[Music] here is a requested video of how to get rid of hearts on furniture so these are two perfect examples of being very hearty so cute little bench though I don't unfortunately all I like this detail I think it's kind of fun cagey cage core Farmhouse um doesn't always have to be the straight lines but the heart the heart is outdated and then there's wire behind these hearts on the cute little table that matches so today's video is all about having heart yes how do we put our heart into a project only to take our heart out of a project so in today's video we're doing some outdated Furniture flips some smaller pieces that you might find in somebody's yard sale garage sale estate sale wherever you are that you're like a that is so outdated oh I I'm not I'm not going to pick that up so in today's video I'm going to share with you how I'm going to be removing Hearts off of solid wood furniture pieces because these pieces like this are very cheap reasonably priced for one of us who likes to make items over to pick up and flip for a profit so I glad to share and happy to share with you how to remove a heart so if you are new to the channel my name is yvon and I love to go searching for pre-loved items not only to decorate my own home with but to share my inspiration share my ideas of what I would do to these items to get them updated and get them back out into beautiful home decor to be loved [Music] again so one thing about this Pine Furniture it is solid Pine but there 's a lot of knots so not only do you have this to work with but you have the knots and a lot of times when you paint knots they like to bleed through your paint job so and as you see this one's still a little sappy this is like leaking that pine sap so we're also going to share with you how to deal with that so not only do we have this issue but we have some other issues going on and those are not bad issues at all along with all the little nail holes of where this piece was put together that's a simple fix and I have two hearts on this piece to take care of it looks like I need to fix a little bit on a leg I always like to flip my pieces over kind of examine them because I know it's the front that you see but it's the whole piece somebody sees when they're putting it in the car after they purchased it we have the same thing with this piece it's got a lot of knots don't worry about those quite yet now these Hearts have been wired so I'm going to have I need to try to remove the wire and unfortunately it looks like they put the wire on and then they put the front piece on so I'll see I don't know I don't really like to hammer things off especially if it's been glued but it is underneath that piece so it's not that I can just take it off and it might just pull out I might be lucky enough I might try that first before removing a piece because once I remove the piece not only is it attached to the top but it's attached to the legs so we'll try we'll try the easy way first Oh yay we can slide it off that's awesome I was able to remove the wire without having to take that front off it pulled out awesome are you a hoarder like me and I'm like H well I kind of like that piece of metal I might have to keep it because it's got some nice age to it it could fit and something to fill this heart in I need to have some type of backing I need something strong so I'm just going to use some cardboard because tape would give and have Flex not that this won't but it'll just be a little bit stronger so I'm going to fill it in from the front this taped on want to make sure it's nice and tight so now I'll do all the rest of the hearts the same way so every spot is taped off I have it nice and tight pulling the tape tight bench so now we'll need to flip these over and get them so we can work on the other side this side so you don't want that to flex so Bondo is a two-part it's got the wood filler putty and then it has a hardener so as soon as you start mixing it together it starts to harden so I like it because like 10 minutes it's it's dry now it'll be a little bit thicker here so it's going to be a longer sit time because of the layers um but yeah so protective it's a little bit on the smelly side make sure you're doing a well vented lated area I just I use whatever I this is like some paper plate literally a actually a wooden plate um I save them when I get them in like Thrift hauls from auctions because I'm just going to throw them away so so yep so get that hardener in there and start mixing it together I'm probably going to have to mix individual batches since I need so much so I'm going to kind of push it into my sides first because remember this has been routered and it's a little bit on the round side so in my husband's scrap bin I just happened to notice a few pieces of scrap wood so I thought you know what I can fill this up a little bit with some of those pieces just makes a nice filler so yeah if you had s do or anything I I don't have like a lot on hand to fill that up these up so after realizing how much um Bondo that this was going to take I went into his scrap pile and got all those little things that but they're much too big for those hearts so I'm taking the band saw and cutting them down okay I've got everything filled in I'm just waiting for it to cure and get hard it may not look pretty but I did multiple layers with multiple pieces of wood I might still have a little touchup after I sand it but yep now we just need it to get hard so now this is hard time to sand it I've got some 80 grit sandpaper on my orbital sander the longer the sits the harder it gets and it does produce heat as it's so you'll know when it's done when it's no longer [Music] [Music] hot so there is a couple little holes you could see where there's air pockets for the Bondo but it's nice and flat and I need to fill in all the little holes so I'm just going to use some simple spackling it dries fast I don't need anything major and I always like to double check that you know there's not that going to be that lip we're going to go ahead and remove that cardboard piece and the one thing I should have done is like back the cardboard with like some packing tape so it had a shiny side so the cardboard didn't stick