Penn State vs. Minnesota 1993 GAME STORY

penn state hosts the golden gophers of minnesota this has been a long anticipated moment for penn state and head coach joe paterno admits he may be more nervous for this opener than any of the others in his 28-year career as a head coach we'll be back with all the play-by-play with stan saverin and scott pfitzke after this brett conway is going to do the kicking off for penn state conway has been injured but he does have the strongest leg of the penn state kickers and officially penn state is a member of the big ten conference douglas will come out of there with it and he's tackled inside the 10. douglas funded in the end zone probably an ill-advised choice to come out they come out with trips left this is antonio carter they're leading rusher from a year ago gaining three out to the 20 second down and seven shade to throw for the first time quick pop over the middle and it is caught for a first down at the 23-yard line i think we're seeing what we're going to see a lot during the game is jim whacker's offense putting a lot of fellows in motion trying to get penn state's defense off balance rashaan early who's substituting for the injured louis garrison made the catch tyoka jackson eric claire lou ben fatty across the front the linebackers robotic gels is monahan and rob holmberg who last year was a wide receiver in the secondary banner the hero corners pittman and hammonds and lee ruben is the safety first and ten golden gophers [Applause] carter met hard on good run support by lee rubin nonetheless gets forward at the line of scrimmage pressure by jackson intercepted derrick fauna plays the ball beautifully and he intercepts and penn state takes over deep in minnesota territory a senior defensive end from forestville maryland [Applause] i think that might have showed a little experience in the quarterback played the ball beautifully read it beautifully john sacca at quarterback play fake out in the back to ingram and ingram is near the goal line touchdown a flanker screamed at bobby ingram and penn state just like that 28 yards in one play and a touchdown what a good play call by joe paterno getting the young receiver you'll see over in the left hand of your screen iger will just take one two steps up and come right back and you'll see that the guard pulling out making a great block and all you see is daylight ahead of them mike malinowski number 79 through the key block at the point of attack now watch malinowski pull and lead the play here he comes [Applause] also a great block by steven pitts watch number 40 out there and take the legs out from the linebacker [Applause] i think they're going to have to play very conservative on the defensive side once again douglas bobbling the kickoff and again he's going to be dropped with four wideouts shade to throw he's got his man over the middle and it's complete out to the 32-32 down and six from the 37. again a flanker screen and this is rashawn early shade three out of four and he falls down that's the end of the play penn state's defense held and the offense took over this is pitts again looking for room left he finds some in the 20 and the 22 and he's got a first down [Applause] sack of the throw to the sideline [Applause] if they want to get to the rose bowl they're going to have to be able to pass the ball to johnny carter loose 35 and up to the 40-yard line fourth carries 29 yards play fake bootleg sack avoids the rush he'll take it himself does a good job and gets near the first one he's doing uh they're sending them in every play probably with uh either one of the tailbacks or one of the fullbacks and that set sack of throws he's got his man a nice catch the pass and saka took a real tough hit on the plays he released it he's throwing bounds at the no setbacks quarterback draw shade to the five tim shade touchdown minnesota state arguing that he stepped out of bounds they'll get no such call [Applause] and shelly hammonds back deep for penn state this is hammonds that is six waits for the wall he's got room tries to get outside hamlet's got great speed he's the 50. cuts back at the 40. still at his feet at the 30 and finally brought down at the 26 yard back but watch him just jog until the wall forms that's very smart running what a great story hammonds has played running back played defensive back remember the alabama game about two or three years ago he rushed for 220 a wing right and a slot right sacker caught by ingram at the 20-yard line the game is six sacker rolling throwing cross field man wide open to the end zone touchdown guess who it is that's three for three ingram bobby engram has caught four passes today three of them for touchdowns that won for 20 yards in penn state three possession impact on the state in terms of revenue from fans visiting let me spur this touchdown first very good go ahead penn state third and goal at the one yard line short motion to johnny carter looking for the corner he's got it for the touchdown hit the pylon despite a protest from the golden gophers and kajana carter scores penn state's fourth rushing touchdown the first russian touchdown of the afternoon excuse me governor on the wall like you do those posters in the garage we're gonna go down to carter again go back and look at penn state's offense you can see the speed in the corner right there justin tries to push him out of bounds and he just gets that fall over breaks the plane and that's the difference when he sees the end zone he's looking with body control he takes it jumps down justin's got him pushes him and you see the ball he just touches it down looks like an old rugby play where he gets it down in the end zone short kick fielded by chuck rios at his six yard line past the 15 through the 20 and nowhere else penn state greets him at the 20 yard rush darkens the lone setback behind