hello and welcome to only connect the unashamedly intelligent quiz show the Radio Times describes us as a game of patience and lateral thinking but then they describe treasure as a debate so let's see who will be clawing at each other and sobbing in this episode on my right the neuro scientists Joseph Raimondo a South african-born road Scholar studying for a PhD in neuroscience make Richards a native Canadian with a degree in artificial intelligence also undertaking a PhD in neuroscience and their captain Jonathan Webb hailing from Australia now pursuing a doctorate in oh yes it's neuroscience Jonathan you didn't think to bring up Brit along with you for a quiz well we gave it some thought but only after we'd selected the team and worked out we were all foreigners so yeah there is a slight shortage there what do you think the weaker areas might be most things to do with England you know we'll probably have the brain covered but don't quote us on that and yeah there's a bit of a hole in local knowledge possibly well let's hope nothing about the UK comes up this is British BBC quiz your opponents are the rugby fans nigel austin an ex-army officer who now works as a Sales Director for a software company seen Nicholson a project manager in the aerospace industry and their captain Jim Nugent also a project manager with a degree in engineering if you don't mind my saying you will look very sort of under Bruce or beautiful perfect noses neat little ease have you actually been playing rugby I think the word you're looking for is attractive well no because I didn't like to just say it straight out but you promised you really play we really play it's just that we are that good that you've got to catch us first and then obviously do some damage okay well let's see how bruised and battered you'll get metaphorically during the quiz in round one I'm simply going to ask the teams to tell me what connects for clues although they don't necessarily need to see all four clues if they can tell me the answer after just one clue they will get five points after two clues three points after three clues two points and one point if they've seen all four the rugby fans won the toss but they've passed over the first question to the neuroscientists so please look at the board and a Greek letter Peter please okay your first clue is coming up time starts now the second clue guys quotation please something even put a glance you put on top no ever third three please tennis matches just cause umpires yeah no slang that goes in between things yeah and no rounds ah lame pears pears pears a quotation mark in the open it pairs screams we have to have me a queer dead for three please ten seconds yellow mine's broken three seconds looking coming ah pears how do you mean exactly you've pears and tennis and your pairs of yellow lines to segregate on the highway and a pair of clear put here of cream and cream perfect that's perfect I'm afraid I'm going to have to offer a bonus opportunity yeah then the rugby fans you'll never go well anything we can think of is connection with sets no you were close Nero scientists but the answer is they can all come in single or double variety no double cream quotation marks single table with matches and of course yellow lines to no points there rugby fans pick a letter we'll go for alpha please alpha first clue coming up time starts now Wilkins was in the beginnings so it's difficult Dickens go next please Peter Wimsey is it thank you virtual detective okay so we're gonna take on next please painting this sides an arch is an eviction enemy so we go sir we have Fuhrman fictional I think they'll Peter Wimsey was not on anyway I thought he was a goodie ten seconds room good chef Jun let's get the next one next please three seconds um stars oh yes um well the particular penguin I know is a really nice star on his chest and Sir Patrick Moore looks at the stars at night not I'm afraid the correct answer so let me throw it over the neuroscientists do they all have umbrellas in your mind the penguin carries an umbrella yeah the penguin Batman but definitely carries an umbrella no they all famously wear monocles they wear one of the holes no points there neuroscientists please pick a letter Delta please Delta first one coming up time starts now you sing yeah yep next click please success mated that there exists a mathematical symbols yes there exists is that e you make an e for the symbol but right if I offer it symbolized by an e no estimate it is a little squiggle yeah actually get referred one yeah there were lot of symbols we have a third kid please schwa please symbolize by being upside down me yes they're all symbolized by different formations of the letter e finally some point two of them after three kids well done euro would have been the fourth blue so you knew what a schwa was yes what is it it's the essentially a sort of what we think it was a blank vowel it doesn't have it's not an app or it's an A and it symbolized by an upside-down lowercase e exactly like in the words about exactly very well done two points to rugby fans will try Zita please okay um it's