father we come before you Lord we love your son we say he is beautiful he is altogether lovely more lovely than the sons of men the psalmist said is your beloved Son and Holy Spirit we ask you to lead us guide us that we'd have more of him tonight we thank you in Jesus name Amen well we're on session 20 of studies in the life of Christ and we're down to the last six months of Jesus's ministry before the cross and so the first two years of his ministry that was three and a half year ministry Jesus focused on healing and preaching the gospel of the kingdom he didn't really tell people much about who he was he didn't focus on his own identity but rather that the kingdom was being manifest and power was evidence people like that he got closer to those final days he began to in our last session John chapter 7 8 9 to 10 he disclosed his identity in Jerusalem I'm God I'm not just a messenger of the kingdom I am God and that really angered the religious authorities for a number of reasons and now he's pressing the 12 apostles and now expanding it to 70 more that he's training because he only has six more months or less because we don't know the exact time before he would die and then this is the leadership of the book of Acts this is the leadership of redemptive history and so these last six months he focuses on discipleship he's talking to them more about who he is but more about how they are to respond to him so the final months are focused on discipleship here in Luke chapter 10 and 11 really significant chapters training this the twelve and the seventy now the seventy are in focus here in the narrative but the 12 were right there the 12 are right there so this is a kind of a major advancement of his plan because it's been 12 he's been focused on now he's saying I'm gonna anoint many more besides the 12 this was a new announcement now the 70 they were excited but it was a statement that he was going to really expand after the resurrection the Great Commission is gonna say now everybody can be anointed and everybody goes forth so go learn what I told the 12 and 70 and now it applies to you throughout history so here we find Jesus is sending out the 70 in twos so there's 35 teams of two and they're going to these villages and the cities but most of them are pretty small little villages and they're proclaiming the kingdom of God and healing the sick but they're getting trained is what's really happening and Israel's getting a comprehensive saturation of the message from the biggest cities to the smallest villages now there's two sendings he sent the 12 apostles in Luke 9 and now he's sending the 70 in Luke 10 thus endings are similar the instructions are similar so some of the things here in Luke 10 I'm going to refer you back to session 14 where we look at some of the details of don't take a purse with you don't take extra this don't take extra that I'm not going to cover that this time we don't know exactly how long this mission that the 70 went on probably two to three months is what most scholars estimate well let's read it verse one Luke chapter 10 the Lord appointed seventy others and they sent them out by twos it's always important to go out by twos for that mutual support accountability encouragement there's you have a lot more courage when you're together with somebody else they went out before the face of the Lord they went into every city and place and again most of the cities were quite little villages he sent them these 35 teams to the places he was going to go in these final number of months up to six months before the cross but he warns them verse three I'm gonna send you out as lambs among wolves where you're going it's dangerous you're going to be vulnerable the enemy will be attacking you people will be against you like they are against me and you know the seventies this is their first trip out and he wants them not to be naive and not to be offended if they run into trouble verse five and we're going to go over this real fast because we looked at this in session 14 whatever house that you enter he says when you go into the house speak peace over the house and the peace means the leadership of Jesus and his reign and his rule impact and bless your house and if the people receive the message then let the peace stay there he goes on to say if the people reject the message then the peace is withdrawn he said remain in that house eat whatever they give you don't go house the house don't look for a better deal stay where you are for the laborer is worthy of his wages now that's an interesting statement because this is God's idea that the people that labor full-time in the gospel whether to preaching singing or support ministry whatever it's God's idea that they should be supported financially so you don't have to apologize for that not only don't you have to apologize for receiving finance for doing the work of the kingdom good this God's idea but you can talk to God because he's the one that came up with the ideas I'm committed to this idea I'll help you verse 9 he says heal the sick it's the same thing he told the 12 because when you heal the sick a couple things happen it opens doors of opportunity for the kingdom matter of fact many people and outreaches when they go knock on a door they say hey is there anybody that needs prayer that's a that's a real common strategy of any kind of systematic witnessing of a town or a city or a village you knock on the door and you say hey is there anything that we could pray for you for anything that you would like to ask God about you know a lot of times they go I don't know was there anybody sick here and you pray for him and that creates what number one it's God's compassion for the sick person that I mean that's a very important part of it but it opens doors and they go like who who is this God that just touched my family member and it's a proof that the kingdom of God is real and announce to them that the kingdom of God has come near you now notice they're not to announce that Jesus is the Messiah because he doesn't want them to say that till after the resurrection because even the twelve are confused about that like we look at in our last session they have a confused idea about what kind of Messiah he is because they don't like the idea he's going to die so