- the redditors who use Craigslist have you ever arranged to meet up with someone to buy an item and it went terribly wrong I have a story where I thought the seller was a serial killer was going to murder me in his basement still weren't story I was looking for a chest freezer to convert into a kegerator so a used freezer would be ideal as I had to make modifications anyway I could tell from the photo the freezer was in an unfinished basement the guy said he was moving and this is the last item left meaning there is nothing else in the house I'm a big guy six feet five 220 pounds also I have a concealed weapons permit which I use in such situations I set up the meeting and armed go meet the guy pretty much just as shady as I thought it was going to be but he was cool enough we were moving out of the basement and just as we were loading it into the trailer I had to move around and lift it up higher when I did my t-shirt lifted and he saw that I was armed instant role reversal now he thinks I'm the serial killer he instantly got quiet and nervous he had previously agreed to do an in-person PayPal mobile to mobile he gave me his email and I sent him payment it wasn't showing up right away and he said oh well that's fine I know it will clear have a good day goodbye just like that and walk to his car and drove away appreciating the blue sky the white clouds and feeling the most alive he's felt in a long time I'm sure two days later I get an email Hey the payment never showed up if you don't mind it terribly could you resend turns out in his fear he'd given me the wrong email address TL DR tried to buy a freezer from a serial killer stole freezer coz he thought I was a serial killer paid for freezer days later cuz I'm a good guy I was in my late 20s someone had an Xbox 360 for sale I emailed him and we agreed to meet up in a park turns out to be a kid who was about 14 to 15 years old I pay him cash and I get home and turn it on but the CD drive doesn't open I fiddle with it a bit and realize it's just broken I email him back and he says something to the effect of you have to take the face of the Xbox off and push something on the side then it will open basically he admitted he knew it was broken so I tell him I want my money back and he says no I was guessing he was using his real name first and last in his email address so I opened the phone book yes a phone book and looked up everybody by that last name in that town there were less than 10 entries I dialed the first one and asked if the kid was there she says no this is his aunt's house I politely said oh do you happen to have his home number she gives it to me I find that phone number in the phone book and get the street address I Drive to his house and knock on the door he answers the door and starts freaking out you have to leave my mom can't know I sold that I said I'm not leaving without my money he says I already spent it get out of here I just laughed stepped around him and knocked again on the door until his mom showed up turns out she knew the Xbox was broken also she made him give me the money back he hadn't spent it and I handed over the broken Xbox I was selling in 1996 Dodge Avenger I hadn't driven it much the past year and it had been sitting for about 4 months so I got rid of it before it was a total loss I'd put two new tires front brakes and alignment on it a year earlier so it had a few hundred miles on the tires I took it for inspection and the guy informed me that the radiator crossmember rear driver's shock mount and drivers rocker were rusted out it passed but would need work I advertised it for $800 one guy stopped by he lived nearby he gave me a story about not having much money needed a car to get to work etc he and his friend took it for a two-hour test drive they left the friends very expensive so I wasn't worried that they weren't coming back I had already explained everything I knew to be wrong with the car the buyer started pointing out known problems and offered me two hundred and fifty dollars I got three hundred and eighty dollars as a price we were to meet in a few days for the transfer I met him at a trailer sales office nearby even though I offered to go to triple-a because it would be cheaper he said I took the car to a mechanic he said known problems were wrong how about I give you $300 I said no he was already getting it for less than half my asking price and about what it was worth in scrap we did the transfer he had a say it was a gift in exchange for some work so he wouldn't have to pay sales tax and it cost him $200 even though triple-a would have charged $75 three weeks later the buyer called me he claimed that the head gasket was bad and the car had broken down he wanted to know what I was going to do about it I said look you bought a car off the side of the road for almost nothing I can't offer anything if I had known it had a bad gasket I would have scrapped it it occurred to me later that if the head gasket had been bad the mechanic should have found it when he took it over there originally he hung up then for the next three days called me five times a day I didn't answer and he didn't leave messages a week later I saw the car in a local shopping center lot it had a dent so I knew it was mine he was just trying to scam me a couple years ago I contacted a guy about buying some old pokiman cards for my son I didn't know anything about pokiman at the time he was just getting into it the ad said he was selling 100 cards for $20 only 20 cents a card which seemed like a great deal to me considering it's something like $6 a pack now for 10 cards I arrived at the arranged meeting spot gas station parking lot he handed me a stack of cards wrapped up in a rubber band I handed him a $20 bill and we were on our way it really felt like a drug deal very few words were exchanged I gave them to my son that weekend Deering up for the happiest reaction ever for the coolest dad ever turns out I overestimated things a bit there he thumbed through the cards his massive smile slowly bending into a puzzled expression then he took a deep breath turned to me trying to feign some degree of happiness and gratitude and asked me why I would get him a stack of 100 energy cards I've since learned the difference between holo