going to be an audio question so you'll be shouting next when you want to hear the next clue scouting now so we don't know what is next please next please yeah locked in the pod ten seconds next please three seconds lettuce they are all to do with letters in what way I don't know Nigel tell it like so three I think was REM so I'm guessing but one two and four might have something similar letter wise good guess but I'm afraid they don't so a possible bonus for the neuroscientists they don't have something to do with the moon talk me through that we know that the REM song is man on the moon and we don't have any specific ideas about the others but I mentioned in plenty of jazz tunes well your guess is luckier you get the bonus points you heard song to the moon from borax rose Alka moonlight in Vermont was one of those jazz pieces always go what about the moon aren't they not werewolves or his jazz musicians man on the moon and clair de lune WC was the last one bonus point to you and you may now pick your own letter Epsilon please okay this one is going to be the picture question time starts now Oh God yep I can grow it could be referring a Quixote so we have a second clue please a template I love a lip balm okay I always represented like okay okay okay take it we're gonna go with a que I can see what you would but I'm afraid if I show the next two clues to your opponent's connection will not hold up there's a possible bonus available see ya madam representative of Cambodia I'm not sure with ak-47 comes in with Cambodia vote some note they are all seen on national flags Angkor Wat on the five cambodia first one the ak-47 is a reassuring welcoming sight on the flag of mozambique so no points there but rugby fans you will get to the gamma question and your first clue is coming up now see okay next is in the number of competitions or some variety the belt next number governmental support equestrian certain donated their post number wins of some things here but wings are up there I do cycling no Cricket Australia make you sloppy mustaches 87 times I guess ok give me 10 seconds and insights on dementia sir next crickets 3 sec that's fear of 30 um it's their unlucky numbers just in the nick of time well done all of those groups fear those particular numbers so a point to you that means at the end of round one the rugby fans thank goodness have got one point but the neuroscientists are ahead with three points in round two there are still four clues this time I won't ask the contestants what comes forth in the sequence if they can tell me that after seeing just the first clue they'll get more points of course than if they need to see two or three clues but they will not see all four because that is the question neuroscientists pick a letter gamma please okay you're about to see the first in a sequence what comes forth your time starts now Central Park South Park Central Park but it needs to be secant remember Park life did we have a second clue please reverse cars the gears on a car I'm not about a car neutral right is the next and how I don't drive a better car reverse neutral Drive yeah I reverse has to be the other like a step away from Drive so that's probably it that's I'm taking out exactly yeah so good drive you know drive very good after just to clears you get three points as I heard you saying there are the gears on an automatic car neutral would come next then drive you drive a manual yes I love an automatic car if you can only look in its own mirror as well it always get from A to B without rushing very good neuroscientists rugby fans please pick a letter epsilon okay first one coming up time starts now next they in the library the classifications of books it's Liam what they called let me try it's the index yeah indexation we go for more general join or escalation well we're gonna get forth one to nothing okay next let's do my library mixes yeah I'm looking for that yeah oh yes this was exactly we're things to do with the library indexation and we're going to go with science give it one more go everything's so intelligent physics I'm afraid not so there is a possible bonus of the neuroscientists can we say three science you think I wouldn't let them have but they said science you think I'd go down all right it's not science yes science who is looking for something more specific is the do a classification system used in libraries but number three would be specifically social sciences and that is an important distinction because of course it's all about separating the different types of book neuro scientists careful please alpha now this is going to be a picture question so what would you expect to see represented in the fourth picture time starts now think about the 90s radio yep let's create a another clip please Michael I didn't know genetics paramagnetic so how do you give all your we use microwaves I getting keep direction it ago yeah is it x-rays is the talk one no UV alright what's up I don't know it has you think with a long time I get microwave it's visible speak there's a visible spectrum and then is easy even optimum yeah yeah what's gonna be a picture