so unfortunately the cardboard did stick to the Bondo but really that's not any deal because I have to sand it smooth anyway so the cardboard will just sand off so I did go around and when I was spackling fill in like where all the knots were where a lot of times knots are really dry and they're crack and so they have splits in them so just just to fill those in so you don't see that crack okay we are all sanded need to blow them off now let's see Chris just swept his side of the shop so we'll just blow it over there okay time to get them WI wiped off cleaned G dish hope hot water my normal now I'm going to be doing a few coats of shellac on these pieces even out the procity between the Bondo and the Spackle raw wood stained as you can see like the Spackle changed colors so that means it would be bleed so it's going to take a few coats cu the first coat's just going to soak in [Music] two pieces I'm going to be using old Olive by sweet pickings such a nice fun green neutral springy summery the whole works so sweet picking milk paint is a powder I'm going to be mixing up multiple batches because they're there's a lot of surface to cover so so it's equal parts Powder so I did Four Scoops so I'm going to do and then you mix in water so I need Four Scoops this is just a recycled scoop that came in something I thrifted and it works perfectly to measure and then you stir for two minutes very gingerly getting the yummies off the bottom and incorporating them with the water you can see how it starts to make bubbles and air rates so you stir it for 2 minutes you sit it off to the side you let it thicken up so it's not so watery 2 to 10 minutes [Music] you [Music] think you think I'm invisible [Music] okay three coats of paint we got a little bit of chippiness here and there some weird crackling of course over the areas I don't want I I think you can because I know the heart's there but we're going to distress it we're going to see how the distressing looks before I decide any further yes so the Bondo decided to distress and chip but let's just work with it for what it is right now it's funny different like the sides said okay I'm going to go ahead and Chip some of the other parts just did not little table turned out same thing the Bondo wanted to chip even with the schlack um well now this now look at this side for whatever reason decided like oh I'm G to do some crackling and crazing on you so I'm just going to go ahead and start to sand give it a little distressing and see where we're going to go from there I started off just sanding the edges just distressing the edges and then I decided since it looks like all the hearts did some kind of crazy I'm going to just make it a feature that you're going to kind of notice but you're like it's going to be one of those second glances so I'm going to actually go back in use a stronger sandpaper and I'm going to go ahead and just get a lot more distressing make it look like it has a lot more age just use that heart showing up feature as as part of my design like I meant to do that even though I didn't mean to do that milk paint is unpredictable probably if I would have just used fusions paint you wouldn't have had that crazy and it probably would have been clean but I really like the age of milk paint on these types of furniture I wasn't looking for a clean line by any means so we are just going to work with what it did on its own and it'll be one of those happy little accidents that perfectly and perfect so I think I like the way that it distressed so now I'm going to seal it in we're going to use some fusions in aging wax so it looks really dark but it's not but I want it to get into the crevices and stuff I think I think I'm just going right over the heart to start because it is what it is so I thought I filmed this but I take a little paintbrush and where the seams or the corners you just can't get that rag in there to get that milk paint to be stained that just is that little detail you want to make sure that you get everything waxed and that it's all one flowing color [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so what did you think about today's projects I know that filling in Hearts is out of a lot of people's comfort zone but it is doable I highly suggest Bondo maybe putting some packing tape on the back of that cardboard I like I should have known that it was going to stick but that it's not like it's any big deal we sand paper off all the time so that was the least of my worries and you could have changed paint like I wanted that old timey look um that milk paint gives I thought that the shellac would be enough over the Bondo to like even out the tones but it wasn't so my hearts chipped and crackled um but it's gorgeous you know I we go to a ton of auctions if you watch our journey Channel and furniture like this that's aged and worn and has the imperfections like the crackling of the heart I can't even touch so I thought you know what once I saw that I'm like I'm just going to go ahead and over distress it more than I normally would have but I guess this is what this piece needed to be I absolutely love it your heart the heart is there and unless you really know and you're really studying the piece do you're like hey there's there's outline of a heart and you don't know if it was filled in or did it just age like that over time I thought that was kind of fun so let me know out in the comments Below have I inspired any of the pieces that you have laying around that have hearts in and that you've just painted and you've left the heart or do you have some that you just haven't done because you picked them up cheap enough and just kind of waiting for the inspiration of how to fill in those hearts so the wood helped because these were thicker pieces of wood so the wood help fill in a little bit of that spaces I'm glad that I looked in my husband's burn pile of little bits and pieces you can cut up like paint sticks or anything just something to fill that void so you don't have to use so much Bondo so give me a quick comment Down Below have I inspired you to take away a heart that just sounds so funny so anyway thanks for watching today's video and always if you're part of our YouTube
