hello how you doing very good i have a rare book to bring in today to see about selling here the coming of the saucers signed by kenneth arnold the first person to report on flying saucers in 1947. take me to your leader you got it i'm here at the pawn shop to sell my rare first edition signed book the coming of the saucers by kenneth arnold i got this book at a flea market about 10 years ago which is really unique about this book is that it's signed by kenneth arnold he was somebody who didn't engage publicly for a very long time it made his signature that much scarcer this is cool i've never read the book but i've heard about it from what i understand kenneth arnold was a pilot and um ray palmer was a science fiction writer kenneth arnold was flying one day on a rescue mission and he saw a line of weird objects in the sky i think maybe like nine of them and he couldn't identify him he didn't know exactly what they were he knew they weren't another plane or any birds or anything like that he just knew it was something weird he had never seen anything move that fast or in that way before after he reported his first case then other people started reporting stuff people started to see weird stuff in the sky so he teams up with ray palmer to write this book it was really like the first book of its kind on the coming of the saucers can i take a look at the book for sure please be very careful there i just want to see the autograph here and i'm so bad at reading cursive do you know what that says let's see to dr holm with our compliments mr and mrs kenneth arnold 1954. okay so this probably was a gift to dr holm probably either he was maybe their family doctor or maybe just a friend of theirs seems to be in fairly good condition all the pages are in there nothing seems to be missing it's pretty cool it's got some pictures in it look at that right there i imagine he's trying to explain what he saw but it's got um some issue with the spine right there on this back it is a autographed first edition so it might still hold some good value yeah what are you looking to do with it i'm looking to sell it and how much are you looking to get 300. okay um i'm not sure the value on it so i'd like to have someone come down take a look at it and then we could go from there that sounds like a good idea all right give me just a few minutes and i'll get somewhere down here what do we have well it's not what kind of book we usually call you in for but i thought it was pretty cool it's still a first edition from what he says and it's autographed by the author so i figured i needed to have you come down all right the coming of the saucers which is a perfect title for this book because this book really does capture the early beginning years of that whole ufl culture and that moment in the 1950s about quote unquote flying saucers that term was coined after kenneth arnold's sighting there were people who supposedly you know saw unidentified flying objects even before world war ii but they weren't spread this way this is the first sighting that like spread across the nation was documented and it was actually taken seriously because arnold was a pilot that was an authority he could explain exactly why he thought they were moving too fast to be like geese or whatever for the first time you had someone who seemed like a creditable witness that's really what kicks off this whole ufo craze and then of course very soon after that you have roswell and it really explodes it really fits the term that we will use in books often which is landmark it's a landmark in the history of ufo literature of all the books to have in in this genre this is the one that you would want and you have a signature right there so that's great i notice on the back maybe there's a little issue with right there i don't know how big that yeah and the hinge is cracked you've got a little bit of edge wear to the spine head and the spine tail some bumping to the corners pages are a little bit toned here you've got some toning as well this is the gutter of the end papers i'm giving you a little like tour of a book's anatomy there i always love your tours yeah well that's why you put up with me how much do you think it's worth okay unsigned copies trade for about a hundred dollars at this point condition makes a difference but it's still not in bad condition by any means so i would add a decent premium because the signature it's much more uncommon and i would list it at 300. okay well i appreciate you coming and talking ufos all right so rebecca says she thinks it would sell for about 300 do i think it's an easy sell i'm really not that sure this might be the kind of thing that i have to sell online in an auction so with that being said i'd like to give you maybe like 125 if you take that um i couldn't take 125. i feel that a fair price to sell to you would be 300 with the expectation it could go much higher the most i could be willing to pay for it would be 175. oh well i think i'm just going to keep it for myself for now well i appreciate you bringing in it's a great book and um i'm sure you'll get what you're asking for it thank you i'm okay with that no deal i would have been happier 300 but i'm also just as happy to keep the book for myself you