they're all mixed up so Jesus is mostly telling them just say the kingdom the presence of the power and the blessing of God is it's a new day it's a new it's a new era in Salvation history and so they're not really talking much about Jesus at all they're talking about the president of the kingdom but after the death and resurrection it's about Jesus and the kingdom verse 10 this is a real interesting new development it's the idea of judgment he says when you enter a city if the city doesn't receive you now the way what you say say to them the very dust of your city will wipe off our feet in a you're making a statement of protest and you're making a statement a declaration of the the fact that God is not pleased with their rejection now a City to reject means the leaders of the city because typically what would happen they would go into a town and the religious leaders from Jerusalem have so impacted the whole community of Israel and all the forties structures there yeah we heard about this guy from Nazareth get out of our town so it's really when he says if the city doesn't reject you talking about the main authorities in the city cut telling them to leave it says when they say that to you because this is Israel Jesus is the Messiah and you're doing signs and wonders in their city and they're refusing it then tell them that make the statement of protest tell them that it's serious what they're doing look at paragraph II down in the notes here wipe off the dust of your city and again they were do eclis in front of the leaders of that city this was a symbolic warning of judgment to that city it's not just they were rejecting the people's testimonies but this was a dramatic witness because they were healing everyone they were praying for this is a very unusual opportunities not very many times where teams went into City and healed everybody that they prayed for or nearly everyone they prayed for this was an unusual blessing of God to that City now in these final six months of Jesus's ministry before the cross he begins to emphasize the theme of judgment and the theme of judgment is that it's this when God releases blessing that it is true today to not just back then but when God releases his blessing it's not neutral there are implications there are consequences when the Lord releases healing in a city an area a church a family and that family church city doesn't respond with greater responsiveness to God there are consequences of that some people think well God blesses us well that's cool we pick it or choose it Jesus says no they don't understand my government in my leadership if the God of heaven releases blessing he demands a response or there is a greater trouble coming when they stand before the Lord paragraph F he goes on to develop this idea this is a new idea to the people of Israel and in many in the body of Christ they don't think about this but this is part of the discipleship training that the disciples were to understand this part of God's economy you don't hear much about the consequences of rejecting the goodness of God we mostly hear the goodness of God is available and that's the end of the story but that's not the whole story the goodness of God again is not neutral it is a real person who really is offering goodness and really desires relationship with the people he's showing his goodness and he really requires a response that's appropriate to the goodness she shared with them paragraph F or verse 12 he says tell of this it will be more tolerable in the day in that day the day of judgement the final day it will be more tolerable for the people of sodom and gomorrah then it will be for the people of that city I have sent anointed teams who are healing the sick in a way it's never been done in Israel at this level and proclaiming a message of goodness and the leaders are biased and prejudiced by the opinions of the authorities from Jerusalem well the authorities of Jerusalem also warned all the other towns that if you don't follow our lead we're gonna have penalties against you as well so these leaders are kind of like oh man we gotta we don't do what the big boys in Jerusalem tell us we're gonna get ourself in trouble because the book that the leaders in Jerusalem had the power to bring penalties and to excommunicate people from the synagogue and from the system I mean that the authorities are Jerusalem they were so biased against Jesus but the people were so afraid because there were real penalties and excommunications and economic consequences for that and the leaders of these towns and villages were under the mandate of the hierarchy from Jerusalem Jesus said tell them this the leadership of that city and the people of that city go with that leadership because they don't want to get in trouble they don't want to get the penalties that will come to them if they receive the good news the penalties from the leadership in Jerusalem it will be more tolerable the day of judgement for the people of sodom and gomorrah then it will that village or that city then he goes on in verse 13 woe to you corazón he names three cities woe to you bethsaida if the mighty miracles that were released in your midst had been done in tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago now tyre and sidon were Gentile cities that are modern-day Lebanon just north of Israel and the Prophet Amos told tyre and sidon that if you don't repent judgments coming and Alexander the Great some years later brought tremendous judgment to that area and Jesus said that wouldn't have happened if the miracles that I did in your towns were done in those cities they would have repented there Gentiles then he really picks it up he says verse 14 it's going to be more tolerable for the people of tyre and sidon just like the people sought him on the last day then it will be for you on the last day verse 15 then he really focuses on Capernaum because Capernaum was his headquarters that's where he had been based for the last couple of years and these other two cities in verse 13 cores and in Bethsaida they were just a mile or two three miles away from a Capernaum those three cities were right next to each other you know just a mile down the road type thing and many of Jesus's greatest miracles were done in the witness of those three