hi I'm John Holloway with Holloway travel Outfitters and packing light calm thanks for coming to us we're gonna show you today how to pack in a carry-on for months at a time 60 days in nothing but a 22 inch carry-on it weighs six point five pounds at the end of our demonstration we'll show you how much it's gonna weigh when we pack in G show them we have sixteen garments we're gonna pack into this little carry-on okay so pay attention it goes fast keep in mind that second piece that second carry-on that you're allowed on the majority of airlines it's carrying your makeup toiletries rain gear medications all the other basics of life are in your carry-on tote the 22 inch we like to fit in all of them at the clothes the underwear the socks the nylons and so on are gonna go into our hanging organizer by baggalini first we start with our two pairs of shoes we limit you to two pairs in the suitcase one on our feet and gals you can usually find a little piece a little place for your sandals so if we have two pairs we cover them with our nice shoe covers we got two pairs of shoes but the flats up against the side of the the four sides of the suitcase we put in our baggalini organizers I mentioned before this is our great tool for hanging the underwear the socks the nylons if you have to have a tie guys in here scarves and so on I'll go in this organizer with the clear panels it's a roaming dresser on the road on the back side your dirty clothes go back here so it's sort of your laundry basket it rolls up and lies flat in the bottom of the suitcase we're adding about 12 to 14 ounces with this organizer it's a very worthy investment we've pulls the air out and so it fits in between the shoes and fills that cavern if you decide you're like our method remember a couple key things we're gonna have our order of things of being pants shorts for women the skirts and the dresses next and then our tops for guys we keep it simple pants and tops so we start with our pairs of pants first we have to alternate the direction every time you put a garment in zipper and button everything to his fullest so it holds its shape and with the pants that are long and narrow we put the legs together and this happens to be a zip off pair of pants so we're actually kind of packing a pair of shorts and pants in one but the legs together with the waistband up against one into the suitcase and let that hang out alternate the next pant going in the opposite direction with the waistband here laying out the two garments so far we got our Brown and our khaki and it kind of a dark sage color this is going in the opposite direction and at home when you're doing this you'll find that if you've got your wardrobe picked out on a dowel in your closet that it can go just as fast I happen to have my friend G here helping me but you can work for you it as well at home just taking these having the Wardrobe set aside and then putting them in the suitcase we put our pair of jeans next we don't really like to have jeans but we're going to allow one pair because you know you're gonna sneak them in so we got four pairs of jeans laid out like this we have our skirt and our dresses next this is a full length skirt that can zip off and become a short skirt so it's again multiple outfits we're packing with one garment with the skirts and the dresses but the middle of the skirt mil the dress in the middle the bag use the width of the bag now just like with your tops so the next skirt that I'm gonna have passed to me will lay out just like this the skirt did here the dress will lay out full length and if you're neater about it hand comb the wrinkles out then the tops come next the tops go with the collar up against one side the sleeves going where the pant legs are going go back to it alternating the direction of the garment every time you put one in collar up against this side now coming towards me with the tail the shirt sleeves still going where the pant legs are going on the opposite direction so lay these out have them button you won't have to mess with the little tags like we have from our store and I just keep stacking these up let's count what we're gonna have in here we're gonna have four pairs of pants one skirt one dress that's four pants or four bottoms excuse me in one dress tops we're gonna have nine tops packed and then don't forget that the TSA has gotten a lot tougher with their security they want us to go in the airplane with our clothes on so we got another shirt another bottom now up to six bottoms ten tops multiply ten times six you'll have 60 combinations or if you plan perfectly with the coordinating outfits to wear all these garments work together and here's our nice jacket let's show them edgy this is our nice warming layer if you planned perfectly where every top goes with every bottom that's 10 times 6 that's 60 combinations never wearing the same combination twice so that's how we come up with two months worth of travel clothes in one more jump okay now pay attention this is close the complications it gets you take the second garment and fold it up over the top one we are going to bury this nice jacket that perhaps we might want somewhere along the line this is a bundling method it's the most efficient use of space because the clothes are lined flat so you take that second from the top fold it up over the top one now that top garment can fold up over it and basically to keep it simple I'm intertwining the top two garments that we've stacked here okay if you want to get around and not having to peel all this off and that is the number one concern that people do announce to us and we can understand that if you're on the move every day perhaps this bundling method wouldn't be for you you'd have to dig into it so we ask people to do is perhaps do two bundles tomorrow I know I'm gonna be put staying put in a nice destination for a couple of days I lay out a couple shirts a couple pants intertwine them in this bundling method and now I don't have to dig into the suitcase every time I want something as at the end of this I'll pick up our bundle and I'll show you it comes right out of the suitcase you put it on the bed you can hang your garments up if you wish because I don't know who likes to live out of their suitcase that's no fun but you know really we want you to kind of hang them up if possible they'll stay in better shape but it's up to you the main point is that you're not having to dig into the suitcase every time you want something if you plan ahead put a couple of garments at the tops and the bottoms and the top bundle and you won't have to dig every day I'm getting down to where I have the the full-length dress and the skirt pull those up and kind of work my way back down in the bag in the same rabbit in the same order or close to the same order as I stacked them in the first place if you get out of order like I often do that's okay I pulled it up the skirt I folded up the dress and now the pant legs come up and over and we start to form our nice neat bundle it looks like I might not be able to get these clothes but I guarantee you it's worked many many times we've done this demonstration for years it's a bundle method I kind of like to call it the gussy method that was my mother's name she originated this you bring the cinch straps and over and we won't even have to jump on the bag to close it okay there it is it's a soft-sided bag it will close easily remember we started with 6 pounds 5 ounces in this suitcase we've added let me see we've added 15 garments and a couple pairs of shoes we'll weigh our suitcase and we'll see how much we have at the end and there we are 21 pounds so you fold it filled up your carry-on with a lot of clothes we have outfits for two months and now you're ready to pack light and do more thanks for coming to packing light

