this is wgn television 9 in chicago your chicago cubs and white sox baseball station hi everybody this is jimmy pearsall with leadoff man brought to you by dan lee's garage world number one in custom built garages with over 60 000 homeowners sold open saturdays and sundays till five open daily noon till eight pm [Music] hi everybody welcome to leadoff show my guest certainly is leading things off right here in boston with a lot of excitement a fellow who played 10 years in fenway park had a lifetime batting average of 284 hit about 165 home runs and the white sox are glad to have them the change from that white sox from the red sox uniform to the white sox uniform kind of exciting or kind of sad well i think we ran the full gamut of emotions in this particular move you know we're happy we're sad we're excited we're a little disappointed but it's it's a challenge jimmy and i there's nothing i like better in this world than a challenge i think that with this club it's a over the years it's been just a little living experienced and in their approach to the game hopefully with lesinsky on the floor and myself and some of the experience that the players have have accomplished over the last couple years i think we can put a very very competent and exciting team on the field we'll be right back right after this message with some more talking about baseball jimmy pierce all back at fenway park for opening day with the temperature 70 degrees on a cloud in the sky carlton fisk have you ever seen an opening day like this before in new england it's tough to get an opening day like this jimmy uh usually it's about 35 degrees and the wind's blowing about 30 miles an hour so it makes it really uncomfortable but do you have long underwear on today yes i do why well you never know in new england you figure if you don't like the weather just wait a minute and it'll change but i think it's going to be a great day for the people to watch a game it's going to be a great day for the players to play your opinion of this team now you've had a chance to do a lot of catching you've seen maybe not all the pitchers have received them uh what kind of a team you think we're gonna have i think we're gonna have an exciting team i think we're gonna have a team that can compete too and i i'm when you say exciting you mean be able to come from behind where i think we're gonna be able to show the people that the chicago white sox know how to play the game i think we can hit and run we can steal a base we can score runs i think our pitching staff can pitch well enough to keep us in any ball game all year long and i think more importantly that element of never giving up of coming from behind and just knowing that we are confident that we are competitors and we're definitely going to be contenders your impression of our starting staff now do you feel that do you like to having shakeoff pictures or do you like to have them go along with you because you know the hitters well i don't think it's important for myself personally to care whether a pitcher shakes me off or not i call a ball game no i think if i call a ball game and things are working out pretty well then the pitcher's gonna go with me now if if he wants to shake me off and has maybe a little bit of an idea on what he wants to do i don't mind that at all as long as he's got an idea and he's and he's got a purpose that he wants to achieve out there you know we had trouble with uh picking off runners or holding runners on uh will you remind a pitcher an awful lot about what's going on in a ball game so they give you a better shot at the guy running i think that's part of my job to make him fully aware of the situation that he's in whether it be he's coasting along with a five nothing lead a pitcher can be just as much trouble then if he doesn't think about it as he can if he's good man on first and third and one out in a tie ball game so i think that my job back there is to make him fully aware of the situation he's in and uh just for me to remind him not to lose his aggressiveness out there you know you're going to hit third with lozinski hitting behind you i got to believe you're going to get a few pitches that you didn't get last year well i know last year throughout the course of the year i had a lot more breaking balls thrown to me than ever before i had i had fifth and sixth last year hitting third this year with guys like lefleur on base if and when he's on and i come up he's always a threat so you might see a few more fastballs with the guys like luzinski hitting behind me they're not going to want to walk me to get to him so i think it's with leflore and myself and lozinski and bainsey i have to be impressed with daisy this spring what about you randy's always impressed me you know even he only ended up hitting 255 last year which was a little unbelievable when i looked at the final stats because he always wore us out when i played for the red sox but i do believe that he uh he's one of the one of the young super talents of the game bernazard at second base was another guy that i really was happy to see the way he played in springfield and hit well don't forget he can run well too he can run well if he can catch the ball he can play every day for this team and uh i think that tony roose is uh happy that we've improved ourselves in that area i think too that uh crews being hurt though might give allman a shot uh and he's an experienced infielder might be able to play a lot he's got experience and not just at shortstop he's played a little bit of third base some second base and if if the need be he could play first base so i think he can play all the in-field positions and him being that versatile is going to make him very valuable to this team are you scared today no i'm not scared i've just got about 8 000 butterflies running around in my stomach but it's going to be it's going to be strange all right we'll be right back right after these messages i'm sorry to keep it any longer thank you very much i love you let me just do it jimmy pierce all back at fenway park almost game time on opening day and carlton fisk lots of good luck get a home run the first time up well i just hope that we can come out here with winner today we're looking forward to exciting ball game okay we got a rolex watch for you thank you very much the 10th day of april remarkable a capacity crowd the lineups are just being introduced now by the pa man sherm feller a lady is going to throw out the first baseball today her name is stoney stone see if i can find her here what's what's curious about this lady is that she wants to throw the ball to carlton fisk who's no longer a member of the boston red sox she's a great fisk fan and she almost turned down the honor of tossing out the first ball because they tried to explain to her that carlton fisk would be on the other side of the field and they finally talked her into it so mrs stone is going to throw out the first ball all right let's pick up these lineups around the floor leading off in left field mike squires at first base now let's pick up the uh listen to your reaction with the weather the way things are going the new players we got the players that can play better we know than last year uh i think that uh it's important we get off to a good start but i think this ball club the more they play together the better they're going to play tomorrow's an off day both clubs will work out here then sunday the white sox end this road trip in boston returning home sunday night monday will be press day at comiskey park both the milwaukee brewers and the chicago white sox will be working out and tuesday will be the homeowner a hobo home owner harry get that all out try it again coach one more time the home opener tuesday afternoon against milwaukee and there are still seats available and boy i'd like to see an all-time record crowd i think the record is around 50 000. mrs stone settles for gary allen and gives him a kiss after tossing out the first ball now she's going to do it again for the benefit of the camera she says probably says to gary allen but son i want to wish you well [Applause] you've already had the lineups remember now there's still seats available for the opening game of the season next tuesday afternoon and even more seats and better locations for the wednesday game against the milwaukee brewers then thursday will be an off day and then the same boston red sox come into town friday afternoon saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon service to and from the ballpark free parking and free shuttle bus service on opening day at the mp theater at 42nd and halstead well how can you beat those potatoes even your parking for free all you got to do is buy a ticket that's not getting the ballpark hey harry i looked at the lineup we have six different names starting in this line of course squire's been with us but the other five have not so a great indication that we're going to see things happen and a lot of things that are going to be different marty springstead will be the plate umpire joe brinkman will work at first base dale ford at second base daryl cousins at third base 35 is ralph hauck tony la russa across from him the white sox wearing their dark blue shirts and white pants i've noticed that they haven't worn the all blue uniform as an ensemble yet i guess they you know they have a big contest coming up we'll tell you more about that a little bit later on uh where the fans and the designers are going to compete in entries is thursday may the 7th for further information call margie korschak or iris krasnow at margie korshak associates the phone number seven five one two one two one and with that out of the way play ball harry dennis sexually boy what a year he had last year for him the first losing season he was 12 and 14 but overall he's 89 and 64. and against the white sox overall he has won six and lost four last year he was two and one he's tough he struck out lifetime 900 batters and only walked 340 so he can be awfully tough all right here we go the first pitch of the season around the floor in the batter's back fastball low inside laflore we had 257 last year with four homers 39 runs batted in that was at montreal accuracy that evens the count of the ball and a strike the wind is blowing towards the right field stands will help left-handed batters a little bit 64 degrees they say strong and he missed the sinking possibility eckersley is real tough on right-handers he comes sidearm underarm he kicks that leg high he's hard to pick up left-handers have pretty good luck but right-handers chase him a lot because they're not used to following that kind of a pitch around the floor who hasn't seen dennis eckersley for a couple years there you see old glory starch towards right field slider missed outside two balls two strikes boy he has kept everything away from the floor certainly hasn't watch that catcher allison he really gets down low because he wants him to keep that ball down and outside two two pitch line drive base that's the way to start the season left floor battled them hard went to two and two and drilled a single in the right boy he is really tough eckersley has a terrible move to first base harry so we might see some action here right away well as soon as the floor gets on the ball game starts we want to welcome our producer here dick flanders who used to work with us a few years back then away enjoying the all the luxuries of studio work the past couple of years now we got them out here where the real people are and uh harry he hired me all day here's the throw of the first runner back and we're so tickled to death to have a chance to send our white sox telecast your way by way of one of the great stations of the world the superstation channel nine dan pecara great white sox fan jack jacobson harry you know they call him coach over there yeah well we call everybody coach sure jake finley the old northwestern basketball flash joe antella squires is going to try to pull if he can here's the pitch strikeoff run around at first base ron leflore who last year stole 97 bases in the national league you know he's been bothered with a hamstring pull so he might not be going i have a feeling he'll go all right now the stretch accuracy ready there's a throw he draws a bad throw he'll wind up at second base and now had he been heading the other way they would have given him third but since he's going back towards first they'll only give them the one bait you know you said the right thing when you said the game starts when he gets out first base he creates a lot of errors and that's what he's going to do watch this move now he doesn't have a good move and i don't see he throws quickly but he doesn't have a good one he throws it a little bit wide but it looks like that would have been a close play looked like he should have caught that ball all right we have a runner at second base nobody out that play has ruled an air on eckersley here squires now low outside it's even more important now for him to hit the ball to the first base side because if he does we'll have a runner at third only one out he's changed his delivery to left-handers lee staying the pitching coast for boston has got him shortening up on his pitching arm and just trying to flip it up there inside squires takes a strike in the outside corner well on channel nine this year both the cubs and the white side i'm sure in other television station in the country can do that two strikes and a ball come on spanky they won't know where to write their letters the pitch on the way outside ball two well that was the count on the floor single to right two balls two strikes you won't see lefleur try to steal third with a left-hander up there especially with nobody out one of our good friends ed smith ted martin ron norman all that gang down and sarasota are watching down there today two two pitch i got it right in the booth you can come out from underwater boy harry that poor lady over there lost her classes why to caught that 20. nobody ever said coming into the ballpark and sitting in the special vip suits the sweets was safe i want to tell you right now here that lady's scared she wants to go home looking at jews with freighter there's tony larussa the young manager of the white sox two balls two strikes the pitch right back to the punter oh they could have trapped him in second but the floor gets back eckersley was afraid of maybe leflore duking him somewhere see no matter if lefleur's got a bad leg he knows that he's going to scare a lot of people as part of this comes to the plate listen to the reaction sambo's mostly cheer [Applause] boy just read his mind i wonder what look at him standing ovation some standing some not you know i said to fish you don't have to be nervous you can't get fired [Applause] so here he is the first time he has played against the red sox in the regular season he's always been one of their stars the pitch by eckersley fastball inside ball one lesinsky waiting on deck harry i asked him about facing eckersley i think it'll help him because he caught him so much he said no it's all together different when you stand up at the plate and catch one ball no strikes fisk who hit 289 with 18 homers last year the floor lead slider in their beauty of strike call and anxiously got that ball up i'm surprised this didn't pounce on it lucinski was really putting on a show in batting practice yesterday and again today he's on deck white sox would like to get out in front they bunch fisk in center field the pitch he had a good cut harry you're right he's keeping that ball up that was a fast ball that time that stayed up there he keeps doing that with the way the wind blowing out of here joe carnell our telecast back in chicago there's another old friend who worked with us for you several years i miss him harry doing my scoresheet two strikes and a ball it's about time you work for a living long lead by the fly goes swung on a bouncing ball oh i wish i guess he couldn't take it with two strikes he's an easy out at first base lafleur had third base stolen he certainly did very easy didn't show any occasion that his leg was bothering him then but i think that this was a little bit fooled at that pitch he got a fastball a previous one that time he got a high breaker ball he was way out in front here is greg lozinski now with a rendered third two out eckersley got both squires and fists to tap back to the mound striker's unable to advance the man here's the stretch the pitch swings and he found it back who do you think who had the highest batting average against the red sox last year jim morrison the guy who isn't playing today lamar johnson 440 runner at third base to out the pitch he didn't mean to swing the ball hits his back dribbles foul leads in the whole strike two harry a great power hitter like wazinski really will have trouble with eckersley because he hasn't seen him before he's got a different motion and he's also got great stuff greg blizinski batting in the american league for the first time in his life two strikes or nothing the delivery slider barely missed outside you notice how he stands way up in front of the plate he doesn't stand deep in the box he stands away so he can get that sinker or breakable before it breaks two strikes on the ball came out a great exhibition of pitching by dennis lee and it is no runs one hit one air one left we go to the bottom of the first nose skull [Music] perry carey and jimmy pearson back at fenway park charlie lubin who's one of the investors in the chicago white sox sitting down with roland heyman and eddie einhorn the president of the ball club will be our post-game guest today there you see brit burns our best pitcher a year ago brit burns 15 and 13 last year with a great era of 2.84 what a rookie year he stands 6'5 young man is 218 pounds he's 21 years old and let me tell you he has really matured he made 32 starts last year he completed 11. he had two relief jobs pitched 238 innings his strikeout record was pretty good 133 strikeouts and he only walked 63. he won one and lost none in 1980 against the red sox fastball curveball slider change he'll change speeds so it's going to be quite a pitching goal i believe today here we go with dwight evans to lead it off he had 266 last year with 18 homers during his career he's hit 261 against a white side he's kind of got to hurt you with the long ball and they moved him up into the leadoff spot this