centers and they thought man Wert we got it made the new popular movement has come to our town but again the religious authorities greatly impacted by Jerusalem bias the people and warned them of penalties if they didn't obey the rabbinic authorities so these cities actually rejected Jesus and Jesus said it is so troublesome for you that God became a man dwell in your city did the biggest miracles in human history and you said no to that look at paragraph half final judgement will be less severe on these three Gentile cities and those like them then on the cities that were favoured with the revival you know people say Lord send revival notice I will and he has through history but when I send revival if my people don't continue to respond to me they will be worse off after the revivals over some years then if the revival never came and so we look at history and many of the revival zones or revival areas of history ten and twenty thirty years later are burnt over zones at forty years later where the church is cold and and it's this thing of human nature that does that and there's other examples where the the the grace continues paragraph G the measure of judgment on the last day increases for believers and unbelievers according to the amount of plan of a privilege and opportunity God gave them if God gave a person a family a city a nation more blessing and more opportunity they have a higher standard of judgment on the last day believer and unbeliever like I don't not for the believer I don't mean you don't get into heaven but once you're accepted to have it as a free gift but the evaluation of our life is dynamically connected to the amount of privilege we experienced in the grace of God in our everyday life in the grace of God so we press in and get a breakthrough and it's fantastic if we stay with it but if people don't stay with it the Lord's his way back then I visited you look at the next 20 years later you didn't walk it out and there again they don't go to health or believers but it's not a guy don't know what happens Jesus Paul talked about believers suffering loss on that day but they're still saved but unbelievers there's degrees of judgment and severity of the judgment just like there's degrees of blessing for the redeemed now the reason that's important this is part of the message he's giving the seventy training them as messengers and training them as disciples to grasp this is a very real powerful consequential dramatic storyline it's not well whatever happens happens he goes know if it the Lord releases something the consequences are real and they're serious and the blessing is real if received and walked out you know the guy you know over the years I have people say oh I want an angel to visit I go really the angel visits you have to do what the angel tells you for the next 40 50 years of your life he gives you assignment that five-minute encounter will be so exciting but you got fifty years now to walk that assignment out and if the angel comes and you don't walk it out that's not good okay I want an angel to come and just tell me that my life will be fun and amazing that's all I want just an angel for that well they don't come for exactly that reason look at Luke chapter 12 now this is just a just a little bit after Luke 10 it's in the same timeframe actually Jesus said verse 47 now he's talking about he's talking about the culture in the Roman Empire were slaves and servants were very very common and if slave did not obey they've got they got punishment severe punishment so he was talking in the Roman culture everybody understood this culture so he says I'm gonna talk to you according to what you understand verse 47 he says the servant that knew his master's will and didn't do it is beaten with many stripes has a more severe penalty verse 47 but 48 the guy that didn't know but still did bad stuff he has a lesser punishment there are degrees he goes let me give you the principle every one believer and unbeliever alike to whom much is given the Lord will require a greater response of commitment and steadiness and reliability and perseverance in the relationship with him and to whom much has been committed the revival the Blessed ministry the increase of resource the favor of God the Lord will ask more from that man that woman that family that city that nation that ministry he will ask more from them on the last day top of page 2 well the 70 went out and again it's probably a two-month trips we're guessing that's what most of the commentators guess it two months three at the most they come back these 35 teams to verse 70 they are so excited verse 17 fantastic we said in the name of Jesus and the demon came out it was amazing it was so fun demons are subject to us when we say your name I mean it's powerful I touched this one guy in bow but the power got hit he was awesome jesus said in verse 18 he goes you know I I had a vision very insight to what was happening in your Minister trip I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven now there's different ways to interpret this passage but I believe the most convincing and even the most common way to interpret is that Jesus had an open vision that when they were casting out demons he was seeing defeat of Satan's domain as these people were going forth that's one of several ways to interpret this verse I think that's the most common and the most convincing way he says he goes I had a visionary insight as to the success of you 35 teams and it was really disrupting and troubling Satan's Kingdom there was a defeat that was happening as you were going forward verse 19 because I give you authority to trample on serpents and serpents and scorpions now serpents the scorpions in the Bible is symbolic of demonic powers he goes I gave you power over I gave you authority over all the power of the enemy now here's a key verse nothing show by any means hurt you now this verse was meant for this particular ministry this this particular mission charge that lasted two or three months now the Lord could use this verse anytime in history he wants he could speak it by the Holy Spirit but the Lord is not giving an all-inclusive everybody no one's going to get hurt because there were many martyrs in the book of Acts they got hurt there have been many martyrs in