tim shea the handoff on the counter play out near the 40 but not much else they defense they our thought is surefire pro prospect shade back to pass on third and nine has some time tries to hit omar douglas again just a little too far darkens in motion behind state tries to counter once again go side penn state territory at the 49 and back to pass once again on the fake the darkens look for omar douglas and he comes down with the football inside the shade now in motion [Applause] back the other way and now it's shade back to pass tries to find his running back on the 27. shade back to pass has time looks for rashad early he's unable to get to the ball yard attempt and again this is a great story omar salus the walk-on kick is up and it's blocked knocked down at the 30-yard line picked up by penn state knocked down just outs just inside the 40-yard line he would like minnesota on their schedule second and eight sacramento pass has time also has a man open and complete on the play it hands off this time inside to they're gonna find an opening third down and 10 on the 44 sacko with all kinds of time and able to spot his big man the tight end kyle brady look from the end zone the side see sack it back look at the time mike that's the one thing that you've got to get him off rhythm he finds his big target coming across the feedback split behind him ball at the minnesota 28. with a little bit of confusion in the backfield scrambles out of the pocket forced out of bounds at the 31 to stop penn state and get their hands on the ball again saca back to pass looks for bobby engram on a mix-up nowhere near the football a 48-yard attempt by craig fayak the senior kicker gets it up somewhat of a line drive has enough foot but off to the left tim shade now on second and three at the 38 back to pass and he has lots of time he also has omar douglas out to the 40. 22. ball on the penn state 43 inside handoff on the draw darkens trying to find room but it's not there they're gonna meet you at the line of scrimmage and just introduce themselves to you in a nasty way third and 21 shade back to pass finds his man omar douglas but not for john sacca at his 22 and he's back to pass tries his big tight end kyle brady but he can't third and eight on the 22 and saca back to pass once again it's across to mike archie it has the completion but not near a first it's a great opportunity for both teams first and ten on the 43 of minnesota tim shade again scampering on the quarterback tour outside to the 45 of penn state to the 40. runs it ago in the first half a reminder there's no two minute warning in college football shade again on the draw this time near the 20-yard line i wouldn't suggest it in the second half after penn state's had a chance to talk about it back to pass his shade this time is no big name guy on the 21-yard line of penn state's shade back to pass finds his man at the 10 yard line aaron ulster headline tries that quarterback counter they're ready for him this time brought down for a loss on the play 155 to go tim shade back to pass on second and seven finds omar douglas touchdown minnesota [Applause] and there goes the noise right down he still likes the football and special team situations you'll see him returning kicks handoff inside carter pass the 35 45 into minnesota territory on to the 37 now were you hoping that if you're a defensive player the films are going to burn on the flight home doug hoper coming up trying to make a tackle he slips underneath the ball carrier gets to the outside and just keeps running you see everybody just trails and they're pushing and dragging people along on first and ten at the 38 a completion out to the 27 with the inside pressure forcing sacka into the misfield back to pass again issac this time finds his man at the 15. it's bobby ingram we've been calling that man's number fine for the first and ten seconds said okay you got me last time when i take seven steps i'll do the same thing capela tries to knock the ball down out of the air no go this time three spots i think mr mays found one of them handoff to archie inside the 10-yard line five spins down to the three-yard line of minnesota against penn state 10-yard penalty from the spot of the foul if you will down on the field before the game second and 15 saca back to pass looks for mike archie but nowhere here not find the end zone on this play and saka is back to pass has some time rolls out of the pocket has all day looks across field finally feels some pressure from the minnesota defense comes near the 20-yard line to the 19 he's going to keep it out of bounds at the 16. field goal attempt from 32 yards out kick is good penn state strikes with 15 seconds to go in this first half of play okay just be conservative in his approach hands off inside looking for some room in gra and inside it's antonio carter shade back to pass standing at his 44. this will be the final play completes to the tight end pulls over two goes for the third man inside the 20 but down on the play eric dowling that's the end of the first half nice reception by dowling unable though to get any further than inside the 20-yard line let's take a look at home 113 minnesota trailing here in happy valley james beaver second down handoff to carter out near a first down gets a little extra effort on his 39-yard line back to pass finds his man on the flat complete near the midfield stripe gopher defense the second dip backs in the eye sack on the handoff the pits through the 50 through the 40. held up at the minnesota we're going to see some desire in this half sack about the pass again finds his man at the 30-yard line to the 25 well the footing outside coaches always tell you make sure you have the proper footwear on whatever it takes make sure you're ready you look at the pass come from second he grabs the ball maze comes up tries to