police in the ninth [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right now let's get down to the field to tony kubak thank you kurt our guest today is phil regan and phil seems never to be a dull moment here at wrigley field these days well i think that's right tony you know it's a lot different than when i was with the dodgers and playing in a big stadium uh you get two or three runs ahead there and you seem like you got the ball game but here it's such a short post of the fence that two or three runs isn't safe and uh as a result i think probably our relief pitcher really gets more work here than maybe in dodger stadium phil fergie jenkins had a couple of tough breaks the ball out in left field where the two outfielders collided and so forth he fits a good volume was it just a matter that he got tired and ladies because of the heat well i think it's true tony because he called down at the end of the seventh inning and said well we think he possibly can go one more inning so go along with him and then maybe we'll bring you in in the ninth but then he got in a little bit of trouble and i think he just wanted to bring him out and bring in a fresh pitcher uh the way we've been pitching lately uh i think it was a real uh bold move on leo's part maybe because the bullpen has been really sharp lately so he showed a lot of confidence in it as a reason for the bullpen not being sharp and i know you're probably referring mainly to yesterday's ballgame where the phillies came back in the late innings and you couldn't do anything right is it because you're tired you're over pitching you just haven't had enough work i i think it may be uh uh you know starting off the year we were pitching quite regularly then we had a stretch there for about two weeks where i think i pitched an inning in two-thirds and and we seem to lose everyone down there seem to lose their rhythm a little bit and we just really haven't regained our stride but uh as for overwork i don't think that's a problem i like to work quite a bit and i think i really pitch better and the ball sinks better when i'm a little tired and when i'm fresh i find that when i'm when i had to say four or five days rest and i come in the ball game i'm too strong the ball doesn't think it just sort of sails up there and that's what they're looking for still we saw in the ninth inning again why don kessinger is the all-star shortstop for the nasa he's come up with these plays all year long hasn't it well he's been tremendous you know you can't really believe him and when you see him i came over here in 1966 he almost knocked the bat out of his hands and he didn't make too many of the plays and and the last couple years he's just been tremendous he's made himself a good hitter and as you saw in the ninth inning he went into behind second base there i thought it might be a base hit but he made a great play and flipping it to becker to get the force out i'd say it was a big play of the game phil regan congratulations on a good save today and we hope to see you again soon i'm sure we will right after the all-star game thank you tonight maybe during the australian thank you phil regan let's go back up to kurt again the final score of the chicago cubs seven and the philadelphia fills four cubs actually won this game in the third inning with a four-run outburst featured by a three-run homer by willie smith the winning pitcher ferguson jenkins has now won 12 and lost six and a loser rick wise has won six and lost seven so this is kurt gowdy on behalf of tony kubak saying this game is authorized under television rights granted by major league baseball solely for the entertainment of our
