growth within an existing company personal growth comes really from doing two things all the time pleasing your boss by over delivering on results performance within a values criteria that he said delivering on performance and having the values that go with it so always he can count on you or she can count on you you will deliver the numbers you'll that's one aspect the other thing that makes you really promotable is being smart enough to make your boss smarter all the time so when your boss asked you to do something like get results not only do that but lay out for your boss a bigger picture of the question and lay out make them smarter about what they're doing so that when they go to their boss they've got a wider perspective I'll give you a perfect example I was running a pilot plant a chemical pilot plant I was an engineering process engineer when a new plastic and my boss said oh the boss from New York is coming up we want to show him the pipe she put in place in the new little pilot plant you've got it was no bigger than 10 by 10 a little chemical pilot plant well the boss came up then I gave him the picture in the plastic then I gave him a picture of the plastic we had and how it fit in the plastics industry and where the plastics industry was going now I had only been there a year I was not a genius by any means I had done a lot of research like hell to show that how are plastic fitting the whole scheme of things he was not a chemical engineer he didn't know chemistry he didn't know anything about it he was a electrical person in an electrical company and I gave in my perspective that was probably 60% correct if I'm lucky but it was a picture of what he was investing in where we were in it and how our plastic compared to do ponce Taos Monsanto set cetera and I gave him a picture of their strengths towns du Pont's and Monsanto's so he left there with an impression of me a year later promotions came up my boss didn't do anything for me but this guy in New York remembered that presentation then I ended up getting a big promotion because I made him smarter about something that he never expected that day he was coming up to look at the pipes for this new plastic and the progress report on the plastic what I'm trying to say is your job is delivering results over delivering results both numbers values and perspective your boss wins on all three