church history matter of fact a few moments later he talks about they're gonna come against you and people will lose their life but he says on this particular trip because of my the reasons I have strategic reasons for it no one's getting hurt at all and I like that verse big in the Bible because the Holy Spirit can lift it up anytime he wants and apply it to any situation he wants but I've seen said people say that means everybody at all times I go what about the martyrs and Jesus said they will kill you they will beat you they are huh I don't know Jesus is not the contradiction Jesus but verse 20 here's the really important part he goes don't rejoice because you got power and it's exciting it goes I know it's exciting for you I get that this is new you touch somebody the demon went out you are whoo you know yeah and the name of Jesus you know you put that well that was amazing cuz he the kind of it's exciting and you know people are getting help and there's a whole new kind of thing happening he goes well let me tell you there's a bigger story line that having an excitement in your ministry for a few years and he's not against that because he's telling them to heal the sick and cast out devils but he goes don't get don't make that the dominant narrative of your life you're impacting in ministry because there'll be times you'll have seasons will you have more impact than you will other seasons he says the main narrative of your life is the factor of God's family forever and forever and forever forever your mind and I'm yours forever and forever that's the storyline to get connected to because you get connected to that storyline when there setbacks when they just don't go right your heart is still anchored you get all your attention to how much impact you're having and you're gonna respond accordingly you're gonna lose your way in a short amount of time let's go to paragraph II verse 21 Jesus says I want you to rejoice you're in the eternal family you're in the eternal storyline I want you to be anchored in the eternal narrative not just the temporal one verse 21 then Jesus says I rejoice the same theme of rejoicing is continuing I mean they were rejoicing because demons came out and they had power Jesus said that's good but shift over rejoice you're in the you're in the storyline of God's family forever and rejoicing now too here's why I'm rejoicing I'm so grateful I'm so happy verse 21 he breaks out in prayer father you hid these things from the wise and when he says the wise he means the so-called wise the wise according to men's opinions not according to God's and he's talking right now about the scribes and Pharisees who have already determined that they're going to kill Jesus and the scribes and Pharisees are not only going to kill Jesus they are they are creating this biased against him all over the land with real penalties for standing for Jesus again being kicked out of a when you're excommunicated in that culture the economic and the shame factor of it and the isolation of it was so big it was really real and they had determined these leaders of Jerusalem to bring this kind of influence and bias the whole nation against Jesus using their natural influence Jesus said I'm so grateful father you hid the truth of who I am the truth of a relationship with me the truth of my power being released in them you hid it from the people who don't want you you don't they don't even know what's going on they've set their heart against you the wise and then you've hid the story from them and you gave it to babes he's not talking about two and three year olds in this context he talked about the weak the vulnerable the ones that don't have any power to fight back in the natural and in this context it's the it's the seventy disciples right here he's talking about because you gave them the inside story that I'm God that I'm glorious they can partner with me they can move in my power their names are in the book of life forever get it the simple vulnerable people again simple vulnerable in the eyes of the religious leadership and establishment in Jerusalem I don't mean everybody was simple and kind of foolish I don't mean that but in the in the estimation of the world verse 22 and he looks at the 17 he says and you can be sure what I'm telling you is true that God is really gonna give more of this to you because verse 22 the father's given me everything that means I have the authority and I'm reliable in what I'm telling you nobody has the story like I haven't of what's happening he says everything's be given to me so you can be confident than what I'm telling you is the truth I have all authority I have all power and I am so excited that father is using you and showing more to you and I'm gonna show it this to more people like you and Jesus has the authority and he's - he's excited he's rejoicing that people like us are included in the storyline that's what Jesus is rejoicing about verse 23 hey go bless it are the eyes let's see the things you see now they're pretty excited still because they cast a few demons out and that den is exciting I don't want to minimize that then that's exciting and they heal the sick that's fantastic here he goes but you're more blessed than you know because the day is coming what trouble will come your way for now they can't even touch you for this limited time because of my sovereign decree for this season but your eyes are blessed beloved we take a step back and we can get to see what's really happening we can get so lost in the struggles of the enemy against us you know waging war against our own fear in dark desires and Confused ideas and and we forget our eyes have seen not in the physical sense but because this promise is more than just they physically saw the miracles we see who Jesus is beloved we are blessed among all people I'm talk about the billion in the body of Christ in the earth or whatever the number is and it's so easy to get lost in the story of discipleship is costly and it's hard and people don't like it and I'm laboring but not much is happening and the Lord sings wait wait wait you're blessed you're blessed don't lose sight of the truth many prophets in the Old Testament many kings looked for the days of the New Covenant for the Messiah and the New Covenant where the