come inside forces him at least back to the middle with way too much room when these guys catch the ball those yards appreciate first down at the 21 second this time on the delay to archie to the 15. near the 10-yard line first and goal for penn state now the handoff to archie tries to get outside to the 10. near the 5-yard line fumbles the football we'll wait to see who's got it minnesota ball at the two yard line great for tim shade he's in a hole trying to get out handoff inside going nowhere anticipation on what the wide receiver might do third and nine complete shade finds his man ulsterman out of bounds on their own 30-yard line shade turns around finds rashawn early makes a nice move across the 30-yard line [Applause] first down for tim shade back to pass feels the pressure interception holmberg to the 30-yard line 25-20 has the angle touchdown penn state rob holmberg was able to take the deflected pass as tim shade felt the pressure from the backside big play shades got some rhythm he's feeling pretty good he takes sets up a little bit to the left side guess lee releases the ball he is jacked up by his own guy all of a sudden holmberg takes the ball starts rambling down there he thinks he's a wide receiver from last year look at the stride out there following his blockers puts a stiff arm out there he knows where the ends are get a little high step with the ball point attempt second down saca back to pass feeling some pressure and the pressure causes the incompletion third and seven on the minnesota seven back to pass once again and this time he has some time now ed hawthorne breaks through the line coverage looks to the end of the end zone and nice coverage by rosger and ed hawthorne with a late set of records here at penn state kick is up and it's no good it drifts wide and minnesota's defense holds penn state leads minnesota 31-13 here in the first ever big ten game for the nittany lions football at its finest in the interior line after the game by osterman first and ten again he goes for omar douglas his shade goes to the air once again and we got a flag and this could be a late hit number 30 not holding them up as well as they did the first half that pocket is three three completions of receptions for 69 yards having a pretty nice day there's that counter by the quarterback again and shade's able to get a couple but not much it is third and four on the 17 and shades back to pass he's hurried but he finds chuck rios he's able to barrel across for a touchdown minnesota chuck rios found the scene able to turn call it no gain second and ten sacko rolling out plants looks for his man and he finds him and it's bobby ingram across the 40 to the 43 at penn state mr money bobby engram shows up for the nittany lions again oh defense they're sitting back but again the same individual made a great play last time kind of overruns coverage a little bit ingram reads it keeps his feet moving catches the ball between the linebacker and the safety and then just takes those yards up sacca hands off this time to carter reeds is blocking well like gophers trying to strip it but they can't and carter turns the corner and gets it more interesting saca hand off to carter inside finds room makes it through the middle monday night i'm out at the mall of america america's original sports bar you can check out chris carter handoff to carter for their first names kind of rather basic but kijana that's a new one on me saka back to pass rolling out has some time feel some pressure though welcome mr capella the saca attacker of mr capela and russ heath is there new baby to the world ashton their daughter 41-yard try now by the kicker craig fayak kick is up nearly blocked hits the goal post and deflects away no good the gophers get a break of luck we just saw tim shades step back he's looking around he's getting that pocket protection coming in on him but he sees omar douglas coming right down the middle of his own defense he puts it in there throws it above the first guy douglas wraps it in big catch david bertine with a great job of blocking on lou benfatti this time darkin's the recipient of the pass on the flat but really on third and nine on the penn state 47. this time chuck rios across the middle to receive holthe's punt waves for the fair catch at the seven yard line and that's where penn state will take over recruits that jim whacker was able to bring in on the pipeline from texas sack about the pass on third down completes his pass at the 19. [Applause] but he gives him a great opportunity carter on the handoff outside the 30 to the 35 of minnesota russell another first down for john sacca and he hands off the carter once again tries to get outside to the near side wrestled third down backs in the eye behind john sacca gophers trailing by 11 and saca back to pass looks for his man la barca and the reception is good that's to go now in the third quarter john sacca out of the eye hands up to kj clark kajana carter bust through the 40 and for a first down for penn state and they go for it with his backs in the eye sacko hands off the pits minnesota stands up and i don't believe he's got the first down trailing by 11 they got the football at their 29 tim shade back to pass he's hurried and it falls away incomplete a larger team in penn state shade back to pass has enough time to find chris dawkins he's knocked down and there's a fumble on the play covered by the gophers however as minnesota had a scare as burger you're just going to dump it out right there your guards and tackles have to get outside you've got to get that man you cannot let terry killings who's playing outside linebacker come in and almost ruin your back you said earlier about northwestern and notre dame the wildcats lead notre dame now 12-7 so much for that theory third down and 10. ball on the minnesota 29 shade taking charge as he has all afternoon four wide receiver look shade back to pass looks for osterman and holt is back to pass on the fake punt something the gophers tried a lot last year try it once again at this time it doesn't work they try to go out to the 1-yard line back to pass looks down field for bobby ingram and he's got him touchdown number four bobby ingram is killing the gopher secondary today bobby ingram found the seam that has the lead on minnesota well number 25 the young man we told you to watch because he's going to be great he's going to have his moments before he becomes great terence blaine is working one-on-one he's got the speed to stay with him but angles at that point knew his route knew where he was going and 12 16 to go in this football game penn state leading minnesota by 18. 