guest here is Vincent chansard you thank you for having me thank you very n it's the the honors is all ours man when you think of the big three what do you think of what's the thought process around it uh to me it's like uh kind of like recalling the time when you know I was just a wheel right uh in in middle and in Middle School kind of like when I was like 12 13 with my friends and we we would go you know forward scaling between like you know Bach Naruto and and one piece nice and be like come on my guy you cannot say that like Naruto is stronger than this character yeah yeah yeah in the one piece world and in our own world everyone has dreams and for some of those dreams influence matters I mean what would big news Morgans have to do all day if no one checked into his newspapers and is that you had Naruto one piece and bleach going on at the same time out of the big three which is your favorite I mean come a shock but it's it's One Piece One Piece um has it always been one piece or like over time it's it's been that or like that's it's always been one piece interest interestingly enough like my group of friend like my my I had like two best friend at that time and one of them was like a big Naruto guy the other one was like a Bach guy and I was a one piece guy basically always nice nice B of course there were moments where you know like there are some part of the story where you know Bach was very hype and maybe one piece at that moment was just a tiny bit up and of course you time to time you know you're like oh what's happening right now is is very cool and stuff like that I was you know always a one piece Kid N I get that I think for me uh because Naruto was the first one I watched it was Naruto then I kind of started watching bleach I believe on Adult Swim um and then after I got introduced to one piece cuz I was like okay I need something else something long to watch and it's like oh this one piece thing you know and then after getting into one piece it kind of just Bloom from there but on one piece are you do you read the Manga I I mean again might come as a shocker but I don't watch the anime actually I just read the Manga and I a very early stage of it oh wow when when exactly did you catch up with the you remember the arc it was on I actually do remember uh the first time like I called up to the the manga it was like any's Lobby was coming out kind of like uh I was low key following week to week when you know they were fighting cyer pole nine yeah yeah um of course I wasn't at that time you know I was I was a kid my parents were like oh you can go on like on computer and stuff so no internet you know when I when I could go on internet be like kind of around that yeah that's ear wow that's that is lovely that's early so do you remember following along the manga during Marine Fort and just being shocked that the direction the manga was taking like Ace's death Whitebeard so on and so forth I I do remember it fairly well because you know as I'm sure you know know it's a spoilers that you know no one can avoid that you know a died but like at that time we were really fighting with my friends like he going to die now there is no way OD OD that doesn't kill people he's and then like you know what happened happened yeah I the crazy part I wasn't spoiled on Ace's death because I got caught up at Marine right so I wasn't spoiled um when I got caught up his right the time skip was just about to happen um so I wasn't spoiled and I like you I didn't think Ace was going to die I was like come on they they they freed him he's out everything is great right and then you know the next chapter comes out and it's called the death of portus Da literally I didn't believe it I didn't believe it because it was okay for me at that time I wasn't as deep into the power scaling side so I was like he's a loia he could just you know he could just transform again but then after was like he's not you know attaching back to get I'm like what's going on why did it happen and he talked about oh the ainu and the lava and it was like okay this is this is intense you know and it didn't really hit me until we got to after like like the ASL flashback and GARP visits um the Don and machino and then uh she starts beating on him and you know he said no think about Luffy and he's the one that's hurting the most and that was like oh man yeah one technique I love that the storytelling through impact frame like you did it for kaido Yamato every character and it's I just want to know when did you pick up that technique I I mean it's it's a very good question honestly I'm still trying to to improve it you know what I mean I I of course I sometime tend to do like you know I have a code style even though I don't like that that term some stuff come back but I don't really like repeating myself too much does that make sense but like so like impact frame is that thing that you know is basically a commod in anime you see it pretty much everywhere and it's not you know that important but it's like it's very easy to just put in back frame because you want to put in back frame and at some point I just was like how can we use this tool to say something about the character about what they're feeling or what's happening about like whole situation and I just you know question that like tool that everyone use maybe sometime too much and I'm for sure absolutely part of I include myself in that but I I'm just trying to find ways to use this anime commod entertaining and narrative way does that make sense yeah and we we can tell obviously because when when you see the fans reaction to those moments like they pause your impact frames and like wow just look at the story it's telling like in the king versus Zoro fight we see like young Albert we see him growing up we see the dragon form that was everywhere everybody loved that by the way just in the impact frame that was amazing so usually like when people talk about for example like their favorite sort of techniques I think this storytelling through impact frame is becoming the big thing everybody wants to see you know I mean that's surely that's absolutely wonder I mean I think it's it's more like I don't think there is anything wrong with just you know impact frame at the end of the they are just an effect it's not you know that big but it's I just feel like not it like it could be a missed opportunity that makes sense yeah because it's like the space is there so let's utilize it you know so that's yeah that's that's really great to do also it also gives the fan uh Easter eggs to look at the episode like you see a lot of fans they pause it and they're like I saw what you did there um something you mentioned that was really interesting Vincent um you talked about how a character like kaido resonated with or you bonded with him because you spent a lot of time animating him and so um getting into your mind a little bit when you're about to begin the animation of a character like for instance in one piece you're animating you read the Manga um and you have you understand the source material what additional