year and he's been doing a good job at drawing bases on ball mary hulk said he'd like to start off one to nothing once in a while and he's moved him up from eight and ninth position where he hit all last year so here's dwight evans and the first pitch by brett byrne right down the middle of beauty a striker's call red burn just 21 years old [Applause] now the delivery that evens a counterbalance strike a jam-packed ballpark straight away they play evans curve a little high ball two better get that pitch down man we'll hit it up in there burns walks off the rubber you notice before before he went to his mouth he made sure he was off the the mound because if he's still on the mound he's penalized by a ball being called [Applause] fouled it back he's evened up two and two they're giving him a lot of left field and left center field now is lefleur straight away and over towards right center is lemon and baines is playing straight away and as harry says he can hit this ball out of right field because he's strong there's the old major ralph halp here's manager of the yankees then other clubs now with the red sox two-two pick all three come on don't walk the lead off man three balls to strike when you got to lay the ball in there it's right down evans alley 3-2 pitch fouled it back and out of play well he's showing you how much stuff he's got with a 3-2 count evans couldn't even pull that ball so it must be really moving away and down holy cow it's great to start another season can't beat the fun at the old park huh coach i'll say you can't especially under perfect weather conditions three balls two strikes big pitch popped it up he ought to be taken care of squires in foul territory one away evans fouls the spider squires had his glasses on but didn't put him down he didn't need him sometimes you put the glasses down you don't need it it will hurt your vision well the white sox a year ago lost to baltimore five to three in their opener at home and i was kidding steve trout who was a loser in that game i said well another opening day in you already one game ahead of a year ago because there's no way you can lose this game unless he relieves here now is dave stapleton who is keeping a great second baseman on the bench because stapling's a right-handed hitter against burns jerry remy not playing curve a dandy a striker i don't know coach he's getting a high strike yeah he better get that ball down his fastball is really alive hey jimmy they've they fixed those windows and that insurance company over yeah i gave him a few dollars to help him out here's a strength to a good fastball two strikes or nothing brett burns weren't they popping out for about a year they spent millions of millions of dollars rid burns ready balls short right ray drop banes now on the run makes the cut up to now baines got a terrific jump on that ball because it looked to me and same to you like it was going to fall easy but bane's caught that ball head high [Applause] well bob crumby our good uh not a good friend i've never met him but i feel like he's a friend because i see him on the tube a lot book reviews and so forth he's responsible for britt burns everybody remembers that story uh bob cromie was passing through birmingham alabama when he read the sports page and read about this kid what he'd been doing in high school at huffman high school with a career with a era of 0.12 he had won 35 and lost two during his high school career gave up only 30 hits and only 30 walks and two 292 strikeouts 139 innings so he scribbled a little note on the write-up and he sent it to bill beck and that dispatched a scout to watch the kid here he is in the big leagues there's a spike call i talked to ken silvestri about that he was the scout that they decided yeah he said i sang that was only in 78. now here we are 81. he's a full-fledged star joe rudy the batter a good hitter making his debut with the red sox bothered by injuries the last three or four years and really not been able to play a full season two strikes or nothing to count fastball outside harry just see fist that time move the ball out that's good catching boy i like to see a catcher move around i like rudy's batting stance watch how he stands the rear end of the batter's box hey young players now see him choke up with two strikes on him you don't go way down the end of the bat he's just trying to protect the plate now everybody is walking up here boy he must not have seen it you know what he did he wasn't looking for a breaking ball two balls two strikes i mean the umpire marty springsteen a bank an executive on a with a bank during the winter time that's his problem i'll never put my money in his bank i'll tell you that everybody on the field was moving but him two balls two strikes three boy he had him two strikes and no balls and now he's got to come in with a fastball and carlton fisk is talking the spring step back over his shoulder i think springtrad knew he's wrong because usually if a catcher does that he chews them out immersively three balls two strikes on joe rudy be careful don't groove one to the sky burns does a dance on the mound you know harry with a full crowd and i firmly believe this and you're at home and i found is that a hitter the umpire don't deliberately give you this but for some reason it seems to go the other way watch the replay on that fifth all right well might have been a low just barely there's jim rice did 294 last year with 24 homers and 86 ribbies and they said he had a terrible year he had a broken hand yeah slices and fouled into the mezzanine box seat i got to believe if i'm the center fielder right now and the way this ballpark is anyways you might as well play over in right center because burnsie's turning that ball over and they're falling to the right if you play in the left center if the ball isn't hard you ain't going to catch it anyways one strike or nothing jim rice is he strong don't make a mistake curveball a little bit inside rice you know many times several times has broken the bat while swinging it before he even hits the ball the snap of his wrist that's how strong he is he's already hit 196 homers in about six years change of pace high remember jim gentile yeah i used to see him swing at a pitch and he'd backlash himself and break his bat on his back so he has averaged about uh better than 30 homers a year for six years he'll go over the 200 mark this season two bonds and a strike on the dangerous right hand hitter jim rice there's a broken back base hit a runner will go to third baines up with the ball runners at first and third throughout bryce busted his back as he single to right all this action is caused by the umpire missing that third strike and as i said he's thrown the ball hard burns and broke that bet on an inside pitch now watch this pitch right in on his fist and he gets a little looper jim rice one of the highest paid players at 700 000 a year here now is their great rbi man last year he drove in 105 runs 25 homers you know harry all ball players like to get that first hit of the season rice is tickled to death with it here's a dangerous right hand batter now runners at first and third rudy the runner at third rice at first [Applause] [Music] [Applause] strike on the outside corner you noticed last year burns was always tougher in the stretch he throws good i wish there was somebody else batting though this guy is mr rbi no why that evens it a ball and a strike he's pitching him away and that's no weakness of perez who hits the ball to right field right center and left center very well boy look at the gap in right center this outfield from senator right foul line is awfully big now the 1-1 pitch better get that ball down and now he's ahead of him two strikes on a ball see what happens when the empire doesn't give you that low pitch then you got to come up and you get in trouble we have an off day tomorrow the teams will be working out the final game before we return home will be sunday it will be sunday afternoon no television sunday our next television will be next friday afternoon against the red sox there'll be no television of the tuesday wednesday openers hey strzok he chased a bad ball so it is no runs one hit nowheres two left at the end of one no score [Music] hurry sale ends may 15th this year harry kerry back at fenway park as we're going on to the top of the second with no score leading it off will be chet lemon fatty down at 292 last year well both clubs got a man at third but didn't score meme and bob byrne from glen ellen are here tom durr mike healey brendan o'sullivan shore and the irish are here today wire from tom peklansky from whiting indiana a great sox fan here's lemon he was going to bunk strike is in their car boy carney langsford was way deep and way off the bag at third lemon didn't have a good year against the red sox last year he had 211 and only drove in two runs he didn't hit any home runs at fenway park tom and susan elam formerly a park ridge are here they had a cup you missed boy accuracy looks very sharp oh yeah they tell me this spring he was good his back botted him a lot last year and that's what gave him so much trouble but he did get 30 starts so lemon is the whole two strikes or nothing just barely missed with a slider lens andro who's a student a law student in boston college pulling for the white sox here today chet lemon who leads the team almost every year in being hit by pitch balls with a count of two strikes and the ball was hit by a pitch and we have a lead off man on again watch this ball follow him the target is inside now watch he turns it over and it just keeps coming at him i think it hits him in the leg inside leg yes it did his right leg they're looking at his arm sort it hit his leg putting on his glove he's hermit schneider comes out look at these this belt-like figure of herman schneider remember how heavy he was last year he went on a terrific diet and he's lost 65 pounds well he is amazing he does a lot of jogging too on the plane you know how you eat that junk all the time he doesn't seem as funny as he used to be no he's very serious essentially but he wants to say hello to his wife and he'll be home sunday night he's a great fellow a wonderful trainer he does have a great sense of humor a likable young man harry the big thing he gets is the respect of the players here's harold baines bainsi hit 255 as a rookie last year with 13 homers here's a guy who's able to pull that ball into the corner lemon the runner at first nobody out eckersley ready he's shortened up his hip to bunt the ball pops out of the catcher's glove lemon can out of damp harry you were here watching batting practice yesterday i think baines put on the show as good as you can hit the ball over the right field fans seen it out here about 15 times and it is how about luzinski yeah but i mean it's it's 380 and 420 it's only 300 feet down that line yeah but look how high that fence is i hit him out of here yeah i'm talking about what this is luzinski could hit him out here with a fungo get blowing on it that's right accuracy ready strike call over the outside corner accuracy getting good location with most of his pitches baines and spring training hit the ball to left field a lot in fact he hit a home run over the left field fence about 400 feet on a line in sarasota two strikes and a ball he's in the hole there's a long drive but it's foul deep in the right field against the facade it's a roof that's the that's the facade of the roof but that's a sexy name no that's the edge okay now if it's on top of the room but i'll tell you what he hit it he hit in a mile but it's still a foul ball no matter what you call it two strikes in the ball we had a good cut but he found it back he was really pulling that pitch a little bit inside and his bat was well out in front harry what i've noticed about him in spring training he is steady up at the plate last year he'd move around a lot with his hands now he just stands there steady and swings right from where he's standing now watch how steady he is the bit high pop fly that's going to stay in play the shortstop hoffman the wind blowing it and everybody is safe they misplayed the ball hoffman thought he was under and the wind was blowing it the other way and it dropped and short left for a hit runners at first and second and nobody out and it's an ill win that doesn't blow somebody some good well watch this he starts over for it and well you see now he's going to go as hard as he can to the line but now the ball starts to blow back and he's nowhere near it watch this you know harry they talk about this and that when you lose a burleson who knows this ballpark like a back of his hand and you lose a linen center field and a fisk you got to believe you are really hurting well you got to give lemon a lot of credit too a lot of times on a routine pop fly that everybody assumes is going to be caught the runner doesn't go very far down the line just holds up at first base there's a ball what a lousy bump and pop to the pitcher eckersley oh man well harry you know jim last year did a terrific job bunny he had something like 13 out of 15 butt hits and could lay the ball down he just got a tough pitch up and in and didn't take it so now we have one out runners at first and second and here's tony bernizzard making his american league debut on that other play on the blue pit by baines that the huffman lost in the sun are misplayed in the wind or whatever lemon went almost all the way down to second base and thus he was able to reach there without a force play being made bernard who hit 224 from montreal last year had a great spring hit over 340. the delivery over the outside corner the knee is strike call a left-handed batter has got to look for that ball away if he throws it inside he generally moves him away from the plate he's a switch header batting left-handed against eckersley strike call boy burns couldn't get that pitch look at bernie's art he's talking to him about a little bit but you're on the road son swing that bat two strikes or nothing runners of first and second crown ball the play is to second base for a force out [Applause] ernazard forces baines [Music] stable in the hufflepuff puts it up to bill allman who's playing because todd cruz has had a backhand you know harry he's done something though he's playing could place a cruise and also in place of prior who's been here for a couple of years so bill almond who did 263 in montreal 170 with the mets last year originally broke in with san diego as a bonus baby out of brown university the pet low outside almost a wild pitch a good save by gary allen he looked back to see where the ball went and it was within his globe outfield bunches the hitter in center field not too deep anywhere almonds got pretty good power oh for a hit here start of the swing held up sliders in the first strike off you notice the right hand hitters harry their body starts to move just as the pitcher starts his motion because he's got so much motion and his ball is quick so hellman is in the hole as bobby winkle's coaching at third swings and he missed the strike two two strikes and the ball boy he got that slider up high and allman had a good cut but missed it looks like both teams are having trouble today hitting that ball in the jam and they're swinging at high pitches perez struck out on a very high pitch see the pitching mess yeah so again the white side miss an opportunity no runs one blue pit no errors two left we're going to the bottom of the second no score [Music] harry carey back at fenway as we go down to the bottom of the second the red sox avoided trouble accuracy continues to pitch well one game underway in the american league besides this one at the end of two kansas city and baltimore tied up 2-2 there's courtney lansford making his debut with the red sox slow curve foul down the right field line harry i predict that this young man will do very well in fenway park he is a good hitter he hits the ball a lot to right center when you throw him breaking stuff he'll pull it but he's a kind of a hitter that just looks to hit the ball where it's pitched you've got to pitch him down he had 15 homers for the angels last year with 80 runs about it in he's wearing glasses this year something he didn't a year ago swings late he's in the hole strike two two strikes and nothing see the flag is blowing right out to right not too heavy now too heavy no but the air is heavy courtney lansford red hot hitter the spring for the red sox strikes to nothing [Applause] fastball a little bit inside he just tapped me on the shoulder a moment ago and said you could forget spring training you can play that championship season it's all to get a different yes it is lansford's only 24. big kid swings and he pops a foul back well i'm impressed with burns's fastball he has not had anybody pull the ball the left side yet two strikes and the ball white sox at home next tuesday afternoon against the milwaukee brewers and seats are still available live all ought to be caught by lebanon center field hit him right on the fist good pitch hey harry i like that free parker tell me where that lot is i want to go over there that's at the international anthony theater oh for free for free all you do go over there at 42nd and half stead on opening day park your car for free and then get a free bus ride over to the ballpark and then when you return you do the same thing it doesn't cost you a nickel maybe you and i can get a concession over there here's the pitch and it's a little high to glenn hoffman he hit 285 last season his dad sang the national anthem this young man has got a big role with this ball club and he's played third but he's originally a shortstop strike call that ball handcuffed fisk he's throwing hard and keeping the ball down that time springstead the empire behind the plate gave him that strike one out glenn hoffman the batter fastball barely missed outside you know you wonder right now though if burns throwing so hard so early will he have anything later well that's what bullpens are for i guess oh yeah but i'm just curious to see let's see how far he can go with this kind of stuff he's throwing hard strike two called over the outside corner as you would say harry he's young he's good looking he's single he's still single that makes them smarter than a lot of people i know boy harry that's the truest thing you've ever said to me the pets hey struck him out on a bad curveball