No matter what you do you are going to empty the whole thing just to get at your socks, shoes, belt and underwear.

Why is this guy dancing around where we're going? Like this is the weirdest trip ever.

He's packing zip off pant shorts, but we're not allowed to bring jeans. But we get one pair anyway just because he doesn't trust us. And then a bunch of Safari shirts? Are we going to Nam?

On the other hand women can bring full dresses to this magical location.

Is it a business convention with a chance of flash floods? He didn't leave room for waders.

Wtf??

Putting aside the concern that you have to unpack and repack everything any time you want to access something from the suitcase, the other (perhaps even greater) problem is that this method only works in the perfectly ideal situation they have provided.

Leather shoes will not work, as the upper cannot collapse flat like the shoes they use in the video. Even a nice pair of sneakers with a bit of form to them will be too stiff.

Nylon zip-off pants? Yeah, I think that's gonna be a hard pass for most people.

Every top matches perfectly with every bottom? Good luck getting that to work in real life.

The better advice is simply to pack like a minimalist. A single pair of jeans goes with just about everything, and can be worn for months on end without worry. Add 1 more pair of pants for some variety (perhaps a lighter color or a pair of slacks if you need a more formal outfit) and you're good to go. Bring 3-5 tops and just rotate them, washing when needed.

Socks and underwear are the same: no need for more than 5 pairs of each. Washing is perfectly easy to do.

The key is simply to realize that nobody really cares if you wear the same outfit more than once. Hell, most won't even notice. If you can get over that concern, your packing will naturally decrease dramatically.

There is still a very true phrase that I like to live by: Travel light. Take what you need, two months worth of clothing is absolutely ridiculous and your suitcase will be a pain in the ass to move around because it will be so heavy and close to bursting. If you can't live without that much stuff when you travel you need to see some kind of therapist because it's not healthy.

Now pack it all back up for the return trip while you're already tired and late.
