this was my gear for the Pacific Crest Trail it started out with about a 6.6 pound base weight and ended up with maybe a seven pound base weight with just a little bit of things that I had added along the way I'm going to talk about the clothing that I used and what worked for me and also I'll mention a lot of other gear that I have here that I think maybe in some cases I could have done better but also ways that maybe you could adapt my kit to your own so this was my hiking shirt on trail this is a Columbia Silver Ridge light I've been wearing these since like 2018. and it is by far my favorite hiking shirt so it breathes extremely well in the heat the fabric is very soft and comfortable I personally I really love having the button up in front so that on a hot day I can open the buttons and really air out now I also like going with the long sleeves because if it's really hot out if it's really exposed I can roll the sleeves down to you know get my arms a little bit more protection if there's a lot of mosquitoes out I can roll the sleeves down to protect my arm from the bugs now as for shorts I use uh these New Balance five inch inseam shorts you know I go with five inch inseam I think it's the perfect size where it's still short it's lightweight it's Airy but uh they feel absolutely incredible these shorts have a liner inside so you know I think that is great for me for preventing chafing and that is all I go with so some great great shorts definitely my favorite that I've ever tried now the socks I used on the PCT um I started the trail in and I ended the trail in darn tops I feel like darn tests are very popular and you can find them in most towns so that was certainly convenient to kind of keep it going what you already been using I personally found that I would get about like 500 to 600 miles out of a pair now I guess also pretty cool about the darn Tufts is they do have a lifetime warranty so if you happen to get a hole in them you can ship that pair of socks to darn Tufts themselves and they will ship you back a brand new pair so at all times I would carry two I would have one that was going to be on my feet and then one that was inside of my pack now something I could have done to increase the life of my socks was I could have worn Gators with my shoes the PCT is very Rocky and dusty and dirty and all that Grime is gonna get inside your shoes and it's going to uh lessen the lifespan of your shoes and your socks so by wearing some dirty girl Gators or just about any Gators out there you're really going to increase the lifespan of your gear so I really recommend that now for sun protection I didn't really use too much and I think this is where I could have done better for sure I just wore this baseball cap I love this baseball cap it's fantastic running hat it doesn't really provide the type of sun protection you're going to want in the desert something else I could have done instead is I could use an umbrella these are two different models I have one with a silver a silver outer layer which I don't know supposedly will keep you a little bit cooler in the Sun and we'll reflect a little bit more sunlight so you know I could have used this in a combination with my baseball cap I would have been happy with my baseball cap and then just had this really cool umbrella to go along with it let's go through some of my uh clothes for warmth so my fleece sweater this is the kuyu Peloton 97. I've used it for quite some time and is proven to be quite durable so I guess what I like about it most is that I can hike in it without totally overheating when it is a little bit chilly out you know this is really best if you are just walking all day you know whereas when I am in Camp I am in my quilt this thing shines most if you're just walking walking walking it is really an active layer and that is what I love most about it if you are the type to take a bunch of breaks throughout the day which most people are if you're the type 2 hang out at campsite and you know be sitting out making food be making breakfast be making dinner this is not going to provide enough warmth you're going to need something more than this now what I would say a lot of people would do is something like this and how you could still use a fleece like this is you could wear it in combination with something else so this is an Enlightened Equipment Torrid it is a synthetic jacket and I really like it I wore it on the Arizona Trail and now that it's coming up on winter here I basically live in this thing every single day so what a lot of people do and what I think would be best is you could either not have a fleece at all and just carry the puffy jacket because this is going to provide you the most warmth if you are sitting still but you can't really hike in this so well or you could carry both since I didn't have a puffy jacket myself what I had to do was continue layering other clothes this is my rain jacket this is an Enlightened Equipment this I use on the Arizona Trail the Tahoe rim trail The Long Trail and now the Pacific Crest Trail it served me well so far even though it's the West Coast even though it's a very dry arid climate it is going to rain at some point and you really don't want to get caught out in something like that so having a rain jacket even in such a dry climate is a very smart idea safety wise and you know beyond just the rain I wore this for warmth the majority of the time many of you saw my video before I started the trail about some new gear I was trying and this is one of them these are wind pants but these just aren't any wooden pants these actually aren't wind pants at all they are made as warm-up pants for dancers so they are just some really thin kind of Airy nylon type fabric they're very lightweight and what they do is they trap heat inside they trap heat inside and maybe block a little bit of the Wind on the outside so when it was cold in the mornings or really cold in the mornings or in the evenings or maybe there was a lot of mosquitoes out I would hike in these these cost about like I want to say 15 on Amazon they're called body wrappers they held up well they don't have any holes they are extremely cheap but uh just a little bit heavier so now if you are a colder person I would recommend tights I think tights are going to keep you warmer they're going to keep you warmer they are a little bit heavier here but I think a lot of people would be happier with them now this is something that I've had with me for every single trip that I've ever taken so this has gone about 14 000 miles this is a fleece beanie from zpax and uh it's gone a long way but uh I always carry a beanie it only weighs like an ounce and you know just keeping my head warm when I'm in uh in my sleeping bag and stuff is very important to me so just the fleece Beanie was perfect now for the Sierra section I added a bug head net oh this is just a one ounce I believe sea to Summit bug head net you just put it over top of your hat you know and your hat kind of keeps it off of your face so that the bugs still can't get you I got pretty lucky and I didn't really have to use this very many times but uh I was definitely happy to have it uh for a few occasions just because especially Oregon for me like there's some truly like nightmarish sections of mosquitoes so a bug head net I added for the Sierra onwards and I carried it all the way to Canada anyway that is uh the clothing that I wore on the Pacific Crest Trail I tried to add in a bunch of different information in here for you on how maybe you would want to change your kit you know I started May 10th so the trail was going to be pretty hot for me to start out I hope this video was valuable if you learned something or if you like the video give me a little thumbs up and if you aren't already please subscribe to this channel I got some great thru hikes coming up in 2023 where I'm gonna try out some new gear and maybe uh push myself in a whole new way so I hope to see you there anyway I'll catch you guys next time