good from burns standpoint bad from the standpoint of whether it's a strike or not goes down swinging now watch picture tells itself right here real bad that's what hoffman is saying right now why did i swing at that yeah i'll get in next time though i got number two for burn here's gary allen the fans trying to help allison out because they know he's got to fill fiska's shoes and he's got a big job at him too like hoffman minnesota got three in the first against oakland lead three to one at the end of one there's the strike at the knees that's rick langford for oakland and erickson for minnesota gura larry gura for kansas city steve stone for baltimore they're tied 2-2 at the end of two so i'm gonna miss strike two california at seattle later the two games in the national league on this date cincinnati and atlanta san diego san francisco tonight alice is generally a pretty good pull hitter has got our infield around towards third i don't know if he'll pull fred burns the way he's throwing just missed outside how about that fisk i love to watch him work he just keeps his target down he's way down as far as he can get and he moves that pitcher around two strikes and the ball gary allen stocky right hand hitter oh what was wrong with that you know what harry i believe if this moves inside and he caught that ball back of him and it was over this plate the umpire is thinking the ball is a ball because he's out inside marty springster one thing he isn't there's a homer two two pitch star cam out a curveball [Applause] allensen caught out on strike one two three nothing across at the end of two nothing nothing [Music] harry carey and jimmy piercell at fenway park boston the first two innings beautifully pitched dennis eckersley for the red sox brit burns for the white side and the emphasis has been on the pitching the white sox have had the better chances of score they had the first two men on with nobody out in the second inning after getting amanda's second with nobody out in the first but weren't able to score key play in that second inning morrison trying to sacrifice them and along popped the ball accurately in the air and the next two men were out easy you know you might say well what's the difference if he did pop the bun up the next two guys didn't do anything but you don't know what would have happened if there were runners at second and third and that pitcher's got has a little more pressure on him that's it right there a lot of times i hear that saying you know if a guy says suppose the guy gets a base hit the next guy doesn't do this then the guy gets you never know the pitcher's the guy with the pressure he's the guy when there's men on second and third it thinks thinks differently so we go down to the top of the third inning and here's ryan lafleur who started the season with a base hit to right oh almost got hit sinking fastball low the floor with two strikes got that base and he looked terrible on two breaking balls and then hit a fastball away from the right field for a base hit now eckersley's pitch good fastball on the outside corner breaking fastball well i'm glad i'm hitting eckersley up here i think he is tough on right-handers a ball in a strike the pitch you are really inconsistent i think he'd like to retire this game is very boring to him two strikes on the ball stop [Applause] [Music] here you'll see it right here good breaking ball right outside a slider swung over the top of it might have been a ball here's mike squires squires is up in the first inning with a runner at second and nobody out he wanted to pull the ball but he tapped it back to the pitcher and the floor had to hold it second if he's going to hit second harry there's a high pop foul being chase allenson on the run [Applause] made a good effort i think he felt he was too close to the dugout but he wasn't that close now watch this play you see you say jimmy splyers isn't really a pull hitter no you can't he can't hit second no way he can hit second because even he's going to hit there then he's got to learn to drag especially against a tough pitcher he is not a pull hitter he's a left center left field hitter the only time he'll pull anybody is with mediocre stuff he hit a home run here last year i don't know it was often but it was the only home earning hitting it was off a pretty curveball he's a lousy curveball fastball high pretty good hitter though we're not saying he's a lousy hitter or he won't get base hits what we're saying is that second slot has got to have somebody to hit it behind the runner at first a ball on a strike inside an eye this is wgn television nine chicago america's number one sports station you bet your life boy am i glad to be employed by channel 9. yeah all your ex-wives now they can see me now 46 states harry all those old girlfriends of yours are old enough to have died already hey oh i got it jimmy don't worry about it i almost had it harry yeah sure where's the net with that man we should have the uh portable netherrealm well i had that well judged harry look through the sunglasses and everything three balls two strikes hey i uh i heard all about that sensational catch emanuel you didn't know that harry huh sure i knew about that how could i help you know but you only told me 110 times [Music] [Applause] [Music] harry we worked a lot on getting good leads and great training with davey nelson and i noticed it's going to help our club we may see a few guys get picked off but i think it's going to keep us more alert and of course pinson at first base is more alert as a first base coach too he was a great ball player oh boy one of the greatest and so when he tells these young guys something they gotta listen he's got the credentials here's the fit a little bit inside carlton fence with this the way he bends over the plate most pitchers in the league try to pitch him in but they better not make a mistake and get it over the plate he likes breaking stuff i gotta say he's a breaking ball hitter with that kind of a stance 33 years old broke in with the red sox and 71. this started spring training rather late but seem to be coming around his last five games and there's his son right there he runs the t-nut it comes that's inside two balls and a strike one out one on we're in the third inning no score boy he went down that right field line it'll score mike squire is a pretty good base runner carlton fist looking at bobby winkles [Music] [Applause] trying from third oh he's out and recover the ball well that's terrible base running no excuse for that harry you've got to wait until that ball caught so you don't get much of a jump you're still you've got to be moving on a ball like that that may fall in down the line watch this now the wind again gives the third baseman who is new here and the shortstop new playing now watch what happens carney langsford gives up on the ball now watch here comes rice he should catch the ball and it bounces off his glove right there but hoffman give him credit he hustles to his feet he's looking for the ball now watch the pitcher i believe takes this ball and takes him out easy he's in he's out by a mile by a mile that's a terrible base running and he did that in florida too harry they gotta get some heads up base running here's lucinski he swings and he fouls it back boy we have two breaks in this ball game and have not taken advantage of one yet the batter a runner at first two out that's a second hit that should have been an easy pop fly out let's drop so the white sox have three hits but two of them have been top flies oh boy a good slider at the knees harry any time a fly ball is hit any over the infield and it's just behind the infield and it's having trouble with the infielders you're lucky to just move up a little bit to watch because you're standing still then if the ball drops you might as well just stay there because it's suicide i guess he thought the ball would roll farther away from hoffman hayes struck him out swinging i'll bet he thought nobody was covering third because the pitcher cover tagged him out so it is no runs one hit no errors one left we're moving to the bottom of the third no score harry carey back at fenway park as we go down to the bottom of the third with no score the white sox have had some opportunities but haven't been able to capitalize on them harry had thrown a third base there's a charlie lubin one of the investors next to him to his right that's eddie einhorn and laureen feyling fay dill fatal fadil uh sitting there in front row right next to the white sox dugout charlie lubin oh mr cheesecake he used to own sara lee and sold them for millions and millions of millions i enjoyed they sold out to consolidated food here's rick miller to lead it off he's talking to his brother-in-law carlton fisk who's catching for the white house here's the pitch probably doesn't even like him hey i gotta correct that play at third base carney langsford took that throw and made the tag he got back in a hurry i think squires must have saw must have seen hoffman on the grass and figured he wouldn't get up in time because he was out such a wide margin it really made him look bad rick miller whatever it is we're not hitting anymore the curve is inside this guy is definitely a left field hitter so they're bunching them towards left and giving them all of right field accuracy is struck out four in three innings but burns is fanned three and two and boy big strikeouts too harry in every inning he got lucinski twice there's a high pump fly let's see what happens on this one hey they let the ball drop somebody should have caught it you know what's happening these new players on both ball clubs are going to get used to each other that ball's got to be caught especially where he was playing he was playing shallow on him and just gave up because he thought somebody else was going to take it lefleur and bill allman thought lafleur would catch it it's opening day and i think everybody's got the jitters one encouraging note about the white sox they have three hits and shouldn't have any so you gotta figure that some legitimate hits are gonna be coming their way as we go along now they should have one of the three lefleur hit a line drive to right yes the other two are high pop flies on the infield that should have been caught i just don't like to see a ball club that wants to get going make them kind of mistakes we're making pay struck him out a good curveball strikeout number four great pitching here's evans the lead off man look at that curveball right in there look at harry they had one two three four five six seven eight nine hitters so far and nobody's hit the ball left side off a burn here's dwight evans one out eddie einhorn is the president of the chicago white sox and he's a general partner along with jerry reinsdorf who's the chairman of the board does the line drive right field bane's coming over nice makes the catch nicely just like plucking cherry well i want to tell you that ball was hit like a rope hooking away and baines who i said in spring training showed me today has really improved and i think it's maturity harry more than anything else well you know he was force fed last year we didn't have anybody and they brought him up a year or two before he should have been up he's only uh 21 years old 22 now beans remember the first game of against baltimore he dropped two balls frightened to death two men are out here's dave stapleton ball game in the third kansas city out in front of baltimore 3-2 at the end of three and oakland has tied minnesota 3-3 at the end of two see where minnesota's had an all-time opening day record better than 42 000 yesterday usually about two weeks work for them isn't it everybody broke record yesterday it seemed like new york the biggest yeah they set an all-time record 55 000. plus how about bobby mercer hitting a pinch hit homerun in the seventh with the bases drunk i'll bet you that don zimmer wakes up screaming bucky dent in the middle of the night he does it he hit another three-run homer off him yesterday now zimmer's with the rangers the first scoring for the yankees was bucky dense three-run homer did you know he didn't hit a blooper like they said he had here he had a line drive in left center field in new york and that's a long poke two men are out three balls no strikes on dave stapleton walked him on four pitches that's not like brett burns fists going into bound to tell a young man he's pushing the ball a little bit and throwing up straight and if you notice burn always overemphasizes when he follows through and if he stands up a little bit he loses control he don't walk man he struck out 133 last year and only walked 63 and for a rookie that was super great the smallest opening day crowd of all yesterday was 33 000 in seattle the cubs were next lows with 37 all the rest drew 40 and better harry 33 000 in seattle is a lot of people you have to give them away to get them in there here's joe rooney a dangerous hitter he walked his first time but they have some players that might excite some people harry the last time up he had rudy struck out a couple of times so fist thought and then he walked him then rice singled right on a broken bad hit but he struck out perez to get out of the inning remember that uh uniform designing contest that's just gotten underway harry i want to see you in one of those designing uniforms i'm going to be one of the judges no no i want to see you wear it oh i did that already this is a strike call last year uh phil risotto wore one for the yankees and jack buck for the cardinals and me for the white sox all designed by name designers halston uh de la renta or something like that new york in new york did they have a pouch for you i noticed one thing that had those uh loose uh pants you know oh really clam digger oh just like the white socks usually i used to hate the pants we used to have because the elastics were so tight that would stop the circulation these uniforms that they wear are the best uniforms in the world not necessarily ours looking but our uniforms wearing are excellent two balls and a strike on joe rudy bottom of the third good hook he was way out in front on that red burn two balls two strikes big pitch i noticed the batting coach johnny pesky working with rudy you know usually a veteran doesn't like to be bothered but i noticed he listened to everything he said to try to pick up something that might help him two balls two strikes line drive but here's lefleur to retire the side well will i have a moment here i certainly want to wish jack brickhouse and milo hamilton and vince lloyd and lou boudreau jack rosenberg and the gang with the cubs the greatest of seasons and i i know that they wish us the same i know it's going to be a great year here on channel nine well this is harry carey i'm going over the radio for a little while jimmy and joel be holding fourth here the score at the end of three well both teams have with the little boy shot at nothing mobile showcase network presents agatha christie's the seven dials mystery starring cheryl campbell and sir john gielgud hosted by peter eustinov hello everybody and welcome to opening day 81 this is joe mcconnell very happy to be coming your way this year on wgn tv channel nine as chat lemon fouls the first pitch down and back no score we're in the top of the fourth inning the white sox been helped out a little bit but the elements here a couple of pop flies have dropped in safely to shallow left field for hits but they've not been able to score chad levin his first time up was hit by a pitch strike a beauty on the outside corner on two actors lee will really challenge that right-handed banner particularly a hitter like chet lemon jimmy who crowds the plate anyway if he's gonna throw him a fastball he's gonna throw it inside and then he wants him to chase that bad breaking ball and something about the fans right now are a little bit mad about something but lemon can hit it out of here he has never hit a home run against the red sox his career he struck him out and made it look easy that's five strikeouts for wreckers lee brit burns is not four i think these two pitchers have got the best stuff they could ever have they're throwing hard the first ball pulled off of burns was the last time when rudy the line drive to left field baines i'll tell you right now he can do an awful lot with that bat and he can hit a home run out of this park because the wind is really blowing the right right now he takes the ball up and away he would have hit one out of here had it not been for the wind earlier because it helped push it foul last year he had a rope right around the foul pole one of his two home runs against the red sox's rookie year pops this one up foul third base side the wind may keep this one in play and it does and this time they handle it and lanford makes the catch of the warning track right in front of the sox dugout joe i gotta believe that connie langsford who's been playing in california for a long time the win very seldom with blowing anaheim now playing next to a new shortstop for him in hoffman and a new left fielder they're a little bit confused with the way the wind blows here and they really done us a favor but we have played el stinko after we've gotten the hit jimmy morrison who tried to get a bunt down and popped it up to the pitcher eckersley his first time up and morrison generally uh one of the best butters on the ball club had 12 bunch singles last year good heart slider belt high inside corner all in one heckersley looks razor sharp now so he tied the first two batters here in the top of the fourth he shows no signs of a bad back morrison rolls one out to the shortstop often glenn throws in time and the white sox go down one two three in the top of the fourth inning midway through the fourth here at fenway park no score [Music] after 13 years the cubs and the sox are back together again don't miss the baseball action when the cubs battle the new york match tomorrow afternoon at 1 on wgn television nine chicago and america's number one sports station don't forget our next sox telecast our white sox and the same boston red sox on friday april 17th at one o'clock who is that jimmy i really don't know he looks like he wore it out the face yeah we've got somebody heating up in the red sox panda left-hander is it tudor yeah mark tudor i wonder uh if maybe eckersley isn't stepping up well opening up a bit i would like that very much