Spirit of God would be given to individuals all over the world they longed for that season of that day they could only wait and long and hope for it and you're in it beloved were filled with the holy spirit were born again we have Bibles were in we're in connected relationships with people that were going forward and what we do is written in the books of heaven and a shifting history and it matters no matter how little or big the impact it moves God's heart he writes it in his book beloved your eyes are blessed if you get that bless it are your eyes if you could see that again I just physically see it 2,000 years ago but you can see the storyline turn the top of page 3 now Jesus moves on he's still on discipleship he's showing them the eternal perspective just kind of like we looked at last week he's anchoring them in the big storyline of who they are before God and how blessed they are and they have authority and they're really vessels of God now he's going to move on paragraph a top of page three Roman numeral three he continues to teach on discipleship he's teaching the 70 still and the 12 are there and this lawyer came and asked a question now his lawyers a part of the scribes and Pharisees the religious hierarchy and Jesus used this question as a context to teach more on discipleship because again were these final six months he's one to lay out the key principles for discipleship not just for the seventy in the twelve but because it's gonna be recorded in the word wits for us as well so what Jesus is gonna do he's gonna highlight the first and the second commandments the two great Commandments right here because that's a critical part of discipleship paragraph B verse 25 this lawyer now is not a lawyer like we think of a lawyer and the legal profession he's a religious leader a scribe he's one of the authorities of the Bible he's a I mean knows all at me knows the languages knows the ancient texts knows at all so this lawyer and they're against Jesus and they're tricking him at every time the lawyers or the scribes Pharisees Sadducees they're all in it together though there's some distinctions between them verse 25 so this lawyer said testing him trying to trick you they're trying to get Jesus to say something that will cause popular opinion to come against him so they can kill him without having a revolt in Israel that's what it means when they're testing him they're trying to getting to say something to shift the popular opinion and tell the whole nation he said this can you believe it and so there again they can kill him without any you know revolt of the people that they killed a prophet so the teacher asked him verse 25 what do I do to inherit eternal life and Jesus so often he answers a question with a question he goes well what's the Bible say when it says what's written in the law the law means the Bible tell them at the law of Moses he goes what's the Bible say verse 27 now every religious leader knew the two great Commandments everybody did he said well let's love the Lord your God and love your neighbor as yourself verse 20 agent said you said rightly go do that and you'll live meaning you'll have eternal life now the guy's a little disturbed and he goes okay love God I do that because he had all these religious rules he was keeping he goes my neighbor who's my neighbor who's my neighbor now Jesus is gonna use this to talk about the second commandment loving our neighbor as ourselves the paragraph C before we go to that point it looks at a quick read in verse 20 28 jesus said you've answered rightly do this and live in other words if you love God and love your neighbor you will have eternal life and some people read that they think oh they're earning salvation this is different because I thought we didn't earn salvation and that's not what Jesus is saying paragraph C the way to receive eternal life or salvation that's synonymous you could use any term you want is exactly the same in the old and new Testament there's groups that were confused about this they think in the Old Testament you earned it and God was mean and the New Testament it's free and God is nice God is exactly the same he never changes old a New Testament he's really nice and his judgments are against everything that hinders love and he hasn't changed his judgments don't in any way contradict his love at all and older new and in the Old Testament Abraham David and everybody was saved by faith they have animal sacrifices those are just pictures of the Messiah who would one day purchase with his own blood our salvation and they didn't they knew the animals didn't save them they knew the animals were pointing to something yet future so they were saved in the Old Testament by faith with a really nice God just like the nudes exactly the same Paul said it really good here he says it's for in Christ it's faith working through love so we're saved by grace but we're saved by grace through faith but faith that works through love meaning that when we say yes to Jesus in faith we're not just saying yes I believe I can be forgiven we're saying that we believe you will accept us in relationship and we accept your leadership we're weak and broken but we say yes to the relationship which includes forgiveness we're not mostly telling people how to get out of hell we're mostly telling people they can get into a relationship with God for free and that includes the sin being forgiven but they're being called to relationship by faith because they can't earn that relationship they can't do anything to get it it's because God gives it for free to them but it's a relationship where they set their heart to love now they're not kicked out if their love doesn't grow and they're not brought into salvation on the basis of how immature their love is but faith means they're committing themselves to Jesus and his leadership to love and we're accepting the relationship that's faith that's confidence that he's accepted us into the relationship which we will show love we will receive love and show love some verses emphasize the faith part and some verses emphasize the love part but they're essentially the same thing because again he's accepting us into a relationship that's about love that's what we have faith to be accepted into we're not accepted into a room the