and foil cards what types are good against other types what it takes to be the very best and that Brock is a total cooze hound I read about a new toast to that Siemens were producing it was designed by portion looked utterly beautiful this baby was made of brushed aluminium with a black outer trim and the thrunk sound it made as the toast popped up was just perfect it retailed for around 80 pounds but I found it brand new on gumtree a website that essentially functions the same as Craigslist for 25 pounds the seller claimed that the reason he was selling it so cheap was that he had received it as a wedding gift and wanted a quick sale as all things that appear too good to be true it was too good to be true the deal went down in the parking lot of a supermarket I gave him 25 pounds in cash he gave me a brand new toaster except that it wasn't brand new I should have really checked it out before leaving but the packaging was still fully sealed when I reached home I discovered that the toaster was stained scratched and the inside was littered with crumbs I was devastated doubly so for I had already donated my old toaster a gorgeous duel at new gen to a charity shop that same morning I immediately called the guy but it kept going straight to voicemail there was a happy ending though I sent a jovial email to Peter lusha then CEO of Siemens advising that I had been hoodwinked by a rogue toaster salesman and that my heart was in pieces to my sheer amazement I received a phone call a week later from one of his people offering me a brand a new toaster a very generous offer by Siemens but sadly the toaster turned out to be [ __ ] it looked beautiful but had toasted inconsistently and had a rather poor build quality I now own a John Lewis brand one and it served me well for over a year his name's Albert for anybody interested I went to buy a Nintendo 64 with a ton of games and a few controllers for $100 he told me to meet him at a Walmart not far from my school so I went off to the school day he told me that morning that he had a cherry red Mustang and to meet him at it at 3 o'clock I pulled into the Walmart and there has to be three or four cop cars around a cherry red Mustang the guy was sitting on the curb while they took out a bunch of [ __ ] from his car he had like two pounds of marijuana on him and some other stuff I was sad I really wanted the Nintendo 64 when to buy a bunch of rock band gear and the lady tells me that her husband will meet me in a large parking lot he'll be in a black and white SUV so I show up and the only car is a highway patrol suburban I casually pull up a space away and get out wondering when the seller is going to show up wondering if I'd unknowingly done something illegal turns out even Highway Patrol gets bored of their rock band gear went as planned but I did get nervous oh yeah I needed Microsoft Office and noticed that people sold the program for cheap on Craigslist one guy 20 minutes away was selling the program for 20 bucks told me to meet at his house late at night when he got home from work ended up being in a sketch dead-end street and told me to come in his garage where him and a couple of his buddies were smoking inside this was my first thought of this is kind of weird after I took my laptop out and put it on the table one of his buddies tried to close the garage door on me I realized what was happening so I tried to grab the laptop and hit the sensors to leave the dude tried to grab the laptop same time and ended up being a quick tug of war with him I let go and hit the sensors and decided to just leave and call the cops they hid the laptop but I was able to use the Find My iPhone app which finds laptops - and got it back I don't know how the guy thought he would get away with it two of my roommates went to purchase a couch from someone living on the third floor of an apartment building they paid for the couch but somewhere between the second and third floors got it stuck so badly in the stairwell they decided to cut their losses and just leave it there not me but a friend he was selling a graphing calculator and arranged to meet the buyer at a shopping center the buyer wanted to test it out but it didn't have batteries my friend agreed to write a grocery store with him to pick up batteries on the way back to where they originally met Maya took the calculator to test it out he plays with it for a minute agrees it is in good condition and passes it back to my friend on the screen the buyer had typed you are kidnapped my friend finishes reading it by locks doors and speeds up friend panics then the buyer stops laughs gives my friend money lets him out and tells him to be more careful almost a Raymond Kaye has all kind of thing I guess I bought a 360 from a Craigslist ad the kids selling it was like 17 we met at a public location Starbucks at my request I handed him the money he handed me the 360 then he asked me if he could buy me a coffee I declined he asked me if I wanted to go out sometime I declined thanked him for the Xbox and left well unfortunately he had my phone number and email address as I had responded to his ad he started sending me these long thanks - filled teenage emails about how he was in love with me and I was his destiny and texting me dozens of times a day yes I foolish he let a strange guy come to my house to buy used iPad I advertised on Craigslist for his son he handed me $40 less in cash than I asked him at saying it was all the cash he had and that he figured it was a fair price when I refused to accept what he offered he became irate red in the face slapped my table with his palm said I was being greedy and that everyone selling on Craigslist negotiate their asking price I tried to calm him down by saying that I had only had the add-in for one day and I would be glad to call him if I couldn't sell it for my asking price he angrily decided he still wanted it and left to go to his bank to get the $40.00 slamming my door behind him so hard that the house shook as soon as he left I texted him not to come back because I had changed my mind about selling the iPad after all he texted me back apologizing but I never responded I felt really relieved that I got him out of my house and also really stupid for allowing him to come in [Music]