yes so would i very much because we've got a couple of right-handers sitting down at dugout would like to hit john tutor a left-hander heating up in the red sox bullpen posinski if he didn't he got the worst break in his life having to face eckersley the first two times here's mr rice leading off the home half of the fourth for the red sox he looped a single to right the only hit so far off britt burns there's a change up curve and a beauty brit has changed up more today than i've ever seen before and obviously fisk is uh calling the shots here he obviously knows his ball club very well he certainly does and i was talking before the game and he says if they shake me off that's all right with me but he says i know the beginners pretty well in both ways fouled out of play two strikes to count on rice brett has walked two and he is fan four and the only time really when he looked like his control might be a bit shaky was late in the previous inning when he walked stapled on four straight pitches and then got behind rudy on two to jim rice who last year did not fare well against the white sox he hit only 210 against us swinging nms he threw that ball by him and handcuffed him because he had a terrible swing maybe they'll show it again i don't know if we haven't got we're just working on a feed now watch this now watch the swing he has at this ball he does not have a good swing see it up and in yeah funny cut it fooled him he had made up his mind to swing when he saw it was inside he couldn't change it well that's five strikeouts for each pitcher here's perez who struck out on a high fastball his first time up right down the pipe all in one i don't know what he was looking for but that was felt high and it split the plate right in half his fastball he turns over is awfully tough to pull that time he goes with an off-speed pitch gets it up a ball and a straight he's six feet five weighs about 218 pound burns he's only 21 years old what a year he had last year 15 and 13 and think how tough he'll be when he grows up i saw one game they gave him four earned runs that would have even made his dra lower that he shouldn't have had another ball up in the way two and one to perez one out nobody on we're in the bottom of the fourth here in the 68th opening day at fenway park in boston no score who's going to pitch the opener at home ross baumgarten all right ross due for some luck tuesday afternoon the opener against the brewers there's a strike good height schleider two and two you know why he's having trouble with that breaking ball he's giving him the same motion that he throws the fastball and he's looking for that fastball and not getting it two balls two strikes the outfields and the infield deepen around to the left for perez expecting the pull he feasted on socks pitching a year ago hit 439 with four home runs against the chicago white sox struck here by our foul tip and fist couldn't hang on you know as good as burns is pitching a lot of those fielders out there haven't touched a ball yet and it's kind of nervous the first game of the season i haven't had a ball let me get one right away so i can get that over with and if you don't think that doesn't bother a player it does brett normally does not strike out a lot of batters in the course of a ball game he'll average about four over nine innings i think his best was eight against kansas city last year eight k's in one ball game dachshund will get more he had nine twice last year which was the single game high for the sox there's a drive to left center field that's in the gap hits by le floor perez trying to make two on it throw coming in close play he's safe perez with not much speed but a smart base runner going as hard as he could go at his age about 40 years old he went to the inside and that made it slide most guys don't look slight anymore but this ball was hit hard enough when you see lemon he gets over there in a hurry now watch how quick lemon it gets by the floor lemon comes over in a hurry he picks it up and throws it right away and good tag but watch this hook slide now to the left the ball was actually there okay he just couldn't reach him good hook slide good try by bernazzard first extra base hit for either club this year the red sox have their first scoring threat perez at second base with one out he had taken two curveballs but that time he'd hit one here's carney lansford who fly to center his first time up in a red sox uniform they're gonna like him in boston he's an excellent defensive player at third and he's a great good hitter great competitor he's good he can run down that line the ball just outside lansford ended the spring training schedule down in winterhaven with a 14-game hitting string he had an off-year as most of the angels did a year ago he was a great young star he had a shot at cortisone what did he say was four or something i'm not sure oh his shoulder that's what he was worth time is called ball won the count to lansford perez perched on second with a one out double here in the bottom of the fourth inning no score [Applause] while back well that pitch was up just about let her hide he jumped after it but couldn't get it one ball one strike himself hitting the fist that looks so good for him he tried to jack up on it and swung too hard and hit him on the fist and there you see ralph hauck the major the major boy i want to tell you one of the best baseball men in the business and one of the nicer guys in the business one ball and one strike the cop to kearney lansford one and two blansford already an acknowledged star at age 24 beginning his fourth big league season he was an instant success at california boy he and yacht are really two young good players aren't they i throw castino in there well yes but i don't think castino has had the recognition no he hasn't and yet he had a sensational year a year ago he led the twins in just about every category one ball and two strikes lansford weights that looked like a knee-high fastball right over the inside part of the plate of the red sox got a break there motioned to call him out didn't he look at tony larussa he can't believe it boy this is terrible now he hasn't he's shaking his head back there and he's second guessing himself i'll say one thing umpires some days can have bad days and what a day to have one well it's been a shaky day so far for springsteen make no mistake about it two balls and two strikes big break for lansford and the red side and i don't want any letters from old umpires because i don't care [Applause] foul back good fastball 2-2 the count one on one out perez with a one out double in the gap to left center the first extra base hit of the game and only the second hit off burns full house they are backed up way under the scoreboard in center field they set 34 000 but may have a few more stuffed in the nooks and crannies of this old ballpark i always wondered why they didn't put more boxes along that right field line the 2-2 pitch on the way struck him out on a bad ball that was down and in and with weaving it up as lansford gave it right back banning on a pitch that he needed a nine-iron to hit what a gutty pitcher burns is now watch this pitch this pitch is really bad and watch him swing at this bad pitch way down and in six strikeouts for britt birds he struck hoffman out of that same pitch and here's hoffman again so far he's had a rough debut losing a couple of pop flies and shallow left fanning and is only at bat you know i thought rice could have helped him out yes the first one in particular oh don't get it up there just inside ball one i'll tell you one thing i'm such a fan today i want to win this game so bad i can taste it ball won the count antonacio perez he'll be 39 next month this is his 17th big league season he has averaged over 90 rbis a year and seven times has driven in over a hundred and 105 last year slap foul out of play i think his fastball today has got to be around 92 or 93 watching those right-handers swing at it because i know they're not guessing for a breaking ball without swinging one ball and one strike i'm getting the thrill of my life i'm using harry's mic glenn hoffman just 22 years of age only played five games in shortstop last year he has got a very large pair of shoes to fill i feel sorry for him because it is really a tough situation for this young man high fastball two and one brit turned it up on that one they tell me remy may play a lot at shortstop too well i would expect remy to play more at second base you know of all the great players the red sox have lost over the winter for a variety of reasons i think burleson along with carl and fisk are the two hardest to replace fisk for different reasons but burleson was really the heart of that ball club you know stapleton hit 321 and they don't want to get him out of the lineup [Applause] good pitch handcuffed him down and in two and two of the count you know how i described burns's curveball today a whitey ford's curveball down and in i have never seen his breaking ball more effective not at any time last year and heaven's nose he was impressive a number of times but i just like to see him having to strike out so many means he's throwing a lot of pitches 2-2 pitch bouncer to the shortstop almond this is his first try throws him out nice stretch by squares and the inning is over no runs a wasted one-hour double by perez he's left on at second and after four innings here at fenway no score of the white sox on the red side rock on chicago the original chicago keeps turning to the loop fm 98 walk on chicago here at historic fenway park on an absolutely picture-perfect day for a baseball opener bernazard allman and leflore will face denny eckersley sox have no runs on three hits the red sox no runs on two hits and boston has the only error and it's been quite a pitching performance for both eckersley and brit burns here's a look at some of the uh red sox bullpenners soupy campbell bill soupy campbell all enjoying the ball game out on the right field bullpen area heckersley has allowed three hits he has struck out five walked one and hit a better here's bernazard tony bounce into a force play from perez to the shortstop hoffman forcing morrison his first time up and he swings over the top of that sidearm sinker for a strike think that baines who was forced at second bernie's aren't batting left-handed foul tips and at home plate two strikes to count burnazard had a great spring with a bat somewhat unexpected as far as the sox were concerned he knocked in 16 runs and a couple of homers hit over 300 from both sides of the plate heckersley misses up and away with a fastball one and two the count fouled away on the third base side one ball two strikes tony bernazard leading off the fifth inning for the white sox now eckersley wants the new ball hi papa it's hoffman's while it's short now they're calling him off and it's staple that makes the catch directly behind second base other shallow center field about 50 feet out on the outfield grass one out here's alvin who struck out with two out and two out in the second inning bill hallman played with san diego montreal in the mets of the national league and this is his first american league game ball one auburn now 28 starting his fifth year in the biggs good range six feet three inches tall he bounces one to the third soccer lansford up and throwing two out we haven't had too many ground balls in the infield today well that's six in a row retired by mr eckersley and that'll bring up rhonda fleur who led off the ballgame with a hit to right advanced to second on the throwing error by eckersley got as far as third where he was left stranded when lucinski struck out in the first inning and then ronnie himself fan in the third so he is one for two good pitch inside corner on one the kansas city royals defending western division and american league planet champions leading baltimore three to two in the third in baltimore that's gura against stone the floor files it away two strikes the a's tied the twins with two off roger erickson in the second and now they're in the bottom of the third at the met tied at three apiece ericsson not sure who's pitching for oakland mike norris threw a five-hitter on opening day yesterday before a record crowd at the met 45 thousand there's a tap pass the mound voted by stapleton way too late he gets the ball to first base that might be an infield hit that was a tough chance he had to charge it and make the perfect play to get lefleur who can really fly oh they're giving stapleton an error we'll have another look at it now but he made the play cleanly it appeared he probably would have thrown him out so that's the second red sox error of the ball game now let's see if they send the floor becker's really really worked on him in the first inning until he threw one away squires is up spanky bounced back to the mound in the first finally worked to pass a walk off eckersley in the third and then was thrown out trying to go from first to third on danes pop fly single the floor's got a big lead there he goes the pitch out his call for throw to second not in time the first steal of the year that was a close play you're gonna love seeing le flora run the bases for the white sox this year he is something else 97 steals last year here's the throw they called for the pitch out good peg by allenson the floor just beat the tag first steal of the year for the white sox and now the floor is in scoring position with two outs squires has a chance to knock in the first run of the year if he can deliver here ball two just off the outside corner to these carlton fish on deck 2-0 the count to mike squires who had a sensational spring not only did he feel with his normal brilliance but he also hit over 400 that is low on inside almost untied his shoelace 3-0 i'm not convinced that squires can't be a 300 hitter he makes good contact as a hitter he's a lot like the cubs former second baseman glenn becker there's a knee-high strike three and one he'll move the ball around he'll have to give himself up a few times for the floor but generally he's going to have plenty of opportunity to swing the bat on his own behalf and if he can equal his average of a year ago or hit higher he'll drive in a lot of runs even in that number two position because la flora is going to be in scoring position a lot of the time three and one to count there's that pop-up in trouble territory shallow lap and this time hoffman makes the catch to retire the side too bad he couldn't have misplayed that one no runs no hits second red sox error leaves lefleur on at second one man left we've reached the halfway point here at fenway on opening day still no score white sox nothing boston red sox hi i'm chet lemon of the chicago white sox my teammates and i are looking forward to playing for you this season come out and catch all the action at kaminsky park the 1981 white sox are your kind of team see the socks take on the brewers red sox and orioles in the first big home stand of the year starting april 14th good seats still available call 924 1000 for information or call socks masterpiece about the rivalry between two ghetto gangs and the love that emerges in spite of the bitterness natalie wood richard boehmer rita moreno and george chicaris star in part one of west side story tuesday night at seven right here on channel nine well the red sox will send up the bottom of the order there's a look at gary allen he'll be followed by rick miller and then the top of the order dwight evans allison struck out against brit burns his first time up [Applause] there's a beauty off-speed curveball dropped right over at the leaves [Music] never at any time last year did brit burns have the breaking stuff that he has today and the off-speed deliveries up and away a ball one on one allinson played more two years ago when carl and fisk had the arm problems allinson was forced fed into the red sox lineup last year he celibated chance to play behind a healthy fist but he did manage a 3-7 average a 357 average in 36 ball games with 10 runs batted in fastball strike two knee high outside corner one and two the count a couple of bosox pitchers steve crawford and mike torres on the left they'll be in the starting rotation we got a couple of spring looks at both torres had an impressive spring and crawford looks like an outstanding young pitching prospect foul back one and two the count rides for allenson so inside he missed it two and two the count karl yastremski 41 years of age missing his first opener in 21 years today with a bad back they'll work on him again tomorrow to hopefully get him ready for the second game here on sunday afternoon 2-2 pitch struck him out on a change-up curve and allison allenson waved at it he was so far out in front of that pitch he was on the wrong foot [Applause] another look that's seven strikeouts for brit burns and that matches his big league high we've got one down here in the fifth inning with that one strikeout ballgame against kansas city last year he might have gotten eight double check it slices one foul off to the third base side he's struck out against brett burns back in the third [Music] brit had 133 strikeouts last year tops on the sock staff but then of course he was tops in several categories innings pitched complete games victories with 15 and he had the third lowest earned run average as a rookie in the american league at 2.84 up and in that time one-on-one to count [Music] the one-on-one pitch on the way to rick miller the only left-handed hitter in the red sox lineup and he takes a call strike and he is unhappy with that call just a bit under the belt inside corner one ball two strikes burns has been masterfully moving the ball around at carlton fists beckon call he today with destiny a couple of times last year his rookie year had a couple of no hitters going into the middle late innings oh boy that looked good just a bit inside two and two the count he's won off his major league high he struck out eight royals on may 8th at kaminsky park and we're only in the fifth inning the 2-2 pitch on the way just a bit high full count 3-2 [Music] [Applause] he had two full counts in the first inning he walked rudy after he thought he had him struck out twice then he walked stapleton with two out in the third on four straight pitches tonight has a three-two count on rick miller here it comes the payoff pitch slice foul out of play still 3-2 the bulls will try to battle back