forgiveness room were accepted into a relationship so there is no difference if you commit yourself to him and receive salvation you're on the track to grow in love that's what it's all about well the lawyer paragraph D he doesn't like this love your neighbors because the lawyer wants to make a distinction between who is a neighbor and who is a non neighbor which which is racism he says but people like me the Jews our neighbors the Gentiles especially the Samaritans are non neighbors jesus goes no no that's the how it works humans are neighbors not humans like you humans are neighbors now all Jews accepted Jews typically someone didn't like some of them but of course but but they don't like Gentiles and Samaritans were Gentiles LexA they were half Jewish and half Gentile but they were hostile towards it so they were having tremendous hostility between each other it was a racial conflict of the most intense expressions in the days of Jesus so Peres growing number for Jesus's okay I'll tell you who your neighbors is human it's a human that doesn't look like you so human didn't have your background here's let me tell you a story verse 30 we all know it a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho that by the way that's a 17 mile walk it's a lonely isolated winding roads it was famous for thieves and robbers harming people on that road very dangerous to go on that road without a without a like a paid you know a police force or military guard I mean that was a very dangerous road to travel on everybody knew it I mean understood when he said Jerusalem to Jericho they went oh okay that's that's the bad road to go on okay well he fell among thieves the thieves beat him up verse 31 a priest came along a Jewish leader now a priest is one of the spiritual leaders who reads the Bible all the time so he's always cuz their authorities of the Bible they're all running into commands in the Old Testament to show compassion so he knows better because he's he's interfacing with the command of God to show compassion all the time because he's a Bible scholar verse 31 he saw the beat-up guy and walked on verse 32 a Levite a Levite are the the assistants to the priest they're the priests helper they're their support team he did the same thing he's not quite the Bible scholar the priest is but he's on the team and he looked the other way verse 33 a samaritan a non-jewish guy he looked at that jewish guy beat up I mean he's stepping across a racial divide I mean there's animosity there's hostility there's hatred he goes so want you're human and he went he had compassion and you know the story he fixed him all up and paid his bills etc etc verse 36 Jesus said who's the neighbor the spiritual leader like you mr. lawyer or the racial guy the guy on the other face you don't like who obeyed the ways of God and the lawyer said well I guess technically the he who showed mercy the man couldn't get the word Samaritan out of his mouth he goes thank God you know the guy who helped the guy can't say Samaritan that's it hurt to say this is racial tension on Jesus is using this story on purpose let's go top of page 4 the very next thing Jesus is walking and the 70 or with him the twelve he's training them now I mean they're coming down to the wire coming down to the last couple months but the way that Luke lays it out he picks the stories by the Holy Spirit he goes into this town we know it's the town of Bethany just a couple of miles from Jerusalem Martha welcomed him to Martha's little sister younger sister verse 39 Luke Ted for thirty days Mary Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus hearing his word Martha was really bothered by this because Martha was serving in the kitchen she came to Jesus and said why don't you rebuke my little sister and tell her to get up and get in here and help me verse 41 Jesus kindly rebuked the bigger sister instead of the little sister he said Martha Martha you're worried you're bothered so many things bother you but verse 42 one thing is needed your little sister figured it out and she chose the one thing needed and they will never be taken away from her ever now this is a very significant story because this is now he just talked about the second commandment now he's talking about devotion to God in a very specific direct way now when we love one another we really are showing love to God so it's a artificial separation to say that if we're truly loving people and we're doing it with devotion to Jesus we're loving Jesus by loving people but it's a fine line it's a it's kind of shark-infested waters because a lot of people are the good samaritan but they have no devotion to Jesus at all and that's called humanism humanism is people helping people which is good but when people helping people becomes the dominant theme of a person's life and the relationship that Jesus is marginalized or not a part of it then people into helping people the number two thing has now become number one and the Lord says now you'll never be able to walk that out and he says right after the great after the Good Samaritan story he's talking about the need to be aligned to his heart while you're doing the Good Samaritan stuff you can't separate the two is the message of Luke here's Mary this young woman young single woman she's never mentioned ever in the book of Acts she never has a public ministry she's never known in the courts of man not in church history not in the book of Acts but she's known in the courts of heaven for her devotion to Jesus Jesus tells Martha he's not rebuking Martha for surfing at all some people say Martha is the servant Mary's kind of the mystic no no that's that's going on God's Jesus is not rebuking Martha for serving Jesus rebuking Martha for serving with a wrong spirit serving disconnected with him now let's get the storyline God in the flesh is in your living room he wants to tell you things and he's going to die soon and you're in there making extra sandwiches and act getting this toothache of soup just in case he wants it goes Martha stop I am the Genesis one God in your house sit down I'm only here very few times Oh Martha stop it I mean the privilege well what let's go way down what if an angel Michael the Archangel appeared in your living room and you decided to vacuum the other