It is indeed very hard to have a objective approach on the Sicilian Mafia and the way it has emerged. Turrisi Colonna was himself believed to be associated with Mafia, as is the case of many other influencial figures of the late 19th century such as Giuseppe Pitre, Raffaele Palizzolo and so on, who wrote and described the Honoured Society. At the same time, the Sicilian Mafia did not emerge from a single cause, nor it was formed only from poor peasants. Mafia bosses in Sicily had a lot of wealth and many of them were even MPs, they had access to the high society and the Sicilian Mafia itself is a secret society based on the Freemasons, both having similar initiation rituals.
There are a number of causes here to be taken into account, and they all appear all across the southern region. The Neapolitan Camorra or the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, they all have these socio-economic problems at their base.
It is a comprehensive subject that I have studied for the past 5 years from a lot of angles, such as social, cultural, economical, political and it really is hard to come to one conclusion and say "this is the exact time" or "this is the exact reason". Another interesting subject is the American couter part, the American Mafia and how it emerged in relation to the Sicilian Mafia and how it basically went on its own road. There is evidence that suggest the fact that the Sicilian Mafia was well organised and had a similar system in the U.S in the late 19th century. But I guess this is a subject for another time. A good video, nontheless.