against the celtics tonight in game three their second round nba playoff series the celtics won two straight at the boston gardens here meanwhile the cub city in a state of shock as far as the national hockey league playoffs are concerned the north stars who had not won a game at the boston guards in 14 years have taken the first two in their three out of five series one hopper hit right to the shortstop bill allman throws him out two down whit burns 21 years of age that makes his home in birmingham he was born in houston here's dewey evans [Applause] dewey has fouled out and lined to right [Music] well the a's scored in the top of the fourth at the met they now in a one-run lead 4-3 over the twins in the bottom of the fourth at baltimore the royals lead the orioles three to two larry gurra got the start in place of right-hander denny leonard who was initially enlisted to open the season for kansas city guru an 18-game winner a year ago against last year's cy young award winner 25-game winner steve stone outside with the off-speed breaking ball ball one there is a curveball strike one-on-one no matter what brit accomplishes from this point on this has been by far and away his most impressive outing the whole year he was not that impressive down in florida this spring ironically enough it was a great spring training a year ago the guy on the job there it [Music] goes [Music] red sox lead one to nothing it looked like he golfed the pitch and he hit it 50 feet over the screen well blight had a great spring he cranked out six down in florida and he hits the first home run of the year for the red sox they have a one to nothing lead here in the fifth handshakes all around and here's another look [Applause] he got that fast ball right over the plate felt high and yanked it out of [Applause] here that's evans ninth career home run against the white side and he has given his teammates a one-nothing lead here in the bottom of the fifth here's dave stapleton who is flied to right and walked he is over one only the third hit surrendered by brit burns and the first run is on the board fast ball at the knees for a call strength now one thing about it there was no drama to that one it was gone as soon as he hit it fouled away two strikes well brit burns has just allowed his first fenway park run he pitched six plus innings here last year and his only start against the red sox and left with a three hit shutout and mike prolly preserved it [Applause] outside a ball one and two the count not bad for a young left-hander to pitch over 11 shutout innings in this ballpark before giving up a run let's hope that's not the run that decides the game popped up bernazard going out waving everybody away still backpedaling and he takes it for the out and that retires aside but the red sox score they're half of the fifth on a two out homer to left by dwight evans the right fielder one run on one hit and after five innings at play on opening day the red sox won the white sax nothing [Music] good afternoon here are the top stories at this hour governor thompson has ordered a 200 million dollar budget cut for illinois in 1982 he wants to fight the effects of a long recession in the highest welfare rate in the state since the depression of the 30s the governor also ordered a freeze on equipment purchases general revenue fund projects and consultant hiring effective immediately the chicago city council today postponed action on a resolution urging the school board to reject its desegregation plan that plan has been loudly opposed and state legislators say money to pay the 26 million plan isn't likely to come from springfield a computer system breakdown stopped the columbia space shuttle launch set for this morning at cape canaveral the launch is being postponed now until sunday at its earliest and mount saint helens erupted steam and ash more than 15 000 feet today and experts think further mining eruptions are still likely chicago's weather showers this afternoon with a high in the 60s tonight rain again low in the 50s and tomorrow partly sunny highs in the 70s right now it's officially 64 degrees at o'hare field that's news more news today on channel 9. i'm mary d reporting true length the fence people add beauty privacy security to your home their 29th year for special savings call truly 463-7010 joe mcconnell here with you on channel nine as we get set for the top of the sixth the red sox on dewey evans home run and the bottom of the fifth have a one nothing lead there's a look at steve trout hopeful of getting a starting nod in game two at home against the milwaukee brewers but the way brit burns is pitching today just might get that start in the second game and then shot would be moved backward carl and fisk permits the mixed cheers and booze here at fenway park will stand in for his third at bat against his former teammate denny eckersley fisk has bounced to the mound and hit a pop fly single that the wind did tricks with so carlin is one for two so far here today takes a strike just under the letters inside corner all in one each club with three hits red sox have the only two errors a lot of people still left carl and fisk here is that probation before the ball game would indicate there's a pitch inside a ball one on one of course he was a native new englander made it even tougher for him to leave one nothing the red sox leading here in the top of the sixth and carlton lines one into the low seats down the third base side one ball two strikes soxa left five men on through the first five innings excellent chance to score in the first and second innings they had a two out threat in the third the only time eckersley put him down in order was in the fourth quite a few fans on top of a very tall billboard over the center field wall here getting a bird's eye view of the game ball two strike to the cap to fisk leading off the sox sixth inning he'll be followed by lucinski and lemon up high ball three strike two full count [Applause] [Applause] the cubs and the mets here tomorrow at one in our next sox telecast next friday night stand corrected one o'clock next friday afternoon game another look at fist striking out let's strike out number six for dennis eckersley cut that pitch down and in on him here's greg lucinski still looking for a piece of anything right now he's over two fan both times looked like carl and fisk was looking for a pitch away from him when heckersley came down and in ask for an appeal they don't get it checked his swing just in time one ball two strikes high pop-up the wind will keep this one in play lansford [Applause] now chad levitt has been hit by a pitch and is struck out so he's all for one funny thing about chet lemon he has never hammered against the red sox either at chicago or here at fenway not that he is a big home run hitter but he'll hit 10 to 15 every year blow all the way ball one chet's best year was in 79 when he hit 318 with 17 home runs and 86 runs batted in he's got a chance to drive in 100 this year with this lineup fouled away last year chet never really had much of a rush at all until the final month of the season when tony larussa put him in the number one slot and he hit it near 400 for the final five weeks of the season and that moved his average up outside the ball too out nobody on here in the top of the sixth inning accuracy working on a three-hit shutout right now the red sox leading on evan's fifth inning homer one to nothing fouls it away count rides at two and two two balls two strikes chet lemon slow bouncer lansford charging up and throwing and it retires aside three up three down for the white sox against denny eckersley in their half of the sixth we head to the bottom of winning number six here in boston the red sox won the white sox nothing you're watching wgn television nine chicago america's number one sports station the red sox in the bottom of the sixth inning will send up the heart of their order joe rudy jim rice and tony perez three long ball hitting right-handed hitters against left-hander brit burns as we give you a view of marvelous old fenway here on an absolutely perfect opening day weather-wise every seat is filled here joe rudy has walked and lying to left he's all for one brit burns he's only made one mistake so far today and that was to dewey evans in the previous inning and he put it out in the left field out over the netting and into the street for the only run of the ball game ball one to joe rudy right-hander rich dotson will pitch the finale here on sunday afternoon against left-hander frank tanana who was acquired along with about half of the angel ball club of the year ago by the red sox they had a regular shuttle system between here and anaheim over the winter just inside with an off-speed breaking ball ball two to joe rudy the shadow line now extends about seven or eight feet in front of home plate could make it kind of difficult for the batter to see the ball real well just as it gets up to the plate fastball strike two and one sox will fly back to the windy city sunday night a workout and press day at comiskey park on monday and then the big opener with the brewers tuesday afternoon few seats are left low of all three matter of fact the socks are hoping they get a break from the weather man they might break the club mark for opening day attendance tuesday lamar hoyt now beginning to throw in the sox bullpen brit burns has not pitched longer than six innings in any time this spring there's a look at carlton fisk see if he tries to pitch him down and away rudy lines at the center chet coming in makes the flip catch just right around the knees hit right at them fortunately could be that brick burns is beginning to tire one out here in the bottom of the sixth let's take another look at that knee-high two-handed catch by chet lemon the ball was drilled right at him jim rice is single to right and struck out one for two into the dirt [Music] rice hit only 205 against the sox last year he did hit two home runs against chicago pitching his career mark is a 303 average with 15 home runs fouls this one down and back right over near the white sox box near the sox third base dugout one ball and one strike on jim rice batting with one out nobody on there's a look at dewey lamar hoyt it was a real pleasant surprise amidst all the adversity a year ago came up mid-season had a nine and three record inside with a fastball two and one now a race point came up as a reliever wound up in the starting rotation pitch to shut out and won nine out of the 12 decisions he was involved in so far early this year he at least is in the pen slow curve in there for a beauty two and two to count earl weaver's orioles have bounced back into a 4-3 lead they're in the fifth at baltimore and billy martin's a's have taken a 5-3 lead over the twins in the fifth up at the net 2-2 pitch popped him up wind might push this one out of play tough play for squires looking up into that high sky and he's got it so rice is retired on a foul pop and that'll bring up perez who is struck out and doubled in two tries hi tony perez it'd be 39 years next month on the 8th of may 1462 rbis in 16 big league seasons for this guy strike beauty last time up he got a pitch he liked and rammed it in the slot to left center for a double one of the three hits surrendered by brit burns that time brit turned it over and it tailed outside for a ball one-on-one red sox have won nine of their previous 12 openers while the sox have lost two in a row and seven of the last nine in fact the last time the sox won an opening day game was against this red sox ball club in 78 change up breaking ball down and in ball two strike one [Music] that'll be a hit so perez who hit 439 against sax pitching last year [Applause] before comes up with two hits in his first three at bats against us this year that believe it or not is the first ground ball hit of the game we've had wind blown pop flies drop into fair territory for hits a couple of line drives couple of bloops and a tremendous home run but that's the first ground ball single of the year here's lansford he is fly to center and struck out kearney oh for two with two out perez on it first popped him up right off the fist squire's backpedaling might be a tough play bernazard will take it and that retires the red sox in the sixth inning no runs one hit one left perry and jimmy will be back for the seventh after six complete here at fenway park on opening day 81 the red sox won our white sacks nothing [Music] what's your lucky number 4-1-1 got a hunch double-oh-seven got a hunch play the daily game harry carey and jimmy pearson back at fenway park where the white sox are trailing one to nothing in a magnificently pitch ball game the difference is one mistake which dwight evans turned into a home run and that's the ball game one to nothing the white sox needs some runs in other games baltimore leads kansas city 4-3 at the end of five oakland over minnesota five to three at the end of five tony armis has hit another home run his second in two days harry if we can get the ball in the air to right field i noticed dwight evans is putting his glove up it is awful tough to pick up the ball if you hit any ball off the end of the bat or in the fist you'll have trouble catching it and the wind is blowing out there too pretty good we haven't hit the ball anywhere near that floor yet well here's the guy that can do it right this guy can do it harold baines he's the one guy in this lineup here against eckersley that might have the percentage on him being a left-hand hitter takes a strike boy he challenged him then he threw a fast ball right down the pipe maine's got a blue pit in the second foul out the other time stanley warming up with burke meyer in a bullpen for the red sox high pop file back out of play harold had a good cut boy a pitch up where he liked it too he is really shaking his head remember seats are still available for the opener next tuesday afternoon and even more and better seats for wednesday afternoon and friday saturday and sunday when these red sox will be in town and the following monday tuesday and wednesday nights which mark our first night games of the year against the baltimore orioles earl weaver and company pulled at foul well we haven't had a ball hit hard all day harry you know their bullpen is tough they've got bob clear down there along with stanley and i see what they traded drago off to seattle but they have a good bullpen that is probably the best part of their ball club right now i don't care how good their bullpen is let's bring one of them in we're not doing anything with this guy swings and he fouls it out of play he knows is going the other way he did that in spring training and hit a home run about 400 feet over the left field fence so he can hit it out of here left hand here waiting now the pitch on the way smash right to the second baseman that's the first ball that's been hit halfway hard one out here's jim mars nothing out of two for a lot of shadows around the mound right now makes it tough for that hitter morrison trying to bunt with runners at first and second and nobody out in the second popped up then rolled out of the fourth eckersley who had an off year last season swings and he missing our hitters are really swinging in his motion especially the right-handers at the end of seven oakland still leads five to three at minnesota billy martin got him going again there's a little swivel roller to hoffman he fires in time i've always hit so softly morrison almost beat it out yeah hoffman to me never seems to feel the ball harry surely but he's got a good arm got a great hose yeah that offsets a lot of mistakes sometimes two men are out and we're going to have tony bernard's eye and i would imagine that if he got on we might have a pinch hitter they have a lot of fun out there in the centerfield bleachers with the frisbees harry look at the way the wind's blowing we saw bernie's art hit a couple of balls deep in right center field he might be able to hit one out if you can get it up in the air two men are gone you know the pitcher like eckersley can't figure him to hit the ball that far we haven't had one one put out in the outfield yet the boston outfield could have just as well stayed home nobody's hit one that far eckersley has been masterful so has brett burns outside took a little off that didn't he he got it up high too good motion though but burners are looking for a fastball all the way because he wants to tie this game up if he can hit nine home runs in winner ball atkersley steps off the mound a frisbee a ball is out on the field down there in the right field caught it one of those there's a new fad at the ball park now beach balls and frisbees two men are out well you can't beat fun of you i'm not knocking it harry i don't care what they play with just get in the park slider in there a strike call [Applause] two balls two strikes hey let's start something with two outs let's go bill allman waiting on deck high pop foul back out of play he had the right idea he was pulling on that one he had a good pitch to hit it was on the inside part of plate and up tony bernard 24 year old infielder ackersley you know they make you uh they won't allow you with a cut sleeve sweatshirt sleeve that'll make that guy get a haircut i think he hides the ball behind his hair how about putting your hand on your hair and coming up with a little wet grease outside that could be too watch him go to his hair he does go to his hair an awful lot you know he tries to get his hair out of his eyes two balls two strikes the pitch fouled out of play well we are not getting good swings at all you can tell because you can't even hear the sound of bat against ball sounds like we're hitting with a a lot of wet sporting news how about a banana stuck two balls two strikes oh fine you can hear that one boy who got a lady in the two balls two strikes two out nobody on top of the seven one to nothing boston you know every seat in this ballpark harry is a good seat you're right close to the field step cam out strike on number seven swinging one two three nothing across we go to the bottom of the seventh boston one white sox nothing [Music] it's time to get up for school there's a test today i don't want to go to school today harry carey back at fenway park a fan scales the backstop screen to get a ball which had been lodged in the wiring and in coming down he fell on his back but he got himself up and he waves the