[Music] we're in front of a japanese izakaya they're great places to enjoy a few drinks and good food with friends or co-workers you'll find them across japan in large and small towns each with unique characteristics and specialty foods in this video i'll enjoy an evening with my friend in an izakaya i'll talk you through the dialogue and break down some of the phrases and vocabulary as we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] did you see what happened when i walked into the restaurant the chef greeted me he said this happens whenever you enter an izakaya in japan i'm meeting my friend who's coming soon so i said [Music] meaning for two mi at izakayas tables served by the wait staff are saved for groups and some even have private rooms but you could also sit at the counter where the chef would take your order the chef directed me to my place by saying which in this case means something like this way please now let's see what happens next i was given a warm towel called an oshibori as what happened in most japanese restaurants it's customary to use these to clean your hands since people go to izakayas to drink they often order a beverage when they sit down so i said that's tea please the chef acknowledged my order with kashkomarimashta you'll often hear this in restaurants and hotels it's said by staff to let a guest know they understood the request kashko mari masta while waiting for my tea i unrolled the oshibori and wiped my hands the chef brought my tea and said dozo in this case dozo means here you go dozo let's see what's on the menu [Music] us since izakaya food is meant to be snacked on you don't receive everything at once each dish is brought to you as it's prepared i wondered what was good here so i asked [Music] izakayas can have lengthy menus some include colored pictures of the food which makes ordering easy but an izakaya may have its own specialty so it's worth asking the chef responded with tamagoyaki which means that tamagoyaki is popular here tamago means egg and yaki means fried it's like an omelet with a slightly sweet taste that sounded good but i was waiting for my friend so i said tamagoyaki that means ok i'll take tamagoyaki but later the chef replied remember what that means understood but i wanted something to snack on while i waited i thought edamame would be good edamame are tasty japanese style soy beans steamed in salted water so i said toriya or for now i'll take edamame please the chef replied when the chef returned with maya mame he said that's here's the edamame let's look at some take away words we've heard so far welcome [Music] thank you here are two more toriyazu for now later oh my friend has arrived let's see what happens next oh is this read this [Music] i heard the chef call out irashi maset remember that it's what's said whenever someone enters an izakaya when you haven't seen someone for a while it's common to say this or it's been a long time you can save whether it's been a few days weeks or years it's a common way to greet someone you're happy to see again and i'm happy to see my friend so i said oh oh it's been a long time and my friend said back he knew what he wanted so he ordered right away which means beer and yakitori please yakitori are tender grilled chicken skewers that are prepared in various ways and the chef said or understood did you notice that the chef brought an appetizer that appetizer is called otoshi you might think it's complimentary but it's not most izakayas have a seating charge you'll see it on your bill as this it's compulsory so enjoy it and pay up let's see what happens next [Music] my friend and i were catching up and enjoying the otoshi when the chef arrived with our food he placed the yakitori in front of my friend and said or here's the yakitori and my friend thanked him then he placed the tamagoyaki in front of me and said or here's the tamagoyaki i said that looks delicious after my friend took a bite of his yakitori i asked him how's the yakitori yakitori he was definitely enjoying it and said means it's delicious and kokono yakitori means the yakitori here is popular it looks so good i ordered some for myself with a beer yakitori yakitori and beer please let's look at some takeaway phrases we've heard so far and beer please [Music] [Music] so that was a basic introduction to an izakaya i ordered a beer and a few dishes but actually izakaya menus can be quite extensive there's a lot of tempting food on an izakaya menu it's called kuroke are japanese croquettes made with mashed potatoes and ground beef then deep fried koroke it's called agirashidofu a lightly fried tofu served in a thin broth that's why this is a grilled fillet of mackerel while izakayas are known for fried foods you can often get sashimi or raw fish let's order some too sashimi okay since izakayas are primarily a gathering place to drink the beverage menu will include beer sake and shochu a traditional japanese hard liquor let's try it not drinking alcohol there's a full list of non-alcoholic beverages such as tea juice and soft drinks koraokai thanks for joining we visited a japanese izakaya and learned how to order food and drinks like a local to learn more useful phrases and gain more cultural insights check out our other videos [Music]