1206 to go in this football game tim shade with the gopher offense four wide receiver look as he's about to pass and looking for chuck rios but if they want to try and stay in this football game and shade is back to pass at his 20. no question about it it's incomplete at second and ten tim shade back to pass feeling some pressure able to get the ball away and right off the noggin of the field judge oh he's gonna stand there for a second he's gonna try man putting his glasses back on gets the kick away and a pretty good kick for holte who's been criticized a little bit in spring ingram back at his own 28 breaks through a couple of tacklers out to the 40. finally wrestling you know he's a cousin of daryl thompson who had some success here at the university as a running back saca back to pass on third and 14. goes across the middle consemius sought to fight his own 23. punt is away and osterman is underneath it he's going to try and run it at his 20. makes a move to the 25 tries to get outside and he does to the 35 out near the 40-yard line rogers and his walk-on opportunity too first intent for the gophers at the 41 shades back to pass and he has omar douglas at the midfield stride you know in this football game his shade is back to pass overthrows omar douglas now on third and 10 on his own 47. shade back to pass on the play-action fake looks across and aaron osterman simply steals it away from the defender and brings it down at the 41 minute fourth and four and the gophers are going for it and they got it so that's how that rules in play this year for the first time you have a face mask shade throws it away tim shade back to pass 44 yards away from a record feeling pressure able to turn in his tight end and it's ruled incomplete for a moment thought maybe eric down and shade is back on the short drop looks downfield to omar douglas and douglas comes down with the football and i believe he has five at the 20-yard line tim shade guiding the the offense of the minnesota gophers and is back to pass throws it away and again the flags on the offense 10-yard penalty repeat it down first in 21 for tim shade back to pass feeling the pressure however was able to get away from the penn state rush and completes his pass second and ten now at the ten shade feels some pressure escapes the first rush throws the ball away and he completely oh nearly completes to get his team in the end zone and back to pass quick hitter across the middle again and complete total 93 000 of them on 4th and 10 on the 10 yard line and shade is about to pass feels some pressure but gets it away and it's intercepted shade trying to force it into the end zone bob rogers 73 blocking here's david he's blocking shades going one way he's got one shot one opportunity and that time it was just an outstanding defense defensive effort tony pittman came up he's another one from good stock david he has a father that played in the nfl for a few keep you updated as we progress collins now the inside handoff to carter crosses the 25 out to the 26 bringing it back and collins rolling out looking for his wide receiver and comes up short skips it off the turf earlier reception tony levine in his place three wide receivers to the left of shade it goes to aaron osterman at the 35 he spins gets out near the 40 of kim shade leading the offense antonio carter the single back again complete this time across the middle decipher you from the other guys shade back to pass on his 45-yard line complete and a big stick but he got up off the ground he did it now you see some good blocking by the offensive line tackles pushing the man poised the point of attack he grabs the ball field against penn state again trailing by 18 late in the game shade has bumped off the pressure in the fall linebacker spot shade back to pass again looks across to olsterman osterman gave it the best a lot of things to improve on and back to pass on fourth and ten is shade tries ocean again this time he's intercepted on the deflection out to the 40-yard line whistle whistle on the play the referees will say that the ball skipped or his knee went down out showing that not only can he hit from the secondary but he can catch the ball shade looking downfield and just the last four passes to ulsterman have been over his head you got to hit him on rhythm he's a shorter receiver you got him this big ten and the rest of the conference for that matter on the handoff of penn state but very well third down handoff inside from the 15 going nowhere fourth and seven on the 18 yard but he's back to pass collins going deep and we might have had an interception on the play yes we do [Applause] coming up and making the interception on the play for the gophers history now made on this play the game is now over david the 38 to 20 between penn state the university of minnesota we welcome penn state to minnesota we welcome penn state to the big ten and mike and i are going to come up just a matter of moments with some final thoughts on this great game penn state today defeating the minnesota golfers 38-20.