ball he could have broken his back but he got himself a 2.75 baseball big deal you're up to 375 now that's inflation coach hold him right there burnsie i got a feeling we're going to steal a couple glenn hoffman will lead it off here in the bottom of the seventh boy what a frustrating day for the white sox leflore was on second base with nobody out in the first inning nothing happened 35 124 paid the red sox failed by about 200 of setting a new attendance record the record is 35 three today thirty five thousand one hundred and twenty four pages look at the crowd a small ballpark the pitch swung any miss may have fouled tip two strikes prettiest ballpark in the american league baltimore now leads kansas city five to three the end of six there you go good looking brit burns boy we can hold him here in the seventh we'll have probably a pinch hitter for almond in the eighth the floor and then squires if anybody gets on fisk not over yet stuck him out strikeout number eight for brett burns he struck this kid out white twice he got rice once perez once lansford once hoffman twice allinson twice miller wants i think if a pitcher pitch a good ballgame like this you get a half a win [Applause] here's gary allen the catcher he's fanned twice but burns ready high fly right failed dave brain's way back might be out of [Applause] who didn't have a home run at all the last year i told you harry that ball is blowing again to right which is very unusual at fenway park and it is blowing out there about oh 10 miles an hour and carrying good he really hit that ball though he didn't hit a fluke i think he hit it as good as you can hit it here you'll see it right now let's see where the pitch is [Applause] low outside you see right here it gets in by plenty it was high enough to be carrying so another home round it's two to nothing here's rick miller now he pops a bun in the air nobody can reach it the foul strike gary goes to show you if you keep swinging you might hit it somewhere and allison is struck out twice there's ralph hoff the manager of the red sox [Applause] dave stapleton behind him getting a helmet rick miller's over two allinson who had fanned his first time first two times up in a low fastball over the right field barrier that's why i like to see bernie's art get one of those balls in here miller getting something out of his eye rick miller this is his second go around with the red sox he started with him originally they traded him to california now he's back with him brett burns probably wondering what in the world you have to do to win burns knows how ross baumgarten felt most of last year he'd go on holy opposition to no runs or won and his teammates would have failed to score it all [Applause] left hand hitter waiting rick miller there's lamar height in the bullpen line foul into the stands [Applause] lamar hoyt warming up had a great year early in the bullpen first last year he came up and won five and lost none then they had to put him in the starting rotation and he won nine and lost three there's tony larussa white sox manager [Applause] two balls two strikes on rick miller hey foul tipton good curveball remains the same the red sox have played long ball today dwight evans in the fifth gary allenson and the [Applause] seventh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] three chances handle the ball cleanly here is dwight evans getting a hand [Applause] i think they're saying dwight or [Applause] something boy harry he had a home run that would have gone on any ballpark in america far over the left field screen [Music] you know the last home run that gary allen center hit was in 1979 against a white sox against ross baumgardt so he's gone two years since he you know home run got a big one here today goes to show you you're dangerous as long as you swing the bat and he fanned his first two times he probably wouldn't have a home run yet at the fiscal still with boston a ball and a strike to heaven fastball low two to nothing five hits for the red sox two of the homers off day tomorrow lagoon against sunday radio only our next telecast will be friday against the red sox and kaminsky park in the meantime we'll play here against boston sunday the broadcast on wbbm likewise at home tuesday afternoon and wednesday afternoon no television radio only then friday and saturday the red sox will be on channel nine three one one carry up it's breaking ball he had a fastball for a homer and britt burns apparently not getting the call he wants [Music] the bench is on the way that's only the second pass here comes out good burns his pitch six and two thirds inning dave stapleton will be the banner a runner at first two out you know harry they're short on a lead off man of course evans has always hit down the line because he can hit home runs and driving runs but so far today hitting a home run and walking is a good job well i like that lead off man who can hit home runs bobby barnes did that uh eddie yost used to hit home runs the lead lead 110 times nice to get on the board in a hurry larussa trots off the field the one thing harry we're facing probably he's got a picture in the american league when he's right at eckersley i don't know whether he's that right or weird that not hitting that much today but he has certainly been an outstanding picture there's bobby winkles this game isn't over yet he's liable to make one of those mistakes if we get a man or two on we ran our way out of a couple of situations big lead by evans over there evan seems to be one of those happy about the the change of style of the red sox where he becomes a star now nobody knew it before he was a great player but nobody really knew him big lead curveball going outside evans had three stolen bases last year most ever swiped in the season was eight burns is throwing a lot of pitches and right now he may be just losing a little as curveball is flat [Music] evan's a lead the pitch a little pop fly may drop in the right field [Applause] drops the ball picks it up fired towards third too late say what they're going to call it he had it in both hands and he had it about there on he had the ball about at his belt he got a good jump watch his balls hit off the end of the bat but that son is tough out there here he comes he gets a good jump on it now watch he cups his hand but hits on the heel of his glove he didn't watch the ball go into his glove and he lost it no chance to get the guy at third [Applause] that's going to be all for brit burns now because the right hand hitter is coming up joe rudy they're going to bring in lamar hoydice i suppose here there's got to be a change because that's the second trip to the mound this inning and there goes brit burns out he leaves because his right fielder dropped the fly ball he struck out eight in six and two thirds inning lamar height [Applause] to be the new pitcher he allowed two runs while he was in there both homers they have runners at first and third with two out and lamar hoyt comes on lamar hoyt 25 years old from columbia south carolina came up in the middle of the season last year after he was five and two at iowa went into the bullpen and won five and lost none and then he got in starting his simon he finished up with nine and three but in the bullpen he had a good era of about 2.50 he is replacing proley in the bullpen who was traded so he comes on and the young man has got good stuff from the side last year against the red sox he was awfully tough he won one and lost none in this afternoon's ballgame it just seemed like we started out in a way where you got to believe we're going to get things to happen lafleur got a base hit the right and then overthrow by the pitcher trying to pick him off he went to second base and with nobody out squires hit a ground ball back to the pitcher fisk hit a two-strike pitch back to the pitcher and then lazinski struck out so we didn't score then lemon got hit with a pitch baines got a base hit to right field morrison popped up an attempted bunt and that really hurt then barnazar got on the fielder's choice and then allman struck out so we just didn't take advantage early and it might have been a different ballgame right there and now lamar hoyt is going to come on the chicago white sox dress your own team uniform contest has officially begun it was in the plans were announced by laureen fadil director of television radio and special events for the white sox now here are some of the rules for the designers sketches must be submitted by may the 7th your sketch should include home jerseys home trousers road jerseys road trousers home and road jackets socks home and road helmets and caps the home uniform should have a majority of white as background with color for emphasis there will be no logo chains the white sox logo that you see now will remain colors are flexible for road uniforms but should look smashing on television i'll tell you more about it later on joe rudy the hitter he's hit the ball hard all day he walked his first time lamar hoyt and a relief for all runners at first and third two out rid burns tied his career high for strikeouts in one game eight today in six and two thirds inning joe rudy you better have good stuff whether you're right-handed left-handed or cross-handed this guy's a good hitter i like his chances though with that sidearm stuff he throws the pitch high inside if you look at lamar hoyt he is just as strong as an ox he really knows what to do with that sidearm fastball he keeps it down he has trouble with left-handed batters joe rudy digs in lamar height a 9-3 record last year outside ball two you know rudy will be ready here jim rice on deck and he can hit over that right field fence too carol baines playing him far over in right center stapled and safe on baines's error is at first evans at third good fast balls right surprised to see joe take that he must have been full the ball was on the inside corner oakland continues to add runs they lead to minnesota six to three at the end of seven runners first and third two out [Applause] big fetch ball three jim rice waiting on deck come back and get him boy doug mcgraw came in with the bases loaded the other day and walked in the winning run red sox out in front two to nothing bottom of the seventh joe rudy the pitch foul tip the back had a good cut the runner on first will be going with the pitch [Applause] hope you're enjoying the telecast wherever you're getting it and you could be getting it in any one of 46 different states high 46 different states on superstation nine i just want to say hello to all harry's to you know nine in uh sarasota is 24. oh i get it on 24. i want to say hello to all your taverns around the country some get six together on 16. three two pitch hit it hay struck him out and fist tags him out so height did the job one run one hit one error two left at the end of seven busted two white sox nothing hi i'm chet lemon of the chicago white sox my teammates and i are determined more than ever to bring an american league pennant to the great baseball fans of chicago join the white whiteside the commission the 1981 white sox one team that won't let you down the socks take on the brewers red sox and orioles and the first big home stand of the year starting april 14th for information call socks 225-5769 24-hour service the 1981 white sox your kind of team yeah i couldn't have done it any better harry carrie and jimmy pearson time is running out a great battle but boston by virtue of the long ball leads two to molinero will pitch it for allman molinero hit around 290 last year and had a pretty good year pitch hitting playing when they needed him and guys that are hurt he had a good spring too hit over 350. last year against the red sox hit 400 by the way that's not too bad by the way you know what you know this is the kind of a picture you realize your ball club gives up a lot of percentage if you don't have left-hand hitters you know why casey stengel won pennants because he played that play too and you know why billy martin will win penance because he will play them but [Music] there now is bobby monero but you got so many guys today first pitch outside who tell the manager if they don't play every day i won't hit and i can't go that way instead of just doing what you think is best now the delivery fastball outside they used to be mad at casey stingle but it didn't keep him from doing it his way and winning woodley and bauer used to get so mad they couldn't stand it but they always went out and hit played good because he made them stars by the way he used them he had a cut anymore two balls of the strike but they had a lot of you know switch hitters too bobby molinero leading it off all three molly trying to get the job done now he's really got him in a hole this guy's only walked one man and he hit one how about that record harry his whole career he's only walked over 300. he walked in that a way to begin plenty of activity in the bullpen now for the red sox is burgmeyer and he's the only one up is the left-hander i guess stanley's been throwing and so is clear here's round the floor now he's been on base twice stole base had a hit comes up with a runner at first he's good at hitting the ball to the opposite field he'll have a big hole over there you're absolutely right what an advantage for a guy like lafleur the second baseman who's a little bit leery they're not playing too good he's going to achieve so he can get there then you've got perez at first who doesn't move too well so he doesn't have to hit the ball too hard to get it through round left floor straddling the play now dennis eckersley goes to the grass so that he can go to his mouth we're in the eighth who almost threw it away ball one low and outside for the little guy behind the plate is awfully quick tom burgmaier the left-hander bob stanley the right-hander on the bullpen stanley was just standing there because he's been throwing off and on for about four innings there's the major ralph hauck the manager of the red sox strike over the inside corner accuracy accuracy is no dummy he knows that the floor might go that way on him and so he pitches him inside barrios surprised to see him up throwing a ball and a strike my drive basically they don't stay there here's a runaround second holding up throwback behind him leflower comes through well here comes ralph hauck out of the dugout right now i know fleur really hit that ball pretty there's a ball that was down and away and he didn't try to pull it and that's going to be all and they're going to bring in stanley eckersley's going to get a great hand from the crowd the tying runs are on base nobody out we have squires fisk lozinski coming up bob stanley the right-hander is going to relieve and he's trying to get out of the bullpen i like to see any player do that instead listen to the hand for accuracy standing ovation i'm glad to see him go harry did eckersley have seven strikeouts stanley who has been awfully tough as a reliever against the white sox we have knocked him out several times as a starter last year he won 10 and lost eight with an era of 3.39 he pitched 175 innings he's six feet four 205 pounds he is 26 years old from portland maine and he throws hard sinkers he'll throw mostly sliders but his forte is sinkers all right i know that you and i are gonna have an argument right here don't hit me though i mean i've had a tough year already i like i tell you what i think okay the wind is blowing out towards right field you're on the road you've got a left-hand batter up there who has hit a home run in this ballpark got so much trouble bunning and sacrificing situation and even then on the road you'd be playing for a tie i wouldn't quarrel at all if he lets my squires swing away well i can reason with you harry but i would squires is a good bunner but there's never been an rbi man for us in this situation you got to hope with that short left field fence that you can get a right hander up maybe hit it over a fence you got fist coming up next he is a good butter in fact he even beat out a ball the other day with mine on first and second he bunted down the third base line so uh i got to go along with the butt you're not wrong if you want to go that way no i really mean it you can go either way but i like to go with the butt because well that's close i just wanted to uh throw out before anything happened we have no idea what the tony larus is going to do but i i just want to preface it because i think either way he goes here i don't think you can quarrel with it see i know the signs area oh it's a good one the runners will advance he tags a man coming down the line for the sacrifice harry a very dangerous tag he didn't have that ball in his glove securely and he might have knocked it out that was a bad tank because all he had to do was flip it to first but he was hoping to make a play at third maybe i don't think they'll walk fist to you how about a home run right here oh no that would be the winning that would be the winning run they got a pitch to him that's right i want a home run harry so here's carlton fence you think he isn't thinking home bagger i think he's thinking base hit to tie it up bob stanley a tough right-hander i hope that's what maybe he's wishing over no i hope that's what he's thinking jimmy based on sure i know because that's when you hit home runs when you're just trying to hit the ball when you're trying for a home run you usually pop it up i never walked up to the plate thinking home run making contact with my motto well you only finished 635 behind babe ruth 635 he didn't hit that many homeboys 714. what did you have 130 no i hit 125 and i know where every one i hit i hit one down the line my first one in the big leagues underneath the foul pole here how come the only one you ever got there's a marker when you ran backwards yeah is that silly yeah and i hit one over that 380 sign hit one of the argument here tony roose is out talking to uh marty springster i wish they put it on his lips so i could tell tony's taking this on the court i don't know what he's talking about come on tony don't give him all that extra you know what happens right now you get the hitter all nerved up you know there we go bob clear a right-hander and tom burghermeier the left-hander in the bullpen for the red sox a base hit would tie it up well home run would put the white sox ahead they're going to give us a run on the ground ball except probably the third field's playing back