preparation are you doing to kind of animate this character and understand this character as best as possible are you going back and watching old kaido scenes or watch reading rereading old moments with kaido like rereading 795 about like him falling and his death like how how like what's the preparation like because it's like it seems like it's really in depth because of how much you how much time you're spending with this this character yeah I I mean I think you have like a pretty good like understanding of it I mean it's quot and quote a bit like you know when you ing a character if that Mak sense like um the the way I was told animation basically was very Western oriented if if you know what I mean like it's very you know disne Pixar stuff and uh in like Western production basically one animator does one character and one character only so you spend a lot of time thinking about them about what they do and I you know it was just put in my mind forcibly by my te so it's very easy in like especially in Japanese produ just you know start like right like okay I have my My Story Board I have my a I have my director notes I'm I'm gonna start but I try as when I have time to you know just spend time just thinking thinking say about like the character who are they or would they move why would they move like that what they thinking in that specific moment so of course rereading chapters uh sometime watching anime like for example uh unlike the Blackbeard stuff for example I really wanted to see how like they they did uh Whitebeard you know Tremor thingy I wanted to see how they portray it so that like Blackbeard's attack wouldn't look too weak in comparison if that makes sense yeah CU like in Marin for you know like Whitebeard is like literally like he moving yeah and I I didn't want you know black Bird's attack to look like uh you know basically just like you know just a strong wind you want it to have impact yeah when that came out one of the major things that people were talking about was like the hockey right and the red lightning and I I saw one of your responses to it was like uh I don't know this wasn't cuz a lot of people thought myself was like okay is this Blackbeard using conquer hockey in that moment and and for things like I'm sure you see a lot of questions except Etc like that what is what are your thoughts on on on that moment on this specific moment but like I I I don't have like much question about like this specific moment in the sense that like uh each time like let's talk about you know about conqueror yes like each time I've you know participated in an episode and the director was like this this as it was absolutely it was noted on the storyboard it was writen very clearly director tell me okay this also cool do you remember those moment sorry I'm sorry I I mean to cut you off I was saying um do you remember those moments that they specifically said that for example like the first time it was like very clear was on uh 1028 I think it was koamas San's episode it was like okay Luffy and kaido are using our at that moment okay yeah yeah especially since you did a lot of those rooftop fights I I imagine the director's notes would always tell hockey okay and sorry no I'm listening now go ahead yeah so like uh to me when I you know like I was like reading that comment on like I was like you know I'm gonna answer I try to keep my you know just answer one message on Twitter but you know that you know all the space limit on can you know write too much so I had to compress everything I wanted more but like I don't want to spend time answering on Twitter so you had compact it but like I saw that people after that were like but what about like the shanks you know for and I was like you know because I don't watch the anime I was like what do they mean the shuh and like and I watched you know at the time when like this episode came out I was you know French stuff I was I I wasn't really communicating one time so like I watch like that part and I was like okay I get I okay I see I see I see you see the confusion a little bit I I do I do but I think uh in terms of the Conqueror hockey thing even in the manga when you see Blackbeard attacking you see the lightning and even though it doesn't get explained I think fans should just take it how it is until it does get confirmed because we know how one piece goes when there is conqueror's hack eventually OD will say this is conqueror's hack yeah right absolutely OD usually have like random character side character go like whoa they're using conquerors and like he makes it very clear if that makes sense I think for um for a lot of fan because of like certain anime original moments um they try to use those moments to fill in some of the gaps in their understanding and I think you know for a lot of times they use those moments as like hey this is definitively what's happening and I'm going to use this moment especially for power scaling so I think that's what happens a lot of times where they they come to the anime it's like hey look at this black brides in conquer hockey laws using conquerors hockey even though it's not explicitly stated you know um but I know for you guys um as animators you get probably the questions where it's like they ask you to confirm things which you obviously can't do that cuz that's you even mentioned with your director it's like hey the director wants this hey it is what it is that's what the director wants yeah like for a specific scene can you walk us through like the process of like with the storyboard um you kind of starting your animation and then also like I guess some revisions like how what's this typical process for specific scene we can use a Blackbeard scene as an example yeah no absolutely so the process in in one piece is fairly similar to most like process in like the Japanese pipeline yes usually uh you know like the sayak who comes to you and and go like oh Vincent do you want to work for like this episode you know like it will be directed by this person this person will attend it will be great you know and you go most of the time you go like yes sir please please very much I would be very pleased to work on it uh then they send you like the E the story ball basically um you usually have a bit of time to you know just review it want specifically that part or another one um and then they give you like a time for a meeting an appointment with the director you then go to that appoint either physically if you're in Japan or just like we're doing right now to Skype or any other means in that meeting uh the director tells you exactly what you want and how we see this and it's also the moment where like you discuss with the director what you might want to do like ishukan for example is someone I've you know worked with before and who very open to you know like me adding stuff changing a bit you know camera motion and stuff like that right so we we usually have like very good discussion so like propose stuff and then come a step that actually doesn't happen in many anime which is called as the or rough it's like with