that's your homeless is that true no i'm not homeless i'm just houseless not the same thing right the cast and crew of nomadland all celebrating a huge success last night at the 93rd annual academy awards the film picked up three oscars all told including the coveted best picture eli if you were watching us last week he was predicting exactly that a big night for nomad lad and in fact if i do say so you were pretty much right on with your picks i have to say eli thank you heather well you know i mean i think in my uh my favor it's been an endless oscar season so everything is coalesced and we've been seeing this play out for months but i don't think that detracts from what was accomplished by chloe zhao and francis mcdormand and the the the win for nomad land three big the biggest awards right uh best picture best director best actor and such an interesting unusual film for this to be accomplished a movie about a woman who is grieving who lost her husband who lost her home who was essentially houseless as she says lives out of a van is really trying to find a new sense of peace on the road i mean at a time when so many people are struggling and trying to find a sense of community in our own private isolation i mean i think that's how this movie perhaps struck a chord uh and chloe zhao the director of this film makes history as the first person of color to win the directing award as a chinese-american director taking home the oscar and she talked about something that she used to talk with her father uh growing up about these poems about the goodness of people in her acceptance speech so fitting let's take a look i have always found goodness in the people i met everywhere i went in the world so this is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on to the goodness in each other no matter how difficult it is to do that and this is for you you inspire me to keep going thank you thank you and she will keep going she will be back behind the camera there's a very big marvel movie called the eternals which she is directing that we will see next november let's move on to another big winner it's called the father it stars anthony hopkins he is an acting master and an oscar winner now he won for best actor it also won for best adapted screenplay this is about an elderly man struggling with dementia as the world around him changes much to his confusion now it was a bit of an upset last night because a lot of people thought chadwick boseman the late chadwick boseman would win in this category for best actor for his performance in mahrez black bottom but it was anthony who was not there and so joaquin phoenix accepted the award and his honor but through the magic of instagram we do have a message from anthony hopkins let's take a look and i want to pay tribute to chadwick boseman who's taken from us far too early and again thank you all very much that is mr hopkins sir hopkins uh in wales where he stayed accepting his award for best act so in terms of moments which uh what were your favorites as you watched it all eli oh my goodness so one of my favorite films this entire season has been minari an amazing film about this korean american family trying to start a vegetable uh farm uh in the american south and uh the soul of that movie is a korean actress named ya young young and she won last night and it was so charming and so lovely brad pitt was there to read the win she was teasing him in her introduction and her acceptance speech saying how everyone gets her name wrong and also saying brad pitt where were you you know when we were filming where were you um and uh just i just she was just a delight let's take a little more listen to her as she talked about the other women she was nominated with how can i win glenn closer win over glenn close i've been watching her so many performances so we cannot compete each other tonight i'm here it's just i have just a little bit luck i think maybe i'm luckier than you [Laughter] and also maybe it's a american hospitality for the korean actor i'm not sure you gotta love her it's so lovely and the other great thing was so she was teasing brad pitt so pitt made a point of waiting for her um off stage when she was finished and there you see them posing together back stage now another remarkable moment that really hit all quadrants was daniel kaluya winning for his performance in judas and the black messiah this is uh i mean scorching performance as fred hampton the chairman of the black panther party in chicago and his acceptance speech haluya talked about uh you know kind of doing right by hampton's uh example uh in the fight continuing fight against racism but then it took a turn as he started talking about celebrating take a look for yourselves there's so much work to do guys and that's on everyone in this room this ain't no single man job celebrate celebrate life man we're breathing we're walking it's incredible it's incredible like it's incredible my mom met my dad they had sex it's amazing like i'm saying i'm here you know i mean so i'm so happy to be alive so i'm going to celebrate that tonight i don't know if her his mom was happy to be alive at that moment and there she was in the theater in london watching everything live and thinking what what did daniel just say but uh nevertheless amazing performance and an amazing moment for sure so i mean it was clear there was some of the spontaneity and humor that we see at these award shows eli this was a show although it was different and it was reduced in some ways but there was a red carpet there were gatherings of people how did you think the academy handled things overall i i like the show i mean i think the biggest debate i saw online was the lack of clips so there were a lot of movies and short films where you didn't really know what they were talking about if you haven't had the luxury of seeing those films and so some people complaining that was a lot of stars and a lot of talking but i think it really gave the show a certain kind of intimacy that you just had time to focus on the nominees and the winners and hear their stories and hear these lovely little details you see regina king there she started the show with this amazing kind of just long walking shot kind of welcoming us in and there were some really other innovative funny bits such as when harrison ford came out and was reading a card about audience responses to one of his earlier films let's take a look a great use of harrison's grumpy energy up to zora's death the movie is deadly dull this movie gets worse every screening that movie was called blade runner there you go it was actually an introduction for the editing category but very innovative stuff love it eli thank you