carlton fist facing bob stanley hey back please holy cow carlton fest has put the white sox ahead a line drive i was afraid it might not gonna hide it out and the white sox lead look at fish look at fest oh said that's what we bought him for whoa eric he's a tough load look at that sign get it right away it's straight it's trace sullivan fouls a pitch back boy he had a low pitch oh just barely made it a line drive how's that sport fans three to two white sox oh i love it there's a strike off [Applause] boy i'm gonna have another heart trouble two strikes on nothing curve load away greg lozinski he's due to make contact here he hasn't uh distinguished himself yet struck out twice and fouled out this guy is easy compared to eckersley did he miss it yeah he's running to first base on a strikeout and he is out on a close play allison made a perfect throw and got him boy has just had a tough day struck out three times and fouled out ah he'll get his another day see harry didn't you like that sacrifice punt 24. you know he might hit him with a double play you know you know first base open but you can't walk the winning run and bring up uh a hitter like losing even though it turns out he's struck out here now is chet limit low outside boy fist kit stan lee's first pitch you know harry i got to get farmer in here right now he hasn't even been up he's been up warming up even i gotta have him in here because he's our bread and butter man not that quite can't pitch but i'd have him up ready in case he gets a man on base or something a three-run homer by carlton fisk lemon had a cut in this we still got to hold him in the eighth and ninth though see harry when you do the fundamentals you get runs and i'll tell you what i'll bet you i'll bet you anything that carlton fists will tell you that all he was trying to do is hit a line drive no but i said he was thinking over it oh sure because that was a line drive and the only i only feared that might hit the top of the wall it barely made the edge on the pre-game show i said to hit a home run oh boy that's the second time he's been hit you could hear the ball hit the bat after it hit lemon on the hand he got hit he gets hit so much you know he's the kind of a guy that digs in and doesn't get out of there when you're dug in it's hard to get away and right now well they pitch him inside all the time too russo's saying something to him about babies throwing at him and he's hot russo is mad about it because he wants him worn and that ball was way inside of it i don't think he was strong now let's don't wake the opposition up he was hit by a pitch ball let's let it go let's see the pitch it looks like it's way out smart not too high see it's not high harry it's around his shoulders there and you know he stays in there so close he doesn't get out of the way it's a tough play everybody pitches lemon that way they all try to jam him i don't think he was throwing at him i got to believe that he just doesn't get out of the way how would you like to be at christine at least when burns went out of the game he was trailing two to nothing when accuracy left the game he was leading two to nothing and all he could wind up with is no decision no matter what how this game comes out he will be charged with two runs the run that put him ahead is charged to stanley here's baines now i can't get over how that ball climbed here i don't know how it ever got up in the screen come on harold get hold of when he fouled it off the wind blowing right for baines oh to have a little cushion here going into the eighth and ninth we have had a tremendous ball game for the first one one this year and thanks to carlton fesk the whole baseball city of chicago has scored the cubs were shut out two to nothing yesterday and we had been shut out for seven innings there goes the runner swung and missed the peg shape hoffman couldn't hold the throw well i want to tell you that was a good throw harry on a good jump by lemon he had him but for some reason that short stop is really unsure with that glove watch him watch his throw now he gets away in a hurry too now watch it it's right there he's out of bed yeah he don't hold on to it see he has got a very soft glove where that ball doesn't stain your heart glove i guess it doesn't stay in there all right here baines now can drive in a run two strikes or nothing the pitch foul tipped stanley's still ahead of him two i think lemons got two got hit by pitch twice he ought to get some extra money for all that time gets a lot of tape i know he leads the league of being hit by pitch balls already maybe they'll get him on that baseball this week [Music] that's a good sinker curveball breaking ball all right it's two strikes and a ball come on benzy harry i think he should go for a single i think if he gets the ball in the air towards right field he's going to settle for circling the bases three to two white side it's 420 to deep right center field and 380 along the bullpens out there and 390 beyond the bullpen and then 315 down the line in right field or 290 something like that here now is a signal [Applause] only two hits no errors charge one left we go to the bottom of the eighth white sox three the bad guys two harry carey back at fenway park where for the first time today the good guys are out in front it's three to two jim rice will lead it off greg pryor now playing shot stop rusty koontz has taken over in center field i want to thank ralph hauck for bringing in that picture here's jim rice lamar height now with a chance to pick up a victory he needs six outs [Applause] swings did he miss it boy tough seeing up at the plate it is twilight here in boston in this ballpark the stands are preventing the sun now from shining in the infield those of you have been watching the game and saw the home run by fisk here's a curved strike two call boy maybe some of your loved ones have been away at work warren didn't have a chance either here to see it be sure to tell him about it and tell him to state it on channel nine he stuck him out swinging on a breaking ball fight his fan two men boy he threw a hard slider for the second strike and this time he took a little bit off a breaking ball here you'll see it now it's a bad pitch watch where the target is now watch it go outside and he's swung at us about a foot outside now ed farmer is up along with kevin hickey the left-hander the chicago boy bill campbell's in the bullpen for boston a lot of activity on the bullpen harry what a great view we have right here that's why we're able to see so much we're right behind home plate and almost on top of it the white sox pictures of fan 10 red sox burns got eight victims and hoyt has had two they have fanned nine necklace we got seven stanley two there's a curve in there dude perez strike car watch fists now he wants him to keep that ball down on the outside part of the plate to perez if he hits it good he may not get it up in the air [Music] now the signal the one thing he doesn't want to do is hang on hold everything fans strike two good slider outside corner perez didn't believe it he looked over to see what was going on now he's got to keep that breaking ball outside to this guy because he's on top of the plate here's the pitch on the way outside breaking ball now he sets him up for this sidearm slider let's see if he can keep it down two strikes on the ball look at the sign let's see what the sign is one one flap gotta be breaking ball breaking scott come out swinging look like a slander to me which is a breaking ball he throws a good curve too yeah he does and what he does on the slider harry he comes side with it but he throws it hard when he throws his curveball he'll come side but he'll just take a lot off of it but he wants to keep it outside it's a bad pitch if he gets it inside before those are two big outs in this ballpark lanes he may not have to face those guys again if he can get this guy out his ninth inning won't be too tough right hand hit her waiting curveball missed outside all outfielders are playing real deep want to keep the ball from going in the hole if you can keep them on first base white sox leading three to two that evens a count a makes it two-and-oh rather two balls no strikes point the first two hitters he got right ahead in a hurry this is the first guy he's been behind carney lansford he might fear this guy maybe he doesn't have his good success against what that up we're out of this inning or should be bernazardo's second base don't worry about the kid from puerto rico don't worry did you see that ice cream cone out there don't worry at the end of eight carlton fisk three his farmer teammates too [Music] my [Music] harry carey back at fenway park we're going to the top of the ninth white sox leading three to two in a thrilling ball game hope you're enjoying it friends wherever you are morrison can't even dump now two balls of the strike on jim arson we need to get another run harry they've got some pretty good pinch hitters they can put up their hancock hoffman gaz can't swing so we're lucky there he's got a bad back and paquette two balls and a strike swings any foul tips bob stanley came in in time to throw a home run ball there's carlton fisk [Music] all three i imagine when they start putting those left-handed pinch hitters up hickey might be up in the bullpen he's the only left-hander we got down and he had a great spring 24 year old rookie out of kelly high school chicago and a goody kid run you might beat them here's the peg save he had to get away from the bat harry he had to run away from the bat courtney lansford didn't show me anything okay they just let the bat hit him in the teeth pick the ball up and throw him off he really started back now watch this bat is broken right in his hand and the barrel to the bat now watch where it goes look at it look at this now here goes the barrel of the bat lansford can't get away from it and now he comes up a little bit yeah look he got the handle in his hand now watch this run don't look oh you can't see it now watch he has to throw it when he does he takes the the first baseman off the bag there's the bun by bernie but one strike or nothing this is wgn television nine chicago america's number one sports station how about a hit and run right here harry there you go look if you know the entertainer bobby shark doesn't he look exactly like him i don't know about him bobby chardwell he's one of the outstanding pianos i know that he i know one thing about this young man he is put together he's strong and he can hit balls out of the ballpark he's a strong switch at carlisle hotel in the argo here bobby short he's out of decatur illinois and of course he's one of the a world renowned pianist and singer i hope he's listening we get a run for him i don't know if they give us in new york listen 46 states harry is new york's estate there it is into the corner a run around second racing for third bernazzar to hold it first the white sides with runners at first and third and nobody out holy cow boy like i've always told you jimmy the big possums walk late okay now they didn't have the runner going on this but watch how he hits this pitch this little guy ripped it but great feeling here by evans now keeps the runner from going to second he's played out there many years morrison's going to third but he holds up at first very wisely look at that arm there's greg pryor now who replaced bill holman at shortstop harry this is exciting white sox baseball on wgn well we've been doing the white sox are your kind of team there's a runner out first the throw through off the second baseman's legs a run will score tony bernazard had stopped because he knew he'd be a dead out to enable the runner at third possibly to score but morrison had not broken right away here's the play they had worked they did it in spring training the guy on first base deliberately stops they throw through but he's supposed to go as soon as they throw but for some reason morrison didn't go now watch this it's a bad throw right here it bounces away they follow this play up now the red sox will look terrible all day and continue to look terrible the air will go to hamlinson on the throw well that's a big run now a bunt right here oh my god get out of the front and bunt that ball he was running for a hit i don't want to hit right here i want to get the runner over but the genelec is getting a running start as he abundant the way he runs he'd have to get a taxi he's getting at least a bicycle get out there and put the ball he i don't think he really wants to butt pryor for some reason harry does not like the bunny he's a good bunner see what he looks like what do you think billy martin would do about that he would play algono pryor can do anything he wants with that bat that is a good bomb that a way to lay it down that's it and he's out at first with two strikes he bunted had he abundant foul he'd been out but he bunted perfectly and he accomplishes his job what happened harry on that play now he gets a breaking ball which is the easiest ball in baseball a bunt and he put it on the end of the bat he didn't see they didn't expect it so he could put it anywhere which he did there's around the floor a big star in this game how about a squeeze how about a squeeze runner at third base one out four to two white sox lefloro dumped one over that infield the pitch there's a man scoring it was a foul tip it ticked his back oh we could use this run boy with that infield in there right on top of us on both sides of that infield and lefleur wits the ball sharply to right can get himself a base hit right now the way their infield playing they'll have to kick it from here to the outfield leflar contributed a big base hitting that 8th inning they say they replaced burleson and they replaced nobody the pitch low a ball and a strike one out runner third harry lefleur has a good eye because he doesn't try to hit that ball higher does he he looks it over and he just tries to wrist balls he doesn't swing with his body breaking ball in the first strike call he was looking for something he took that one oakland wanted second in a row beating minnesota six to three bouncing ball a diving stop by lansford but the run will scare oh they call him out on a close play does he hustle down that line will he gets in shape he's not quite in the shape he'd like to be in but what a play by lansford but because he fell on the ground he couldn't get up and slow the runner out a fast runner watch it now watch his play at first base it looked to me like leflore beating it he dives and he can't come up quick enough to throw the runner out let's see the play at first like harry said woo close you know he stretched far enough just to get him didn't he yeah there's squires now boy oh boy five to two in favor of the white side oh my that's great three in the eighth and two in the ninth the big possums walk late and miss boston just walking by in a red yellow sweater there's not many missed boston's in this town well maybe that's miss greater boston she's about 11 and a half this time makes you want to move oh yeah high pop fly center field should be an easy out rick miller has it that's a first put out in the outfield for the red side [Applause] two runs scored two hits one air and nobody left we going to the bottom of the ninth the good guys five the red sox two mobile showcase network presents agatha christie's the seven dials mystery starring cheryl campbell and sir john gilgard do you want comfort i want excitement in my experience people who go around looking for trouble usually find it she was an amateur sleuth in the professional world of crime don't miss mobile showcase networks the seven dials mystery hosted by peter houston harry kerry and jimmy pearsall were in the bottom of the ninth with the white sox who are absolutely handcuffed for seven innings by dennis eckersley bouncing back with three in the eighth and two in the ninth to take over a five to two lead gary hancock is going to bat here now hancock was at pawtucket last year 241 and then came to boston and hit 287 with 46 and 46 games with four home runs wearing a good number harry number 37 on your scorecard number one in your heart the number that jimmy pierce saw made famous you know harry they never retired that number they just buried it one ball no strikes gary hancock a good left-hand hitter all two three runs in fenway park don't mean anything harry you've got to get the runners out kevin hickey's out in the bullpen along with ed farmer get a straight kid ready strike right in there this guy has good power he homered against us in spring training a tape measure job [Applause] come on don't walk him he's all three he's fallen down harry he's not throwing over the top that he's left-handers and he has a whale of a bit of trouble with him he just can't seem to get him out get this guy come back and get him he's taken now the count is full of three and two he's throwing both strikes just below the leathers he's got to get that ball down a little bit full count of three and two gary hancock terry i'm so excited you think i own the club hancock from tampa florida now makes his home in brandon squires is guarding the line playing deep knock that ball down white is going to have to get over there in a hurry because this guy can run too that's good power too 3-2 pitch walked him ball four oh cardinal [Applause] good farmer in here the red sox with three errors bernie's art didn't talk to hoyt probably right now they want to know who's going to cover second base in case the ball is hit back to him a good idea you got to make sure it won breyer at tron stomp this is a good double play man for hoyt right here i don't care if he hit two home runs today he struck out his first two times against brit byrne and then homer the next time now he's up there with a runner at first you know experience in this situation is what you got to have in there and farmer has done it so often so many times for us in the last three years i gotta go with my percentage get him out of there well if he gets this guy on the tying run will be at the plate and at fenway park anybody can hit one out well with an easy bottom part of the batting order and we're struggling fisk i don't know what he's talking to but i gotta say it looked to me like the last two pitches he aimed the ball harry he didn't throw it there were breaking balls that just were flat i'd rather see this guy hit a home run