the D Kenji like big rough basically it's a step that comes before the rough layout where you just do basically uh potato animation like really like man animation just to put in all the information of what you want to do so usually when I have change I want to make like for example like there is a cut where I'm like why are they you know standing still can't we use this moment else with it can we add I don't know like maybe a bit of choreography or something to make them look alive that's usually where we do so that like the director has a first view of what we want to do and he can like tells us okay this might be a bit too far or oh this is actually good please by by all mean in those or maybe can you just change like this tiny Det so that's how it happens and then once this get validated uh you start doing what what is called the it again or roughly basically you can see the stage as like the architecture of a cut it's where you put all the information of camera all the information about what character are here what effect what's going to be involved in that cut basically all basically you prepare the cut yes if that Mak sense once it's done you forward to a they then forward your C Saka canu to the directors director of the episode and director of the animation who for the director of the episode first check the intention the intentions of the cut usually this part goes very well then it's forwarded to the sakuga koku who then put your character on model sometimes and uh at the same time your background layout is forwarded to the background background depart start doing the background and then you receive back the corrections of the animation director and episode director Some Cuts are left you know untouched Some Cuts can be eily modified it depends on so many things director episode scenes uh sometime even like the voice acting yeah and then from then onward you do the cleanup of your cut the final line May and then you forward it again and one one week or two later the episode come out wow wow that is an extensive process m one thing I wanted to ask especially because this process is very interesting right the one of the most recent things you worked on besides the Blackbeard cut is the opening which everybody loves right so this has probably got to be like the best one piece opening in years like everybody's talking about it right so when when they come to you of the idea of working on the opening how did you react to that I mean it's more like uh you know working on opening why not it sounds cool I'm I'm done for it but what you know like made me made me go like okay work on it was of course the director isan Nan like I knew I knew she was gonna like do the opening and I knew she was gonna work again with morisan so I was like no question I'm doing this the allar team yeah please please let me can I can I have a cut I but but yeah I I I was in Japan when we start started working on those so I had of like you know having like the meeting directly with them isanan is a very fun person it was it was a very that's that's awesome um I can just you know feel the reverence in regards to you know ishitani and I I just got to Echo it where it's like a lot of the community um a lot of One Piece fans anime fans you know when you see shitani is going to be on an episode or on an opening the expectations are so high you know just because every every single time it's amazing stuff so I guess you know as an animator you you kind of feel the same way yeah with the process how long is like the process for like an episode typically uh it's a hard difficult question to answer in the sense that every episode is different yeah yeah most of the time from the moment I receive the story ball and start working to the moment the episode is really on average I'd say three monish wow kind of again depends like really don't take this as like a a reference value but like most of the time it's around that time more or less so basically three months is the beginning typically like not you know just accurate you know whatever but 3 months around 3 months before the episode airs is when the production of this episode begins yeah when the and it's a word you use that's very important when the production start before that of course you have the pre-production like storyboard and stuff like that yeah but yeah production start on average I I think from what I've seen allegedly yeah Eric when was the moment that clicked in your head where you were like okay animation is cool yeah I mean that was a wonderful episode uh do I have a story as good as that one I guess yeah as you said when I started at first I was like oh I'm I'm gonna be a character designer for Pixar and Disney you know what I mean yeah because like most animations when they start that's what they want because most people start by drawing C you know what I mean so like most of us are like oh I want to be a character designer so I was you know not original just like everyone and I just I just sucked at it I I for two years straight I was like oh I'm going to going to try like that new technique I'm going to use like I don't know color test I'm going to do like you know like Nica Mar and stuff and like it didn't work I I really suck and like um I don't know I ended up like for two years straight failing every single entrance exam to any animation school that I tried to apply to and I went to a school that I was not interested into and in that school I just tried you know I I tested stuff is that how old were you at this time at the time I believe I was when one yeah 20 21 around that time still young absolutely absolutely but I I had seen you know all my friends you know get accepted into like the best like school and I was like what am I doing wrong anyway I go to that school very depressed and you know I meet tons of like dope people who are no friends basically and uh I we had a very good animator very very good animation who was an old Disney veteran to the animator very very good teacher and very good animator and you know I I tried animation kind of roughly at that time and I sucked but I was just a tiny bit better than my class if that makes sense so like this tiny moment of you know again I was I was very bad at the time but I was like oh I feels like I'm a bit better than your average person maybe and I can try that and and It Animation went very well with my personality where I'm someone who is very like almost neotic in the way I work like I'm going over and over again the same character tiny mro movement to make like the character move went very well with oi I work that makes sense your work epic Max animation absolutely all that's always failed being able to focus by yourself lock in um they talk about that with like program I spend the time we yeah yeah absolutely so like I ended up having fun and you know after I was like whoa it's crazy my my depression disappeared I'm I'm having fun doing that thing so maybe let's try pushing it and you know seeing where it it takes me and you know forward and here I am here you are n that's awesome that's awesome