bedroom that's way lesser than what Martha was doing so well maybe we vacuumed after you leave there you go but I want you to notice this Martha Mary is mentioned three times in the Bible I've got this written down here all three times she's at the feet of Jesus the Holy Spirit gave that portrait of her in the holy book and the holy record she's listening to his word paragraph B beloved we'll never be able to sustain the Good Samaritan lifestyle without a Mary of Bethany heart connect with the Son of God and it's not just to connect to energize us its renewing our love so we're energized to love people out of our love for him and a fresh exchange of receiving his love for us it's not just I want to get you know a little built up a little bit so I could go help more people now he goes I want you to remember that I love you you love me and then the gratitude of that you'll be a really good at the second commandment you get get us connected to that you're gonna get burnt out in the second commandment because people aren't gonna respond that guy you helped isn't gonna respond right and you're gonna get offended and your feelings hurt and if you don't have me to connect with you have no other storyline besides people treat people bad and you're gonna be just sitting as a Christian couch potato signing off for the body of Christ because they didn't treat you right the body of Christ is filled with those people they did the Good Samaritan stuff but they didn't do the Mary of Bethany because they thought they were opposite that's one reality is what Luke is telling us paragraph D Mary chose the good part nobody can choose that for you you have to choose that God won't choose it for you or make you choose it and I love paragraph F Jesus said don't never be taken from her you may never hear of her church history but I will always remember her love for me that grace will be on her life all of her days and the fruit of it will be at the judgment seat of Christ forever after her life it will never be taken from her she's not wasting anything bike yourself to me cuz that's the accusation they had against Mary she's wasting her life she said now actually not that grace will never leave her and the fruit of it will always be with her in the eternal rewards I will give her on the final day that's a big statement never take away Roman numeral six just the last three or four minutes here he's continuing in the same vein of discipleship now he's talking about prayer because he's done that the second commandment love people the first commandment have devotion to Jesus now we say it's more than just devotion to me I want to call you to prayer because I want partnership with you in every sphere of your life I don't want you just devote it to me I do but it's more than that I want the conversation that you have with me in private to be effect everything in your life it's partnership you talking to me me we're spring back to you you praying and releasing wisdom and resource provision for print protection correction you releasing all of that in partnership in life that's what Luke chapter 11 is about it's the same prayer reality but brought to full dimensions of our life not just our personal devotional life which is glorious but Jesus says there's more than that I'm going to be involved in everything of your life now I want you talking to me to be the way I release wisdom direction protection resource everything so he goes in Luke chapter 11 Luke Luke chapter 11 paragraph see here at the very bottom it's one of the most important chapters on prayer in the whole of the Bible table at page 5 you know this stuff so I'm just gonna give you the rapid-fire because it's not new information I just wait you going oh yeah yeah okay of course paragraph D The Lord's Prayer Jesus gives us six requests in the Lord's Prayer this is the model prayer paragraph day three of the requests focus on the glory of God and three of them on our personal needs starts off paragraph E our Father in Heaven the in heaven part means he's powerful glorious awesome transcendent Almighty the father he's tender he's personal he's close so he's the real powerful God but he's close and personal and tender he's your father they went okay he goes you got to start there some people go tender father but he's kind of like their little buddy God's not our little buddy and some people have the almighty God but he's far away - he's not tender with them Jesus that is your father who dominates and rules the heavenly realm first petition he goes asked that his name would be holy in your life and released through you paragraph J asked for the kingdom power to be released in you and through you paragraph H third petition as for God's will to be done commit to personal obedience number four pray for daily bread that's provision that's you know I want the Lord to give me monthly bread I love monthly bread I really I like decade breads what I really like I want enough money wisdom direction and grace for a decade so I never think about it Lord says no I want conversation with you every single day because I want you to have security because you talk to me not security because you know what's going to happen well just give it give me maybe a cool ten million dollars would be good guaranteed health and energy good perfect clarity about everything I'll talk to you I promise I'll talk to you here and there he goes no daily bread gave you Direction provision strength encouragement one day to time huh and talk to me as you talk to me I'll give you more number-5 forgiveness we don't forgive so we earn forgiveness we forgive because we're compelled by gratitude because we're forgiven when we're truly forgiven we're compelled to forgive our people against us and Jesus said if you don't forgive them it's a statement you've never been compelled by the forgiveness of God so we don't forgive to earn forgiveness we forgive to express the forgiveness that's real and if we're not forgiving that means there's a need to evaluate whether we've really been forgiven because it's not touching us anymore then paragraph petitions six the prayer for deliverance from evil paragraph L now he gives a parable he says I've given you the model of what to pray and how to pray those six requests and there's a thousand