of Oh an ultraviolet light or three seconds ultraviolet nope I'm going to show the third picture to your opponents the rugby fans eventually yeah we'll try x-ray machine I think I'm working on the right lines there bands of the electromagnetic spectrum in order of increasing frequency but after infrared simply visible light that's all it would be there's no more visible light so no point there rugby fans pick a letter Delta please first clue coming up time starts now miss Scarlett could be particularly sir next please cutter since then means nothing to me where that's an American mom generals so in the order you know in general you had a lot to do books don't land it ok next please it Sonny Liston don't look so shocked sir your honor this deserves have constant can second cousin rocks everywhere you're exceptions glass okay we'll try clay I think asius clay what what reason we think they're boxes so it's possibly world heavyweight of boxes you are absolutely correct world heavyweight champions from 1959 zone forwards and when you're asked to a boxer is in a quiz always so admire dolly or case you say it's bound to be one of them so well done two points to you neuroscientists Zito please okay first one coming up time starts now okay say then every school members gonna be sleeping second clue please I really need to yeah those hurt isn't there a Radian reef in size going up right but I reach the biggest in the world the waist of the coral Nicole might be something else behind us on the elk one's gotta be a sequester third clue please please sitting for sleepless nights having bigger yes and they're getting bigger right ten seconds receiving Mediterranean Sea yo-chan well I said it's hardening ministry this you three seconds mediterranean for what reason they are sees increasing in size right answer wrong reasoning they are sees decreasing in size it's actually the biggest mediterranean world before put in letter you get the point anyway well Donna rugby fan that leaves the beater question for you the first clue is coming up time starts now three times for trouble okay next successful solids that flies at six I can tell this was where suicides on so yes I decided would be logical I decided so some sites Pentagon fine I did hello ma'am I said hexagon classical source I don't know I think we know what a series is so we get more points if we throw ten letters every ten ten of them hey David Nike just like okay continues only along joins the researchers yeah good where to go ten hexagon I'm afraid that is not the answer you're a scientist I'm going to show you the third clue what do you think is forth here triangles okay if you've got iCarly great something was gonna be okay sorry um it's gonna be no tax anonymous I beg your pardon 12 Pentagon's you sure nope 12 Pentagon's they are the shapes required to make the first four platonic solids or 3d solids but audibly 12 Pentagon's so what sort of shapes are we making at the end around to the rugby fans have got three points the neuroscientists are still in the lead with eight points round three the connecting wall there are 16 clues this time which need to be sorted into four connected groups of four rugby fans can be your turn to go first this time now you'll see a lot of clues some of which could go into more than one category but there is only one perfect connected solution so you have the choice of war alpha or beta type alpha okay you're 16 clues are coming up you've got two and a half minutes to sort them starting now okay bat q Club I can elect ensuite trial Oh clubs go my mullet Club Q the stick so again gone then try the stick club but but yep and a mallet okay it's more themes oh so you go I took anything with jug smile Isis is a river we're closer than a tit let's try not it correct give me prefix size as Club stink they alter digging powder exactly that's the thing okay so witness doing the hauling Polar's doing the horse so instances running club growing crew Isis running I systems a rowing club at Jacob's name you're about halfway through the time yeah turns out things all have shells yeah so it's good well Cisco shell uh don't cancel a minute left okay good things do with them jaqen small and long phrases sweet six mile croquet with them so we with croquette so you've got a mallet might play play sets in a good thing so it wouldn't be a clip and kick the accusingly up okay that's just let's hit the Aqua ponic balance in 30 seconds to creep do with rowing so you get Club Isis crew and turn turtle okay couple different about things to want Philip to give some business tik-tok a them okay choke stick that's a little spy whip salute okay interesting I don't think that's the one things like I think Batman so for all your under 10 seconds now and your time is up I'm afraid it's frozen no groups nevermind it happens there are still plenty of points available for the connections so let's resolve the wall and see if you can tell me what the connection is between the clues in that first group map look Matt set Isis they are Egyptian deities as well now right second group this is a tricky one whip smile joke