and walk five to two white sides he's taken right here runner at first nobody out [Applause] [Music] strike call two balls and a strike gary allen looking at the third base coach nice to have a guy like fish the pitching coach doesn't have to go out to tell him he knows what he's doing wrong he can go out and tell him two balls on a strike double play strike two boy that's a big pitch we needed that one boy he's throwing the ball hard fists told him something baltimore knocked off kansas city five to three oakland over minnesota six to three in other games today two-two pitch got him out swinging out tell you one thing it's a fourth strikeout for height and the third strikeout for allison today despite the fact he hit a home run so the white sox pitchers have struck out 12 boston batters the outfield in this situation harry can still play regular they don't have to worry about playing deep to keep the tyrant off at second base it's the next hitter miller who is a punch hitter you don't want a plane deep he hits a lot of balls shallow left center [Applause] [Music] is not holding the run around he comes up behind him and then he runs back plays deep he wants to knock that ball down if he can white sox have a three-run lead here in the ninth one away my bypass isn't working here now time is called somebody threw a rubber ball on the field no it looked like a tomato this is the way the red sox are playing like rotten tomatoes today one strike to nothing don't make him mad i ain't making anybody mad harry that's just the way they're playing already a little bit high that evens a count a ball on a strike that's a key man up there come on young man just throw the ball hard this guy is not that good a hitter he gets a base hit okay but try to keep it down shaking his head now but he's upset with himself rick miller took his eyes off the ball he realized it was too slow to get a force out he was going to throw to first base and he dropped it harry what he did watch this ball ball tie barnazar watch him look at the runner coming down now harry watch this here comes the ball he watched the runner at first base see he didn't get control of the ball and by making sure the ball was in his glove first and then look he'd had it but he has trouble you know a lot of balls he catches look like an ice cream cone and here's the guy who started the scoring of this game with a home run of brett burns in the fifth boy there's five errors in this ball game two by chicago and three by boston looked like we didn't have any spring training that's opening day jitters [Applause] here's evans down you got to be careful here [Applause] curve strike on the outside corner rusty coons in straight away center and baines has got to be awful careful he's got great power to right center field and he hits it a mile a pitch on the way boy do you think he was swinging forward or not but he wouldn't hit that pitch harry if he stayed there all night that's a slow curveball it exploded but you can see him twisting his body trying to pull with that green wall stroke he doesn't have to hit it too hard either because it goes up there easy let's see if he pitches him outside a bad pitcher weighs making him swing at a bad pitch [Applause] high pop foul might be playable it is squires under the ball makes you know here comes a pretty good hitter up here you've got to be awful careful of this young man he had 321 for the red sox almost got the rookie to ear never a dull moment like i say the white sox the 1981 white sox believe you me your kind of team eddie einhardt was always a fan now he's an owner boy and it gets a little bit hairy you think he's not a fan because he's an owner his hair is getting gray already i like to cut i like to give his blood pressure right now now play deep everybody dave stapleton from care of a beauty boy he's tough on right-handers he's not quite as tough as eckersley but he's tough one strike to nothing he has fanned four men and two in the third innings of relief well they can tag any bag in the infield right now on this ball he's way ahead of him two strikes or nothing now go get him don't fool around i like bad pitches with two strikes this kid's nervous he's had a bad day in the field the whole club has looked terrible he may swing at a bad ball boy what a what an influence that fisk is he does every pitch he's walking out yelling something and of course he got the the big blow today that's worth seven hundred thousand dollars he ought to renegotiate renegotiate his contract oh i didn't say that ed two strikes for nothing didn't give us one all day springstead new homer two strikes and a ball five to two white sox boy your hair has gotten grayer today harry hey there's a look at look at larussa is he missing a finger i think he chewed one off [Applause] almost disaster out that outfield with the tying run running lafleur charged that ball one hand and if it got by him it would have been a triple look who's up there now joe rudy rudy has had a funny day he walked he lined the left he lined the right and he struck out he may be overdue so i don't know what tony's going to talk to fight about he may bring in farmer right here it's five to three now with runners at first and second representing the tie runs the batter will be the winning run tony larussa talking ed farmers in the bullpen along with kevin hickey hickey is the left-hander and it will be ed farmer coming in no yes it is there goes lamar height off it as farmer harry i'm jumping on the booth i thought for a minute that uh hoyt was going to stay in but now he's he did a good job one and two thirds innings allowed only one hit the error killed him the error the run is unearned and farmer now will be facing a guy he knows but likewise rudy will be facing a guy he knows and farmer had a fine year last year farmer is six feet five 212 pounds 31 years old he lives in santa monica california originally from evergreen park illinois last year he was 7-9 he had a great start winning i think he had something like 6-0 finished with 30 saves with an era of 3.33 was in 64 games pissed 100 innings which is a lot of innings for a relief pitcher gave up 92 hits 56 bases on balls and he struck out 54. farmer did not have a great spring but his last outing against pittsburgh he had good stuff he threw hard and the one thing about ed now is the secret to his success has been a breaking ball a slow curve ball and he gets over to both left-handers and right-handers because they can't look for that they can't guess that pitch if he throws him a fastball he throws it by him his fastball is generally about 91 or two plus so harry he's used to this situation he's got runners on first and second we lead five to three two outs bottom of the ninth inning and that wall is right on top of him the first four pitches he's warmed up with have been balls and nowhere near the strike zone burns started his ball game and did a whale of a job harry he went six and a half innings well he kept us in the ball game until we could score some runs now it's up to ed farmer lamar height is a pitcher of record we'd have been homes we'd be celebrating already for the unfortunate heir on a very easy chance we kept this ending alive so hold everything go get him harry [Applause] boy oh rooney the banner [Applause] [Music] a great clutch hitter i'm not telling you that to scare us to scare you but just to report the fact you know he's a gamer as they call him the reason you say that his lifetime banning average is only 265 but he's always been a threat he's up there now with a tie runs on base and he hits the ball everywhere [Applause] there's no set defense for him ed farmer's first pitch one ball no strikes [Applause] farmer like brett burns didn't have a very good spring but you saw what burns did when it really counted and that's the way it is here now for farmer the game is on the line this is his bread and butter these kind of situations [Applause] well he's taking a lot of time any harry i don't know whether he's he's a little bit nervous or he's trying to get to hit her a little bit [Applause] centerfield rusty coons shading his eye socks win sox win holy cow say it again that farmer gets to save lamar hoyt the victory and what a ball game this one was to win for the new deal chicago white's out the final five to three as rudy popped to cohen one run unearned one hit one error two left and the white sox of these two teams the white sox are the only one who has a chance to win all the games to be played this season and you can't do that unless you've won the first one right well what do we do now we'll be back with the totals and highlights following this chicago cubs baseball fever tomorrow afternoon at 1 15 as the chicago cubs take on the new york mets in explosive national league action catch all the excitement tomorrow afternoon at 1 15 here on wgn television 9 chicago america's number one sports station [Music] holy cow what a ball game to start the season with and i tell you i've been i've been talking about this before but i have a feeling jimmy that this is the kind of season it's going to be one in which we're in every ball game right down to the last out harry i'll need more blood if we have more games like this this is terrific but as we said in spring training a lot of times during spring training we came from behind and on a tough pitcher that i never thought we were going to do it against eckersley he was so tough but the ball club ever quit and then when carl fisk who caught stanley for years looked for the sinker and hit it right over the fence that's amazing what a story what a dramatic story for the writers our writers from chicago writers all over the country the boston papers i can't wait to read them tomorrow what a game to write about when carlson fists could you say the prodigal son returns home and to deal his old teammates a cruel cruel blow harry you know you got to congratulate him so much he had more press around him more people with mics to talk into and myself trying to get him on the pregame show he never said no to anybody it's unbelievable he had his cool all the way a guy like him you know is a leader and a kind of a guy that you're so lucky to have on your ball club okay jimmy we'll see you sunday all right here are the totals now for the chicago white sox five runs seven hits two airs lamar hoyt the winner a brilliant one and two-thirds innings of relief he allowed only one hit struck out four and then one run that he was charged with was unearned ed farmer comes in to get the final out joe rudy with the tying runs on base he therefore picks up his first save for boston three runs six hits three errors bob stanley and relief the loser he's now on one a lot of stars in this game don't ever overlook ron laflore he got the key hit in that eighth inning to put the tiny runs on base enable squires a sacrifice brought up fisk who actually won the game with his home run and then he drove in another run and as it turned out in the ninth inning the run he drove in became a very very important one as the red sox threatened thanks to to an heir that was committed and then fred burns was just a standout he kept us in this ball game he made two mistakes both home runs he fanned eight in six and two thirds innings lamar heights struck out four and one in two thirds innings so there's a total of 12 red sox batters at the white sox pitchers fan well that's it a thrilling ball game i know you must have enjoyed it especially if you're a white sox fan and chicago wins it on carlton fisk dramatic home run five to three we'll be with you next on radio only sunday our next telecast will be next friday afternoon when the white sox entertain boston at comiskey park three see you sunday radio only so long everybody our next televised game will be between the white sox and boston next friday april the 17th at one o'clock our participating advertisers in today's game were anheuser-busch st louis brewer is a michelob put a little weekend in your week true value hardware stores true value more than just a name it's our way of doing business zenith and your zenith dealers who are moving television into the future this telecast was produced by white sox director of broadcasting laureen fadil produced by dick flanders of channel 9 our assistant director our good friend joe cornejo our sports editor jack rosenberg this has been a wgn television nine sports presentation [Music] this is wgn television channel 9 chicago your chicago white sox and cubs baseball station [Music] harry kerry back at fenway park with the 10th inning show and our guest is eddie einhorn the president of the chicago white sox boy oh boy you talk about the new deal the 1981 chicago white sox are your kind of team what a game today eddie for the first game of the season well harry i i just don't know what to say i'm a little odd the last time i was in this ballpark i was a cincinnati reds fan and it was the seventh game of the world series against the boston red sox and you remember that game that went down to the last inning and joe morgan got the winning hit i don't know that atmosphere seemed to be here today for me and we couldn't have written it any better when carl and fisk came up there in the clutch with two on down two to nothing and put it into the screen and made it three to two uh what can you say there's only one thing i can't say there's 160 what more of these left and if i'm around for the end of it baby i'm gonna have to learn how to slow down uh where's jerry reinstarf today well he's back in uh chicago i know he's watched this one and holy cow i wonder how his heart is beating right now oh my well it's a great kill for both of us because uh you look out on the field and even though we had a few things we didn't like i think with this team we can be competitive with anybody and that's the name of the game i don't know if we're going to win or we're going to lose but we're not going to be disgraced at any time because we're always a threat the pitching is good and i like our chances against anybody if we just go out there and give it what we did today that took the winning attitude and as you said don't overlook ron laflore that was the key hitting that inning as far as i'm concerned that's right of course though the big blow carlton fisk that's what you you and jerry signed him up to do and little did you dream that he would pay such a big dividend so soon hey jerry i think that's worth another trip back to uh la jolla we'll have p king duck again for the third time that's an inside joke friends maybe you read the david israel's column on how jerry reinsdorf and eddie einhorn kept going to the same restaurant as they were trying to talk jerry capstein and uh carlton fisk and the signing of the white side you know i must say this uh greg luzinski didn't have a good day he struck out three times and popped out but that's the kind of team this is going to be because tomorrow he might be the guy who takes charge and wins it for us and that's what i like about this team now we finally have a group where we have take charge individuals and when one doesn't do it another one can and win it for us you know here's a funny thing i talked to ed farmer my last day uh last sunday in uh sarasota before i got back here and he said to me i'm going to tell you what i'm going to do i'm going up to boston i'm going to save the first two games for you half right he's halfway there we're talking with eddie einhorn the president of the chicago white sox be back for more following this message [Music] is looking at you kids again late night saturdays on here's looking at you kid theater [Music] [Applause] lives again late night saturdays on here's looking at you kid theater harry carey back at fenway park with the 10th inning show our interview features eddie einhorn the president of the white sox and we have the other general partner the chairman of the board jerry reinstarf on the telephone with eddie so why don't you tell me what he's saying well uh harry he agrees with you he's he's absolutely has no heart left he's fallen on the floor and uh jerry if this is what's going to happen i think you and i better start alternating games [Laughter] he says he thinks we ought to cut the season to about a dozen games well unless you feel like i do though that and i'm not blowing our horns but but it looks like the team we've assembled here so far is gonna uh give chicago a lot of a lot of things to cheer about this year i wish you could hear uh jerry reinstar but eddie will relay that's right he says that the the uh the fact that all that time in san diego and at carlos murphy's restaurant could pay off in the very first game is a tribute and i think it just puts more pressure on the management namely jerry and i to get out there and try to continue to bring the best players and the best spirit to the city of chicago how about the opening day tuesday uh i know your goal is a record-breaking opening day crowd how close to that are you well harry we got two goals i want a record opening day crowd and i want a record season crowd which would be a million seven in our first year i guess i go for the big ones and that's the way i feel about this team and the effort we've made we're pretty close but there are some seats left and we want to encourage the fans to be there uh uh we hope if we ever could win this game sunday and come near tuesday i think it won't be one of the greatest thrills for white sox fans and uh we'd love to see him there jerry i wish we could hear you here eddie einhorn is relaying though your your words i know i know it had to be as big a thrill for you back there in chicago as it was for for us here at fenway park be sure to talk to your doctor about some kind of heart bolstering pills because i have a feeling we're going to have a whole score of games like this this season which certainly has started out on the kind of a foot that would lead you to believe that it truly is a new deal so far chicago white sox fans are concerned and uh jerry says you look beautiful in a suit and tie thank you very much jerry reinstarf in chicago eddie ironhearn here in boston this is harry kerry from fenway park the final score again the chicago white sox five boston three and a dramatic thriller with the key blow being a three run homer by carlton fitz see you uh radio only sunday next friday afternoon on channel nine at comiskey park when boston calls so long everybody