subunits to those six requests but because I'm giving you the the big tracks to run on now paragraph L he goes now I want you to persevere I want you to persevere I don't want you to give up because I'm gonna end my wisdom there's gonna be times where the prayer the answer will be delayed and I want you to persevere I don't want you to persevere to talk me into it that's not what this parable is talking about you're not gonna persevere to wear me out cuz I'm not I don't become worn out by your prayers I want you to persevere as a statement of your confidence that I delight to hear you and that you won't back away until the will of God is done and I'm gonna keep you in the conversation with me and I want you to persevere because that's what I'm after I'm after the conversation and I'm gonna release my will and when it's delayed you don't don't you dare back away be bold because the reluctant friend in the parable the man knocked on his door at night and the reluctant for instant okay okay and Jesus says if a reluctant friend will give in how much more will a gracious father see that you're persistent and you're in the dialog with him he wants the dialogue you know God doesn't want the information he already knows your needs he wants the conversation not the information and he says but I want you to quit by a fence or concluding I'm not listening I we have covered stay with me I'm far more gracious than that man who gave in to the request in this parable page 6 paragraph M we'll end with this worship team go ahead and come on up he says I want you to ask verse 9 keep on asking the verb is in the present continuous ask and keep on asking knock keep on knocking seek keep on seeking everyone that stays in the conversation will receive the will of God in those areas don't conclude the delay means I'm not listing and they don't care I do care verse 11 for if a son ask bread for his father will they give him a stone the answer is no a father will give a sudden the bread he ask for fish will give him a snake no the father will give him the fish verse 30 if you being evil could give you know how to give good gifts how much more is my heavenly father who's totally good willing to give you the Holy Spirit now when he says give you the Holy Spirit he doesn't just mean the day you're born again and then you get filled in the Holy Spirit that's always talking about is saying all of the Ministry of the Holy Spirit which is gifts through wisdom anointing power he keep asking how much more will a good father give it persevere don't back away because of delay don't back away because of shame don't back away because of offense stay in the conversation and this is Jesus giving discipleship love God with all your heart live in devotion love men and women the Good Samaritan but stay connected to the Lord but beyond just connected to the Lord bring him into every sphere of your life by asking seeking and knocking I just got a little bit on that and more in my book on prayer growing in prayer guy I spent quite a bit of time on this but those are three different dimensions of God invading your entire life he says I want to be fully involved with you amen and amen let's stand Lord we want to be disciples I want to be a disciple I'm gonna cast out devils I want to stay connected to the eternal storyline I want to see that my eyes are blessed I want to love God love people with all my heart I want to sit at your feet I want to ask seek and knock how about that lifestyle with the whole thing lord I want to be one of your disciples like this here we are long I'm serious yes I'm saying horses will you be what if my two seconds yeah not just the person at a prayer lines grateful forgiveness will you be obviously yeah I'm saying yeah [Music] see and I want to follow you I wanna be your disciple I'm seeing [Music] yeah [Music] ah and I'm saying [Music] I'm [Music] again [Music] but blessed are your eyes that see what you've understood [Music] for he rejoices that people like you understand but your names are in the book [Music] I wanna see the bigger picture [Music] holy spear we ask you for a greater increase it's gonna linger here for a little while follow just that direction I don't want to get her in a hurry let's just settle down and just reconnect with him that conversation [Music] [Music] in your story I wanna be your deshabille I'm saying [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm asking for bread step at a time and your fee I'm saying [Music] I'm gonna pray for people that their hearts have been injured in the journey [Music] the Lord says your eyes are blessed I want to open the more I want you to see more notice not against us when our hearts get hurt but it says I want you to see that your eyes are blessed one over two more only get caught up in the bigger story I get going in that big story that I lose my way then I have to rely and I lose my way to rely beloved this is the way we have dominion over pain in our heart we get caught up at the bigger story all the pain does it go away but the pain is different when we have the big story I'm gonna pray for people your hearts have been injured in relationship and the body of Christ and life and people money healing broken heart whatever that's you your heart is just hurting right now I want to ask the Lord to visit your heart with grace invite you to come on out [Music] to rob me don't distraction to take my [Music] I wanna see the bigger picture I wanna see the bigger plan and I'm saying I'm saying [Music] I'm saying [Music] I'm saying Jesus declared this was a declaration that I believe liberated hearts healed hearts it's not just a description it was a declaration blessed ever your office blessed are your eyes let's see blessed are your eyes that see open the eyes of the understanding your names are written in the book Jesus were Joyce's that people like you are in the story in the journey with them [Music] you say I fell all alone Jesus I rejoice but the babes are in the story with me on the journey with me my father has called you you're mine [Music] and éclairs blessing on their eyes that would feel different they would see different [Music] and help me [Music] let me see stillborn and he'll be buried [Applause] [Music] for me for me when I like you I come my sense