bottle you crack a smile you crap book croco whipped you crack a joke cracker bottom yes the things you crack you got it things you can crack there's a point turtle polo roll through holdin hands clear the necks of jumpers and that last group that you dullest around so much stick club mallet cube would you use in sport yeah that is their implements you use in ball sports you've just you couldn't quite get the exact for but you have got three points for the connections you spotted well done let's see how the neuroscientists do with their trip to the connecting wall 16 fresh clues of course but the exact same principle it must be sorted into four unique groups of four you guys are going to be getting the beta wall you've got two and a half minutes to solve it starting now okay okay I'm gonna take a wine so suffocation as well exactly ballroom dancing nice man's ball measuring is a cylinder leader croco is baby kangaroo yeah it's a type of kangaroos I think man are these games cuz you try some games yeah sure do some games so hangman holla puzzle puzzle and I'm game yeah try that OOP no okay um Joey's a baby a baby see we owe this is no neither can i okay okay so one make them into handbag amphibious tiger okay so just coming seems it's hard to just come and change right you've got a um lady stood um okay a concert link chain link yeah cuff link that link us really message lightning and wait waiting here nice work um okay well then I'll pick you telling uh measuring tape you've got a minute left crocodiles skin and Abdel clips uh baby can was at a concert hall you know not Paula Jones character friends yeah okay what venues boram's consensus palace yeah hangmen wears a hood even got the games do we still think there were games yeah no there really isn't a concert or devi 30 seconds okay only um ah yeah policeman's ball yeah exactly just try it go for Impala and concept with program country there's any names ago I mean show Chilean toad you keep going Australia nozzle board puzzle piece parlor took 10 seconds now 9 raw right you've got one point for the group you identified and I'll give you a bonus if you can tell me the connection sausages chain cuff webpages don't have links connected by links exactly how neat there are still bonus points for the connections between the groups you didn't spot so let's resolve the wall there's the second group Joey policeman hangman crocodile OQ Crocodile Dundee I don't know I'm Australian now I don't know whether it really sunny climes that you guys all come from they had Punch and Judy shows no sir one is Crocodile Dundee but no battering the missus with a string of sausages that is a set of Punch and Judy characters next puzzle claret measuring Toby piece under ah measuring P sick stick puzzle stick matrix P 500 jugs types of jug jug is like a funny you have to figure out a drink from it apparent measuring Toby they're all jugs last group baby concert Boram caller ah dancing things all types of dance baby dancing one of my favorites is it unfortunately in this case they are sizes of grand piano oh is what they are grand piano sizes so you have got simply the point for the group you found and the point for the connection you found of making a total of two points let's see how that leaves the overall scores the rugby fans have got six points the neuroscientists are leading ten points there are lots of points available in the final missing vowels round this is where we take well known names or phrases like only connect slip out the vowels and then switch to the consonants together teams I want you to tell me what those names or phrases are if you get it right you will get a point if you get it wrong by so much as a single letter you will lose a point and I'll throw it to the other team so it will all be decided here this time I'll tell you the connections up front fingers on buzzers the first group are all political films fans clove artists yes one point scientists the greatest story ever told one point do you scientists marabous one point scientists impressionist acrost one point next category shipwrecked characters scientists Don one by Byron correct on June don't know this one and Tonio from The Tempest next clue scientists was found rods one point this is the famous one it's Lemuel Gulliver next category headings on a profit and loss account scientists turnover one point not so hot on the finances operating profit next clue scientists allowable expenses yes it is one point that is the end of the quiz looking at the final scores the rugby fans have got seven points but the winners with 17 points it's the neuro scientists so we will see you again in the quarterfinals I'm afraid it's goodbye to you rugby fans thank you for joining us and I must apologize to Welsh speaking viewers for an obscenity that unfortunately appeared during that missing vowels round s kiss adavi goodbye the brand new documentary Murder on the lake is here on BBC four in just a few moments this evening and then we're staying in Africa as an expat enclave is rocked by a crime of passion a who's who of British cinema in white mischief at half-past ten Oh
